It's nice to see someone being adult about the topic and not fanboying about sticking with the manual no matter what. That new 10 speed is a work of art. But, like you said, I'm waiting to see how the revised manual holds up under power adders at the tracks before I make my purchase.

How can you have a muscle car without having a manuel? We know the auto is quicker but that's not the point. I am a 58yr old gt manual owner and even my 24yr old son agrees! Manuals are just so much fun and actually take some skill to drive. I have no regrets. Save the Manuals!!

For speed and traffic: Automatic For fun and bragging rights: Manual
@roundsm18

I think it depends on the person. If I have to drive in traffic - no automatic. I want control in traffic. If I'm going to just drive on the freeway - don't care. I drive well over 40,000 miles a year, and most of them are manual vehicles.

@@roundsm18 I have automatic and I agree. Though we have paddle shifters the car still feels like it’s taking control. Looking to trade in for a manual soon, I drove my first one for 30 minutes in a WRX and it was the funnest thing I ever did (though I suck at stop and go LOL)

I never knew how to drive manual and I always wanted to. (I am 46) So, last summer I bought a used Subaru Forester and have been teaching myself. I am no expert by any means, but I am getting better and I can get around. It feels good being able to drive a manual.

I am 42, I learned how to drive 10 years ago, I had never driven a car till the age of 30 when I moved to the States, so I learned driving automatic cars, I have 2 automatic vehicles, one of them is 2018 Toyota Camry SE with both manual and automatic transmission, sometimes when I stop on red lights I shift the transmission to manual and start driving. I am going to buy a used manual car to learn how to drive a manual. For some reason, I believe driving a manual car is more fun.

I just luuuv driving my manual. The best time it shines is when I'm doing donuts and goofing around in snow. The ability to hold any gear and feather the power gives me tons of control. I guess with paddle shifter in sport mode is same thing.

I hear ya! But.. For the redline argument: I think that's the point of that 10 speed: you have full control and for example: you can mash the throttle like you want and if you don't want to redline: just tap the pallets and voilà! (I'm a manual guy btw!!...but this 10 speed...ouch!!!)
@RimshotsandNamaste

@@DickGazInYa haha yes! The dilema is strong! We all are performance amateurs and manuals had always been the way to go! And the feeling of rowing your own gear is unique. But...just test drove a 3.7 mustang manual today (have a 11 impala for 9 month now) and it made me wonder : how in the hell could you exploit the full potential of 460hp with a manual?! And while I was shifting that v6 mustang like an amateur (since I lost a bit the habit) it made me realise: mmm well..maybe using a clutch is not that great after all. In any case: this week, I'll just go directly to a ford dealer and test drive the auto and a manual back to back and hope it'll make my choice clear!

I moved from a 6 speed manual Monaro (Pontiac GTO in the US) to a Jag XKR (auto only) so I feel well qualified to speak on the subject. I'll cut straight to the chase, I miss the manual. Sure, the Jag is the better car in my opinion. It's better built, it's slightly more comfortable, it's drop dead gorgeous, and faster in all respects. And yet, and yet, the big Aussie was far more the most involving car to drive, felt more pure than the XKR and you always knew exactly what the car was doing underneath you. The pedals were perfectly spaced for my size 11 feet, and the pops and crackles from the custom exhaust when you got the rev matching perfect on the downshifts was addictive. My next weekend car will either be a 6MT Mustang GT, or bizarrely, an RCF 😜

