YamYams, you need some barkbusters pronto 'specially since you are off-roading. Might I also suggest eBay shopping for a used, 2015 Scrambler throttle tube (~$15) for some serious street hooning fun...trust me on this, with such a low investment cost you can't lose. Check out my ride yesterday, the older, "quick turn" throttle-tube makes the motor much more responsive. They re-tuned the fueling since 2017 so it's not snatchy like the first gen Scramblers, the Sled is really a hoonigan 'tard in disguise ;.D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-osPZMEK1YdM.html

Trikes are cool because they're different and fun and as long as you don't expect the riding experience to be much like riding on a regular motorcycle and take it for what it's worth with the unique riding style they take to operate, then they're a blast in their own one of a kind way! Plus you can carry a bunch of extra stuff which is great if you're touring or commuting.

Main problem I have with vintage bikes is that its "too soon" for me. 10 years ago we had bikes with carburetors, round headlights, no ECU so no digital dash as normal bikes, I was happy we were finally moving forward. Heck the bikes I'm looking at still have all of those things because they are 15 years old.

I came here from watching dual sport vlogs. I don't care much about street bikes but I returned for the humor and occasional economics lesson. I'm sort of amused to see that you've caught the bug. But, but, but: "Is that really what motorcycling is all about?" said Yammie: "Is it about getting the most bang for buck?" You probably shouldn't continue to identify yourself as an economics major while dismissing the question of value so easily. I hope this detour doesn't hurt your channel but I am happy to have you join us down here in the dirt and mud!

While remembering those Triumph TR 6's I rode in the 60's the memory of 'breaking the clutch' also nudged itself into the experience. Before starting the bike the clutch lever was pulled and the start lever was stroked until it went down with no resistance - the plates were free, not glued together from a layer of oil. That was done at the first start of the day and no worries after that. I do that with my Sled and the first shift is as smooth as running through the gears the rest of the day.

Shifting into Neutral isn't only a Ducati thing. My last new Kawasaki was just as bad until the first oil change, and it didn't get "easy" to find Neutral until around 3500 miles. My Monster 797 also improved dramatically after the first oil change and ever since 1000 miles the shifting is smooth as butter. A lot of these reviews are on brand new bikes so I guess that's where the stereotype comes from.

Thanks for the review. It worked for me :) I was today testing out new Tenere, KTM's new 790 Adv R and Desert Sled. I'm looking for a do-everything bike: commuting, long trips, intermediate off-road, cruising. Tenere is the sensible one. Best price, best ergonomics, easy to live with and can do everything. 790 Adv R is fast! But too expensive for me when compared to Tenere, since Tenere too is over my skill-level. Surprisingly, Tenere felt lighter and more maneuverable. Desert Sled is a compromise. Not so good in the highway (130kmh is exhausting), ergonomics require a lot of tweaking (standing up was very uncomfortable), finding neutral in stop-and-go traffic was problematic, the bike felt small compared to the others, the range is an issue on longer trips. But the looks :) In essence, buying a new bike isn't a sensible thing to do at all. This made me think, hmm if it is so, then I should buy the best looking insensible option :) and live the short-comings. My current bike is DRZ400SM w. TKC80's and other mods - meaning taking supermotos off-road is my thing, but longer trips on it are painful (literally). Desert Sled seems to be the best replacement for it (this is me convincing myself). Will be waiting for the quote for the dealer.

Great video, I’ve been wanting a Desert Sled since the first prototype pics were dropped! But I’m even more tempted with the new hydraulic clutch and other goodies. Currently I ride an “actual” street legal dirt bike 2010 Husky TE250, and I love ripping around town on it and of course off road, but I want something that is a little more street friendly and sexy looking - and I’m smitten by desert sled. That being said, for your neutral issue - I was having the same issue with my dirt bike, turns out there was the tiniest amount of air in the system, and with the tolerances being so tight it didn’t take much for it to hang up the clutch a little bit, so what you should try is reversing bleeding the clutch. get an automotive syringe, pull the clutch fluid cover off, remove the little valve inside (usually white and snaps into place and only goes one way - usually domed - domed side up), put a wrench on your slave cylinder nipple, attach your syringe with the required fluid - usually DOT 4, crack the nipple then slowly squeeze in the fluid, you will see the level rise in your reservoir and maybe some tiny air bubbles. Snug down the nipple, remove the syringe, clean up any fluid that may have dripped over, re install the white internal cap - should snap into place, put your reservoir cover back on, and voila your clutch should be bled. This cleared up all kinds of clutch hanging for me. My clutch is a brembo unit. Keep up the great work with these vids! 😁

Good video. Nice bike. Seems expensive for rough trail given how common it is to drop a trail bike. I wonder if your be better off with a decent street bike and a duel sport beater you don’t mind dropping. Also seems heavy - drop it on your leg during a water crossing or rough trail and it won’t be easy to get off.

