I'm sure there must be a cheaper and simpler solution that would add very little to the CD figure. You know, something like a reflective bit of glass. Maybe someone will invent it one day.
I have a feeling the passenger playing on his/her phone would easily block the driver's vision into the digital rear mirror view. And what if your screen fails to load, then you end up getting a ticket or driving dangerously?
@@TheCameltotem I know what you mean, you could easily say: never change a running system as well, but I think that these "mirros" have some benefits. Spezially in bad conditions. Rain and Snow your normal mirror might get fogged up, sprinkeled with water dropplets or you can't see it though your window in the rain because the light from behind is blinding you.
How about placing the mirror display of the far side mirror next to the driver, that way the driver just has to glance left or right of the steering wheel.
What systems redundancy do you have with this? Risk of display failure, circuit failure etc. Small mirrors harder to see so other drivers more likely to hit them etc

As a motorcycle rider I prefer classic as I can monitor drivers head position and intentions. Driving on the phone is a huge issue and introducing this tech means we can't observe other drivers like we used to
Not necessarily so. I reckon the most expensive bits are the interior screens. The external bit is just a non adjustable casing (so cheaper than adjustable mirrors) a small heater (so cheaper than that needs to heat a whole mirror) and a small video camera. An etron already has six of these and so those in the wing mirror are just another two, and they are relatively simple technology which people have in phones and dash cams. They doing extent out as much as mirror and if they do get hit there is no glass to break, just the plastic housing. My simple maths = not a big bill.
I much prefer how Hyundai, Genesis and Kia have the blind spot camera display in the instrument cluster. This allows you to keep your eyes on the road.
I was hoping it would protrude less than a traditional door mirror, for my X5 door mirror got hit by the large mirror of a bus. It is costing £1,800 for the repairs.
So useless showcase design. At first, I thought there were nothing outside but when I discovered that cameras almost the size of a regular mirror which are more prone to damage with very expensive repairs, I said what's the point of this unnecessary complication? Put nothing extending outside and provide the same vision inside and then come to me.
Drag was not the issue here, it benefits very little, that percentage he said must been only compared to conventional mirror and mirror only, not the full car drag. Also, if you already invented new technology, you dont integrate it as old one. No need for displays on sides, now display can be in front of driver, and no need for cameras at traditional point, it can be on the edge of the car, no need for wings anymore. I feel it was invented but not implemented
Hmmm doesn't actually make you take your eye off the road ,having to glance downwards, at least conventional mirrors you vision covers the main road whilst looking at your mirrors.
@Jerry Rawlings Unlikley, the big cost is inboard with the touch sensitive screens etc. Outside it is just a casing and a relatively cheap camera which is unlikely to break. Unlike a door mirror, there is no mirror to break and adjustment mechanism to break either, just the casing.

Plus horses can die. Also mirrors have this thing called distance vision, or look how far you can see back in full reflection, this is literally taking a camera and sticking it on a car with a Bluetooth system going to your phone so you can video around
Cool idea, several issue I noticed. 1. When this same sort of thing came out in Honda in 2014, is kept the mirrors and made it so you could move the far or right mirror onto your dashboard screen, with grids nice and close 2. Blind spot system makes it hard to see all directly around, especially with a high percentage of drivers changing lanes using mirrors 3. Bad location, always looking down, let's just go back to the days of an accident being caused by someone texting while driving, not playing with the screens and controls 4. Dim system, dash, if you turn the dash down to far, I really doubt you could see the screens, mirrors don't dim when the dash does 5. Most likely like Honda's lane watch, the camera has a light in it so you can see the road easier at night, (not an issue) but still in a bad spot the screens 6. They are so large, benefit of the new Hyundai lane watch and Honda lane watch is, camera is really small so someone who is most likely a criminal wont be walking and then running away with your camera mirror, this car, the exact opposite, Honda and Hyundai, little tiny on side of your mirror, except the 2014-15 civic, hanging down like a sore thumb (opinion) 7. How do you parallel park with it, something where mirrors are quit important Last. It's obviously a ploy, not a safety feature. If it's denied from some countries, it's probably because it could be considered desteactive. In conclusion, can we go back in time where the feature in a car was Bluetooth, Navi, and digital speedometer, where countries and stuff might not have to consider laws against playing with your screen because of destruction issues.
There is difference between 'ban(n)ed' and 'not yet authorised'. The real reason is that an american didn't invent them. Once a yank devises something similar that doesn't impinge patents, things will change.

Most likely less or equivalent, heated mirrors on cars cost a surprising amount from my experience and often are targeted by thieves to be stolen and resold, mounting a camera sensor should be pretty cheap if not the same cost. This is mostly a guess but either way I don't think either option on a german estate will be cheap :)
I own a civic, and the civic has a version. It's a lane watch cam that is right signal preferred on or off, and a button that can control it, all it does though is move your right mirror to a camera on your dash screen and give grids. This is a mirrorless system for only camera grid screens. Also Honda has it in the fit, insight, clarity, (Asian electric car slowly moving world wide) Ridgeline, (truck) CRZ and HRV.
Joseph Leroy mine too is an A6.. brand new with cracking headlights with no Audi explanation! Replaced them and less 6 months the same shit. Audi deny warranty and are saying washing the car causes without going into the real issue!
It won't be long till someone, used to looking at the screens inside the car, forgets there is still a part sticking outside of the door, and shears it off. Over complicated. Expensive to produce, maintain, and, replace WHEN it fails. Easily defeated by putting something over the screen. Drag? Seriously, how fast are you going to be going in a car that actually has mirrors, that you have to worry about drag? Anything to avoid having a driver look at, and, acknowledge there are other humans around them on the road. Make it more like a movie, or a video game, then wonder why there is so little respect, and, courtesy shown on the roads. Silly idea, and, a waste of an engineers time.
Sir S-Spec It’s not about speed... it’s there to increase driving range. According to Audi the camera Mirrors increase the driving range by 10km which is really a lot. It also makes the blind spot much smaller.
Sir S-Spec Just one question: how often did your rear view camera break? It’s basically the same tech and if it increases the safety for me and other people I’m fine with it.

Completely unnecessary and an overkill on technology. Nothing was wrong with the side mirror. It was far less expensive, far more reliable and did the job just fine. If it's not broke, don't fix it.
and that’s why everything is so expensive with audi. Mechanic will charge you thousands of dollars for job that should be simple which isn’t because all over engineered and complex for nothing.