@michaelharris748
@michaelharris748 5 лет назад
@@nola504boy1 youre not gonna be slow because you have a 460 horse stang with a manual...yea youll be a little "slower" by comparison but low 12s certainly isnt slow for a stock na car with 5 liters. If youre gonna be drag racing or setting your car up for drag and dont care about twisties or anything else and just wanna go as fast as possible as easy as possible yea 10 speed makes more sense but there are people who actually like to have fun driving their cars. Just because its a few tenths quicker stock vs stock doesnt make it the automatic winner for everyone no pun intended. As bill stated he didnt buy the car to straight drag race he has a car for that he wanted a car to have fun in and be more engaging i can certainly understand where hes coming from. Im going to get a stang in 2 years after i pay my daily off (2016 fiesta st full bolt on hybrid turbo makes over 280 horses to the wheels and weighs 2600 lbs) it is a 6 speed manual and thats my fun daily car that i carve up twisties with. The mustang is going to be my nice day cruiser that i enter into car shows and drag race with im gonna set it up with forgestar f14 drag pack minor weight reduction etc etc...i dont care a thing about twisties in it i have a car for that so the 10 speed makes alot of sense for what i want the car for. But it isnt the automatic choice for everyone for every situation just because its a few tenths quicker and for that same reason it doesnt make the manual "slow". I cannot stand seeing all these comments like that.

Update. They now have 2018 GT 10spd autos in the 7’s!!! Have you tried shifting your manual from 1st to 3rd to 5th to achieve better mileage? #OldSchoolTrick
@JCTiggs1
@JCTiggs1 3 года назад
The 2018+ 10 spd auto has 7 useable gears up to 1:1 while the 2018+ manual only has 4 gears up to 1:1, or 3 less gears to work with. 1st gear in the auto is nutz, is so short that 2nd gear in the auto is equal to 1st in the manual. On top of that Ford made the individual gears on the MT82 quite tall. Doesn't matter how fast you can shift in the MT-82, the gears are too few and spaced too far apart. The only way to make up for it is to add more power. Here's how the individual gear ratios and torque multiplication compare between the two transmissions.. Auto Manual 3.55 PP 3.73 PP 10R80 vs MT82 1st = na 2nd = 1st 3rd = 2nd 4th = na 5th = 3rd 6th = na 7th = 4th (1:1 ratio) 8th = 5th (overdrive gear) 9th = na (overdrive gear) 10th = 6th (overdrive gear) As you can see the auto has the advantage with 3 additional shorter gears to work with up to 1:1 ratio (1st, 4th and 6th) which the manual doesn't have when it comes to a comparable ratio. Obviously that's a huge disadvantage for the MT82. Having said all that the manual is more fun to drive. I still miss it everyday. And the auto in 'manual paddle mode' is often delayed/unresponsive with downshifts or upshifts, and poor rev matching downshifts 4-3 and 3-2 at certain speeds both issues are a huge complaint of mine as I've owned a 10R80 GT for three years now. And on the track the additional gears on the 10R80 lead to more shifting on each lap (and not necessarily faster) which leads to overheating without a proper cooler, often much sooner than the manual. If straight line speed and, unfortunately reduced driver involvement, are the highest priority, the 10R80 is what you want. If you want to feel more connected to the overall driving experience and don't mind being a bit slower get the manual. Just read up on the Getreg MT82 and know what your getting into. I'm really hoping Ford switches to the Tremec for 2022/23 Mustang.

I still can't believe Ford turned the top 2 gears into overdrive on the manual, which means they had to space out the the bottom 4 gears compared to the 2015-2017. As a result the 2018+ 6 spd manual has the same 0-60 as the 2015-2017, with only a slight better 1/4 mile time. C'mon Ford. Get rid of this tyranny and put in the GT350 Tremac with proper ratios for each gear (aside from the usual 6th gear OD).

I love them both. But they have different purposes. And, they are very subjective for others. In short, though, I don't like hearing how only "manual guys" are true drivers or enthusiasts. I don't think race drivers in a great many race series that use paddle shifted transmissions would like to be characterized as not real drivers. Also, on a road course, if you are not involved because you don't have a manual, you ain't doing it right. Taking a car, any car, near the limit makes you involved...though I agree it is harder to keep a car at the limit with a manual trans car. I've had a 2018 GT PP1 Auto on the track and paddle shifting 10 gears keeps you busy too...including all the basic tasks you have on a track managing grip levels.

