Cannondale’s cheeky trail tyrant appeals to your playful side and is one of our Trail Bike of the Year contenders for 2020. It's the kind of bike that’ll put a smile on your face, but make sure you’re aware of its limitations on chunky trails
The Habit is Cannondale’s 130mm 29er trail bike that comes in various alloy and carbon models, as well as a female specific build. My Carbon 3 bike gets a carbon front triangle with an alloy rear for a balance of weight and cost.
The Habit has found much visibility under Josh Bryceland - former DH World Cup racer and now jibber-extraordinaire. Okay, his Habit is far from stock (longer fork, coil shock, smaller wheels), but if you’ve seen what he can do on that frame, it should give you an idea of what it might encourage you to try.

I know I'm late, but could you describe the felling of the bike when you are going downhill (bike park). I have a big bike park next to me so it would really help, if you want to of course its your time, because I'm going to buy a bike this year.

I have a 2019 Habit 1. I’m an older, larger rider 6’4” 202lb ( 1.93 m, 91.6 kg). I think this bike is a blast for the riding I do, but it does have limitations as spelled out, however I wasn’t looking for an enduro machine rather an AM bike and this has fit the bill. The bike does climb well up 17-18 degree or more slopes as long as you position your body and lock the suspension. Being taller, I like pointing the bike down hill and it inspires confidence vs my XC race rig. I don’t feel like I’ll go over the bars just down be doing any mass air, but I don’t think this bike was designed as an optimized bike park sled.

@ronald zagorski I ordered the 2020 Habit 3 yesterday, cant wait. Im 6-2 and 220lbs 64 years young! intermediate rider thats wants more fun on local single track than my Cannondale Trail 4 hardtail that i learned on. I am so freaking stoked :) Going to a MTB skills clinic in Alabama this Memorial weekend two full days of skills technics.. Yeah!

Honestly, that would be boring. Most of of the competent hardtails differ very little except in spec. The small brand, unique ones won't participate in a test like this

I agree with you. I have a great full suspension bike. I ride my xtr hardtail 80% of the time. Way faster bike. And climbing blow full suspension away. The only thing full suspension has on a hardtail is it takes bumps better.

Really nice review as always, but please tell me, how come that in most of the tests of mtbs nowadays (not one particular, just in general) there's this argument of bikes being not capable enough in some scenarios? There are XC bikes being ridden with Minions on and rated "not capable enough" on tough trails, or trailbikes not coping with enduro tracks... well, horses for courses is the rule I guess. That's not a fault of a bike that it feels out of place when pushed in places it wasn't meant to.
@TomMarvin1
@TomMarvin1 4 года назад
With relation to this bike's review (and i appreciate you said 'in general'!), it's that this was done as a grouptest of 10 bikes, and I felt that, in comparison with its cohort, it wasn't as capable on the more demanding tracks - so, more of a comparison for context, if that makes sense?
@kubagajda7347
@kubagajda7347 4 года назад
@@TomMarvin1 Totally, thanks ;) Trailbike category is so broad that indeed a comparison like this makes sense. I'm just kinda allergic to refering to one particular bike as not capable enough when there's no set benchmark. All cool though ;)

Beware: Read Cannondale’s fine print in their Warranty Policy. They may use it against you for their best interest. My $5000.000 carbon fiber frame Jekyll broke after six years of use. Cannondale never made a finding that it was due to use or abuse. A hairline crack formed at a weak point in the frame. The bike was sold to me with a lifetime warranty on the frame. The best offer Cannondale gave me, under their lifetime warranty, was 20% off of retail - yes, that's right 20% off of retail. I fought them on it over a two month period and lost. So, I am now stuck with a 34lb paperweight. Cannondale has what I feel is the worse warranty in the bike business. If you do purchase a Cannondale bike and something goes wrong, know that they probably will not work with you at any level in your best interest. In my opinion, they do do not value you as a customer, they only value your money. This has been my experience.

