It blows me away how you are able to 1) do all of this genuinely-quality work as effectively as you do, 2) record and edit it into concise snippets of quality entertainment for us, 3) manage to find the time to reply to as many fans as possible, and 4) still manage to make a profit (I presume.) You're a gem, dude. I will be here until 1,000,000 subscribers and beyond.
I also work a full time job and spend 10-14hrs a week at the gym (sometimes I have to skip for the marathon weekends). It is getting harder, as my channel grows, to reply to everyone but I try to keep up whenever I have free time. I have not lost on a rebuild yet after doing over 1000. I thank you for the support. I would not be here without you guys and the support keeps me motivated to make more videos. Thanks for watching.
Dear @@vehcor Good heavens! I should have known better already but because you don't wear a cape I didn't. 😁 ;-) You're a kind of Superman respectively superhuman! My deepest respect. You look extremely fit, strong, healthy and definitely younger. Congrats and Kudos. 👍👌👏 Best regards luck and health.
Thanks, we will see how long I can keep it in decent shape. It is a piece of equipment and things happen even as much as I try to be careful. So far so good though, just some wear on the deck but there is no way around that. Thanks for watching.
I have a 2019 PJ B6, with drive over fenders, and a 14K gvw. I've used it to haul a few vehicles, and mine and my folks SXS on a trip to NH. I've been nothing but impressed with my trailer! I also opted to get it in desert tan, so it looks good behind my "commando green" ram 2500. Just a friendly tip for you, if you want to help save the life of your ramps, flip them upside down, so when it rains while you're driving, water doesn't collect in the c channel or the ramps. Awesome video man!! Thank you for some of inspiration for my trailer!
@@MrBigredtaco99 I really wanted the 14k super wide with monster ramps but the ROI just wasn't there for me. It was way more than I needed and purchase and operating costs are much higher. Thanks for the tip on the ramps, so simple but I never thought of it. I am less concerned with the rotting c channel and more with the fact that every time I pull them out I get soaked. lol Thanks for watching and good luck with your trailer.
I've got 2 full tilt trailers ones a 16k gvw suretrac deck over (it's a monster has 14ply tires on it) and the other is 14k striker a non decokover with 10ply tires wish I had a hydraulic dove goose with tandem duals
Man !! This has been one of my favorite videos ever. You really made all the modifications look easy when I know it's not. I read quite a few comments and your answers, and I might be even more impressed with your brain. lol one thought I about the deck you said about it rotting, do they make a composite that would be thick enough and also not crack under the weight of a car or what ever you're hauling?
It may not have been the easiest job but I love fabrication work so it was a lot of fun. I do plan on replacing my deck with composite when it is time. These should last me at least 5 years and by then the trailer will probably be do for a paint job. As much as I try to keep my stuff in good shape, it is still equipment and does get some wear and tear. Thanks for watching and the tip.
You may already have a comment for it, But I didn't see it in the comments. Maybe ad a small solar panel and charge controller in the tool box to keep the battery topped up when the trailer is just sitting outside. Defiantly like the idea of lighting up the forward part of the fenders in order to be able to see them from the rear view mirrors. Love your videos and your attention to detail.
Thanks for showing how you professionally customize a trailer, those were some useful additions. you always do real quality work and I enjoyed watching. Also thanks for showing how it looks at night, I was hoping were going to do that!
All the time I spent on the trailer, I have saved while using it already. I don't know how I ever used trailers without all the modifications. It makes life so easy in the long run. Thanks for watching.
the video did not show one and you did not mention if you ran a 12-volt power source to recharge the battery. if that trailer came with a 7-way RV plug it would be easy enough to do so. we do have something in common though, we both work alone. sometimes a helping hand is nice on the more larger heavier items but for the most part if somebody offers to help, they end up getting in the way. funny how you get used to working alone..
Yes, the 12 volt power from the truck recharges the battery. The volt meter in the trailer is an easy way to check and make sure it is working. I work odd hours so that doesn't help when you need assistance. You just get used to working alone.
