2020 Ford Explorer ST | Under the Covers 

What's your initial reaction when you see a blacked-out Ford Explorer on the road?

This all black ST is gorgeous.

That Focus thought you were the police lol

This is finally a review where they show what the st can do. People don't understand that this vehicle is to fun because it's one of the only suvs that is awd but rwd bias so the tail end reaches out anytime you hit full gas around a corner and this handles so fucking good. This cars tuning potential is insane. Get yourself a zfg tune for 700 to and get your e50 and your throwing down 0-60 in 3.8 or less quartes of 12.1 and lower thats insane on just a tune.

Definitely one of the better reviews of the ST. Pointing out some things that no one else has… great job!

I take this car over any high end suv. Reason being people assume it's a cop car. no one bothers you. I got the full limo tint and even went ahead a put an interceptor pushbar on mine. the perks only this particular car can give you.

I’m in NY and have the Blue ST. Our County police have the same color on the body so I’m a slow down magnet on the Taconic. 😆 This is our 6 th Ford from Expeditions to the Escort GT; it’s worth every penny.

The blacked out windshield changes the whole look of this beast.

After 11 years, I just traded in my 2011 Camaro SS-(2SS) and bought my new black on black 2021 ST last week with the street pack perf. brakes and 21" wheels. Got all the windows retinted today. Just want to say that the rear "kick trunk" option does work when you wave your feet forward and backward whether the truck is locked or unlocked. However, It will not work if you wave your feet under the tow hitch area. Any place else but there and it will work as advertised. I agree with you, I absolutely love the (back & bottom) massage & ventilated seats for the driver and passenger. The ST is not as fast as the Trackhawk or a Durango Hellcat, but the more I drive it, the more I'm loving it.

My Bronco order arrived. But I had decided it had too many compromises, so I got the 2022 Explorer ST. Phew! Its so much more suited to my lifestyle.

Best review and history I've seen . Gonna order in spring. Only thing I won't get are the 21 in. wheels. Signifintly better tire options with 20 in. wheels.

I'm trying to get my wife to consider one of these. She's only thinking alfa Romeo and exotic names, but this is way more powerful and has improved a lot. I can only imagine how fast this will be with a tune

We put in a pre-order for a 22 agate black Explorer ST a couple weeks ago. If everything stays on schedule we should have it just before Christmas.

I recently got this Ford. Almost identical, except the computer tablet is horizontal on mine, and smaller. I love the car. It's very fun to drive. A lot of power. I'm 5'11, and I wish the driver seat could go half an inch lower just because I would prefer more space between my head and the ceiling, but it's just a very minor gripe. But yeah this might not be for drivers over 6 ft tall. The foot unlock on the tailgate works, but sometimes it does take a few swings. I also wish the tailgate was a little quieter when closing. It does consume a considerable amount of gas. With the gas prices pretty high right now, it's something to keep in mind.

The cinematography is by far the best I've seen on car reviews. Holy shit, this channel is underrated.

FYI, the reason for the exhaust pointing down, is in previous years the exhaust fumes would make their way into the cabin from the back and, well, you can imagine how horrific that could be. This is why they point down. I have a 2020 Limited and I love mine. Fun video. 🤘🏼

I agree with the seat extension comment - definitely not enough. When I first got mine it felt like few inches were missing. You can compensate by having the bottom cushion lift up. Also, someone who drove mine said he found the highlander seats more comfortable.

Love my 2020 ST. Waiting on my Borla ATAK exhaust now. Went to the ST Experience in UTAH Last year and they gave me Black ST Badges. I have basically the package you have in this video plus I tinted the windows up front. My lift gate works properly. Never have a problem with my foot opening either. I got mine in August 2019 the day it came off the truck on delivery day. Gonna do a 93 Octane tune this year as well hopefully. I Love watching people brake when they see me. Lol. Great Video.

Whoa Mike, don't change the layout. First of, you start with a quick front to back and then you get more detailed by going back to front and you need up in the driver's seat talking about the infotainment. That is perfect. Perfect transitions that cover everything. Subtle things like carpet in the wheel well to double pane glass.

Think you really hit the nail on the head here. Yeah a lot of people harp on the interior quality, but it is what it is. Theres no other SUV with this level of performance and utility at $50k, especially with the recent price cuts. The Durango SRT is $70+k and is a gas guzzler for around the town errands. I'll take the tunability and fuel efficiency of a turbo motor over an NA V8. Performance-wise its close to a Cayenne or X5 AND it has 3 rows.

