Awesome video I love repurposing those mice tails, I usually cut off the bulb and use the tail as a trailer on tube jigs for small bass at my local park pond. I'll definately be trying these out as well. Thanks!

Great video Nick, what great rigs I love the dental floss idea. I have had a line break at the crimped on split shot on 4 lbs test back in the day, when I had what would have been the biggest Brown Trout of my life hooked up. I really miss Trout fishing back in Jersey I loved to fish the Musconetcong and the Pequest rivers. Good luck this season.

I want to thank you for sharing this video. I made one of the jigs with the shot on the bottom. I have never been able to even tight a knot correctly and I was able to make the jig! I can't wait to try it and see what I what happens.

Will try a few of those rigs this Spring. A test of identical grubs with and without a jighead. Have been throwing the same combo of head & grub in Ozark streams & rivers for decades. The flexibility of those rigs is what's really interesting ... adaptable to different depths & water-flow.

I've been an avid stream fisherman in "The Driftless" for 30yrs now, & liscense guide for 25. Due to health/injuries, I can't handle a fly rod like I used to. If course I still use other more techniques, but since I started using primarily plastics about 4yrs ago, this was absolutely the most helpful video I found. Ive adapted some, but for stream trout 101 this is the best/most helpful video I've watched. Thank you! From there, I started using other bass/walleye/crappie techniques, adapted for trout. (which I wasn't familiar with being a lifelong trout & ice fisher) If you use jigs for trout, I also recommend watching this video because a drop shot rig with sinker choked up to the eye of the hook, is jig like, but better, & you never worry about running out of jigs. Anyway,. Thank You!

I had a blast using the Floating Mice Tails, caught a lot of Char with them after I pinched of the salmon egg. Didn't think they would work great here in Sweden, but sure they did

Ive actually caught a 2 pound large mouth wacky rigging tiny worms like this with 4lb line on my 5 foot ultra light spinning setup hahaha and also a 21 inch salmon with the same outfit but with a trout magnet. I love using micro tackle like this it's a blast! That's a really cool rig idea too.

I wanted to offer a bit of feedback on your recommendation of how to rig Berkley Mice Tails on a hook. Prior to viewing this video, I hooked them straight down from the top of the ball or “egg”, like most would do. However, with your technique, I get a more sturdy rig with the ball protecting the hook. The mice tail is also more resistant to tearing off the hook and I get quick and easy hook sets this way as well. I fish with ultralight spinning gear and I go after high mountain, cold water trout here in Utah. With this bait, the trout have been running me ragged so far this Fall! Thank you again for your helpful suggestions; as the saying goes: The devil is in the details.

I like the concept, it's new to me

I learned basically that rig from a guide on Lake Fork. He would have a supply if bank sinkers (the kind with the copper wire) handy and would slip the size he wanted over the hook barb so he could control the fall with the different weights. He would frequently change the weights until he got the rate the fish liked. I like the line and stop idea. I would use a slip knot on the hook though so I could easily change the weight on the hook instead of the hook on the lure when I wanted to change the weight.

Nice,I think I'm going to be trying that scrappy doo rig for small brim,with a floating powerbait trout worm. With the right size split shot It should cast fine with my BFS setup.

You can do the the same thing with the scrappy rig just putting one end through and tying an overhand knot quicker while on the bank if you dont want to tie ahead I haven't used it for bass but will try this year kind like drop shot and Trig in one.

The trick appears to be using the tiny 4 lb. braid. Unless you can find those large-eye hooks, nothing else will fit. 4 lb. mono sure doesn't. But, there's a workaround ... instead of pre-rigging, I've just tied the hook with a Palomar knot, left a long tag end, tied an overhand knot at the required distance, and crimped on a split-shot. Easy as heck.

I rig mouse tails like this: Size 6-8 bait holder Hook through the center of the tale at the base of the head towards the head and point just out the side of the head. Creates a fierce action and works in rivers and lakes.

I like what your doing but I have been fishing stocked trout for 25 years and have developed a rig for deep vegetation covered bottoms. Let’s call it Archer’s rig. First tie 6” to 8” of line to a small swivel. (8-10lbs. Test) Attach 3 small split to the end furthers from the swivel ( only hard clamp the last split shot). Next prepare your leader ( 4 to 6 lbs test). Hook with 18” to 3 feet of leader ( depending on depth of grass ) and add another small swivel to the end of that leader. Before tying your leader swivel to the main line pass the main line through the drop weight swivel and you have my rig. The 8-10 lbs. test is used so the split shot have something they can grip yet pull off of if they get snagged up. This saves you the rest of the rig. This rig is designed specifically for fishing the “ egg sucking leach “ or other small floating baits. For bass fishermen this is essentially a scaled down drop weighted Carolina rig dedicated to connecting trout to fry pan. This rig is fished not tight line but with a bit of slack in the line.The pole is held or standing almost straight up. You will see the line move way before the trout ever feels the weight or pole giving you plenty of time to drop the rod tip and reel up any slack before setting the hook. I typically use a 6’ or longer rod to help with the slack line and hook sets.

Time to make up a dozen more scooby doo rigs...and those are some impressive NJ browns you just dropped casually in at the end lol

Great alternative, But much easier to add a split shot to the desired length of the tag end of the mainline. try treading the tag end back through the eye of the hook before adding weight. Less tieing and excess line.

Trout ain’t dumb dude, where I fish for trout in Scotland,it Can be very challenging at times, and there definitely some of the hardest fighting fish especially if your fishing light, 🎣🐟🐟

I use braid in the river.sure,I still get line twist still...I lost alot Of lures using monofilament line.also,it doesn't matter that I use Braid , they cannot see it in the dark stained river water.havent Tried these yet,but soon will.thanks for the instructional vid!

Just tied up some to see how they work...used 10lb Berkeley Nanobraid for the drop line..it has less than 2lb mono diameter and has a bit of stiffness to it..made for easy rigging

Hi, always great videos. Who makes the hook you called an "in line" hook with the vertical LARGE eye? That seems like the perfect hook for that Scrappy Doo rig, if that's what you called it. Also looks good for a treble replacement on lures where only single hook points are allowed (easier hook removal too). I know Mustad made an oversized eye 3366, maybe with an A designation, Jan's Netcraft carried them at one time. That was a long time ago. Awesome dental floss rig👍 I've used a similar rig, like the first one you showed with the shot on the leader tag, but my leader has a loop on one end and I clamp the shot to it's tag. The leader loop connects to a snap swivel on the main line. I use it for drifting worms in moving or still water. You've got some great hacks my friend, thanks for sharing!

Good information. Just wondering about the Scrappy Doo rig. Have you used longer lengths of line on your weight line? I think a longer length would keep the bait off the bottom.

I’m really looking forward to using these various Scooby rigs while wade fishing inshore flats on the Texas coast. How do these (I’ve watched most of your rig videos) rigs work with thick grass? I’m interested in running nose hooked jerk shads (banjo minnow style) but I’m wondering if I need to tie on some weed guards if they’re gonna go lower in the water column w/ your weight? And how do you get the tungsten weights to stop at that tiny knot? Bobber stops?
