2018 Toyota Land Cruiser - Redline: Review

Way overdue for a complete redesign, the series 200 Toyota Land Cruiser sells in incredibly small numbers in America. With only about 3,000 units moved annually it not hard to see why Toyota rarely changes this truck. However, with an all-new version in the works, how does the current 2018 model hold up against some very new competition?

Luckily in Australia we have the 4.5L V8 turbodiesel with 9.5L/100km. With a tank size of 138 Litres gives a range of over 1,450 km which is over 900 miles.

It’s game over for reliable/durable diesels in the US. Toyota knows this and won’t risk their reputation for reliability on trying to make a US EPA compliant diesel. They stay away from turbos for the most part as well. They focus on what they can do best here and they do it really well!

You said this 2 weeks ago "Why I see so many soccer moms drive these trucks if it’s a man truck?" I just see far more "soccer moms" driving Tahoe's and Lexus RX's than Land Cruisers....I just think its funny that that the most durable and reliable SUV sold is some how not cool because it's perceived as woman's truck.

The problem with car reviews is that the person giving the review is biased in some sort of way. Always comparing apples to oranges and they never really seem to grasp the idea of the vehicles. The stuff he brought up that he didn't like are minute and are meant to weed out buyers. Toyota has an suv for any type of driver if you can afford it. I feel like this guy would take a Kia stinger over this just because the stitching is better on the dash

The ting is he does no a good brand.wen u buy toyota u get value for ur money.it last a life time and u get real value for it after 10 years.wen u sell it.
@ScottRutledge
@ScottRutledge 5 лет назад
Agreed. He doesn’t seem to understand the vehicles true intrinsic value and why people buy it. Example: “It’s a full foot shorter than the Sequoia, so if you want the biggest Toyota SUV you need to go with the Sequoia.” Ummm, sure, right. Anyone who’s seriously considering a Land Cruiser would never consider a Sequoia (and vice versa). They are two Completely different vehicles for entirely different purposes/missions. It’s shorter because you want and need a shorter wheel base in order to be more effective off road. It also has much higher clearance and much stiffer and different frame and suspension for off road use. Entry and exit angles (does Sequoia even have this? Do their owners even care or think about that?). You’d never think about taking a Sequoia off-road , that thing is a large heavy pig (well, the LC is a large heavy goat, but you wouldn’t want a pig off road, you’d want a mountain goat...) How many times does he say “soft touch” in this video? Lol Anyway I think he totally misses the mark and the whole point of this amazing vehicle. I’ve had 5 friends who’ve had Range Rovers. They lasted about 3-4 years before encountering major issues , mostly electrical, chip/sensor malfunctions and engine and transmission issues. Completely unreliable, I’d never think of taking a RR off road and far away from the nearest town or civilization with my kids or family with me. No way. And are those RR’s still on the road in 25 years? Seriously, that’s the design paradigm and horizon Toyota has developed this around. How about even 10 years? At 10 years these vehicles still drive like brand new vehicles. Ask anyone who’s ever owned one. For real. Also: notice he doesn’t even bother taking it off road? That’s where this thing shines dude. You didn’t even scratch the surface of what this thing is made for. Disappointing.

@@ScottRutledge He got me with the "dated style". What? This is LC. It is an elegant brick. As long as it is not ugly like some previous Prado models it does the job. The visibility is a priority and square simple shape helps with it. I drove LC200 as a tester and ... well.. it is incredible. Too bad roads in Japan are too narrow for 2m width. I would love to see split tail gate in LC150 :) Saying all that, I think it is time to put a V6 as an option. It might work for some people - it would for me. I only mean it as a option, not the replacement.

Reliability is way more important to the average consumer than all the new electronic nannies that will cost a lot to fix at the dealer. That is where this truck and the 4runner excel. Also check the track record of all the new cars with 8 to 10 speed autos, not that great.