Hey from Alaska. Put your battery in a water and dust proof box. The elements will make life hard when it come to the longevity of the battery. Road dirt , grime and water on the roadway ect. Yput your winch in protective box why not your battery.
Originally, they were on a switch. Since I found myself using them as reverse lights and they worked great, I connected them to the truck reverse lights. Now they come on when I back up or I can turn them on for loading. Thanks for watching.
You put a battery on your trailer, you can now delete the breakaway box and only run the switch (the one with the wire you hook to your truck) from positive to brake line of trailer. That's what I did since I have a winch too on my '08 Suretrac.
Really impressed with this set up. Attention to detail and i dont think there is such a thing as overboard. I am looking into adding a winch to my trailers even though they are not car haulers. Would like to throw an idea of using a Solar panel to keep up the trailer battery. The smaller 2.5 watt kits are pretty cheap. The switch panel was spot on in my opinion. Enjoyed watching this clip.
I did consider the solar charger, since it is always hooked to my truck it would be like a battery tender for both together. I don't know how I ever used my old trailer without theses modifications. I have easily saved more than the time invested in these mods since I have been using it. I may have a part 2 eventually: how I have the tool boxes set up, what I carry with me, some attachments I have for the trailer and maybe that solar panel. Thanks for watching!
Don't know where your at, but I always assemble electrical grounds/connections with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion from road salt. Always wear safety glasses when cutting metal. Last always aim your headlights at 25' from your garage doors. Those LED bulbs rotate to allow you to get the elements horizontal for your beam pattern. Otherwise you get a big blob of light, with no cutoff line, that just blinds oncoming traffic. That's a ticket in some states
I am getting ready to mount a winch on my 18` dovetail. I like the idea of putting it inside the box. I have one on my 20`, but it was plenty long enough to mount directly at the front of the bed. I don`t think I`ll have enough room on the 18` to do that. when I have a car on, I have to pull forward so far so the doors will clear the trailer fender, there is not enough room for a winch.
Some viewers are commenting on your 12V wire from your 7 blade plug to the trailer to keep your battery charged. I have a dump trailer that I also installed a small 50 watt solar panel on top of the tool box that holds my hydraulic pump and battery. It just ensures I have enough power to control the hydraulic pump and also enough power to control the 12 volt electric tongue jack.
I was thinking about the solar charger just to keep the batteries on both the trailer and truck charged when they sit for a couple weeks. The wire in the 7 pin plug keeps the trailer charged when I drive with it on the truck.
You covered up all those "important" safety stickers on the trailer, now how are you going to change a tire or air one uo without those things? Awesome trailer and a tip, LED headlights come in two types, with ballast and with remote ballast so for this application you use remote ballast and then you do not have the back end sticking out and have to make room for it, just locate the ballast somewhere close and hook up.
Add a solar trickle charger to the lid so the battery is always charged when you go to get the trailer.Simple flexible rubber flap over the top of the cable rollers to protect them and a couple drain holes in the box in case water does get in.
Nice job. I would consider putting that battery in a battery box of some kind water tight if possible you will find that pulling trailer in the rain or snow you mite find that it will short out the battery! As always enjoyed the video
Fuckin Awesome Scott!! Building a rack at the front for your battery/winch is the best way to go! And finding that perfect fit hitch box to put winch in was ingenious! Safe & secure, outta the elements. And best of all yer absolutely right, you get to use ALL of your deck space! Impressive!👌
The only thing I have seen not on that trailer that might be needed, is those tire covers might need to be 'drop down' types, in case you need to pull a car or truck that is locked up and going sideways up the trailer as you are pulling and pushing it. Other than that, excellent job. As for the welding, not bad. On some of those butt joints, you can grind a little off each end \ / so you end up with a V to weld INTO, instead of just a little seam that you practically grind off to paint or powdercoat (old werlders trick). Very nice job though, as always.
