Thank you so much for the advice!!!!!! My 2018 expedition would do this for years and ford dealer wouldn’t do anything…. Took it to another deaLer and explained it and they changed it (no charge) and now no more problems!!!!! Thank you thank you
@@benkerwood1187 I have an extended warranty - no brainer if u own a ford imho. There is a specific thermostat that replace defective oem - go to ford forum board for specific thermostat to replace it with (believe it starts with RT)
@@blackshirt5530 I purchased a warrenty from endurance but not through ford. It doesn’t cover the thermostat tho. I’m wonder if I can tackle it myself. Wishing I would’ve just kept my Highlander this thing has been a nightmare.
2018 F150 3.5EB @ 100k miles, I replaced my thermostat with a 180 degree aftermarket thermostat and topped off the coolant. Before I replaced the thermostat I would frequently see the numbers show up during heavy acceleration. After the thermostat replacement I have yet to see the numbers appear, even when towing my 8000 lb RV up a steep grade at full throttle.
Mine was in the shop four times and thank God we finally have a resolution they tore apart my radiator and water pump and seeing that there was three fins off the fan inside the water pump missing and the radiator was 40% blocked getting a new radiator and water pump installed this week
Thats exactly what my truck has been doing lately. While unloaded, as soon as i get past 60mph, it stays between 220-245F. I replaced the thermostat with a 186F aftermarket one, but didnt do a coolant flush. Just vacuum filled the coolant and thought i was good. Its still under the dealer warranty so ill let them deal with it. Would you be willing to pm me the technical data from the ford engineer?
@@joequint sure, I'm just having to fight with my dealer down here in TX. I've brought it in to them 4 times already and they said there's nothing wrong with it (they don't want to touch it unless it has a logged DTC for overheating). I beg to differ, and have been trying to prove that it's a faulty issue
My 2015 3.5 F150 was overheating on me. I changed out the CHT and it still overheats, typically when I drive at or above 60mph and if I reduce the speed, it stops overheating. My next thing to do is replace the thermostat. Hopefully that takes care of it. Can someone tell me I'm doing the right thing, if not what do I need to do?
I have a 2019 expedition max. I am having the exact same issues as shown on this video, with or without going up a hill, of course its worse when going up a hill, but as soon as the truck hits 60 mph I'm at 232. if I get to 75mph I hit the 250. with the temp outside being 106. I have replaced thermostat and CHT sensor. Do you think me following your steps would help resolve the issue being that it is a expedition. I can't seem to find much information online about the expeditions just a ton on the f150s. Please help and Thanks in advance
Any updates? I’ve swapped thermostat, CHT SENSOR, water pump. I just hit 260 going 70mph my fans are kicked in strong. I’m not sure where to go with this anymore. Please help
Have the same issue on my 2019 expedition max. Noticed it only after getting to the top of the hill the numbers will appear ontop of temp gauge but if i accelerate the # goes away. Ive unplugged the radiator air shutters and made sure they were open and still have the same issue. Thinking mabe the water pump is going out since when i accelerate the temp goes down
Naw, it’s just the sticky thermostat. That’s the symptom. Save yourself the time and money and just swap that out. It’s not your grandfather’s thermostat, it’s dual action so it behaves super weird.
My 22’ Powerboost went into “Reduced power due to engine temperature” over the weekend towing 8k# at 50-60mph going up and down hills in Pennsylvania. The gauges never went above normal range and even today unloaded the truck was in the same temp range driving unloaded. Temps were 30-46*. As soon as I can I’m getting rid of this engine and going to something much simpler. 😡
I understand . These motors are super complex. But they are very powerful. First things first, are you locking your 10 speed transmission to 6th. That will get your boost down and RPMs up. This motor behaves more like a turbo diesel in that it like RPMs to remove heat from the exhaust and circulate coolant faster. For me, I tow between 3.5 and 4.5k RPMs. Anything less you will melt your catalytic converter, EGR, and headers. Try that first.
@@joequintI’ll try that next time. But it’s going into the shop coming up to get looked at for the overheating warning as well as check engine light now. I wasn’t pushing the truck at all, I don’t care what gear you’re in for what I was doing in the temps I was in- it shouldn’t be an issue IMO.
I have an 18 as well and experienced the 230-235 about a year ago. Dealer replaced the thermostat and all was well until a couple weeks ago. 30 degree weather and slight uphill grade unloaded (Ohio) it got to 232. Getting ready to flush and replace thermostat myself. I just found out about the sticking thermostats……wish they would have updated it when they were in there lol Nice video, thanks.
There supposed to have a revised thermastat for the ecoboost 3.5. Mine only heats up towing and only above 65 mph. Think the shutter vents may have something to do with it they stay closed on the intercooler until hard excelleration.
Where do I start. I was told the turbo coolent fitting were leaking so they were replaced. After it will still leak, then I replaced the cylinder head thermostat and it will still overhear up to 241. No I don't know what to do. The next option is changing the actual thermostat.
Sounds like you have a bigger issue than just what I had going on. Maybe do some diagnostic tests with compression and leak down to see if the motor rings are functioning properly. Additionally pressure check the coolant system and look for leaks. I’d do that after so if you have a blown head gasket you don’t add coolant to your cylinders. Also check oil for coolant. That should give you an idea of what’s going on.
@@joequint already had done the plugs. Made a big difference and the old ones didn’t look bad at all. The air filter i do every 10k these motors are sensitive.
@@Duganoz sounds like you are on your way to running right. For me it’s odd Ford hasn’t done a TSB on this yet but with this video and some posts on f150ecoboost at least the info is out there. You may want to do some of the other items that I put in the description too. Those will get you tip top. I’m about to hit 90k miles and getting ready to do the trans and diffs flush. My rig is starting to clunk into gear more and more lately.
Mine is at the dealership right now too. Been there for 4 days. I don’t know what to think. My truck hit 252 and that’s when I took it back to the dealership for the second time. Ultimately, they have been very good to me so far and gave me a scarce loaner car. I feel pretty lucky. I hope they have a remedy. If they do, I’ll post it here. I changed out my air filter, spark plugs, and radiator cap as a just in case before taking it in. It really seems like it has to do with the new software and equipment. I scoured through diagnostic data and could find no reason why this is occurring. I don’t hear an exhaust leak or intake leak. I don’t have missing coolant. Everything seems ok. My truck motor is the 3.5 High output raptor motor bad well.
Mine is randomly once every couple weeks running between 230-235 I'm worried it's gonna get worse. just towed a 28 foot enclosed car hauler and it never over heated but it definitely did kick the numbers on more then I liked.
@@RJenkins6586 I’m running the stock one and pull a trailer up through mountains of Colorado with zero issues. No need to runs 170. It’s designed to run properly with the stock thermostat and won’t get hot if it’s working right. My machinist and I spoke about how the coolant needs time to circulate through the radiator to cool down sufficiently. That was a problem on a number of BMW bikes.
@@joequint Really glad I read your reply here. My 2016 overheats just trying to get through Turkey Creek Canyon towing my 3500lbs camper (seriously, 3.5klbs versus the 11k this is rated for). I bought a $900 water meth injection system I was going to install and haven't gotten around to it yet. I bought it before you posted this video. Gonna try your fix first. Truck has 100k on it, so it's due for a lot of these. Thanks for the help! Much appreciated.
@@BURNTKNIGHT23 you’ve been overheating for 2 years but just now replacing? Have you had any issues with your A/C? Mine isn’t working when it gets hot and I’m hoping that helps.
This video is not towing just driving on a interstate in KS unloaded. Here is a link a few months later after fixed while towing in the mountains. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DGVk2N0TJ-E.html
