2018 Indian Roadmaster Review

Two wheels is a great way to travel. The history of the motorcycle shows that they began as humble steel steeds and as time went on, the addition of saddlebags. Time continued to march on and now we have luxury touring machines.
The Indian Chief Roadmaster for 2018 features redesigned handlebar controls. It also features a style that is reminiscent of the streamlined cars, trains, and even household appliances of the 1930s-1950s. Polaris did great with the styling to incorporate the modern technology of the touch screen radio/GPS. It reminded me of the old juke boxes, drive in theater, and cars of an era that seems to capture that even the smallest detail is an opportunity for style.

I own a 92 Softail springer and was currently shopping for an new HD gray beard special (Electra Glide) but after the stunt Harley recently pulled I have decided not to take that route and instead seriously consider the Indian roadmaster.. Thanks for the great video well done.

I am glad the review helps! The Roadmaster does have more style and chrome than the run of the mill ElectraGlide. The detachable trunk and heated leather saddle as standard are nice. I liked the 3° more rake in the Chief Vintage frame myself. Send me a pic once you get one of these bikes.

I just traded my 2012 Road Glide Custom in on a 2017 Roadmaster in September. I owned a 2008 Road King prior to the RG. I first rented the Roadmaster in the spring and did about 350 miles on it. I just couldn't stop thinking about it all summer. I have nothing against HD, the Roadmaster just seemed to address my touring style better. I missed my RG for a month or so, it had the 120ST in it, so the lack of raw power took a minute to get used to. I've done some upgrades to the Roadmaster and I'm really happy with it. I get a lot of "thumbs up" from cagers. I really suggest renting a perspective bike before hand if possible to really determine if you could live with it. I also put about 500 miles on a Chieftain Limited this spring. The Indian line seems to take less rider input to me. Happy and safe riding.

+R. Wally Burris Congrats on the new bike! I keep seeing Indian advertisements for the 116 upgrade so that might be something to check out. Thank you for your perspective on these machines.

R. Wally Burris.. I couldn’t agree with you more. I own a sport touring bike and have taken the RM out more than a few times and cannot stop thinking about it. I kept thinking how can a bike this size handle so well and ride so nicely. I’m in love with that bike.

Got mine, traded my '15 RM up to the '18 RM Elite. Wouldn't have anything else. Surprised to find the heat off the right side not nearly as bad as the '15. At age 62, I've found my "forever bike" :)

Now THAT is some serious valve train clatter. H-D sewing machine times 10. Power adjustable windshield would be sublime. Great review!

Great video man, that looks like a monster!!! I'd change the exhaust :)
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+JafnhaarPall Thank you for the compliment. In the review I did on the Chief Vintage a rider ahead of me on Chieftain Dark Horse blips the throttle and it sounded off well enough. I think the manufacturers are leaning towards making the saddle experience easy on the ears but the bystander and folks behind the bike get the concert from the engine...

Great review. I would definitely have fo change the exhaust. Lol but i do like the fact that the fairing is attached to the forks. Im to used to my head light turning with me.

+Cave Troll These bikes are louder when either beside or behind them. I guess the engineers want anyone that buys one to be able to enjoy the radio without having to crank it up.

Seems like Yamaha went after the Goldwing with it's reverse drive and it's styling and Indian is still competing with Harley.

I don't care for the sewing machine sound either of a stock bike. There is a good fix for that though thru many slip on exhaust companies. My favorite is Rinehart exhaust. It sounds MEAN! Klockworks makes a great windshield for this bike as well. Ride safe all!

Nice ride. I rode 2 of these .. older motor 2014 2 up and the newer 2016 1 up. Both times a fun ride. Lol Stoney says it looks like Rosey from the Jetsons (dash) had me dying.