My #1 bike is Ducati Multistrada. I cannot recommend it enough. I have been researching the Sled for a lot of the reasons you highlighted on this video. I really just want a bike I can flick around and holligan both on and off road. I don’t want a big adventure bike with bags in enough to carry a weeks worth supply. There are great bikes that serve that purpose...The sled fits a different need perfectly for me.

Ive owned crotch rockets, dirt bikes, and Harley’s. The desert sled is the best bike in my stable. Keeps up just fine on the highway with the cruisers and rockets. And will comfortably do 150km/h on those dirt straight stretches and leave those ADV guys loaded down with bags in the dust. It is a fucking hooligan machine. And any serious rider that likes to put a bike through its paces will really enjoy this thing. Its the best daily ive ever had. But its not so aggressive and over the top that a less experienced rider can’t enjoy it. Its light, its quick and it turns heads. People always want to talk about it. I really love the desert sled. Hi Yammie! I’m thinking between the desert sled and the hypermotard. Goal is a roadbike/ adventure bike. I’m not tall. Just 170cm in height. I have tried the hypermotard with adjusted suspension and i was able to hold it upright with tippy toes. No plans with the Bulky BMW GS. Really considering this dessert sled. Thanks!!

Omg they still have that problem with finding Neutral! I remember having that problem with my 81 SSD 900 Darmah years ago lol Other than that I like this bike so much !

Kinda like a supermoto with retro styling and a lower seat height and the keyword is "fun". I already own a DRZ400SM so if I wanted a second bike, I would choose something naked and full street purpose only like an FZ07/FZ6 but if I didn't own a supermoto, this is something I'd consider.

Did you test the Triumph Street Scrambler 900cc? If so why did you buy the duck instead? I am getting either one of those two bikes this summer. Need some advice. Oh and awesome video as usual. Thanks man.

For my first bike, I wanted an all around bike... I got a 72 cl350 scrambler it was not a great dirt bike and not a great street bike(cause she had knobbies) I still loved her till death

Yammie Noob this is amazing. I wondered if you could give me some advice regarding the 2018 to 2019 changes? Here in UK the 18' is around 7k... the 19 is around 9k... not sure the updates justify the hoik in price? txxxxxxx

Man I bought, Himalayan for my country side home, I wanted a cheap and durable machine, I didn't have any higher hopes from Himalayan, but its surprising me with its performance, ... I agree - You don't need 1000 CC engines, you need batter suspension and less weight for offroads..

I feel so bad for today’s riders, there’s not much to choose from with everyone specializing. Those of us who are in our mid to late 50’s were so blessed with an absolute buffet of bikes and really couldn’t go wrong with whatever we chose to ride. The Big 4 were cranking em out in every form imaginable and the H-D/Triumph/Ducati guys were there for those who weren’t ready for rice. Rickman-Metessi and Bultaco, Hodaka and Can-Am, Maico and Penton the list is endless. Ride On.

After seeing Yammie buy a Scrambler, I went out to enact a long-time plan: Buy a dualsport-adv bike and give it that scrambler look. One Kawasaki KLR650 and a long time swapping out the headlight, gauges, and plastics later, and I've achieved something similar for half the cost. You hit the nail on the head, Yam, you're riding a mid-weight ADV bike that's missing the odd, edge-ful transformer styling.

@Jeremy R I argue it CAN handle real trails if you go more carefully/slowly about it, and I routinely ride black diamond trails with a mountain bike. But, that aside, you just argued then that modding a KLR is even MORE like a Scrambler.

Yammie, I'm a freshly new young squidlet who's crazed about scramblers, specifically the desert sled as it's the most capable of actually going off road (I'm huge on motocross but want a bike to on the road too). Would the DS be a good first bike to get?

Good to hear a younger person eschewing the specmanship nonsense. You should have tried the Triumph 1200 XC though. It's a way more practical bike than the XE and cheaper too.

5:56min are those hex bolts suppose to sit so far out or has there been a guard removed, surely if you screwed the bottom in it would mess with swingarm

The Elefant 900 I had was great off-road. I think this would handle it better.

Noob, I would really rather have a DS over a T7. However, would H2O cooled always outweigh air-cooled? Honest question on that issue. Also, I wouldn't be afraid to use a T7, especially for long adv tours, and I might want to polish and look at The DS too much.
