This is a longer, in-depth review of the newer 2020 Copper Spur HV UL 2. I walk through and comment on initial setup and things I liked and didn't like about the tent. I also rate the "Dog Friendliness" of the tent, given this channel is all about Remington and me. Lastly, I'll follow up with comparing the standard Copper Spur HV UL 2 with the new 2021 Copper Spur HV UL 2 Bikepack verions.
I did have to return my original tent to Big Agnes and will give the primary reason why I returned the tent.

*Forgot to mention in the "Is this Dog Friendly" section about the mezzanine bin. It is a veritable lint/sticky brush for dog hair. If your dog is taller, sleeps on the end, and tends to get up and turn around to get cozy, they will brush up against the bin and hair gets caught up in there. I tried to put lighter weight items that could easy shed off hair in the bin. Heavier items will weigh the bin down and also give you dog less vertical space to move about.

Just a follow up from Big Agnes on the mysterious tabs on the short end of the bikepack rainfly: "It's an attachment point to hang something from the tent to dry, hang a light, secure the stuff sacks, etc."

Hi everyone- just a quick update, that I have both the NEMO Dagger 2P and NEMO Dragonfly 2P Bikepack in and will be testing them out in the field in the next month or so. If you are looking at either of these NEMO tents vs the BA Copper Spur HV UL2 featured in this review, let me know if you have specific questions or things to look at before I head out on trail!

I’ve just purchased the 2020/21 model UL2 bike pack with the ground sheet that also covers the vestibule areas. The grommets line up fine. Great videos btw. Just stumbled across your channel.

Thanks for your thoughts. 4 inches of tolerance sounds like a lot. Especially when you think about the fact it isn't a big tent in the first place. I'm 6,2 (189cm) and I'm thinking of buying the tent, so 4 inches makes a huge difference for me. Especially when you want to use it for it 2.

Yes absolutely. I'm short so don't have to worry about it too much. I did measure the length of the tent earlier and it's 84.5" vs the stated 88". So it'll still be long enough but could be a tighter squeeze. The good thing though, is that walls on the end are pretty vertical (almost straight up) so you won't run into as much as an issue w/ your head hitting the walls at night.

@@luuk4089 If they are both the "mummy" style pads yes. But since the tent is tapered at the bottom to stated spec of 42" it won't. I measured 39.5" at the short end. You could squeeze them in but the pads would run up the sides for sure at the bottom. The 3P version would definitely fit but then you're add the 12oz extra.

1)Stake out the footprint 2) Put the poles into the footprint 3) Put the tent groment under the footprint and into the poles. 4) Put on the fly & connect it to the footprint.😀

Thanks for making feel Im not crazy and I also went with the bike version after back and forth. . .I am so happy I did, I also don't use the tent bag, I use my big Agnes sleeping pad bag for it and fits perfect. the tent fits perfect in my pack. . I love love love this tent and big Agnes products.

Thanks @sf64! I'm hoping the ShortStiks are as stable and durable as BA said. Still my only worry with the longevity, but if they are that good I could see it being the next thing for tent technology because they are so much easier to put in a pack.

Thanks for this, intelligent and comprehensive review and comparison. I notice these tents dont seem to have any guy lines on the sides of them at the top cross over pole which seems odd. trying to decide between this tent and the hubba nx.

Yes, Guy line points are at each corner about halfway up the pole. Big Agnes has reflective guy out cords pre-installed and also with tensioners. I’m not sure if I’ve seen a tent with a guy out point over the cross pole. Do you have tent example of this one? I am definitely curious and would love to check it out.

@@GIRLplusDOGAdventures from what I’ve seen the msr hubba has guy lines from the cross over pole, I live in the U.K. where wind changes direction a lot. Was wondering if that would help I notice most of the American brand tents don’t seem to have many guy lines in general for some reason.

Not directly. They just basically told me it was within their tolerance level and offered to send me a different tent. I still like the tent for a 1+, but I won't use it for a 2 persons.

Thanks for the review! RE the ground sheet - could you lengthen the cord on the tent corner so it can reach / share the ground sheet peg? (13:36 timestamp)

Yeah you could redo the tent cord to match the length of the tent but it’s still a little bit awkward in trying to get the right tension because the tent/fly aren’t integrated to the footprint. You would probably want to add some type of tensioner to the lengthened cord as well.

Really complete review. I have this model and really like most everything about it, especially the overall quality and design. It really works for me. Goofy question….I hope you don’t mind, but what brand and model of shoes your wearing, Merrill ? They seem to be very lightweight and have a nice mesh for ventilation, as it’s usually hot when I’m hiking. Thank yo! Kenny

Hi @Kenny McIntire! Not goofy at all. Those are Salomon Speedcross. I think I have the 3rd version but they are now on version 5. These are great for easy terrain hiking, camping, general adventure, etc. I have 3 pairs!

