For 2024 Triumph have updated their well loved Scrambler 1200 models. The outgoing 1200XC model is replaced by the 1200X, and the 1200XE carries on. Both bikes receive updated engines, dashboards, suspension, exhaust, and more. Let's see how they perform. The new X model is basically a street scrambler 1200, and is now very different than the off-road oriented XE model. #triumph #scrambler #triumphscrambler #adv #advrider #motorcycle

As a ‘22 XE owner I am biased. However I do think this bike should get more credit for its off road chops. It goes to show that you can’t ride a spec sheet and the XE especially is more than the sum of its parts. The power is more usable and effective in most situations that the majority of new-school ADV’s and the XE suspension, when adjusted for you, is pretty special. If you’re a bit of an old soul or a purist, then you’ve got to throw a leg over this bike and give it a shot. It’s sexy and addictive!!

I recently purchased a used 1200 XE. I also have a Kove 450 Rally and have owned a Tuareg 660 and various dual sports. I love the Triumph for purely emotional reasons - it brings me back to the 70's when I started riding motorcycles, but without the poor electronics and questionable build quality. It was not a rational purchase. I love that bike. The previous owner installed a low-slung exhaust so I can stand easily and not cook my leg. The ecu was remapped and everything that could be pulled from the bike to lighten it up was put in a bin for the next owner. I might investigate getting rid of the keyless ignition.

The 22-23 XC is the one to get, Ohlins shocks, Showa forks, Brembo brakes, cruise control, no heat issues with the cat, lower seat than the XE, which relates to lower centre of gravity off road, and for the realistic kind of riding 99% of riders will do, the XC is more than capable. I’ve owned both XE and XC, and the XC is the one I prefer, and the one in my garage. Let’s get serious, who is going to go enduro racer mode in remote areas, on your own, with a 200 kg plus motorcycle loaded up with luggage. If you really want to have fun in the dirt, buy a 110 kg enduro bike, anything else is a compromise.

Me. I do that regularly. XE all the way. For me at least. That being said, despite being the best bike I can think of in terms of looks, ridability, power (for what it is), versatility and just the overall package, I’m sick of having to deal with continuous warranty claims…so…probably going to sell. Hello Africa Twin.

This is great information to see such a clear comparison of the two Triumph scramblers. As a more road-biased rider, the X model speaks to me more and the smaller 900 street scrambler is tempting. With so many choices of off-road-capable machines, these days, the main reason I would consider a Triumph is for the legend and the quality. I'd like a drive shaft, but that Triumph 1200 Rally model is so top-heavy that I'll wait for your evaluation of the new BMW GS 1300!

Really disappointed that no reviewer is digging deep and letting the viewers know triumph pulled the okie doke. Kinda did the reverse apple iPhone realize. The best iPhone ever!!. Well the best scrambler ever was the last years model. Especially the x. Yes lower suspension for accessibility but why lose the dash, better brakes, adjustable suspension, fork size? travel, and cruise control but the bike is only 1100 less. Even the front and rear higher on the X are now plastic instead of aluminum. Weird that triumph gave us a lot less bike for a lil less money. Even the xe loses out on the ohlins and showa suspension for marzochi which is a lesser suspension most would agree. Fork size drops from 47 to 45 mm also. Does include better brakes but upgrades suspension alone on bike is an up charge of at least 1500-3k. But they dropped the price 900 only.

There are lots of short term reviews in the India market but no long term reviews in the US market which is important to us here as we tend to ride differently so reliability may also vary. But I do agree that it is quite overrated and already has known issues.

Great video! I think the X is categorically worse then then XC though. The XC has/had cruise control, Ohlns suspension and brakes, ect... Only thing it lacked is the corning abs but not sure who would take that over the other features. I understand the inch shorter is nice but I'm pretty short myself and the XC is not bad at all.

I also noticed that on the new 1200X the rear pillion pegs attachment brackets are not removable, they are permanently welded on the frame, in case of a fall and bent one, which is possible you basically damaged part of the frame. It may be not a huge deal breaker for many but to me it a step back from the previous model, Even the 900 has them removable.

