Glad that we have a 4runner SR5 and the salesman from Toyota told me damned you bought a 4runner, it’s going to take a while when you come again to buy a new truck because what you have right now will lasts for many years and I am not just talking about 10years ^_^. It will go beyond that...

I drive a 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with a 5 speed manual transmission, and I love it. Very reliable with over 205k miles on it. Good as a daily driver and very good in snow and other conditions, as well as off-roading almost anywhere you would like to.

4runners are built to last 10+ years....Land Cruisers are built to last 25 years...If you CAN afford, the LC is the best built, best per dollar, best horsepower per pound of weight of the two...However, this is like arguing one bottle of Pappy's vs 2 bottles...They are the two most durable off roaders available in the US today...Give me either one and I'm good to go.
@Sirgromulus
@Sirgromulus 6 лет назад
I love my 2004 V8 4 Runner which has proved to be the most durable and reliable vehicle I have owned in my 60 years. The vehicle is a great compromise between a hard core off--road vehicle and a daily driver. I am in the market for a new SUV and have been somewhat disappointed in how long it takes Toyota to bring new generations (of all their vehicles) to market as of late. With the advent of new electronic safety technologies, multi-speed (and CVT, although not for the 4Runner!) transmissions, and other improvements - Toyota should not be waiting ten years between generations. I know they like to play it safe to maintain their (almost) bullet-proof reliability but they need to step up their development timelines in this day and age. Just my 2c.
@ohenry4834
@ohenry4834 6 лет назад
Hell no CVT for me for a 4runner, it’s not designed for towing heavy equipment, It’s a suicide to make a towing truck with a CVT transmission, belt can’t handle pulling heavy objects. So you might wonder now that those who have big improvements from toyota are the smaller SUV and cars, because of this reasons CVT is only good for smaller vehicle and only limited to that category. If 4runner has CVT and I am pulling heavy objects then hell yeah bye bye 4runner for me!!! So it’s a misconception that Toyota is not doing anything, It’s just that theres has been no technologies out there that can be better than the one that they have right now. It’s as simple as that!!!

its a 5-speed because toyota wants to build a more reliable and durable transmission than doing the 6-10 speed transmission which is a complex transmission where things will go wrong during offroading. look at jeeps, they r crap now with their bad transmission

Thanks Roman for this video of the 2019 4Runner TRD Pro. Seems the only 2 changes or options from last year to now are the sun roof that many have requested be available for it and the roof rack. Nice options. But I am glad I did not wait another 6 months to see if the 2019 was better in transmission updating. (Since they did nothing to enhance that)I have no complaints about my 2018 TRD Off Road. I have owned and driven a slew of 4x4 vehicles. All with the standard 4x4 systems. From standard heights to after market lift kits. Old school driving abilities equipped with the right tires, you can get to a lot of places. With that being said, this technology on these rigs makes me feel like I am in a tank!. (unstoppable) Which reality is, ultimately even a tank can get high centered and be left needing a winch or recovery vehicle. But for a civilian vehicle, this thing makes me feel unstoppable. I have done the sands, the hills, the variable terrain obstacles and this thing just deals it all out like one is on paved roads. Incredible. What is extra nice is the ride quality while doing it. As many reviewers have reported, you can go all day long in this thing and not get beat up doing very technical stuff. Long road hauls to get to your destination and technical work when you get there, this thing fits the bill. Toyota, IF there was 1 major thing I might request, it is like many others, update your transmission. It is bullet proof. But I know you can enhance it to include a couple more gears. However, since this rig is so solid, I won't be making a change for about 10 years or so I suspect. So you got some time to make the improvement in that area. New buyers would appreciate it though. :) Oh and 1 more thing, a front bumper camera would be an ideal option. Some of us do not have spotters handy when we crest hills or even just park up close and personal to things. Would be nice to see what is directly in front of you when creeping up to it. And that's my nickels worth of comments. Peace out.

Love the 4Runner TRD Pro! I know someone will probably leave an angry comment on this, but for the price point it needs updated to this decade. Many people trashed the JL about how luxurious it is and that it took away but people seem to be extremely pleased with it when the get it in and experience it. I think the same would happen with the 4Runner

my 5th gen was fantastic stock. As soon as you go into wanting larger tires for ground clearance, that's where the Wrangler pulls ahead. To get fully articulating 33's on the 4R requires a good bit. My JL, just put them on. Want 35? Oh just do a 2-2.5" lift, good to go. Want 35" on the 4R? Good luck. Loved my 4R but fell in love with how at home the Wrangler is with being modified and used offroad. It's just so easy. I used to hate on Jeeps being a lifelong Toyota owner. I had problems with both and just ENJOY my Jeep more.