I just drove the automatic. Sometimes it’s really good. Most of the time it’s ok. But sometimes it’s absolutely awful. If you hold low gears it jerks around the whole time. And if you are to late for shifting with the paddles. The car cuts all power and takes 1-2s to shift up. So no the transmission isn’t as good as Porsche PDK or BMW DCT or the ZF 8 speed. I would only recommend getting the transmission if you want to Cruise or if you want to drag strip. Just get the manual maybe in 10 years when the mustang is hybrid 4 Zylinder you can get the automatic and it will be as good enough. Just get the Manual guys

My manual lost 3rd and 4th and Ford fixed my issues and will be compensating me for my lost time with my car. Cant ask for more than that and the fixed trans has been money. Thoroughly enjoying my M6 a tune and CAI does wonders. Great video

If and when I buy a Mustang it'll be because I like driving the darn thing, so I'd 100% go manual. I daily-drive a Kia Carens from 2009 (Manual shifter, with a janky clutch add that) and even in City traffic I don't mind it that much, and once you hit the open roads .. I can only imagine at the moment but that feeling of going through the gears must be .. something else. A man can dream, maybe that dream one day becomes reality :)

Automatic. It’s quicker off the line, but more importantly, for those of us who have to deal with heavy traffic, it is SO much easier to drive. I’ve owned two manual transmission cars, and they’re horrible to drive a few feet at a time in a bumper to bumper traffic jam.

Hopefully the manual transmission shift fork problems people seem to be having is dealt with and fast. Go ford go mustang. Check out my 2017 gt with mrt h pipe and roush axleback!

Whole point of an automatic is to shift fast. The fastest shifting auto gearbox today won’t be so a few years from now because that number will improve. Eventually the automatic trans u get today will always be obsolete down the line. The manual however, is timeless, and will always retain its value of letting you be more connected your car and the satisfaction of landing that nice shift.

Thanks for the info. Im thinking about getting a 19 automatic with pp1 package. I agree shifting is alot of fun with no traffic around on some twisty backroads, but in traffic stick is a chore. Thanks again for the info on reliability on the trans. I just worry the auto might have some problems because its so new.

MT82 manual is horrendous, just google the transmission problems on them. Get the auto if a GT, if you want a manual car get the tremec in the gt350 or gt350R. If youre talking abt cash, honestly, dont spend outside your means, but a chinese built transmission isnt worth buying just to drive manual. This is coming from someone who owns both a manual and an auto.

... I understand people's affection for manual transmission given how slow and inefficient automatics were for decades, but saying that there's no clear winner now is like saying Paul Bunyan is still able to compete with chainsaws. People can't compete with machines. First, automatics gained an advantage among supercars, where performance was everything. Eventually that efficiency was adopted by every day drivers. Now, no one who cares about the science and the math is trying to make an argument that manuals can still compete. They can't. The manual Tremec TR-3160 is inferior in every way to the automatic Ford 10R80.

I debated on the 6 speed but it was not a Tremec and I was like nah, not for me. Auto has its perks. Quick 10 speed auto (in my former 2018 f-150) and I can drink my coffee and get on it if I want to. It’s easier to drift on tight corners with an auto. Heel toe shifting is for experts lol. Once the auto craps out I will put the Tremec in there.

I quit driving manuals in 2008.The autos now are faster and now that I am in my 40s--it becomes inconvienent in any sort of traffic--which is everywhere now.Best car I ever drove just happened recently.I test drove a jaguar I-pace --electric awd and it is going to be the future.The I-pace is doing a low 4 to 60--and it produces its torque instantly.I used to laugh at electric cars--but if they come down and can gain more range--it might be a consideration.Biggest shock of an electric car is even if you are going say 50--u can punch it and all 500 lbs of torque hit you and the car just GOES.V8 American cars are great--but reliability is what deters me from buying one.

Dude you have a jaguar and speak reliability. They're owned by Indian junk Tata and their predictability is absolute junk. Most fall apart before 10k! Mustang reliability is way above anything German. Of course still a far cry from Honda and Toyota, ford however is still by far the most reliable U.S. car manufacturer.