The fenders are removable. I actually had to take one off to get a truck off the trailer. It is easy, 2 bolts and a couple plugs. I have added some more stuff to the trailer in the year I have had it so I will be making a part 2 for this. Most of my cars come from the auction and they set them down on the trailer with an end loader. The winch is for the cars I pick up locally that do not run. I use this trailer like a tow truck. lol Thanks for watching.
Trailer looks good. When I did my trailer we used large tool box. The one that fits inside a truck bed, so that it’s not wide. I mounted spare tire under front of trailer so it’s not mounted open to be seen. It has a lock so can’t be stolen. My 10,000 lb wench we mounted in a cradle with a hitch. Welded bracket for mount that is bolted and can be removed. On top of storage in large toolbox the hitch has a tray for all your blocks and chocks. Ya it’s pretty sweet. 18’ dove I love it. My dad helped me make it what it is today. Could not of done it without him.
'Weld inspection..how did I do?'..... Aww man , you missed a bit !!......lol.. Nice job on the frame build.....Nothing like a good bit of over engineering ! Just like I'd do it.... Good to see you're still around.
Those little bits always get away! lol A little extra work at the beginning will save me from redoing the work later! I'm not going anywhere at least for a little while, I still have the how to videos I promised. After that, who knows. Thanks for watching!
Here's a tip, next time you drill into metal, use bacon grease as a cutting oil. Dip the tip of the drill bit in it. It works wonders and it's free. Be sure to pickup any shards from the floor if you have any pets around. Great Video...👍😀😎👌
Great trailer . I love the idea of putting the winch in the box . Really makes it look very proffessional great job scott . And no afternoon shift either lol . Those oxbeam lights are great i know a few guys who have them fitted to tractors and machinery . They say its like night and day the difference they found with them fitted . Ur vids are great hope u and family are well scott pls take care ... ian ....
So how hard is it to get the battery out when you need to replace it? Because you just know when it finally goes, it will fail when you're on the road somewhere!
Black tool/battery/equipment boxes will exceed 170°F in the sun on a still day. Light colors will go about 130°F in same conditions... like hot beach sand. So, if stuff inside is sensitive, paint chrome or put an aluminum shield over. [1/2 in gap... 12mm for foreigners] Like your work. Thanks. 👍🏼🤠
Love your setup. Just bought a 18ft dove tail trailer. I'm on the same thing flipping cars. Got 12000lbs winch from harbor freight. $288. I'm add lights under the trailer for reverse too.. I'm use a long light bar.
Question: I have a similar trailer. I intend to add a winch and was hoping to provide 12 volt power to the winch via my truck's trailer plug (it has a hot line for charging trailer batteries) and eliminate having to have another "trailer" battery. I haven't purchased a winch yet so I'm not aware of the amp requirements so am not certain whether or not this is a viable plan. Your thoughts and insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
Jim Garland don’t do it if you value your truck, that little wire can’t carry the amps you need to run the winch, it will melt and catch fire. You definitely need a battery.
Most winches will give you the amp draw at various tensions. All of which will be higher than what can run through the factory wiring on any truck. That factory wiring is meant to charge a battery, not power heavy load accessories. You need a battery.
Oh it was there. lol It was now the LF tire. I had a flat and had to get a new rim from a manufacturing defect. Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
Great Job as always Scott. I bought a set of AuxbeamThree Colors Switchback LED Fog Daytime Running Lights and they are junk for my SUV. On more then one occasion I start my SUV and 1 light is white and the other light is yellow. So I have to keep turning my fog lights off and back on to try and get them to be the same color. It is really a pain in the arse. I have tried contacting Auxbeam through Amazon messaging so I can get this warrantied but they keep ignoring me. Sorry but I can not recommend Auxbeam. Sorry Scott to bring this up on your YOU TUBE page but everyone has the right to know how companies treat their customers.
Did the new LED truck lights effect your radio reception? I tried them in my 2011 F150 and lost several of my normal radio channels. Do you know if there is a fix to this issue? Thank you.