Cristian Jimenez stop comparing this to 4Runner, this truck is way bigger, u can throw as much money as u want onto a 4Runner, it won't magically grow into a full size SUV. The Land Cruiser it is what it is, a legendary SUV with lots of history. It doesn't sell well in the US because of how close it is priced to the Lexus LX and how dated it is. The Land Cruiser do sell extremely well in the middle east countries like UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

In Australia we have many more options than the US for the LC, some cheaper others much more expensive, the Sahara is the premium model. What you get when you buy LC is reliability, they are incredibly popular in outback Australia (and in town strangely) and in the Middle East for their deserts where in both situations reliability is extremely important. Unlike what i understand in the US that have well maintained paved roads and places to get the vehicles fixed if any issues occur, in the Australian outback you are very much on your own in many areas and the distances traveled between towns is huge often not seeing other vehicles for several days.

Considering giving it away and going to a 2019 LC, will be trying to decide between the LC and 2019 Sequoia. Hoping for some upgrades to both.

Jonel Albano Toyota will never do it. The turbo will effect reliability and they will never tarnish that reputation. Turbos are known to have problems let alone the lag that comes with them.

Jonel Albano turbos are the future with all the crap they are enforcing to all car manufacturers it’s inevitable. except if you or someone with magic power come up with a V8 NA engine that can do the job without using too much gas. Let’s be real oil will go away sooner or later and electric cars will also come into play.

Good video of a legend of an off reader. “I have an issue with the tail gate not being powered”.....”I have an issue with the third row of seats not folding up powered “? Are you too weak to do it by hand? Too many electronics mean too many potential issues.

Way overpriced when priced against the competitors but the reliability and toughness is a huge factor on this Land Cruiser. I'm sure Toyota will give deep discounts for the Land Cruiser and of course 10-15 years from now when the German and British competitors' vehicles are sitting on a ghetto used car lot or salvage yard the Land Cruiser will still be on the road.

@d1sturb3d119 5 лет назад
Lol try buying one... There aren't any discounts. Positive part is that there's no premium either. You buy at sticker price. No incentives and you pay to have the truck sent to your dealership cause typically there aren't any just sitting around.

I’ve had my UZJ100 series landcruiser new since 98’ ,it only has 93,278 miles on it and the only thing that broke on it so far in 21 years was the D transmission indicator bulb near the shift knob.Thats why anyone who’s ever owned one loves them.Literally turn the key and she starts every time....

It’s an American thing. My insurance policy for my Mercedes-Benz ML350, a mid-size SUV, classifies it as a “truck” given that the GVWR is north of 6,200 pounds.

some vehicle never need a refresh or chasis upgrade. Because they are unique, made for respect. Toyota LC is one of that. A real 4WD. Dont compare this to any 4wd which gives your Bun a good massage. They arent made for that. Also this V8 is way more capable than some v12, Not on flooring gas but places where they belong

ピーター Those that stayed on the lot were for the people who actually couldn’t afford to buy them & were just Stretching their wallets.Those who truly can afford don’t bother with gas prices.Same as those buying German cars out of warranty & cant afford to take it to the dealer when things go bad. How often do you think the ppl who can afford these drive them? Maybe to head to the cottage or go fishing or a little off roading with the kids.So the gas theory is out but for those who knowingly cannot afford the thing & buy it as family vehicle for all uses then that’s their business lol.

I don’t think the traditional Land Cruiser buyer would want the complications of the things you mentioned like air suspension, power this and that. They want to keep it tough and reliable so they can take it to their expeditions. The buyers that want all those extras can go to Lexus.

Abdelhameed Alotaibi I saw some Toyota LC Prado videos uploaded from Middle Eastern reviewers. Toyota definitely save it's best options and upgrades for that part of the world. Lexus obviously bases it's GX 570 on that platform. Toyota would sell a ton of Land Cruisers in the US if they borrowed even a few of the Prado's design queues.