I recently picked up a 2018 4runner trd off-road and I love it. My dealer told me there was a $9000 markup on the trd pro so in my opinion I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze for the pro. I think that I could outfit my off road with all the kit that makes the pro a pro probably for less than that markup. I mean come on that roof rack is a joke, snorkel is not necessary and I don't need pro badging. I'd rather put on the tires I want, the suspension that I prefer and armor up based on my level of off roading as well as a more functional roof rack. Just my thoughts but I'm still a fan of the pro I just think it's overpriced for what it is.

You can actually make a TRD Off Road BETTER than the Pro for less money, and still be able to have everything the Pro offers AND a sunroof (that you can't get with the Pro. The Pro is nice, but is overpriced and overrated in my humble opinion.
@jupiter22177
@jupiter22177 5 лет назад
Totally agree, the pro is an incredible, shameful rip off. Pure sucker trim.
@andyham6094
@andyham6094 5 лет назад
I agree you can do the pro with the off road plus more and make it much more capable with better bigger tires and other stuff but even though the pro is expensive, it’s good for people who just don’t wanna deal with those aftermarket upgrades and just have an off road ready machine straight out of the lot. People who don’t know much about what to get but still enjoy off roading and have the money to buy a pro it’s definitly a plus. I mean they are hard to get and marked up a lot because they are in high demand since Toyota doesn’t make tons of them compared to other trim levels. I still dig the pro and think it’s by far the best looking 4runner out of the dealership. Every time I see a pro on the road I smile and love looking at them even though I have a modded sr5. The only thing mine doesn’t have is the crawl control and multi terrain select and lockers but i have upgraded icon suspension, bfg KO2 285-70-17, 3 inch lift.

My 2009 jeep has the 3.7l v6 and I have 467k on it. Only thing that went bad so far is the expensive as he'll ac condenser and the AC evaporator is leaking. Oh and I have all origional parts from the factory...only thing I had to replace was water pump...damn pulley was wobbling lol. Other than the water pump and AC condenser+ evap nothing is changed. Everything important works. No check engine lights. Not even a drop of oil leaking. Maybe I just got lucky? But I drive it through rivers, flood waters, mud, rocks, jumped the Damn thing. Towed 10000lb loaded trailer over 70 acres of uneven dirt roads when my kubota broke down...i love my nellybell 4ever and always. But the this 4runner is nice too 😁

Supercharger means turbocharge? Nope not for me, remember toyota engine was known for it’s reliability for one reason NO TURBO! Turbo means off the chart temp thereby compromises the life of every parts of the engine resulted to short life, and unreliable performances, just look at those turbo charge brand you can expect them to have a reliablity Period of 10 years but Toyota can easily pass over that period. Some may last up to 20 years without overhauling...

touge410 _ yeah can’t go wrong with the fj either. Same engine same platform basically same capability. It comes down to the space. I wanted a real 4 door that has a lot of cargo room for my drums being in a full time band but also be my daily driver as well as an off road machine that can take me anymore so the 4Runner is the perfect truck for me but it was down to the fj or 4Runner but the Fj didn’t have enough room and it’s a true 4door but I love both vehicles so much along with the Tacoma and tundra trd pros. I would LOVEEEEE to see Toyota bring back a new updated fj and make a trd Pro fj. That would be sickkkk

I like the 4Runner the most. And honestly, it is the only Toyota I like, much less would consider buying. However, Toyota really needs to update this thing. That 4.0L V6 and 5 speed auto are ancient. My 04' ranger has that same type of setup. Plus Toyota needs to update the interior. Oh, and they need to get with it and put in a new infotainment system. That thing they have in there is ancient. But the bones of the 4Runner are great. One of the last real body on frame SUV's in a nice size, that isn't Suburban/Expedition stupid size.
@AZBADBOYz
@AZBADBOYz 6 лет назад
Why change anything when it works flawlessly. Look at the Tacoma, they did what people wanted and the tranny is horrible and the motor sucks. The 4.0L has great down low torque, more gears do not benefit that fact and only add more moving parts, AKA shit to break. People that want all the electrical shit found on your typical German sedan should go buy something else. If you want something that's more basic and won't fall apart in 5 years, buy a 4Runner. My biggest complaint with my 18' TRD Off-Road is the gas peddle to throttle body manipulation. People should not have to buy a Peddle Commander to resolve this computer manipulation in the name of economy. Do that has only made the nearly 300hp feel more like 200.
@trentonrivard1400
@trentonrivard1400 6 лет назад
If you want a fancy SUV with a different engine and transmission then dont get a 4 runner. It's perfect as it is. It's basic for a reason. Get a Landcruiser or a Lexus if you want something fancy.
@AZBADBOYz
@AZBADBOYz 6 лет назад
More efficient engine? You have some alien tech that we don't know about yet or you the guy that wants a Prius motor in his Tundra? Naturally aspirated cars have gained very little in mileage efficiency since port fuel injection became a thing. The only thing that's going to make leaps and bounds change is massive weight cut, much like Ford is doing with aluminum bodies and Chevy has done with the Vette. Embracing new technology that cuts weight in half and increases safety will be the biggest evolution outside of full on electric. I fully expect parts for all moving machines to be made from some type of carbon supermaterial like carbyne or graphene. Until then, can we just agree that Toyota needs to put a turbo on both the truck and 4R and we can be happy?
@AZBADBOYz
@AZBADBOYz 6 лет назад
You are so off it's comical on everything. More HP equals more fuel economy, really? Same fuel economy and more horsepower is efficiency but I thought the argument was better tech for more MPG. More horsepower isn't going to push a brick through the air that weights 4700 lbs with any kind of "efficiency." If that was the case, the 6 second quarter mile cars running Hot Rod Drag Week with more than 3000 HP would be getting what, 100-200 MPG there smart guy?
@aaronluis11
@aaronluis11 5 лет назад
the 4.0 is a much more reliable engine compared to the 3.5. They do need to get rid of the fan clutch. I do agree on the transmission, thou.
@aky19832001
@aky19832001 5 лет назад
Now isn't this better than the bolt on jeep you continue to dump money on just to keep it working properly and running. Plus you get a beautiful safe interior. Not one panel fell apart or bent out of shape. There's a reason why I won two 4runners. Cause they work and do so relentlessly. The 5 speed is is great. Higher gear transmission on a SUV makes it feel like its constantly struggling to find the gear, constantly shifting

