2020 Honda Jazz e:HEV review - Not Your Average Hybrid

This week I drive the fourth generation Honda Jazz, a model known as the Fit in the United States. However, this latest model won't be sold Stateside, and in Europe it will only be available with this electrified powertrain - the unusual e:HEV hybrid.
It's a system that's quite unique, compared to other hybrids on the market, and it actually boasts impressive in-town efficiency (watch the video to find out why it's such an unusual hybrid setup). The car overall feels well engineered, the interior is cavernous and feels more premium than before and my top of the range tester came with plenty of bells and whistles that sweetened the deal. It is a tad expensive, though, and this is one of the reasons why it will never be as popular as models from the Euro subcompact establishment.

Have you reviewed this at high speeds like 120 km/h-150 km/h. How was the cabin noise and fuel efficiency?

@@gokcan83 It is actually quite quiet at up to around 110 kmh. When i drove it at 140 kmh on the motorway, it felt a bit boomy and noisy inside. Nothing major, but not best in class in this respect. Regarding the efficiency, I did not specifically test it at high speeds, but it really shouldn’t exceed 6.5 l/100km at higher speeds.

@1488SIG Not sure what the exact distance is, but I'm pretty sure you'll fit. You should go to a Honda showroom and try it out. Maybe explain to them what you're trying to do first :)

Very nice and in my opinion very objective and realistic review (which is rare nowadays, most reviews today are repeating the brochures of the manufacturer... they are more advertising than review..) ... Well done! PS. The car is indeed on high price but if you add all its features to teh competition (ie 10 airbags, automatic, real hybrid, full auto safety features, semi leather seats, navigation, etc) then probably the competition is more expensive or non existent (practically the only real hybrid competitors are the Toyota Yaris and the Clio Hybrid and these get more expensive at such full features...). The real question is the one on the video: if you want a sport-oriented car you should look elsewhere. If this is not your first priority though, this car is most probably the best overall choice...

Great review, thank you. I've had three Honda Jazzes, and am planning on getting this one. I've never had a single breakdown in all the years I've owned Jazzes, and have moved house several times. The seats folding flat and interior room is amazing.

Thank you for watching! The rear ' magic seat ' setup is unique to Honda and I'm actually surprised other manufacturers haven't copied it because it's brilliant :)

@@OneTireFire Yes, I've made huge use of the magic seats over the past few years ...... in fact most mornings, I just lift a seat up and shove whatever bags I need to move in the back footwell. Brilliant.

My wife just bought a new Honda Jazz hybrid 2021......perfect for the roads of Rome! I am seriously considering selling my vw golf 7 and buy the cross star version for myself!!!!!

Good review, we've had all three generations of Jazz, our current is in RS form and like them all it's been excellent. We would like upgrade to this 4th gen but agree the front is very goofy. I think a darker colour might hide that grille. We are aware of the pedestrian and old folks image of the Jazz, but in terms of all round practicality and ease to live with, no other supermini can touch it.

I totally agree with you that it is the most practical supermini (probably ever), and if that's your main concern when buying a city car, then the Jazz is kind of your only option. But for me, I'm not sure I could live with the pint-sized minivan looks that it has (which it's always had), especially now that its front fascia looks like a confused alien's face. I honestly have not seen one in a darke color yet, but I'll get back to you when I do. Thank you!

Excellent test drive commentary. A description of all the safety feature on/off operational controls whilst on the move would be useful for me as a prospective purchaser. Thanks for a relevant and comprehensive video.

Happy you found it useful! In regards to the safety, the car comes with forward collision warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, cross traffic monitoring and even a central airbag located between the front seats.

It reminds me of diesel electric locomotives where the Diesel engine is just something that powers a generator for the electric motors at the wheels. The railway had this technic since the middle of the last century 😁

Yes, that's pretty much how this works, but it's nowhere near as common in the automotive industry as it is for railway applications.

The engine pretends to upshift through the gears when accelerating, just for the driver's entertainment. There's no gearbox. That's mad! Excellent review.

Excellent and informative review. Two questions: why are the front lights LED but some of the rear lights old-fashioned tungsten halogen (you can get LED in the boot if you pay extra). Two, why don't Android users get a wireless connection by default? There's a setting in the engineering menu which can enable a wireless Android connection.

I have no idea why they didn't fit the vehicle with LEDs for all exterior illumination, but I've noticed to be a thing on Japanese cars more so than for other brands. I was not aware you could enable wireless Android Auto - I'll have to look into that.