Nice . 1st time that cable balls up on that winch . You'll be asking yourself why you put it in thay box and didn't just make a cover for it 😅 It also won't be long before you go to a synthetic cable 😊 Or shorten the cable to have more room on the spool .
@@vehcor I would copyright your design. I like your tool box and deck board color. I would put the battery in the tool box; because your battery costs a pretty penny.
@@matta3888 I tried, but the battery would not fit. I would have had to put the winch off to one side or the other. It is actually pretty hard to see under the toolbox and behind the frame rails and tires.
Figure your price and let me know. I would really like to get a similar setup, but was thinking of making something removable, but I really like your setup.
The constant power from the seven pin trailer connector is connected to it. When I am driving the truck, it is constantly charging the battery. Thanks for watching.
I went though about 30 different design mock ups before I settled on this one. It has been great and I am glad I went with it. Good luck on your fabrication! Thanks for watching.
amzn.to/2xAxHz3 Link is in the description for everything I used if there is something else that will help. Thanks for watching, good luck on your project
Very nicely done. I enjoyed watching. A few upgrades you should consider is Sterling Power Battery to Battery Charger that way your not having to worry about a down trailer battery. It chargers the trailer battery off the truck. Electronic brakes for the trailer and some running and turn leds wired and mounted on the fenders front side and rear to see the trailer alignment on the road also for others to see your trailer mainly when turning or lane change. Also more of a convenace but a backup camera on the end. :) Thanks for the videos. :)
Thanks! The trailer has a constant power lead from the truck in the trailer plug. It charges off of the alternator as I drive and the volt meter in the trailer is a way to make sure it is charging and charged at all times. The led maker lights are actually enough to light the lanes around it. I would like a back up camera though, I might have to look into that! Thanks for watching!
You should always wear a welding jacket, the rays from a mig/tig welder can severely burn your skin, take it from an old guy with many hours of welding ive been there and done that. The problems came out when you are older.
Mounted a winch on my 25' flat deck similler to what you did but didnt use the tool box. I built a hitch receiver and mounted winch on a hitch stock so i can take my hitch off and use it on front of my truck or the back also slides and pins right in to my hitch. used #4 welding cable with booster cable clamps to run to my truck battery 20'. Been pretty handy.
Glad to hear I am headed in the right direction. A new camera gave me the ability to make this video a little differently. I still had the time lapse camera running but this showed a little more detail and was a much shorter video after editing. Thanks for watching and the support!
Great Video. I just picked up a PJ C5 new also. I was looking for a great video to mount my new Warn winch and lights. You sir, did an excellent job. This directly applies to my trailer. Thanks!!!
Thanks, it was a very specific video but it seems to have reached its target audience. There are probably dozens of us. lol There are many ways to do it, I went through about 10 different designs before I decided this would be the best. There are links to the tool box, winch and switches I used as well as the lights if you are looking for them. I have already used my lights and winch a few times and I'm really glad I spent the time to install them, it will save hours in the future. Thanks for watching
Nice job. Welds look good. PJ makes a nice trailer. I have a 20' bed, dual power ram tilt back PJ (powers down as well as up) and love it. I added a winch as it came with a winch mount plate already installed. I recommend putting your battery in an enclosed battery box. Do the Auxbeam headlight housings have a cut off? Cheaper housing don't and if you run HID or LED bulbs they throw a lot of glare without the cut off. As a former OTR truck driver, I prefer to drive at might too put my old eyes don't work as well as they used to so lighting is important. My truck is newer so has good headlights but I still run a big LED bar as well as driving lights which are wired to my high beams so I can turn them off when encountering approaching traffic. Thumbed up and subscribed!
PJ makes the best trailer in my opinion, the quality is unmatched. The headlights allow you to rotate them and the beam is a wide flat pattern. Because the headlight from the truck is still the original made for halogen, it has some glare. I aimed the lights lower and it still provides more light than the halogen without blinding oncoming traffic. My old halogens were worse for blinding people and didn't provide as much light. Thanks for watching, glad to have you here.
