Motorcyclist magazine goes for a test ride aboard Triumph’s all-new 2019 Scrambler 1200 XC and XE motorcycles. This duo of English made machinery harkens back to the old days of motorcycling, where one bike would do it all. We test ride it on, and off-road, during the official Triumph Motorcycles press launch in southern Portugal. Tune in to see if this classic British marque finally has something that can compete with the best of the best in the scrambling, and perhaps adventure-touring segments.
--
Back in the day, when rules were few, tough guys with an itch for excitement blitzed across California deserts aboard their custom British-made scramblers. Whether it was for work (racing) or play, it was during this era that the Scrambler segment was born.
Fifty years later, the category continues to grow in popularity with no fewer than four manufacturers offering production machines off the showroom floor. After playing second fiddle to its nemesis, Ducati’s aptly named Desert Sled, Triumph aims to retake the class with a pair of off-road-capable but still street-legal bikes in its Scrambler 1200 XC ($14,000) and XE ($15,400). Following a quick tease in the First Look article, we were among the first group of journalists to test ride it during the official press introduction held off Portugal’s rugged Algarve coast.
When you look at the history of Triumph Motorcycles, the Scrambler was the original do-it-all, on-/off-roader. It was the type of bike that Steve McQueen and Bud Ekins ripped the Nevada and California deserts aboard during the ’60s. They’d race, crack open cold ones, and tell everyone about their exploits afterward. Fast-forward to 2019, and these two bikes employ the type of hardware that would make McQueen and company Brooklands green with envy.
Both the Scrambler 1200 XC and XE are Triumph’s vision of all-around, dual-purpose scrambling fun. They are road-legal motorcycles that are just as happy when ridden on the street as when throwing roost on the dirt-it’s that versatile. We began our riding adventure on the dirt, where it proves to have some serious chops.
Equipped with a real dirt bike-sized 21-inch spoked front wheel, big-displacement liquid-cooled 1,200cc parallel-twin engine, and thick, long-travel suspension, these motorcycles hold their own off road. It jumps, slides, digs into ruts, and can tackle treacherous terrain better than a 500-pound streetbike should. Still, both Scramblers are far from dedicated dirt bikes, sporting top-notch road equipment too, including LED lighting, keyless start, and a pair of superbike-spec M50 Brembo calipers hanging off the front hoop. It makes the rotors look tinier than its sporty 320mm diameter measurement implies.
Of course both Scramblers come with all the electronic bells and whistles: ABS, traction control, multiple engine power modes, cruise control, heated grips (standard on the XE but an option on the XC)… You name it, this Triumph has it.
Keeping tabs on it is a beautiful round-faced full-color TFT display, that also integrates GoPro control and Google Maps functionality. Both of these features are in the beta software development phase and weren’t ready for us try. We did note the crisp, clear font of the instrumentation and how easy it is to decipher while riding.
Both electronic and trip settings are manipulated via logically placed switch gear on the handlebar. The ability to switch between “themes” was also neat, with an more analog-style option available if the standard display is too modern for you. The tactile function and overall quality of the controls is top-notch too.
Each come with a pair of Öhlins shocks, but for an extra $1,400, the XE model (stands for “extreme”) gets more heavy-duty suspension (47mm-diameter fork versus 45mm on the XC) with 9.8 inches of travel front and rear versus the XC’s 7.9 inches. The suspension lifts the motorcycle, giving it a taller stance, with seat height climbing over an inch to 34.25 inches. An inch-longer swingarm further enhances grip and the ability to climb steep terrain. The electronics package adds an IMU giving it greater positional awareness. This allows the traction control electronics to account for lean angle-odd, considering the XE’s more off-road focus. Hand guards are also standard-a welcome feature for riding in the rain or cold.

This was a great review Adam! I love how much enthusiasm and your own personality you threw into it. I agree with other comments in a few things though, hopefully decrease the constant rock music, and showcase more raw audio from bike performance. I also really really would love a little clearer audio from Adam, it seems his mic might be stuck within his shirt collar or jacket somewhere deep, and it muffles his voice a lot. I hope you, Adam, get to do tons more in-depth reviews! Great work overall MCM!

The thing with these official press events is that they never put forward any real critisisms of the bike. Everything is super amazing on it. How are we meant to make informed choices if you don't get the full picture. Just another marketing opportunity. I rode the previous scrambler (only off road mind you) and the exhaust just got in the way of your leg - it really needed wide pegs. And I'm not Triumph bashing (I own a Tiger 800 XC), all of the manufacturers do it.

You need to check out some British reviewers they tend to be more honest. Rev zilla also does some good reviews. But I know what you're saying.
@philwomack6841
@philwomack6841 5 лет назад
The obvious answer to that is get yourself down to the dealership, slap your ass on the bike and draw your own conclusions. Being realistic do any of the major manufacturers produce bad bikes anymore? In my opinion bikes within each niche are just different flavours of the same concept and it's just a case of which flavour you like best. Reviewers on a press launch have a really hard time, upset the manufacturer and you probably won't be invited again. I'm sure the marketing people will pay close attention to the reviews done for other manufacturers launches too. Get the balance wrong and there goes your income stream.

I echo Daniel Thompson - check out Bike World: they give warts-and-all reviews. As a gross generalisation, most Americans tend to prefer gushing positivity over critical objectivity.