Excellent review and as for rattles we have a 2016 explorer and it has 140000 miles and there are no rattles of any kind so far it is the XL TRIM. Just for the sake of not having a ruined engine at 138000 miles we had the water pump and timing chain components replaced this is the Achilles heel of this 3.5 engine however it is worth the money to save the engine from getting coolant in the oil and destroying the engine. Also just had the struts shocks replaced so we are good for another 150000 miles. As with any vehicle struts and shocks and water pumps and timing chain components are eventually going to have to be replaced in any gasoline or diesel powered vehicle.

You are bang on about the front driver seat part, yes the lower one , Iam 6.1 and owned a new explorer in the middle east for 4 years while cursing the seat everyday. American cars and stingy seats, can't fathom. Rest everything else of the car was sheer pleasure. The issue of the seat has been there from 2012, so even in 2021 ford hasn't changed.

Probably not for most, but the vertical iPad is a dealbreaker for me.

I have been enjoying my 2021 Ford Explorer ST I upgraded my exhaust system with the Bolora S type mines is blacked out just like the one in the video I changed those blue Ford emblems out with some red Ford emblems it looks pretty tough

I have the 2020 ST, being 6’1”, the front seats not extending is ok with me. The massage features make you forget about anything else.

Just grabbed one of these for myself, the price is high but cheaper than anything this size with this speed and options! In the end of a few weeks and 5k miles of travel, I love it… 1. The rear door open lock handle is awesome when you have kids ( didn’t notice the rear hatch issue?) 2. Sad truth on the pipes, The exhaust is pointed down because of law suits: they had a bad run years back, models that leaked carbon monoxide into cab & hurt people, and that was the fix… so they think, Google it. It was a different engine and design so no issue on this one 3. The sound is fake, it’s pumped in the stereo… but done seamlessly. 4. I went from a camaro SS to this… no regrets. My kid loves this ride! It’s a blast but also great daily. Also has massaging seats, auto drive tech ( helps with fatigue on trips) and …. For the record, the silver lugs spinning helps my no top rail cop looking ride pull off the look… lol people literally pull over when they see me coming up behind them, lol.. great ride, even has aftermarket support, my only complaint is that idiotic laying on screen when backing up… it’s really bad.

Mike great review. Looking back now, if cross shopping both where would you lean if keeping for min 3-4 years. Have one little one and one on the way. I feel like the ST covers it all even if missing some amenities like 3rd row USB and cabin talk. But also can't argue the value of the Telluride in SX-L or Nightsky trim. I'm cross shopping both, but not with both as new. Telluride would be a factory order 2022 but ST would be a CPO 2020 with roughly 30,000km or less. Ends up same price range.

Even in 2023, the Explorer has style 🎉.

The 2017 has the same features of opening the doors with just having the key near.

I have a '21 blk/blk ST. LIKES: Speed, handling, pano roof, massaging seats are redic, captains chairs, fat steering wheel, HOT heated seats compared to my previous Lexus RX, decent gas mileage, fat wheels and tires, driver assistance w lane centering and stop and go WAY better than Lexus system. DISLIKES: iphone 12 doesnt work on wireless charging pad - something abt the magnets in phone (I bought another one that fits perfectly for $50), door thunk not totally solid, fake exhaust tips, virtual dash not customizable enough, upgraded stereo not super loud but decent quality. The vertical ipad thing is not a big deal for me. Not a dealbreaker at all. Overall really like the car, I was laughing the first time I drove it. So quick and fun to drive. Love the blacked out look. Perfect compromise if you need an SUV. Nothing floaty abt this thing. Always look fwd to driving it. Looking fwd to going back into the office soon. Will enjoy the 30 min commute.

Great video. FYI other differences between 2020 and 2021 are some improved / modified interior materials. Instead of gray/black plastic - they switched to an almost piano black - shiny material.

The Explorer's. They have their niche. Positioned just under "entry level LUX SUVs" (which I think starts at $85k CAD). They offer every TECH most of us want and would neecd. I like the NAV screen in portrait orientation. If anything it could be a 12"...HEH! Faster response? Not that important as most of the time we're driving and not playing with the screen. Even when parked would mere fractions of a second matter?? "Sport SUV's". To me an oxymoron. You want sportiness? Buy a sports car. SUV's "were" about practicality. You bought them because you knew you'd be hauling items that wouldn't fit in any sedan trunk. And to maximize space you'd get a SUV with as boxy a rear as possible. So for what it is...intended for...The Explorer family scores big. As does the Edge. Reliable. Plastic bits? Expected on any domestic. Short of an entry level LUX SUV (e.g. Lincoln Aviator..maybe Navigator too? Land Rover Defender/Discovery....etc.). Makes me LOL seeing that some guys are putting loud exhausts on SUV's. Drive them too hard? Take corners too fast....? With their high centre of gravity, boxy shape...weight....
