Test drove a Nissan Rogue once. The windshield wipers wouldn't turn off because the rain sensor was broken and there was no way to override it. W.T.F? Why would you ever have that not able to be bypassed in case it stopped working and why would you design the circuit to fail in the ON position? That does not show that the electrical engineering was done correctly. Maybe they have corrected those problems now, but those are mistakes you don't make as a if you have half a brain. It did drive well and was comfortable. Nissan did fix the problems with CVT by putting in stronger parts in it. The tech for those is still kind of new, so you aren't going to see the durability that other transmission have. The car isn't designed to last longer than 250k miles, so the transmission only has to last that long.

Also for Mr. Roman, EuroNcap, the european automotive institute for safety, recently put out a statement for pushing automakers towards putting more physical button and commands for basic functions instead of hiding them in complicated menus in the infotainment screen, since to their studies some function like climate or wipers (looking at you Tesla) are more detrimental to safety if put in a screen instead of buttons. So half a win for analogue lovers!

@matthewshultz8762

Not only for safety but just for simple reliability. If the HVAC interfaces through the screen and the screen has a bug or issue, why does it need to take out one of the needed functions of the vehicle? Not to 'back in the day' this issue but as recently as the late 2010s if your 'screen'/double din radio crapped out all you lost was the radio and maybe maps/smartphone integration. Customers are left with a stupid high repair for the screen in order to fix the HVAC instead of just leaving it broken. In my opinion, everything other than Stop/Go/Steering/wipers/mirrors/exterior lights/HVAC/seat position can be in some proprietary big screen as it's just extra 'features' that don't affect the basic function of the vehicle. Everything else like seat heaters, radio, navigation, 'apps', etc. is just filler crap that is a distraction and not necessary for driving.

Fun fact: a lot of locksmiths wont program new keys to nissan rogues because certain years had a chance of bricking the Body Control Modules if you try to add a key. It happens to the Nissan technicians too, they just replace the bcm and dont tell you if it happens. There was no recall for it, and it usually occurred with the push to start rogues.

My wife travels frequently for work and her employer rents her cars. Stingy as they are, they get her a compact car. Her last car was a Kia Soul. She's gotten a Chevy Spark. A couple cars ago she was at the counter and the person in front of her had chewed out the clerk. So when her turn came, she joked around "What crawled up his ass and died, eh?" Her kindness earned her an upgrade, a Nissan Rogue. She was excited not to drive a clown car. After a week with the Rogue, she wanted the econoboxes back. That's saying something because she doesn't give half a crap about cars.

The Rogue is the darling of the rental car industry. No one complains about getting a Rogue. The yuppies going from Park City to Telluride aren't going to crash it, they don't have fleet wide recalls like Chrysler products. I warned my buddy about these, but he bought one anyways. First gen, awd, cvt, loaded. He's got 120K miles on it with zero problems so far. I've done the CVT service twice and just basic maintenance. @apb1236
@apb1236 2 месяца назад
Exactly. While a bit more fragile than a Hondyota, just a little maintenance (especially with the CVT) will make it last much further than public perception. However, the typical owners of these cars tend to forever be in a life crisis of some sort and choosing between food for the kids or regular oil changes tend to be weighed often.

Took me a LONG time to scroll before I found a positive comment, but I just wanted to say that my father's Rogue, besides being boring, has been a really good, reliable car. He doesn't skip any maintenance, and there were 0 surprises for far despite racking up over 80k miles in less than 2 years. The infotainment sucks, the safety features are more annoying than useful, it's slow, but the suspension feels good over bumps, quiet on the highway, has 7 seats, a pretty decent tan leather interior and it's very easy to drive. It was also very cheap to buy. Even as a car guy I think it's totally fine, and frankly, I'd nearly always pick a well maintained car with a sketchy reputation over a reliable car that has been neglected.

My lovely widowed neighbor just purchased one of these as her first ever “SUV”. She always wanted an SUV; but her husband said no. She always wanted that gnarly ugly tree removed from the front yard; her husband said no. He passed on. The tree went away. The SUV came to be. It was to replace her trusty 2.5 SE Altima; with all the dog slobber on the back windows and claw marks on the outside of the back doors. Her church friends and son (the lawyer) told her to check out an Equinox. That was nice she thought, but it didn’t “feel” as nice as the Nissan. So with that, her dealership friend set her up with a late model 2019 Rogue SV program car. Pretty much every option. Except AWD. Except a sunroof. Except fog lights. And maybe a thing or two here and there, but it’s really clean. She likes it. The less she knows, I think the happier she’ll be. But then again, perhaps she relying on faith over fear.