@@philwomack6841 Car reviewers often give lackluster reviews and get asked to come back and besides thst a review gives the positives and negatives about what is being reviewed. I understand what you are saying about there not being bad bikes per se, but there are uncomfortable seats, spongy brakes, bad suspension, bad gauges, etc. These all can be pointed out. And I agree, I rode the old scrambler and it was ridiculously uncomfortable with the pipes, almost as if no one had ridden it in testing. This is coming from a daytona 675 and Bonneville owner.

I read and viewed just about all reviews about the Scrambler 1200 XE (including non-english sources). And aside from the looks that not all are a fan of, it's pretty unanimous that its a fantastic machine. I had a 2015 Scrambler and I upgrades the brakes, suspensions, etc, etc, etc....This thing has more than twice the suspension travel, twice the brakes, more engine (engine based on previous models that has had good reviews as well), cruise control, heated grips, customizable dash, USB plug, higher handlebars, lower maintenance (32000km valve check instead of 20-24000km), oil changes are also further appart (I think its like 15000km), tubeless spoked wheels, smooth injection, riding modes, offroad traction control, leaning ABS, for about the same weight. I mean aside from stating the obvious (no wind protection, its a naked) and no cup holder, what could be so bad about it? :)

@carlosdanger2586 5 лет назад
Here are the cons. Too heavy to ride off road. Too expensive to ride off road. Suspension is too soft to ride off road. It would probably be okay to ride in the desert on a dirt road but you would never want to take one of them things in the mud. At these press briefings nobody ever says anything bad about what they're riding. If they did they wouldn't invite them back.

@@carlosdanger2586 nearly 10" of adjustable suspensions...your good to say they are too soft without trying or adjusting the suspensions :) Its not a dirt bike, so yes heavy. I got to do an off-road demo day at my local dealer, they took us to some property of a friend and let us rip around on some berms and gravel fields, with some dirt and grass areas. There I got to see a 45ish mph crash where it flipped and slid on the dirt/rock for a good ways. I'm pretty sure it's totaled since it broke the steering stop off the one side of the frame, which also allowed the triple tree to smash the $2400 tank. The tft display was broken off and smashed dangling from wires, headlight broken but mostly in tact. The most forward exhaust shield broke off. The side engine case was only lightly scratched up along with the rear exhaust heat shield.

Triumph doesn't make bikes that are cheap anymore. At least not DR650 or KLR650 cheap. Not even Tenere XT660Z priced for that matter. You've got to pay for that "Modern Classic" retro styling with modern performance and features. I guess there's always the Royal Enfield Himalayan, with retro performance to go with the styling.

1 fail. The naming convention. Can't tell in the video if he's referring to the XC or XE. They should have used Tiger convention and stuck to XR vs XC. 2. What's the weight on these things? 3. Is there a short bar option? In 3rd world countries, wide bars really hamper motion in traffic. But I guess no one has that in mind if developed countries.

I actively listened for any negative things stated in the video. The most negative thing I heard was that the throttle in one of the modes was too sensitive. Is this bike that good? Hell no, every bike has it's limitations and compromises. I understand that it's great to be flown somewhere at Triumph's expense to learn about the bike and I don't really have a problem with that in itself. The problem is when you fool yourself into thinking that you're providing any information which couldn't be found on a spec sheet or a press release. Because in this video, you didn't. Ever wonder why commute videos are about as popular as videos with slick b-roll at a picturesque location? It's because commuting videos are in the real world. The same real world where riders plop down a ton of their own hard-earned money to buy a bike largely decided via info in reviews. Call me a troll if you want but I was disappointed by this video.

@@Land-Shark I get that but ask yourself what's the point of a 'First Ride' video? It's cool if average Joe enthusiast makes a video about his new bike because he's excited about his new purchase. If I was a jerk I would say that 'First Ride' videos require less effort to put in but that clearly isn't the case. It's just that the effort was put into cool camera-work rather than evaluating the bike. Because they had a limited time with the bike, it's only fair to keep things positive. But the only people who benefit from that situation are Triumph and fanboys who don't want their hype to be rained on. And so Triumph gains tons of free marketing. Which is exactly what Triumph's primary reason for doing all this. These events are structured precisely to minimize potential for media to report flaws with the bike.

This isn't really to be informative. Everyone races to get their content out first because that's the one that gets the most views and ad sales. Only an idiot buys something off one early first ride at a press junket.

Is a big inflatable puppet of Steve McQueen included in the price?

I would like a 650cc bike with the same looks but no electronics basic 650 scrambler keep the weight under 400 instead over 500 and the price under 10000 instead of $20000

Mine arrives in March but if I hear one more Steve McQueen reference I'm gonna puke. Quit beating that literal dead horse Triumph...

I’d rather have a 1090 adv R, Africa twin, 790 adv R, DR650, 690, WR250R...🤷🏻‍♂️ Who and what is this bike for? 🧐🤔 hipsters with gravel driveways? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Probably. Certainly with whats available in the UK. Would have to add the CCM to the mix though.

Tubeless, finally! Too bad all the dealers are dropping the brand because of expensive demands for exclusive floorspace and mandatory clothing and accessory displays. I used to have 2 dealers within a 100 miles, now I have none. As usual British manufacturers shoot themselves squarely in the foot.