Hi Vehcor... Nice Job! making the Brackets & Bolting them to the Trailer Frame. I do the same thing instead of welding. Nice Idea & size for the Tool Box Winch & switches. Remember to maintain the wood on your Deck by Pressure Washing & using a Wood Preserver every 2 years. You can also have the Undercarriage of your new Trailer Rust Proofed or Oil Sprayed to prevent rust. I too bought a new 2009 18' Kaufman Car Hauler with an upgrade Diamond Plated Deck & 15 " Tires with extra D Rings. I haul Vehicles here in Toronto too. Nice replacement Lights that I will be getting too. I replaced all the Lights on my Trailer with LED Lights & 2 Backup Floods. Thank you for taking the time to share your Ideas & Video. Grace
Welding would have been faster but I could not bring myself to grind up the brand new powder coat. I did end up wiring the lights under the deck to the back up lights on the truck since they were so useful for that purpose. I can still turn them on with the switch for loading as well. Stay safe on the roads up there and stay warm! Thanks for watching!
I own a 18 foot utility trailer, heavy duty with a pipe top rail. I added swivel trailer jacks on the back rear corners, on each side. I use a block of wood depending on the height needed to ground, and when I load a tractor or vehicle the swivel jacks carry the load of the vehicle or tractor when it loads down the back of the trailer and prevents the trailer from picking up the rear of my truck, or forcing the trailer down on the rear. Did this about 20 years ago, work perfect ever since. They swivel horizontal against the trailer when not in use, just pull the swivel pin and it drops and locks, or horizontal. Hope that helps, enjoy your channel. From the South Texas Border.
Nice job. I recommend you fabricate a weather tight seal in the fairlead opening so no moisture gets inside your winch box & corrode anything if it's parked outside or during road trips. I made my winch removeable by fabricating a male & female trailer hitch mount set-up on the A-frame of my tandem trailer so nobody can steal it or it gets stolen along with the trailer. I might make mine removable inside a box like you did though for those long hauls if it rains or snows I could just leave it mounted. Right now I'm about to fab up a removeable winch mount for my single axle trailer using a dual hitch extension type set-up. That way I can carry the winch on the back of my trailer to help offset the tongue weight during trips & just plug it into my trailer hitch along with the 7-way elec. cord when it's needed to pull something heavy up onto the trailer. I also recommend getting a wireless remote control for the winch so you can help guide & steer vehicles etc. onto the trailer when no one is around to help you. Add some wireless Bluetooth marine type speakers for some jams. Some wireless remote control switches for your trailer lights & accessories is a good option also you might want to consider. Have a great day & GOD Bless :-)
I think I might make that cover, it would be pretty easy. Water has not been a problem yet but it could be. The winch does have a wireless remote and I have yet to use the hand held. lol The radio might come in handy when I am putting suspensions on the vehicles to roll them off the trailer. lol Thanks for the ideas. I am planning on making a part 2 with all the other mods I have done in the year I have had it. Thanks for watching!
What size C chanel did you use? And where did you get the toolbox you put the winch in? I just bought a new PJ trailer yesterday and would love to do the same
There's nothing wrong with buying new but I'm going to build me a trailer from scratch even if it cost me 5 grand I want it built the way that I want it and it's going to be one of a kind and one-off like they say heavy duty
Yep, the G8 goes everywhere with me for the summer! I thought about sealing the bottom but I would not be able to do the sides of the boards without cutting up the trailer and removing them. Since I could not seal the sides, if the bottom was sealed, the moisture would be trapped in the boards and rot them faster..... at least this is my thinking. So it seemed better to leave the bottoms to "breathe". Years from now when I have to replace the boards, they will be sealed on every side. Thanks for watching!
