I spent a fun few weeks behind the wheel of the luxurious 2018 Lexus GX 460 Luxury (www.lexus.com/.... The luxurious SUV is very capable off-road with full-time 4WD and very comfortable to drive on the street.
To properly test it out, I took the GX on a 1,500 mile luxury road trip up and down California from LA to San Francisco and then to Palm Springs.
I visited three beautiful Fairmont luxury hotels, appropriate destinations for a luxurious SUV. My first night was at the Fairmont San Jose (www.fairmont.c..., then I visited the Claremont Club & Spa, a Fairmont hotel (www.fairmont.c...) in Berkeley and finally the Fairmont Heritage Place Ghirardelli Square (www.fairmont.c...) in the heart of San Francisco.

People who buy this Lexus GX460 are less interested in newest entertainment tech, driving dynamic, etc. Their priorities are reliability, comfort, low maintenance cost, durability, built quality, fit and finish, dependable.

I tend to agree with that and this SUV certainly delivers on all those priorities. Thanks for watching and for your comments.

You missed the sunglasses holder! Where you said this is not a sunglasses holder it’s a mirror on the overhead center console, that is actually a sunglasses holder too. Just had to pull it down a little more and would seen the sunglasses holder.

Thank you very much for watching the video. I like the GX and it was great on the long road trip. I just wish it had better gas mileage. Enjoy your many years of carefree driving!!

Australia loves this Toyota Landcruiser Prado rebadged Lexus GX460. You see it everywhere in Australia.

How are gas prices there? I thought it was a great SUV, just very thirsty for gas. That old school V8 is great for power and towing though. Thank you very much for watching the video.

Great review with a slight correction: the ACC on the GX is only.good for 20mph and above therefore will disengage when your speed drops below that (IOW, it will not allow the car to come to a full stop).

Great review. I would have this over any of the turbo charged variants any day!

Thank you! I didn't love the engine though, terrible gas mileage from a weak V8!! Thanks again for watching and please subscribe to my channel!

Nice review. Have you done any research on the Toyota Landcruiser Prado? It would give you a stronger understanding of engineering decisions made by Lexus, as this is basically the same vehicle, albeit much more refined. Also, crawl assist has much more to do with extreme off-road declines rather than "hill" decline (Landcruiser Prado). I love my GX470. I love Toyota. I will never drive another SUV. But... THE GAS!!! Ugh. I hope they find a way to improve the gas mileage... however, I don't think that swapping out the V-8 for anything with turbos is a good idea. The simplicity of the engine is the reason they will drive for 300,000 miles no problem. Anyway, overall good stuff. I haven't seen a review with the "luxury" edition and was curious about those captains seats in the back. Lastly, how did you like the adaptive cruise control? Smooth? Jerky? Reliable?
@FreddySherman
@FreddySherman 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching and for your great comments. Long life is great, but yes, the mileage was absolutely terrible. Captains seats were very nice and usable. Adaptive cruise control was smooth, but a bit rough on extreme acceleration, like when it's set to 80 and you slow way down to like 50. I will check out the Landcruiser Prado, thanks for the heads-up.

thanks for the great review! in another review I saw on youtube, that person mentioned that the captain seat behind the driver's side can tilt forward but not slide, and only the captain seat on the passenger side can both tilt and slide forward. Apparently you showed here the seat on the driver's side can definitely slide. I was wondering if the other review is for GX in a different region or from a different year, although I remember it's also a 2018 GX in North America.

Thanks for watching. I don't know about the other review or the specs for non US vehicles. I'm glad I did show what those seats will do and hopefully that was helpful for you.

If you put a smaller displacement engine - yes HP is great but it's high-end power. But this truck/SUV can tow 6000 lbs. So you would want a higher displacement engine like the V8. Higher horsepower - you can also increase the wear and tear on the vehicle. Lexus would not last 20 years plus with over 300,000 miles that people are looking forward (dependability and durability). If you want a high power strong engine SUV - I would go for SRT-8 Grand Cherokee Limited. This vehicle is not priced or marked to the niche of the market. If you want a family oriented dependeble quiet vehicle - this is one for you.

Thanks for watching and for your comments. I just think most people don't tow anything, so it's a waste (agreeing with what you said about the power and dependability). Also, this engine had very low torque as well, 329 ft-lb so again, it just seems like it's a waste to have the V8 without much power or torque.

A lot of people really like the drone shots and driving video, so I try to include a bit. Sometimes I will post a second video with just driving and non-review footage. Thanks for watching, are you really a pilot? I am flying on a Pilatus next week.

You think a Lexus V8 should feel sporty. Okay.
@FreddySherman
@FreddySherman 2 года назад
My friend, the V8 sure feels sporty in the LC F SPORT, the LC F and the RC F, right? In the GX, this is a very old-school, crappy, old technology that just eats gas. It has a lot of torque but there are more modern engines which are much more efficient and provide the same amount of power. Read more online, most people share this opinion about the engine. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to my channel. I am reviewing the 2022 GX next month.
@TheBlooRayChannel
@TheBlooRayChannel 2 года назад
@@FreddySherman of course I get that, Sir. The LC F series is a sports car so is the RC F. Correct? It pains me to hear when reviewers complain about an engine 'not being sporty' when that is literally what the engine is desperately trying not to be. Sporty. This is not a sports car. It is a reliable, comfortable family truck that you can have some fun with off road. Yes, based on your mileage you'll end up spending an extra 3-$400 a year on fuel, perhaps a bit more compared to a similarly sized vehicle. But that's where most of your cash goes. No repairs besides the general maintenance. A friend owned a Honda Pilot, great gas mileage but paid so much more in repairs. Switched to a GX and the total number of repairs he's had done to the car in 3 years of ownership is ZERO.
@FreddySherman
@FreddySherman 2 года назад
@@TheBlooRayChannel OK, I agree with you on all that. My point is, a new Lexus SUV should get better mileage as comparable vehicles from other manufacturers do. I believe this or last year was the last year for that engine, Lexus knows it's old (yes reliable) technology. Even they use a twin-turbo V6 in the LS now.
@TheBlooRayChannel
@TheBlooRayChannel 2 года назад
@@FreddySherman can't disagree with that. Lexus/Toyota are known to use one engine for a decade if not more. Take the 3.5l v6 2grfe. From 2007 right through 2018 on the ES and RX. Yes, the engine is old. Is it a lazy approach? Absolutely. Sporty? Nope. Never was the manufacturer's intent. I did enjoy the rest of the video. I like the captains chairs which gives easy access to the 3rd row. But then I lose a seat this way. Decisions
@FreddySherman
@FreddySherman 2 года назад
@@TheBlooRayChannel I liked it a lot, it was just crazy to get under 15 mpg for that long road trip. Good thing that was a few years ago when gas was relatively cheap.