We have the hybrid Jazz it's amazing averages 72mph on our 26 daily commute very comfortable spacious inside for a small car we drive on mainly country roads the size makes it very nimble. The magic under the bonnet is very, very clever the only moan it sometimes crashes over pot holes if you don't see them in time British roads in some places are appaling.

I agree with everything you said: its efficiency is second to none and it is great to drive around a city. I too noticed that it crashes a bit over some potholes and over some speedbumps, I even noticed the entire steering column moving (more than it should in any car, IMHO).

I've just put an order in for the SR after having a test drive yesterday. I used to have a 2012 hybrid Jazz and felt that they missed a trick in getting rid of it. The new hybrid system is incredibly smooth and the cabin more roomier than the Mk3. The thinner A-beam pillars are very noticeable from the earlier models. I know that it has a reputation in the UK as an "old person's car" but I feel that this is unfair; it's both a super mini and a practical family car. It doesn't have any performance options, this probably marks it down in the hot hatch market. If the Mk4 is out of your price range, check out a 2nd hand Mk3, a 2017 CVT model will come in under £9k (the CVT gearbox is fantastic to drive)

I wish there was a jazz, or some other Honda with a similar system, except with a bigger battery giving ~10-20mile EV range. (and perhaps PHEV) Eg say 3 mile shopping trip, you could do that fully on electric power, not starting a cold petrol engine. I suppose a PHEV jazz would have no magic seats though, to accomodate the bigger battery. Civic hybrid will be interesting. I hope there is a honda PHEV

Well, I thought so too before driving the Jazz e:HEV. I thought that it would be compromised by the small battery and virtually inexistent EV only range. However, it proved to be so remarkably efficient in town (used under 5 l/100km with my not-so-economical driving style) that it actually began to make sense for me. Furthermore, PHEVs' big batteries also weigh a lot and when thye're not kept charged, they're just ballast and a PHEV with a dead battery can end up using more fuel than a comparable non-hybrid version with the same engine. PHEVs aren't for everyone, because you need to have them constantly plugged in and charged to make the most of what they have to offer. Non plug-ins consistently offer a bit better efficiency than non-hybrid vehicles, so on that note, I actually think the Jazz makes sense as a non-plug-in. And yes, the bigger battery would surely go under the rear seat and the Magic Seat would be gone :D

Hi Yevgeniy, Thank you! Well, I don't think I ever exceeded 120 km/h during my test, even where that was legal, but it felt like it had more to give. Honda says it has a top speed of 174 km/h, so I'm sure it cruises comfortably at 130 km/h.

Is the suspension soft? And in comparison with the 2018 1.3 cvt model? I've read it is on the firmer side and that is a shame as I have some spine issues and that is a necessity.

Honestly, it's hard to tell. It may be a bit firmer, but I don't think it compromises ride comfort all that much. Opt for the smaller wheels, as that might help improve things.

It's only noisy when you really step on the gas, which won't be often because the noise it makes when you accelerate is not at all pleasant :) This is car for cruising in, not one to be driven hard.

Because it’s not that kind of system. Extra kWh would mean extra weight and the system is actually already remarkably efficient as is - I think Honda actually did a pretty good job making this efficient :)

Yes, but those are plug-in hybrids. That’s what makes this Honda system unique ;) I was honestly very pleasantly surprised with the Jazz e:hev’s urban economy of around 4.5 l/100km with a normal deriving style. Even with my heavy right foot, I got 5.1 l/100km.

From every exterior vantage point it looks like it was created by a committee that couldn't make up its mind what it finally wanted. One almighty mishmash. Overall a design disaster. The shape of the bonnet reminds me of the generous facial features of Miss Piggy. Put a black dot in the centre of each headlamp, add a pair of eyelashes and the image is complete...

Its aesthetics aren't its strong point, but it's still a good car regardless. Honda has never wanted to make this look especially sporty, focusing on making the cabin really roomy and practical.

When I opine that it looks like a committee was 'responsible' for creating its outer appearance I reckon there were three not one group of culprits tasked with that particular brief. The first lot tackled the front end, another the side elevation - ugly in the extreme -and a third the back of the car; the resultant mismash is almighty.

Greek Salad I definitely agree with you on the face - i like the one you own better. However, as a car, you can certainly see the progress from one generation to the next in many areas.
