Manual is so much fun. I had an auto FRS and that was lots of fun too but I got the 2018 86 premium with the manual.. Its just lends itself more to the driving experience. Love these things!
Great thing about new ones is the softer suspension which makes it better for a daily. That and shorter gear ratio and smoothed out torque dip. A lot of these little touch ups added together significantly improve the entire experience.
I like your POV setup - I see so many people who mount their cameras too high and it doesn't give the sense of 'realism'. But yours, TheTopher's and Tedward do a good job unlike the majority of POV drive videos. I guess you're not allowed to go to full RPMs when testdriving these cars? Which do you think is more 'fun' to drive? The MX5 Club Edition or the 86/BRZ?
smilepermile thanks! Due to break in procedures and respect for future owners, I do not go all out. While I wish I could, I try to maintain respect. My setup is the exact same as tedward and the topher. I am good friends with both of them, and I texted Chris Amos and he recommended this setup. The camera is located right between ny eyes, hence the perfect leveling.
The mx5 is more fun. I was actually dissappointed with the 86. While a fun car to drive, it really is lacking power and a sense of speed. The mx5 club feels faster and handles much better
Thanks for the quick reply man. Totally understand and respect your reasoning about break-in procedures and prospect owners :) Yeah I remember Tedward once showed his binaural audio setup as well and he said he used a Zoom H2 to get a pretty realistic audio. Its really cool that Chris gave you some tips. I've rewatched his mom's MX5 RF videos many times. Even if people look at you strangely with that POV setup, it'll always make the best results. I agree about the 86/BRZ feeling less fun than the MX5. Even these facelift models still have that torquedip around 4000rpm so it doesn't feel like it accelerates urgently than the MX5 which has 45hp less. Although to be fair, the short gearing, less weight, flat torque+power curve makes the MX5 feel slightly faster anyway. I'm sure with a turbokit or a bigger displacement engine for 50~100 more horsepower, 86/BRZs will be much more appealing again.
smilepermile no problem! Chris is an awesome guy. I had binaural for a bit, but I got a faulty unit. The only difference between our setups in me lacking binaural. It does feel wierd driving with it, but the quality is worth it. The MX5 RF is an awesome car. I just bought a 2018 Focus ST, but once my lease is up, I see a mx5 rf in my future;)
I think if somebody made a new hybrid clutch which combines qualities of the torque converter and a classic mechanical friction clutch - that would be awesome! Imagine clutch where the more you press the pedal - the more it turns from the hard friction coupling to softer and softer hydraulic coupling and vice versa - you release clutch pedal slowly and clutch goes from the hydraulic turbine coupling to a mechanical one. You know, in the same way they have lock up clutches now in torque converter automatics. Also such a clutch would never wear out, like those wet lockup clutches in torque converter automatics. Alternatively they could make a DCT combined with a hydraulic torque converter or coupling - when car moves slowly or when engine is below certain RPM - mechanic clutch disengages and coupling is soft and hydraulic but as you press gas pedal and RPM rises - then mechanical wet clutch locks up and the car behaves exactly as if you were driving pure mechanical DCT with no hydraulics. I need to talk to someone like that guy from Engineering Explained or some other smart transmission expert, I'm curious if such hybrid manual + hydraulic clutch transmissions were ever made. I've heard some Acura had something like that (a DCT plus torque converter or something), maybe I heard about it from Engineering Explained but I don't remember now.
This thing goes for 23k in canada which is hella cheap for a new car, maybe i misread the sticker, kind of want one. Are they fun to tune, can you keep the engine NA and get decent power out of it
I really want to like this car, but I just can’t - not sure why I’m a definite Toyota person now, I’ll likely never buy any other type of car In the UK I have an Auris (that’s a Corolla everywhere else) Bullet proof it is 12 years old and 101000 miles and it’s just getting started
One question, why don’t people just go from 5th or 4th to neutral and stop instead of putting stress on your engine by downshifting to engine brake and then to neutral, i see everyone downshift to a low gear and then neutral but I don’t know why
@@brad300ZXS16 Doesn't it hurt your clutch though? What's easier, replacing easily reachable brake pads, or replacing worn out clutch which requires disassembling half of the car?
@@brad300ZXS16 what's the secret? I'm really curious how is it possible to make your clutch wear non-existent? let's say you start from full stop - you can't just release clutch too fast, you have to do it slow enough and it means that it will slip a little in the beginning, right? so when it slips it wears down, hence it seems like wear is unavoidable in principle. what am I missing here?
No its not.. I think that spoiler is an option. the GT comes with its own spoiler, heated seats and the little screen on the dash with a g meter, torque curves, engine info, a track timer, the better center console with dual zone climate control and such.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a cheaper performance car used as I think we all know how it was treated from the previous owner. Thats why I typically prefer new, as I know exactly how the car was broken in from new and how it was treated. However, if you can find a nice example for a decent price from a reputable dealer, thats a good idea as you will not have to worry as much about depreciation.