I purchased a left over 2019 XE with all the options on, including the heated grips. It was a fantastic bike to me, first time having CC and heated grips, gorgeous to look at, perfect all around on Michigan roads, asphalt with huge potholes or gravel. Took it on trips to the U.P. and rode her all the way to Sturgis and back. Seat height, exhaust heat and no wind protection never stopped me or bothered me much. I sold it to get more luggage carrying capacity. I owned a first gen KLR with Tusk panniers on, bought used and wanted another super KLR. The T7 was the logical choice, but no CC, the next option was the Aprilia Tuareg and my friend brainwashed me into a base 1100 Honda AT. No regrets at all, he bought my XE, wish he would ride it more. I get to see it often, and I'll buy another one in a heartbeat, but only with CC and heated grips. Excellent video and review Ian, like other have said it before, the added value you get on the XE over the XC/X is a no brainer.

Thanks for another informative episode of the new Triumph Scramblers. I’ve chosen the XE, and should take delivery in about a month from now, late Feb. 2024. The Triumph dealership here in Dallas did not have an XE in stock to test ride, or to test out the seat height. I’m hoping that my 32” inseam will be enough to accommodate the XE. I was able to test ride the X model, and boy, what a blast it was. That engine is phenomenal. Happy Trails

Nice review thanks! Curious to try the new XE, I had one of the first ones that came out and absolutely hated the suspensions (its the only bike that gave me back pain (until then and ever since), I sold an Africa Twin to buy the 1200XE and sold it within 3 months to buy another Africa Twin, its the shortest time I've kept any bike in my life). I had the suspensions adjusted by 2-3 shops, then had it resprung, revalved, which helped but not enough to make me want to keep it. My 2015 Scrambler 900 was 10 times as comfortable. I loved the engine, the looks, the legroom, the tubeless wheels, the sound, but man o man I still don't know if it was just the first batches that had horrendous suspensions as I've heard some saying it was the best they've ever had (clearly their bike wasn't like mine), at the time I called Triumph's customer service regarding a speed sensor that was BO, and while I had him on the phone I asked if they were getting complaints about the XE's suspensions and he was quite transparent that they had indeed received quite a few complaints for the XE (on the first year model), while journalists were praising how amazing the suspensions were...The bike I bought (new), was 10 times harsher than my Ducati Monster 1100 EVO and I'd say it wasn't even more comfortable than my friends BMW S1000RR HP4...happy to see Triumph got rid of the Ohlins, at least the ones I had, were hands down the worst I've experienced on any bike (and I've tried probably over 150 bikes by now).

Heated grips should be on every bike above $5000. It costs the manufacturer what $20-50 at most? Yet it costs the consumer $200-300 plus a few hours labor. Vast majority of motorcycle sales markets would use heated grips more than half the year.

Nice review. Since Triumph lent me a Scrambler XE for 24 hours, I fell in love with it. However, I'm aware that the exhaust heat can be a major issue for me and my passenger. I then tried the Honda Transalp, which is a good bike overall but doesn't make you smile as much as the Scrambler. Finally, I tried the GS1300, and it's a beast! It has everything you could ask for. Whatever, I prefer the body position on the Scrambler. I felt my neck and shoulders were more relaxed, which sounds strange, but it's true! 😅 Are there any bikes with the same quality as the Xe and the GS?

Glad that I bought / have a 2022 XC, as compared to the de-contented new model X. Still scratching my head as to why Triumph did this. Lower price, yes. But losing the fully adjustable Showa and Ohlins suspension, the Brembo M50 brakes, cruise and keyless ignition far outweighs the $1,000 savings. Adds to their profit margin is my guess. Unit Garage makes an attractive and effective windscreen for these models The offroad riding you did on this video was awesome, and truly revealed a lot of what was lost with the X changes.

