Jeep brought the Cherokee nameplate back in 2014 along with a controversial face. The 2019 Cherokee now wears a family grille that's closer to the ones on Grand Cherokee and Compass. Tom Voelk travels to Southern California to drive the 2019 Trailhawk and Limited models with Jeep’s powerful new engine, a 2-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

My apologies to Brian (not Brain) Nielander for the typo in the video. I'll argue he's smart enough so that the spelling gaffe isn't really a mistake. If I uploaded the corrected version, all of your witty comments would disappear.

Great review Tom. Thanks for all you do! I have owned two Jeep Cherokee's, both were 2014 models with the 2.3 L V-6 Pentastar engines. Both were very capable, and dependable. First one was purchased new, second one was purchased as a repo, that had ALL the extra equipment in it.

I would say Tom is one of, if not the best automotive journalists out there, Always a pleasure to watch his reviews.Calm, informative, no screaming over-exuberance! (God knows why I watch his reviews as I am on a different continent, and most of the vehicles are notavailable here to buy, and I could not afford to buy any of them anyway (If i can't pay cash, I do without) :). Regardless, thanks for the great content.

It's a well done rig, more expensive than many in this segment but it's also built for more off road prowess. My drive partner from Seeking Alfa really enjoyed the new engine. We both agreed it transforms the Cherokee, especially from the standard 2.4-liter four. I like the growl from the V6 better though. No shrimp or champagne. All meals were nice buffets and there was a coffee stop during the on-road drive route at The Coffee Bean (which frankly, made the worst mocha I've ever had). It's pretty much what a corporate retreat would offer at a nice hotel. I would be happy to stay at a Motel 6 and eat fast food if I had the same access to the cars and personnel. For me that's what I enjoy. I must have talked to Mike Downey the Vehicle Line Executive for three hours about what into the vehicle and why they did it. I'm a nerd that way.

As a '17 Trailhawk owner, i took her out on the trails stock with a bunch of wranglers...she impressed the crap out of me and most of the wranglers. I'll eventually lift and and do bigger tires, but i'll be taking her on the trails stock for a while. Not a fan of the new front end of the '19 though. Road noise with the A/T tires is actually barely noticeable imho, much quieter than my brothers xterra. Pavement handling is great, and on road trips i get ~25mpg. My only regret...didn't get the sunroof...

We owned 2 2016 AWD Sport models with the 2.4L engine. One of my favorite vehicles, and so much so we just purchased another, this time a used V6 Limited, to replace a different vehicle that was just totaled by someone running a red light. Thinking of trading my Ram 1500 in for another as these were the best vehicles for Western NY winters and(IMO) one of the best handling CUVs on the market. The 2.4L was also great on gas traveling at highway speeds. I easily averaged 28 MPG on my 30 mile commute and reached as high as 32 MPG on a drive through the hilly areas of the state on over-sized all terrain tires. Equipped with the cold weather package it was a hard to beat value.

Ah, those are serious accusations sir, one that could upend the bath tissue industry. Early on I chose Kirkland because I figured Costco wold always carry it (whereas other brands could be rotated). I needed a constant metric, plain and simple. I didn't consider that the bundle size would change though (they got slightly larger about 10 years ago). That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Did you try driving at night? Im curious to see how the factory LEDs perform compared to the halogens in the 2014s. Also, i see that you mentioned towing capacity but didnt see a hitch, is that an extra package youd have to buy for extra for the trailhawk?
@DrivenCarReviews

I drove at dusk but it wasn't enough to tell. I'll assume they are better. Brian said the LED lights have an advantage over the outgoing versions because they are mounted higher so they could be aimed more optimally. Optional on all models, the tow package is only available for the 2L turbo and V6 engines.

Heated rear seats, mainly. Also a leather wrapped dashboard. I think the Limited is a better value for a road-going model. The Trailhawk is best if you will be off-roading and want a quieter, smaller vehicle than a 4Runner or Wrangler.

We had a 2017 Cherokee Traillhawk with the 3.2 V-6. We traded it for a new 2023 Grand Cherokee L Limited trim. However we couldn't stand the new Uconnect 5. In fact JD Power just lowered their ratings for the Dodge Ram due to that new Uconnect5. We traded the Grand L back in for a new 2023 Cherokee Trailhawk with the 2.0 turbo and good old Uconnect4. On the highway we are getting 28 mpg! I always hated the oil filter system on that V-6 with the cartridge. The turbo has a conventional spin on filter. Only negative on the 3.2 the oil filter/cooling housing is plastic and cracked at about 70,000 miles. We lost 5 quarts of oil going down the road before the engine light came on. Watch those plastic housings like a hawk!

Tom, how many people realistically "stash" their skis inside a crossover these days? I think the 60/40 second row split works well for most buyers.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 лет назад
I do it all the time when I go skiing in my Volvo. No wind noise from a roof rack and my bindings stay clean and grit free. When I was bring my son and his friends it worked great. Also, boards and skis are harder to steal from inside the car. For a friend of mine, 40/20/40 was a deal breaker. I use the example to point out what I think would make the car a better vehicle. Not everyone is going to need that feature but for some it would improve the usability.

