I was contacted by a viewer about potentially detailing his prized Golf R. I jumped at the opportunity because I have a real soft spot for these amazing cars. This one is exceptionally gorgeous in the deep Lapiz blue. I performed a full exterior detail over the course of three days and the results were highly satisfying. I ran into some issues with a very finicky PPF clear bra. No matter what spray I used on the film, it would cloud up and I was forced to polish the "stain" out. Other than that, it went really well. The owner of this car takes great care of the car, but he wanted me to take it to the next level. Judging from his reaction, I was successful.

Pet peeve of mine when people snowfoam then begin 2 bucket washing, idea of snowfoam is to loosen dirt, THEN YOU RINSE ! ...not rub it into the paint. Was glad to see you rinsed snowfoam off then touch washed after. Lovely car, lovely colour.

If I wasn't so worried about messing up the PPF, there's a few things I could have tried, but I have seen some films go murky with any kind of chemical. I'd like to have a second go now that I have a few more years' experience under my belt.

It is an incredible colour of paint. And, very easy to work with. I was totally prepared to attack it with a two-step method, but I was surprised how effective the one-step method was. Plus, those Adam's one-step pads are incredibly easy to work with and create very little mess compared to foam. I was really happy.

His car was sitting in a lot while the lot next door was being repaved. It was really nasty stuff. My Gyeon Q2M Tar remover wasn't up to the task. I had to bring in the steam and use it in conjunction with the remover. I really need to up my "tar game". The wheel covers were primarily for the polishing step, but the Adam's one-step process generates virtually no dust so they weren't really necessary. I keep them on for the wash since I was performing a clay treatment on the car and wouldn't be pulling out the Master Blaster so it saved me from having to dry them a second time. Not sure I'm explaining that properly.

I’ve been here since the very beginning, it’s great to see you grow! Side note - Citrol 266 works GREAT on tar. Better than anything I’ve ever used. It’s one of those specialty products that is a must have for those weird situations where nothing else works.

That’s great gloss. It really grabs your attention to the paint and finish. I know you use an Ethos product, I use use P&S Bead Maker and at this point would not switch from it. But once again great attention to the “small” things that produce “big” results. Great video. I hope your customer liked it.

Awesome work Rick, watched few of your VAG featured vehicle videos. My gosh where has this car been parked, never seen so much tar on 1 car and so new. I have a non related question about your floor, how does the water drain under the tiles , you have a special drain underneath or???

If I recall correctly, the owner of that car parks next to a parking lot that was being re-paved and some collateral tar pieces ended up all over his car. Just one more challenge of owning a car in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Easily the worst place to be a car guy! There is no drain at this time, but I am going to be putting a trench/catch basin system in very soon. For now, the water just slowly flows under the floor out the door.

No, it works pretty good for me. The water evaporates a little bit, but most just flows out the door. It has been really muggy here lately so it has been a bit uncomfortable, but no moisture issues due to the usually dry air up here.

Not yet! I have a water drainage project lined up for sometime this Fall. Currently, the water just hits the floor and flows out the door, but I will having a company rip out the floor at the front of the garage and repour it with a channel and catch basin to "catch" the water. This will eliminate the annoying water freezing in the winter under the door. Stay tuned. In the meantime, have you seen my Garage Tour Video?

I really think it is because we send cheapskates to the factories to place our bulk orders and they are always in search of ways to keep their costs down so they can make more money. I wasn't able to get a few options on my SQ5 because Audi Canada decided (for some reason) to order theirs with no dynamic steering, dynamic front indicators, self-park, or cordless phone charger. (Just to name a few). Plus, Canada had a fraction of the colour options available globally. So frustrating.

It came out stunning! I'm just wondering - how did you protect the rear lights? Does such a plastic have a tendency to turn yellow over time after polishing (mostly headlights)? Cheers!

Thanks. I’m probably going to be seeing this Golf regularly so I’ll keep an eye on that. I have never had concerns with tail lights being polished. I know what you’re saying about headlights though. I usually ceramic coat those after polishing them.

I've done a lot of projects (for me at least) but I believe I used a one-step polish with the Adam's one-step pad for that entire car. It came out real nice.

I can divulge my trade secrets! Just kidding. I have a few motorized camera dollies that I set up and operate via remote control. The static shots are simply done with a tripod. It adds a lot of time to overall project, but I can't resist going for that artistic shot! Thanks for noticing my extra effort with regard to the video I capture.