Still, I'd love to at least try one for a greater certainty. Honestly, we can only say what we think we would or wouldn't without sitting on it and / original test riding. Love seeing the revew great vid, I'm sure you have thought of it long ago but a simple set of mechanics or medical style disposable rubber glove to wear under your cycling gloves can keep the water off your hands to some extent. Probably won't help, though, in the long run.

It looks like there are a lot of little changes to bring the price down on both (not a bad thing.) Plastic fenders on the X, non-adjustable front suspension, (welded on passenger peg mounts, instead of removable?), keyless gone (not a bad thing.), (exhaust is routed tighter to the body?). The XE got rid of keyless too? 45mm front forks instead of 47mm? Love the styling on both though. Cool desert hotrod flair.

I agree with most in that ‘23 XE (or XC) is the way to go. Triumph had a decision to make, keep producing a premium niche bike that struggled to sell or cheap it out and go after a different market. I would’ve liked an upgraded revamp. Not a downgrade on a visually similar platform. I own an XE. Love it, with the exception that in the last few years triumph is putting out bikes that require continuous warranty claims. After years and years of owning numerous triumphs, it’s sadly time to move on. Hello Honda.

Specs look quite close to F900 GS in terms of weight and handling. BMW considers heated grips 'vital' for rider comfort and handling. I forget which article, but they said the grips were automated for 'outside' temperature. Would be interseting if Triumph made a HP2 version with more regard to saving weight.

Some of us like to ride off road NOT in race mode all the time. It seems that all the reviews of this bike and other scrambler style bikes (other than your reviews) put down any bike that doesn't race fast. I would go with the X model just because I'm old and don't want the high seat of the XE. However, I still want cruise control. What is it with these companies that don't do that?
@logangodofcandy
@logangodofcandy 5 месяцев назад
The first four model years were designed to be off road bikes, with slight favor for road or off road per the two models. XE sold to all the people that wanted to be able to go off-road hard core or anybody that wanted the idea of going hard off-road. The XC was still too much bike for most people, who still don't go off road. They reduced the X to be a road bike for all the people that wanted their bike to look like they take their bike off-road, but are actually just old men that aren't serious about the bike. If you want a dedicated road bike, just get the t120.

Im my opnion they have simply downgraded this new bike compared to the previous version. Thats how they were able to “lower” the price. I Demo'ed one about a year and a half ago. Like the concept, like the motor, but feel they really need to address the exhaust and the standing position. I come from the off-road side and disliked the standing position which for me really limits its off road capabilities. I have found this issue on a few other bikes and it really limits you not having a comfortable standing position to control the bike from.

2024 XE looks like a downgrade from the 23’s. The only change that I would want is the ignition key. I’ve noticed you are a bit knock kneed and that makes the pipes more intrusive to you. I actually have to bring my knees inward. The stock pegs suck, I replaced mine with pivot Pegz for extra width and length. The bike pogoing isn’t an issue if you take the time to adjust the suspension for how you are riding it. I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to retrofit the keyed ignition to my 2023 Xe.

Sorry, but most of the people I see on Scramblers are wannabees. People who want to look like endurists but not more. Its like all the Harley drivers who want to look like HA but are actually accountants working for an insurance company. Everything today is about how it looks not how it works. I suspect that's why Triumph added more stuff but dropped the price - a 17,000-euro pricetag for a scrambler probably didn't help with sales targets. I could be wrong though. But I agree with the absurdity of "buying a lifestyle" (although aesthetics are important).

I wouldn't buy this heavy, expensive and heating pipe for offroad. So the XE models makes no sense for me. I like Scramblers, they are very cool but they are too heavy and lack suspension travel compared to a KTM 690 or T7. I dont think have enough fuel range either. Much of the appeal id these bike is appearence so changing the tank may not be an issue. For someone who is shorter it may be a good option. All that said, I think its a very cool bike and would enjoy having one in my collection. In the real world, if you actually riding off road you wont use cruise control. If you are doing real off road that calls for nobbies your gonna wear them out on the highway getting to the dirt.