It was Jeeps number one seller for over a year and you change the look? I bought a 2016 trailhawk and have no intention of "upgrading" if it just looks like every other model.

Thanks! I think I'm going to be getting the new 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel when it comes out here in the next three or four months. I never liked the design of my Trailhawk, I bought it because I fell in love with the interior and was only considering vehicles with a rear locking diff. FCA is doing an amazing job with their interiors, and now that they listened to the public and added that rear locking diff, I'm sold. I just wish FCA made an offroad worthy truck halfway in size between the Wrangler and the Ram 1500.

Huh? What does that have to do with anything? You said in the video you wonder who actually takes their Trailhawks offroad. He said he is one of the people who does. What does that have to do with a lifted Datsun? I mean people put monster lifts on Chevy Caprices, doesn't make them offroadable.

Much improved, not as much cargo capacity as I'd want but a nice option to a Rav 4 or CRV. Just to show the Buick wagon has 70 cubes vs high 50's in the Cherokee and similar vehicles. I don't think many people understand the cargo capacity is not that great in the smaller CUV's.

Toyota4Life hahaha. I thought that was funny as well. The only thing is that there isn't any CRV or RAV4 package you could get to do that kind of off-roading. I would love to see a Forester tackle this course though.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 лет назад
Some backstory here- Talking to the Jeep Jamboree crew that built the course, FCA asked them to increase the difficulty from the original version they created to show off the extra ground clearance, 4WD system and increased approach and departure angles of the Trailhawk. Video doesn't show how steep the grades are or the size of the rocks well. It was a very challenging drive that CR-V, RAV4 and others simply can't tackle. A Jeep engineer said a standard Cherokee with Active Drive II could probably have made it with upgraded tires but they didn't want to risk scuffed fascias or pranged undercarriages because of the lower ground clearance. Other crossovers in this segment have fine attributes, but Jeep owns it when it comes to off roading. As I always suggest, buy what you need.

Of course, this is a new model but quality and reliability of the brand down the road has often been disappointing.

Why the hell is the turbo four only a $500 premium in the Cherokee, and in the Wrangler it’s a $2000 premium?
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 лет назад
In Cherokee it's a $500 premium over the V6 which costs $1,745 in most Cherokees (Overland 4x4 and Trailhawk come standard with the V6. For the rest the standard engine is the 2.4-liter non-turbo four). The Wrangler's standard engine is the V6 and its turbo four-cylinder gets a mild hybrid system that Cherokee doesn't get because of packaging constraints. .

I forgot about that mild hybrid system. Thank you. Very helpful answer.

is their a video or something of you explaining this new mild hybrid system turbo engine? I'm stuck in a deadlock on what i should buy for my mom, i want to get the wrangler but its not pratical as it has horrible mpg, so i was looking more towards the compass... unless this new wrangler improves its mpg..

1) I'd like to see other SUVs attempt the exact same course. 2) what does Trail Rated mean? Compared to a different brand of vehicle? Who gives it that rating?
@RichardJoashTan

Google "Jeep Trail Rated" and see for yourself. I already test drove the pre-facelift Trailhawk and it's amazing.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 лет назад
I suggest you do what Mr. Tan says. It's Jeeps own rating that they take seriously. I've been to its proving grounds in Michigan where they have recreated part of the Rubicon trail to test suspension articulation, traction and maneuverability. It's impressive.

Nice review, Tom. I rented a V6 Trailhawk for a 5 hour round trip and thought the vehicle looked sharp, except for that weird front end. However, I thought the engine was a bit weak. I actually thought it was a turbo four at first and was impressed with the grunt but when I found out it was actually a V6, I got disappointed. The highway ride was not comfortable. The off road suspension was bouncy and steering and vehicle were wondering around at highway speeds. I hope the new model has improved on road feel. It does look nicer, although the rear end reminds me of a Mitsubishi Outlander circa 2006/7 model year.

It's funny that you call the 2019 model "soft", all the new Jeeps are "soft" other than Wrangler. No solid axles and terrible 4WD systems? I'll keep my 2003 WJ with the 4.0 I6, NP242 t-case, and Dana solid axles. Heated steering wheel or otherwise. They can keep all that crappy computer controlled 4WD to themselves too.

If jeep would still build the classic cherokee and make it affordable , no frills, just solid , square and badass, they would sell millions. Nothing built today can equal the offlroad performance of the classic cherokee, these new cherokee's cost too much, aren't as capable and have too many electronics. Jeep has lost its way, it used to be the everymans 4x4, now its all marketing.

So how can you call this trail rated when you can not even get a real trail tire for it? Don't get much response from jeep. they just say we will void your warranty if you put a bigger tire on it. 1500 miles on my 2018 trailhawk and I am ready to get rid of it. This CAR is for trail rides.......Paved bicycle trails.

I actually talked about rentals with some of the FCA folks. The versions that make it to the rental fleets are egregiously bad. That's what wealthy people who can afford to travel (and buy cars) are exposed to. Practically drives them from the brand.
