2018 Haval H9 - the biggest surprise yet 

Yes we’ve had out H2 Lux for two years now and we love it! Amazing comfort on a long trip and very impressive specs. Exceptional value for money at current prices.

I really recommend it when we drove it I thought I am king of the road it has a low price it's made in China but we asked car experts about it and they told us that the model is from Swiss or Sweden and inside of the car is from Germany it doesn't need that much fuel its perfect

Johan Slabbert I don’t think the bar is set that high at all. Nothing remotely in the price point in Australia. All the closest options are Ute based builds like the Everest, Pajero sport, Fortuner and pathfinder but everyone of them in 4wd start 9k at a minimum more. Add anything remotely to these features and your AUS$20-35k off. That’s a lot of money to invest to cover fuel costs later on down the road. I wouldn’t rate any of the Ute based cars as tried and tested besides the Fortuner but even that’s based on a freshly overhauled Hilux so you hope it’s reliable but at mid $50k it better be. This thing for size competes with the Pajero and Prado. Reliability will be a concern but it’s a hell of a leap forward. Give this a generation or two and I can see it being a very serious contender if it isn’t already.

Adrian Butler this is a South African review and my comment is in context with that, mate. I have no idea of the Havals market position down under, but here it competes price wise with a top of the range 2.8 diesel Fortuner 4x4 auto, and you can’t argue that the Fortuner will: 1. Essentially do everything the Haval does, albeit in less comfort/luxury 2. Be a lot more reliable, cheaper to maintain and easier to service with Toyotas near 300 dealers countrywide vs Havals handful 3. Use a lot less fuel 4. Be much easier to sell on thanks to the (largely perceived) much better resale values Toyotas enjoy here. Bakkie based SUV’s are big here, the Fortuner is the gold standard but the Everest, MUX and Pajero Sport are very competent alternatives and all will provide a very good ownership experience. No denying the H9 is a good attempt, it’s actually annoying that it’s so brilliant in many ways but let down by that engine. Given that the motor is apparently a VAG clone, if they managed to fit a 3.0 V6 turbo diesel with around 165kW & 550Nm (sounds familiar 😉) this would transform the H9 from an interesting alternative to a formidable contender. I stand by what I said, they won’t sell lots of these here. But to the right buyer, this will make a fantastic used choice in a few years from now.

It's the torque that makes a difference here, hence my suggestion of a diesel engine. 130 kW from a diesel will yield almost twice the torque. [Chad]