@@sunnyvalejedi Traditionally there is a big difference between the two though in NA the lines have blurred. Overlanders in the rest of the world spend weeks if not months traveling and living out of their rigs and religiously avoid camp grounds and popular tourist locations or roads for that matter.

@@overlandinusa1517 Sure, although if we put a GPS on most rigs I'll bet 95% of 'overlanders' are never further than 20kms from pavement. Like most, I think there's a romantic notion of off-grid travel that rarely accomplished in reality.

I really wanna see someone make a video comparing a 4.7 v8 T4R and SC'd 4.0 v6 T4R. (Both should be 4th gens and the v8 should be vvti) I wanna see see which is better on the highway, towing, city driving and of course various off road conditions and obstacles. Compare HP, TQ, MPG, weight, cost etc And a drag race for funzies! :)

I hope toyota will never change whats under the hood. A little interior update would be nice. But dont put too much sensors. Or add a diesel turbo or a v8. WOuld be nice as well. Im about to get this badboy come 2020

I'd imagine they'd just use the 3.5 V6 and 6 speed auto from the Taco. That was new for '16, so that's probably as advanced as Toyota is going to get on the 4 Runner. Something like Jeep's new 2.0L Turbo 4cyl would be interesting.

sir_Xenon exactly last thing Toyota wants is to alienate there extremely loyal 4Runner customers. Given with the issues Tacoma is having with that 3.5L V6 right now there being extremely cautious about updating powertrains especially how proven and solid the 4.0 is

The Troop Carrier HZJ75RV that I drove in Africa was diesel and 5sp manual. It was rudimentary but it had A/C and a cassette stereo and went everywhere and back. Those and the diesel hilux are what will be fixable by the “guy in Chile” not any of these pimped out rigs sold nowhere but here. We had one of the “hilux land cruisers” in the fleet and by far it was the least capable or fun to drive.

The rav4 adventure over the 4Runner, Tacoma, or tundra because of it’s technology and fuel economy of eco mode to save fuel on a road trip unlike any other, and interior design, and the gauge cluster display because it tells you when you’re loosing traction and how much torque is being in the wheels and wheel spin, and it’s much easier to read in the adventure like mud and sand, rock and dirt unlike the 4Runner or Tacoma or tundra,

The unibody holds the same concern for me as the IFS---when we see a unibody that can handle the off road the same as a ladder frame (when IFS is as good as a solid axle), then we can have the worthy debate over which to purchase. And no, arguing that you CAN have the same ability for MUCH more money is NOT a valid debate.

It’s too bad GM decided to make the new Blazer a crossover and not a body on frame SUV - would have provided the opportunity for a Blazer ZR2 to compete with the 4-Runner TRD Pro. IMHO - if you’re looking for an overlanding SUV this is the ONLY choice. Land Rover is too unreliable (in the past) versus Toyota. The “Big 3” don’t make anything comparable. Jeep is nice but the Wrangler is not comfortable enough as a daily driver (and the Cherokee isn’t body on frame anymore). Missed opportunity GM.

The Pro has upgraded shocks. For our use we went with the TRD Offroad with Kdss. The features of the Pro would be rarely used. The Kdss we use daily. Sunroofs does eliminate 2 - 3 inches of headroom. The 5spd transmission is very reliable. Will be sad when it goes away. People want a new super speed transmission with blah blah blah electronic ice cream server and 40mpg engine. You don't. TFL raced an old Tacoma vs New engine Tacoma. It was a draw.

Front lockers in stock ifs trucks like to snap axles in half. You gotta have a rear locker and good tires and instincts. I'm thinking about this 4runner. Might be worth it if I don't have to sit on the floor like in the Tacoma.
