I give an update on the engine’s ticking, fluttering, and knocking sounds. Thanks to Koons Ford of Baltimore for the help!

Thanx for the info. Youre the first one ive seen to talk about this flutter. I was worried about that but now it makes sense. I cant believe they say 87 is ok. I bet its pulling horsepower when its used. I always put at least 91 usually 93 in tank to be safe as i can. Good info. Thanx.

Great info! But I am a little surprised with the 87 octane explanation. While yes it totally makes sense, Ford actually added an additional knock sensor in the 18 cars to prevent this from happening. This tells me that Ford had a very good idea that going from 93 to 87 was going to cause some issues in the gen 3 Coyote, hence the extra knock sensor. Your video should be the poster board for ALL those people thinking their 5oh's are going to blow up!

19 5oh coming!!! Ford had to install extra knock sensor because compression ratio went from 11:0 to 12:0.

Computer pulling timing down to prevent knocking should NOT make noise. If it's making knocking noise then the computer isnt doing its job and you ARE hurting your engine. I accidentally put 87 octane in my GT 500 once and it ran fine. I just stayed out of the throttle until I ran all of it out. No Noise due to the computer pulling timing. It sounds like everyone with 2018 GTs had better run 93 quality fuel. I feel for you guys. Good luck everybody!

I run only Shell 93 Premium fuel in my Shelby. I read on a BMW forum a few years back that Shell Premium 93 tested actually 97 octane in a lab by a chemist BMW owner. Go for Shell 93 Premium guys and see if it helps you out. Get a Shell rewards card and save 10 cents par gallon on every fill up. Good luck guys!

All domestic performance vehicles sold in the US, the dealers use 87. If, and I suggest, you are going to buy one of many different new performance vehicles, that you tell the dealer to fill it up with 91 or 93 before you take delivery and ask for a copy of the receipt.

Great video and explanation. I am right with you on mine....on all points....as soon as you out 93 in, all “knocking” disappears. Interestingly, my 2016 and my 2017 had no knocking with 87...that being said, as soon as I would out 93 in those cars, you felt an immediate increase in throttle response. I can still run 87 and every other fillup I add a can of Seafoam and that eliminates the knocking as well. The difference in cost between 87 and 93 at least here in se Michigan is about $.70/gal. Not terrible or significant enough to not run 97. I don’t only because I don’t own the car...it’s an executive fleet car thru Ford HQ. My wife’s position there gets me a car about every 8-14 months....no payment, no insurance, no maintenance and no mileage restriction. Just gas and drive it like you stole it. I just turned 20k on my 2018 gt Premium Convertible, and Ford out another set of tires on it for me, no charge...line lock and “spirited” driving take its toll. Unfortunately I will have a quick turn in this car, as my winter vehicle was built last week....2019 flex limited awd...I will be able to order another vehicle probably before the end of January and will have it about April....probably another gt Convertible which I prefer over the fastback...

@floridajames04 6 лет назад
Rob Mickovic there are TONS of RU-vid channels dedicated to this topic. Sea foam was designed for outboard motors, it plays little effect into modern direct injected engines. Use B12 Chemtool or Techron if you want proven results in modern cars.
@robmickovic8343
@robmickovic8343 6 лет назад
James S i will look into those recommendations thanks for the info....I added it to 87 on a fill up and the “knock” disappeared. Drove thru a couple of tank fulls without it and the knock came back..added the Seafoam and the knock disappeared so I stuck with what worked for me...but again I will look into the others not for my car as I only keep them a few months, but for all my other toys...

I agree with the ticking is GDI noise. I have the metal slapping noise on my 2.7 eco boost when I hammer it. And found it quits when I use higher octane. Even though manual says 87 is able to be used since switching to 93 I javent heard it. Just my 2 cents from a direct inject ford owner. Good luck.

I also have knocking whenever I put less than 93 octane, especially when going uphill. The knocking is gone since I decided to use 94 octane only...

I have been using 89 octane ethanol free in my Mustang GT. I’ve seen what 15% ethanol gas does to my lawn tools and don’t want that crap in my car. I haven’t heard any engine knocking.

May have already been said, but the car is under warranty. Maintain it like they recommend. If or when the motor fails have the ford dealer pick it up and have ford deal with it. I had an EVO x before my 2018mustang Gt. The evo always made strange noises and ran different all the time. I properly maintained it, which was expensive and most part a nightmares. The Mitsubishi dealers which I hade 3 in my area had no knowledge what so ever about the EVOLUTION compared to their other non turbo cars, which was very frustrating. The GT will make you paranoid because of all the videos on RU-vid. How many have had total engine failure???

The reason for hearing the knock is because the octane level on 87 fuel is to low. These motors are 12/1 compression. They need 93 octane.

Once had a knock sensor go bad (no codes were thrown) and I thought for sure it was a rod knock. It was LOUD! Spent a couple grand on machine work and parts to still be knocking when back in car. I dont remember what the sensor cost but it was cheap. Anyway fuel knocks can sound worse than a rod knock.

This "piston slap" noise heard at idle would not be caused by low octane fuel. Ping or knock is only heard under load or acceleration. So that makes no sense to me.

It splits time between my Ford Ranger as my daily driver. Also, you don't need 93 octane to enjoy driving the curvy mountain roads we have here in Colorado. That's why I bought the car. 9500 miles and I've only had it since February.

It was out of warranty, too old. I could have driven it until it really broke but had Livernois motorsports in Michigan use my block, crank, and heads to build their pro motor. Excessive I guess, but so far so good.

I have the bbq tick and 2k rattle on my 2020 GT and I have 13,500 miles. I plan to just enjoy the car and not worry until my warranty is up. Once it’s done I’ll most likely go sleeved block and stronger internals anyways. Then get some oil pump gears, upgrade the clutch, mid shafts, and go whipple supercharger.

Bullshit.....my car sounds exactly the same and its had 93 octane in it from DAY #1. YOU ARE BEING PACIFIED. Wztch my videos if you dont believe me....ive never even put 89 in my car.

My car was broke in properly, and has not even seen 100mph still to this day. Im calling bullshit. That doesn't mean you need to worry about it, just means it definetely has NOTHING to do with gas
@OffroadNow
@OffroadNow 6 лет назад
I don’t know what to tell you, man. We may just have slightly different issues even if they sound similar on video. I’ve actually been watching your videos over the last few weeks and feel for you. I hope your car runs strong for a loooong time, but my “knock” sound legitimately went away with the octane switch. Maybe it’ll come back and prove not to be octane, but let’s hope not. All I can do at this moment in time is say what the tech observed and wrote down, and what I’ve experienced.
@mustangMike740
@mustangMike740 6 лет назад
Games&Gears i sincerely hope so, but i hear the same noise, it brought me outta my seat, and i have never put cheap gas in my car. I think a lot of the noises are going to be considered normal in the future,,,,,,except that one. I hope hes right for you brother. I saw a 2 1/2 week reprieve where i heard nothing so stick with the routine so you can prove him right. Ill be tuned in !