Anthony C. Roberson lol, stony said that and about had me in Stitches.. I not once drew the similarities lol. I realized after I watched this twice. Read your earlier response to my comment which I never saw. RU-vid has gotten a bit better with that sort of notification. I still am shocked how well that big of a big handles... the 14 we were 2up n I went around a bend with some gust and man .. not even a touch down . They give you some lean angle with these.. hehe.. my wife hates when ,y 1300 touches, but I’m used to it..
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 5 лет назад
Touching can be fun! Except the first date I took my wife on back when I was rocking a 1973 CB750 in the mid '90s. The center stand scraped in a left hand sweeper and she thought it was because of her. Took me several times to convince her it was because left the shocks setup for just me.😯

Enjoyed the review! Have been considering the purchase of a Roadmaster. Not quite ready to commit. We ride 2-up majority of the time so with that in mind it would be nice but coming from an FJR, I’m not sure how I would like the difference.
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+MotorcycleDen What you lose in the FJR canyon shredding ability, you gain in amenities on the Roadmaster. Sure you won't be able to lean as far in switchbacks but you will have more room for stuff. Be sure to test both back to back. Maybe rent a Roadmaster for a couple of days.
@motorcycleden
@motorcycleden 6 лет назад
Anthony C. Roberson that’s what I was thinking about doing. With that much money on the line, I figured the cost of renting a Roadmaster for a full day or two would be well worth it.
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+MotorcycleDen Maybe if you have more than one Indian rental location nearby you could leverage the rental price towards the deal if you decide to buy. Maybe you could keep both bikes. One for longer trips and one for short jaunts with curves.
@motorcycleden
@motorcycleden 6 лет назад
Anthony C. Roberson working in the rental price is a good idea. Unfortunately keeping both bikes isn’t an option. Not enough room or money.

My SENA bluetooth headset lasts around 12 hours on intercom mode before needing a charge. Thats plenty for me since I don't ride for 15-20 hours straight.
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+grindsoul Thank you for that info. Is that running as an intercom or just mixed use?
@AlexRides808

I get roughly 10 - 12 hours of use from my Sena bluetooth as well. And that's with me constantly blasting my music, phone calls, intercom, etc.

I rode the Venture and Eluder at AIME in Columbus. I was not impressed in the least and I own a 2002 RSVenture. They felt lazy and sluggish and produced more heat than the Indian Roadmaster that so many complain about. They looked cheap in the way they were finished; definitely not up to Yamaha standards. I also rode the H-d road Glide M88. They took too much of the character out of the Harley. It sounds busy mechanically;like a sewing machine and the ergos were terrible. You had to point your toes IN to find the shifter. They managed to tuck it in too far. If I were to choose, it would be the Indian, but for now, its my $3000 (that's what they'd give me on trade). With 62,000 miles on it it's got a lot of life left in the old girl, plus it runs cooler (and quicker) that all those air cooled V-twins.
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+Gary With 62k you got plenty of miles in that bike to go. Keep it up!

I have ridden all 4 of the touring bikes you suggest and they all have pros and cons. I own a 16 sg and love it but i had to set it up to my liking. The m8 has all kind of issues and the upgraded suspension still needs work IMO. Indian feels under powered compared to the m8 but rides better IMHO. The Star bikes i feel are the better of the 3 manufactures for touring the ride is plush and the engine has power but the maintenance of the valves is required and could be costly. You really cant go wrong with any of them. I guess it comes down to what you need in a touring bike and if you like to turn wrenches
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+Josh Calbert Being a former Roadstar owner, I can say wrenching was easy. Yamaha had a lot of information online. The valve train never gave me any any issues. I think you are referring to the 4 valve heads that Yamaha has had for more than a decade and H-D just went with. I have read the concerns about how Harley did not engineer a way to adjust each valve in the same rocker and if that is going to be an issue as the valve train wears. So are you waiting to see the new Goldwing and try it when it releases?
@HDR20
@HDR20 6 лет назад
I believe the star engines has to have valve adjustment every 15k miles and yes i am waiting to ride the gw
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
At 15 K, that really is not too unreasonable since plugs would be about due and a couple of those are hidden under the tank.
@HDR20
@HDR20 6 лет назад
Less than a season for most of us. I loved the bike but that could be a killer for me. Most bikes now a days require no valve adjustment especially for the coin it requires

These are nice, but they are a bit more expensive than the HD , and the Venture. N I don’t see why .. I also hated how excessive heat from the engine .. fried my leg.
@RRatedCustoms
@RRatedCustoms 6 лет назад
+Dbest1a Vlogs I have to ask what year model had the heat issue you experienced because this one did not feel hot. As far as pricing, as I point out the Eluder GT and Venture Transcontinental have both Indian and H-D beat on what you get. The Roadmaster is more expensive than the Harley Limited until you add Harley's chrome front end, quick detachment kit for the trunk, heated seat, chrome switch housings, upgrade the stereo to stage 1, and still would not have an adjustable windshield... So once all the above is considered - the price really is not an issue.