Hi @George Davis- both tents are super different depending on what you’re looking for. The CS is good for a 1+ tent and Dagger good for 2P. There is a pretty big weight difference. I also had issues in the mud/rain with the Tiplock buckles. Did you see that on my Dragonfly long-term review?

Those are huge tolerance variables!! I bought the Tigerwall Bikepack 2 and 3 and noticed both weighed the same on my scales. Same! But the 3 was marginally larger but NOT to their specs either. Under by 4” as well. Might be like you say, cut to spec then sewn. Yet my Salt Creek 3 is on spec and huge!

You've answered my question, I have the hexagonal footprint and couldn't for the life of me work out how the tent poles connected to it and how the tent was supposed to clip into the clips on the footprint as they didn't fit.! I was going to call BA but don't need to now 👍 Can't understand why the would make a footprint that wasn't a perfect fit for the tent.!

My thoughts exactly! Especially when they promote a "fast-fly" setup. Definitely not fast the way they have it designed. So if don't think you'll ever need that fly-only setup, then better off spending your money on a cheap homemade footprint.

Thank you for such great review. Looking at 3 person versions of BA and this makes me possibly reconsider. 4 inch is unacceptable “tolerance” at this price, plus issues with ground sheet. What a shame. Water pooling at the top also big concern for camping in UK.

@@camero220 The footprint is the same shape, and a decent bit of kit (lightweight etc) but what I can't understand is why it has connectors (that are colour coded) that are similar to the tents but they don't clip into or fit the tents connectors.! So you can't connect the footprint to the tent even though it seems to made to fit. You need to buy more tent pegs for the footprint. Confusing to say the least. Is it worth the £80 I paid for it.! Nope, but I do prefer to have the footprints that are made by the same manufacturer as the tents If I can get them, so I'm pleased I have it.

For me, the footprint is expensive for the design and utility. When you use the footprint with the tent, it doesn't directly connect to the tent or rather it doesn't integrate directly with the tent (by BA design), so it's a little awkward and you'll need to stake it out separately. If you plan on using it in the fly only mode, then it could be worth the cost. You can make your own footprint for much cheaper if you don't plan on using the fly only mode.

@@luvit7567 is the footprint color coded because if you set up the fast fly, the poles are also color coded as well? That way you connect the right end of the poles to the matching end of the footprint? Idk just brainstorming...

@@jennifercowick2731 Hi, yep, the footprint is colour coded for the poles, red & grey but still doesn't fit. The footprint is slightly bigger than the fast fly/tent, you can get them in but the footprint won't be stretched out. It's a shame because you now need six pegs/stakes for the footprint, but would only need two if it fit correctly. It's a strange one 🤔

In theory, yes if it's the 2020 Copper Spur version. If it's the previous year, then the it won't because BA changed the grommet design and the locking mechanism w/ the rainfly.

Yeah a little disappointed because if it was as stated, it would by far be the best UL tent. Still a good tent but more 1 plus.

Would two 20inch sleeping pads and a small Boston Terrier fit inside the tent or would this be too tight for a UL2?

If you're Boston sleeps with you yes, but SUPER tight squeeze because the foot area is exactly 40" so you'll just have the pads be pushing up the sides at the bottom if they aren't weighted down. If you're used to tight spaces that you should be OK. Otherwise, you should check out the 3P especially if you can split the weight. The other tent you might want to consider is the NEMO Dagger 2P. It will fit the 2 x 20" pads better since it's a rectangular bottom and has the vertical side walls like the Copper Spur. On a min trail weight basis, it was only 5oz more so may be worth it for the extra room. Slightly cheaper as well.

Idk what year my BA CS is. I thought it was 2020 but it has those dirt daggers & looks like the buckle system is better. I might send it back, because I want short poles. The 3 pole 1 hub system might be less complex on the Tiger...idk?

I still love the DF bikepack. It does have some condensation issues with the higher bathtub floor but that also gives it better wind protection. Haven’t tried the Hornet or Tigerwall yet, afraid that Remy will tear up the floors. They are super expensive now too so might try to find a used one on sale before I get a brand new one

I would much prefer a continous zipper as well, just got my bike pack version and set it up to try it out in the kitchen (it's winter here) the zippers don't seem to close perfectly either, so ticks and mosquitos could get in though unlikely .

I hear you on the continuous zipper. The tent manufacturers who do that also need to design the pitch of the tent to work w/ the continuous zipper. The NEMO Dragonfly has the continuous zippers but I still need 2 hands to unzip because of the tent pitch. But it's still really convenient because I was able to unzip both zippers on the bottom and reach out into the vestibule and minimize the open part.

I noticed the BACS I tested was shorter & narrower than the Nemo DF even though the 1p specs were the same. Like 88 in Nemo, 85 or 86 BA....a guess..