@Rzagski 4 года назад
Jim P - 6 years and 20% compensation. That seems fair. Everything has a life expectancy and if you were using the bike as intended it’s fair. What would happen if your computer or other electronic device failed after 6 years.....they would say too bad so sad buy a new one. It sucks to having something so expensive break and you have my though. Perhaps pick up a frame on eBay for pennies.
@65010
@65010 4 года назад
@@Rzagski HI Ronald. Thanks for your reply. I own Mac computers which come with a three year warranty - not Lifetime Warranty. If Apple sold me a Mac with a lifetime warranty and I did not abuse it, I would expect them to honor the warranty. Now, with that said, I agree with you, I was not expecting a new bike from Cannondale for free; rather, I was agreeable to a fair prorated price - something between Cannondale's cost and wholesale; heck, I would have been happy with a wholesale price. But 20% off retail? It's not fair for them to make money on their Lifetime Warranty. By the way, one of my computers from Apple, a laptop, is still going strong after 12 years! I did look for a Jekyll frame on ebay, none were to be had. I am now riding a Whyte bike and love it. They come with a four year warranty. I would rather purchase a bike with an honest four year warranty than a bike with a dishonest lifetime warranty. At what point should a lifetime warranty, by Cannondale, be voided? Three years, four years, five years?

At this rate it'll be 2021 by the time they release all of the videos. They have multiple road bike and multiple MTB bike "of the year" series and only about 4-5 videos total released so far. They're barely trickling out the videos for the bike of the year categories.

Why do brands even bother stating an effective seat angle on bikes that have a kink on the seat tube? The effective angle changes as the saddle is raised or lowered.

@TomMarvin1

I think it's our job to give a rounded review, pointing out both its plusses, and its negatives - it would be remiss of us to ignore things like the slacker real seat angle in a review, when it's relevant, even if it's not a deal-breaker. In any review there's an element of facts and figures - geo/value/weight etc, but there's also a ton of 'how did it make us feel' - in this case, while on paper the Habit isn't 'the best', it scored well simply because everyone who rode it really bloody enjoyed riding it - and i think that's as important as the more tangible aspects of the bike. Also, please bear in mind that this is all in context of the bike test itself - you can find more info on how we did the test here - www.bikeradar.com/features/how-we-tested-boty/ Thanks, Tom

Pretty much the most 'fun' bike in the test, kit that worked well, so long as you're not looking for a mini-enduro bike, bricks and mortar backup if you need it, geo that's not super stretched, but is really easy to get on and ride and doesn't mean you have to re-address your riding style or technique = Top 5 Trail Bike of the Year. Cheers, Tom

@britshell - all our reviews are independent, and are never for sale. Any content that has any commercial involvement is marked as such, as per ASA and RU-vid rules. In over 6 years of reviewing bikes and kit I have never once been approached by either a brand, nor anyone from Immediate Media's commercial team, asking me to modify or massage a review. It simply does not happen. Thanks, Tom
@britshell
@britshell 4 года назад
@@TomMarvin1 Sure ;) not for "sale." But we all know how things work in reality. You say nice things about a mediocre product and ohhh what's this your company gets selected for an exclusive look at the new product XYZ first. Companies will never outright "ask" for a posative review, they know not to leave a paper trail, but everyone involved knows what is expected of them.

As Tom already mentioned, this is absolutely not a paid for review. All of our sponsored content is clearly marked as such when we upload to RU-vid, and in the video description. @mevszach 4 года назад
Please add the weight to your reviews 🙏
@TomMarvin1
@TomMarvin1 4 года назад
Hey Mevszach, I/we do sometimes, however I actually don't think it often adds much to a review. If a bike is spectacularly heavy, or light, then it's relevant, however if it's neither here nor there, it's just a number for the sake of a number (the weight is listed, however, in our online review www.bikeradar.com/reviews/bikes/mountain-bikes/full-suspension-mountain-bikes/cannondale-habit-carbon-3-2020review/ ). On the trail, a few hundred grams overall weight difference here or there makes little difference, but can 'look' substantial on a spec list. That said, i understand people do like to see the weight of a bike, so I'll try to remember in future to include it :) BTW, 14.42kg, without pedals, size Large 👍