Not often do I watch let alone subscribe to other professional detailers in the world, but your camera work and format ticks all my Boxes of what I’d like to achieve just don’t know where to start with video. Would appreciate maybe a tutorial/ kit used video? Amazing content 💪🏼

What can I say? That's the ultimate compliment and I thank you very much. When starting out with videos, I just set my camera up on a tripod and took pretty basic video. I was actually quite embarrassed by the quality of my earlier content, but you have to start somewhere. With each new upload, I tried to make improvements and try new things, and now I feel like my stuff is worth being proud of. My advice to anyone is just do it. Don't overanalyze it. Well, amazingly enough I only needed one 5.5" and one 4" one-step pad from Adam's to complete this Golf R. That doesn't include the hood and fenders though. Thanks for the sub! In my opinion, the spray coating is equivalent to a wax or sealant. It can be reapplied easily after a maintenance wash. If the owner gets his PPF replaced, I would be more than happy to have it back for a liquid ceramic coating application. This was the solution we came to in the interim.

Loved watching those Pretorias getting a good scrub down! Great job, Rick! I believe '18 was the first year of the gloss black trim on the side skirts instead of the previous body coloured rocker-panels/skirts as well as some other subtle changes including digital dash. Lovely car - far more capable than most out there. Possibly the best all around daily driver that exists, period.

I agree that it is a top choice for a fun daily driver. The fact you can't get one in Canada with a sunroof just baffles me though. That black trim just set the car off in my opinion. So well conceived and executed. I'd be happy with one as a second car when that time comes.

@@RADGarage Yes it'd be a hoon on old banff coach road! Yes it's unfortunate about the sunroof but it was a necessary casualty to its admission to the North American Market. Being built on the same tools as the E-Golf was an important factor in their decision to bring the car here, and it ended up bringing the benefit of a wonderful array of "spectrum" colours which were originally a part of the E-Golf marketing plan. My fave... Irish Green! Lapiz blue is the quintessential Mk7/7.5 Golf R colour though! If you havent seen it Rick, look up the Oetingger body kit that was made available for these through the VW parts catalogue. Gorgeous!

Also wondered if you usually restrict Quickjack usage to your personal vehicles... I have a pair these days most cars jacking points are certainly different... Thanks for the feedback. For my personal vehicle, I treat the PPF like paint and ceramic coat it and I will give it a light polish. The film on this R wouldn't stand for even the lightest of polishes. So, it really depends on your film. I don't often want to use the QuickJack on vehicles belonging to others because of the point you made regarding jacking points. How terrible would I feel if I inadvertently caused damage to a car? Unless it is a friend I know very well, I prefer to keep the car on the ground. Not that I don't trust the QJ, I just don't trust my luck! Yeah, the videos have a bit more variety, so I will continue to evolve and react to what viewers suggest. Thanks for stopping by.

@@RADGarage Thanks for your reply.. I have a Soul Red Mazda Miata... I had the entire hood and front quarter panels done with the rest of the car uncovered.. I have another vehicle that I had entirely PPF'd along with a ceramic coating. I must admit with the entire car "protected," I don't stress about it... But, there is the side of me that enjoys the challenging aspect of caring for bare clear coat... Take care .

I understand your point very well. Protection is great but when you enjoy the maintenance process you are denying yourself the opportunity to do what you enjoy. It's a no-win situation! But, it's also a no-loss situation.

I did consider using the QuickJack. The only issue preventing me from pulling it out was that I needed to have the option of quickly moving that car in and out of the garage over the course of the three in the event a damaging thunderstorm developed. The hail has been torrential this summer here.

Hey Rick, Just wanted to say how much I enjoy all of your videos and ask a question... How do you clean that super easy to scratch plastic that covers the instrument cluster? Seems like anything that touches that plastic if you’re not careful it’ll leave a scratch induced kinda haze...

My best advice is to never clean it. Like you say, some manufacturers use super soft and easy-to-scratch plastic and there's no trick I know to fix that aside from taking the dash apart to pull that piece out to polish. I can't get a Nano iBrid in there, so there's nothing I can do. I use a super clean and soft microfibre with a glass cleaner and just gently go over mine, and it seems to be working, but I'm sure a certain angles and in certain light, I have swirls in mine. Maybe there is someone out there that makes screen protectors for dash consoles?