I am a proud owner of a 2016 Mustang GT manual 3 weeks ago. I’m thinking about adding a Borla catback exhaust system to give it that loud racing mode. Do you suggest I add that to improve it? I have to say.... it’s way more fun driving a stick I enjoy the engagement you are definitely one with the car!
@MickBiker88
@MickBiker88 3 года назад
I own a Charger Hellcat with a Borla Atak exhaust, it sounds nuts. If you want your car to be crazy loud go for it, it sounds good, no drone, but it's very loud (my neighbours hate it, but I do love loud vehicles personally, specially v8). Since you own a manual Mustang, please tell me: I am considering to sell my Hellcat and buy a 2019 Mustang. I know how to drive a stick but never owned any manual car and I live in the city with tons of trafic. So I am concerned that I'm not gonna be happy with the auto, 'cause fuck it, a Mustang looks way funnier to drive with a stick, but I'm also concerned that I'll regret it in trafic, and burn my f***ing clutch. What do you think ? Thanks for reading and sorry if my english isn't perfect, my mother tongue is french.

@@MickBiker88 to answer your question my mom taught me to drive stick 20 years ago I forgot to learn stick then about 2 years ago a friend showed me one day it took to re learn my memory came back took about a week when I bought my first mustang manual 2 years later I had to be careful with it it’s my first new stand so what I did I had self learned using my brothers old 2004 Altima he barely uses (he has 2 other cars) to practice on before I picked up my stang. Learning to drive a clutch is pretty easy once you learn you will improve your driving it’s a great experience I watched a lot of RU-vid videos on how to drive stick how to learn “rev match” it’s worth it! You will learn a lot just driving a stick is one thing it’s best to watch videos they will break it down to you and how not to burn your clutch. After 2 months of driving stick I have mastered it but personally I still have a long way to go in learning to drive stick and every car is different when you are driving stick so practice and practice! It’s not hard I promise. As for having stick in a crowded city I would have one car auto and the other manual to practice. I have two cars I don’t drive stick much in the city it’s annoying to keep shifting gears your car will stall and could burn your clutch. I can drive the city I have no problem I’ve done it many times I just find it annoying going bumper to bumper traffic. I would advise against it unless u have two vehicles. It’s never too late to learn to drive stick I highly recommend it. For me I had to catch up learning for the last 20 years I have always owned automatic I wanted stick. In a Mustang if you talking specs owning a automatic car can accelerate much quicker 0-60 you can feel it as for stick takes time to accelerate unless you mastered it and can gear up going higher speed. To answer your question driving stick is for engagement and being I say “one” with your car you are more engaged in driving than auto i find it’s no fun. If you choose automatic you won’t be as engaged in your stang as you would in a manual. I love to drive stick because I’m better engaged and I’m not focused on going on my phone checking texts. Owning a stick lessens your chance getting into an accident because you are more engaged and focused driving than in an auto.

Good vid Bill. I have the 10 speed in my 18 F150 and I like it. In my Mustangs, its been the manual (for all the reasons you mention) but given the horrible big city traffic and congestion I'm around and the lack of fun driver roads, I'd pick the 10 speed if I were to get a new Mustang.

What exhaust set up do you have in this video in the manual? Sounds perfect. Great tone and sounds like the perfect amount of cabin noise. Enough to be there and let you hear that V8 but not so much that it’s obnoxious or would get annoying.

I’ve always owned a stick shift, yes the 10 speed is fast. But like he said, I’d rather me control the car than the car control me. It’s just so much more fun to drive and bang gears. Unless my left leg falls off I’m sticking manuel! Lol

If you're trying to win at the drag stip, you should be buying the Dodge charger or challenger or the Chevy Camaro in an auto. Those car are similar in price and preform better at the drag strip. If you want something fun to drive, then the manual is a must. Mustangs must be manuals.