One thing that Roman said is true of Nissans - they're very comfortable. I still think the "zero gravity" seats are some of the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in, and they usually have really good adjustability in the seats and also the telescoping steering column. So many cars I've driven have a compromise for me - either my legs are comfortable and my arms are stretched out, or my arms are comfortable and my legs are cramped and my knees bent awkwardly. I've never had a problem with Nissans.

@nickpelland74
@nickpelland74 2 месяца назад
I worked on these as a tech a lot for nissan. Nobody maintains them and wonders why the cvt blew up at 80k. If you change the cvt fluid every 30k they tend to last. People expect a vehicle to be a refrigerator like the crv when they buy these and they are actually high maintenance. Brakes quality is garbage 60k replacement all around. The tiniest exhaust leak will kick an engine light failing you for inspection. A Toyota or a Honda will always be a better jdm for a low budget. Buy as much accord as you can afford.
@domenik8339
@domenik8339 2 месяца назад
Replacing the CVT fluid every 30K is just such a rediculous request. For reference, the subaru CVT fluid change is 90-120K depending on how hard you push your car. Grandma driving to the grocery store will probably never need it replaced.

I've owned a 2018 rogue. I'm a car guy but I bought it because I needed a safe vehicle for my child and to keep the ex off my back. I also was tired of putting money into my 06 silverado diesel and my 89 f250 with a 460. I also no longer have livestock and didn't need a great big truck anymore. I test drove everything in the class and being a big hairless gorilla, I fit best in the rogue. I kept it for four years which is the max I'd recommend owning one. In that time I abused the hell out of it and it took with well enough. Living in utah with all of the mountain ranges I decided to buy a 2018 f150 2.7 EB. In the year I've owned this f150 I haven't been able to keep the CEL off for more than a month. The rogue only had a CEL once and it was for the gas cap. That being said I did have to have the dealer "flush" the trans and it was $600.00 the manufacturer recommends doing that every 30k. Kinda spendy but all and all even taking it down off road mountain terrain it handled well just didn't have the power and unfortunately didn't have the cargo capacity I needed for my lifestyle.

Then they need to come in and top off the oil every 3 weeks because it burns the oil so quick. Or people that don't believe me when I tell them 95% of new cars recommend Full Synthetic oil. I have other examples but I'm already yapping a little more than a RU-vid comment should warrant.

Our whole family drives Toyotas, but if we need a rental, Nissan makes it painfully easy to connect your phone and navigate the screen. The only issue renting Nissans is that a lot of them have headlights so wimpy that you can see better driving with just the marker lights and ultra bright drl.

I really enjoyed the Duality Of Man between the two ends of the episode, and then sandwiched in the middle was Mr Regular channeling the mechanic from old Motorweek episodes, calmly but emphatically explaining PFI vs DI. Perfect. And I think both takes on the Rogue and its owners are valid. Car owners contain multitudes and the person who buys a Rogue because /they're the reason/ their life is out of control, and the person who is responsible but has just been dealt a bad hand and buys a Rogue to bank on the warranty are both out there. At least neither of them drive like Altima drivers.

Hearing a defense of a Nissan Rogue is like hearing a defense of a wild racoon that broke into my house and somehow ate all of my Phil Collins CDs in eleven minutes. The Nissan Rogue embodies the feeling of being trapped after making a simple, tragic mistake. Everything about a car's comfort, performance, and fuel economy all become moot points when the car is kept together by crossed fingers and willful denial kept up to postpone a breakdown in the owner's mental constitution. There is everything to loathe about a car built so terribly inside and out that it fails to even almost fulfill its duty as an appliance, which role (nearly) all passenger vehicles are ultimately beholden to. If a car such as this punishes you for trying to get six-digit mileage out of it, what use would it be drive it in the first place.

On the subject of late 2010 Nissans, my wife got a used 2017 Pathfinder in the beginning of 2022. We traded in a 2015 Santa Fe XL towards it that had just gotten a bunch of work done to its timing system and transfer case; and last I heard it ended up blowing its engine a month or two after we got rid of it. The Pathfinder seemed like a good upgrade, it was top trim so you had plenty of creature comforts, lots of room, managed to tow our small camper fairly well considering its size. But I never trusted the CVT, and it was Direct Injection as well. And since it was technically a work vehicle so it did sit and idle a fair bit. And sure enough, a little over a year after we got it the engine fan started rattling. Then the lifters started ticking and we knew it had turned into a time bomb. Ended up trading it towards a V6 Ram 1500 about a year and half after we got it so we could avoid having to deal with the cost and lengthy repair time of getting the head and timing system serviced. I just hope whoever got it is keeping up with the CVT servicing for their sake...