Hi Scott just watched this episode as I am going through all your videos . Noticed all trailers in America have timber floors is that because of rust as in Australia they are all steel . Thanks great job as usual 👍👍👍✅✅
Wood decks are cheaper and you can nail blocks into them to chock loads. Not to mention they are easily replaced if damaged. Steel decks are available but less common. I did consider a steel deck but I would have had to order it and wait 16 weeks. This one was on the lot and ready to go and I’m impatient sometimes. 😂
I got a question, when you buy these action cars, how do you go about it? do you go threw a broker or friend with a dealers licence?? I would like to see a video on purchasing a car from start to finish, from selecting, do picking it up.
I buy through the shop I rent. They have a rebuilder license. I will have tutorials that show al of that stuff eventually when I am done with the Silverado. Thanks for watching.
If you are putting a lot of miles on that trailer, go for a TPMS. Spares ar nice for AFTER the blow out, preventing blowouts from low pressure is much better! You can have one tire low at night and not feel it for 300 miles until it blows, by then the other one is overheated and weakened and will blow out the next day... If you find yourself in tight situations at night, add some 'turning lights' just ahead of your trailer axles, LEDs aimed to light up the area ahead and around your trailer tires so you can see what's back there, activate them with a wireless remote control on your dash. Back-up lights on the tail end as well, but those should be very bright and run off your winch battery with a relay, and 2 remote control switches. One on dash for normal use and tailgaters, the other either on your keychain or in toolbox. Wired to winch battery in case you need light before truck is hooked up. Mount a small LED work light on the front of the tool box with it's own local switch, wired to winch battery, aimed at hitch for hitching up at night. 12V hitch jack. Weld on some RV stabilizer Jack's to the tail end corners, tucked up where they will not drag, then you can unload without the truck if you need to.
I was planning on the tpms as that is the reason for 99% of blow outs. Thanks for the tips and it does have removable stabilizer jacks in the rear, I just had them off at the time. Thanks for watching.
Thanks, the reverse lights I thought of afterwards. They were so useful that I needed to hook them up so I didn't have to get out of the truck to turn them on. Thanks for watching.
good luck with them welds very poor .. cold lap low un even penetration . can tell your a learner . hope you get no big heavy loads or they will snap ... welds to cold ,, plenty of paint on them will give you more strength .. nice try anyway nice trailer
to hell with ramps! i bought a new 20ft tilt bed road warrior last year and its been glorious ever since! and i added a 17,500 smittybilt winch to the front because no kill like overkill!
I only use the ramps about 30% of the time. End loaders load and unload. A tilt bed costs more and is heavier. So I could not pull the same weight as this unless I moved up to a 14K trailer. Then the cost to pull and plate it also increases. So, I would be paying more money for a trailer at purchase and the life of the trailer that I only use as intended 30% of the time. This is the trailer that made the most sense financially and I have no regrets. I can also load cars backwards if I have too. Which can sometimes be a problem with tilt beds if they are gravity tilt.
It has been great. I added a few more upgrades so I will probably do another video on it. Best trailer I have had yet. I did have a wheel that split and PJ sent me a new one right away.
I wish I could post a picture on here. I built a winch mount on my PJ trailer that bolts on. I also didn’t want to mess up my powder coat. I have my winch on a receiver mount so I can use it without the trailer. The mount I built allows it to mount on the trailer the same way and the wiring is all run off the truck. I can remove it to keep it out of the weather.
I did have a few designs before I settled on this one and a few I was able to remove the winch. I have enough stuff to store without worrying about adding to it so I decided a permanent mount was the best for me. Thanks for watching.
Dude. You're a badass. This is coming from a mid-50's car guy who's been wrenching part time since the late 70's and owns a car stereo shop. Dood. Thank you for the details on your builds, and humor. You've got some serious skills and an ideal approach.
Thanks, I have also been wrenching since the late 70s but I was only 3 then and my work was not the best. lol But I had the fastest pedal car in the neighborhood! I'm glad you enjoy the builds. Thanks for the support!
welds are fine, but keep your face away from it when you are welding... there is a reason commercial welders wear respirators... them fumes are not good for you :D