Yeah the DF has a bigger footprint but has more angle on the side so you get less volumetric room but you also save on weight

Wait so the poles don’t go through both the tent and the footprint? Also, if you do the fast fly setup and put the tent on from inside don’t you need to disconnect the poles from the footprint grommets to get them in the tent body?

Yes and yes. So very cumbersome if you’re trying to set up the tent after you do the fast fly. If you can do the fast fly to wait out the weather, it’s easier to just take it down and start with the tent when the weather clears.

I use the carbon stakes: "Stakes on a Plane". I have them from @Stakes, Z-Packs & some others. Once I broke a head, but I pounded it pretty good with a rock into the frozen ground.

The orange Velcro straps aren't for bike handlebar hang, they are to secure the fly to the poles. Good review!

@@GIRLplusDOGAdventures I didn't have a problem. I had a question about the materials used in the Tiger wall and copper spur and asked the question while I had a representative to talk to. I have a new tent and a footprint and they do fit together as they should.

I definitely like the bikepack version vs the standard much better with the short poles. And definitely the color is great. If you don't need to tie it to your bike, I would switch out the stuff sacks to save some weight. The tent & fly can fit into a 4L stuff sack but it's super tight so better to put it into one that is 5-6L. I actually just put the poles into a Walmart shopping bag. I think this will save you 5-6 oz.

I'm not really a ultra light weight person but wouldn't be opposed to it since I just moved to Washington State. Did this tent hold up with your dog in it? From the reviews they say the material isn't durable and I don't want my dog tearing up the floor.

@@grantgray1759 I have an IG account for my dog (@remy.kins) but no pics of the tent set up. I have some of my amateur YT videos from last fall where I took the standard version out and you can find those on my channel. I got the replacement bikepack so late in the season I haven't been able to field test yet, but actually will be taking it out this weekend for a 3 day backpacking trip. The floors are pretty thin, but I always carry a pack towel with me and lay that down and don't have issues. Plus the towel comes in handy for wiping off the dog and stuff. The other option to help protect the floors from your dog is just to buy a 1/2 yard piece of XPAC or a Sil Nylon from Ripstop by the Roll or Dutchwear Gear. I actually found this helpful for also throwing down gear on wet grounds so it's a very handy piece of fabric to have on hand. I also use this XPAC piece on breaks for the dog to lie down on.

@@grantgray1759 Also, if you're not an ultra-light person, maybe consider the NEMO Dagger? I LOVED this tent because it has a rectangular base so very intuitive to set up and the floors are a 30D. The trail weight (tent, fly, poles) is only 3 lbs 3 oz while the Copper Spur came in at 3lbs. So really you're only adding 3 oz. and you get way more foot room if your dog sleeps at the foot of the tent. The only thing that I wish it had is the overhead storage, but you can buy a gear loft or if you're only using this for 1 + Dog you'll have space on the floor. The color is a bright green though, so not the dark grey and standard tent poles.

In the video you setup the tentt wrong! The proper way to set up the footprint is to stake out the footprint via the loops, then "stretch" the main body of the assembled tent out to meet the grommets in the staked out footprint (there is plenty of flexibility in the tent poles to do this), then finally clip the rain fly clips into the footprint clips. The result is that the floor of the tent is stretched out perfectly to all corners. So no need for the mentioned extra pegs Best regards Jakob from Denmark

Hi Jackob- I emailed BA on this issue, because my previous tent the footprint you would do this, but there a lot of extra slack in the footprint so the grommet and key hole don't quite line up and neither do the stakeout points. So yes, you can try to do this just to connect them somewhat, but it is not meant too. I didn't show in the video but I have pictures of this option. By the way, here's BA response to the issue when I asked them about it: "When you use a footprint with the whole tent including the tent body, the footprint does not provide any structure to the tent. You can stake it out if that works to keep it from blowing away, but the 2020 Copper Spur HV UL series gets its strength from a close integration between the tent body-poleset-rainfly or the footprint-poleset-rainfly. That's why the footprint's straps and connectors are positioned slightly differently than the tent body."

HI, I have the same tent and bought the BA hexagonal footprint and no way can you connect the FP to the tent, the clips on the tent don't clip into the FP (completely different male/female connectors) and if you clip the poles into the FP after you've connected the inner body of the tent, then the FP won't stretch out beneath the tent. It's a pain in the arse if you ask me and a real piss take from BA as the FP cost me £80 and I only bought it because thought they'd fit perfectly.

I can image! Probably similar to some of the mountain terrain in Colorado The Rocky Mountains definitely an appropriate term. I frequently just end up trying to find large rocks to stake my tent down or guy it out since I break at least 1 stake every time.

Always a very hard question! Definitely depends on what you’ll need it for is what type of backpacking. I will say I use the Dragonfly a lot more but it’s very specific for my backpacking with Remy

In my other video Copper Spur vs Snow, I actually bent the new Dirt Dagger stake just in my backyard so definitely will be carrying different ones with me.
