The 2020 Houston Marathon had just about perfect weather - mid 40s throughout the race and not humid. Even though there were about 35,000 runners, the Houston Marathon course was fast and never felt congested. Conditions were perfect for setting PRs, and a lot of people did. I just wasn't one of those people. 3:17:12.
It feels like a step backwards, but I learned a lot more about my body. I learned a lot about low HR training. And I learned a lot about the marathon (some lessons I have to learn by making mistakes two or three times, it seems).
Thanks for watching! Leave a comment to let me know you stopped by!

When I saw you walking with the same expression you had at Chicago, my heart just about broke. You're right, it will take you a few times to get the lessons learned. But the important part is that you're learning them. Keep your chin up and the next marathon utilize that new found knowledge. You will succeed. Everyone here is cheering for you.

Kofuzi I know how you feel man. I just ran the 2019 philly marathon on pace for a 3:15 and I couldn't finish it because my knee gave out. It's tough when you work hard and then the results dont come. Your hard work may betray you but you should never betray the hard work. Good job man and keep it up you have it.

the work gives the result it gives. it is emotionless in that equation. we get disappointed when our hopes don't align with the math.

From the cold weather here in Canada, I was cheering you on every step of the way, watching your progression thru the miles. Watching the live coverage on RU-vid and looking at the Houston Marathon app on your progression. I know that your videos during your race is about you wanting, among other things, to share your journey with us. One thing you may consider (not sure if you have done so before as it relates to your 3:00 Project), on race day, leave the camera and just run - no videos - Run for yourself! We will be there at the finish line, virtually😊. I am no expert but just my two cents from someone who got inspiration from you to take up running even though I have no natural talent/ability to be a runner

i spent a lot of time while eating breakfast after the race thinking about how i would have felt if the 20 something mile markers didn't feel like something slipping away and instead felt like a race nearly completed. perspective, i think, would have gone a long way.

I enjoy following your journey very much, as well as hearing your thoughts on running equipment. I appreciate all the work you put into putting out quality content. And not everyone can be vulnerable and honest with as much grace and humility as you are. And just because lots of people see your Houston results, I hope that you don't make too big a deal out of what you see as a step backwards. Elite runners to beginning runners and everyone in between have good and bad races. It's a normal part of running. Also, I think that rather than judging success based on one long run, it's good and proper to be proud of and satisfied with all your training leading up to the race. The things you experienced, the things you learned, the ways in which you pushed your body--all those things are also valuable, even if they might not seem quite enough at the moment to take away the sting of a disappointing race. Races are a very small part of who I am and what I do as a runner, and that's true whether or not I have a good race or a bad race. I look forward to hearing about your next race, how you'll train for that, and what equipment you'll use.

We learn something at every marathon and I'm sure there were several takeaways from your training cycle and race day experience. If it was easy everyone would be killing it out there on race day. A marathon is such a humbling experience. These highs and lows are no joke. It's how we deal with challenges and when things don't go according to plan, that determines the long term outcome. Going back to the drawing board and taking our learnings from every experience, both good and challenging races, that's how growth happens in training, racing and life. Rome wasn't built in one day. Keep at it and keep inspiring so many other runners out there 🙌

Excellent job my man. And a great job storytelling with your video. Most people can only dream of running a marathon in under 3:20, and for you that was a not so great day. Let's stay healthy, stay focused, and do it again.

This is second or 3rd time I have watched this video. I just ran 2:58 @ Glass City Marathon, Toledo, OH, two days ago...I paid a friend, high school girl to GoPro 9 - me and my friends while she was on my small folding Dahon bike we brought along...she did a good job, but the SD card, we didn’t test out and it was corrupted and we lost some awesome footage...I wish I would have just taken my GoPro 7, which is much better, along with me - like you did here - this is an EPIC video, even if you didn’t hit your goal...I have taken my GoPro 7 on 13 mile runs and it really does not bother me...I regret not doing it for the marathon last weekend...keep up the great work and I love your channel. In order to break 3, I would just log lots of easy miles, 100 mile weeks, and occasionally do steady state or tempos...

I'm sure you're disappointed, but I still find this inspiring that you pushed on and finished (in respectable time!). This is totally relatable. I only did one marathon (going for my 2nd in July) and the bonk was real. Everything for me went well until mile 21, and then it all fell apart. That's my biggest fear for my 2nd attempt - but it's also the challenge I want to take. Keep fighting.

Real proud of you man and keep up the hard work! Get some rest now :p Mini-rant: I was at the half marathon in Houston and my knees almost gave out at 12 miles but I still ended up finishing in abour 2hr:04mins. I have to be realistic with myself that in the past year I have been nutritionally lacking (eating way less than 1600 cals in a day) and not going through my training plan (I would increase distances each week by a lot, ignoring the traditional advice of not increasing more than 10% each week, and almost got injured). My legs genuinely felt like they hated me during the last half and I was screaming at myself for not following a training plan, not listening to my body the past year, and not doing strength exercises along with a regular stretch routine and yoga. But you learn from your mistakes and as a novice runner this was definitely an experience I would go back and learn from going forward.

I saw all the sweat on your shirt. I ran the half yesterday with 1 layer on, long sleeves, capris and knee high compression socks. After a few miles, I wish I wore shorts, still the compression socks, short sleeves and arm warmers that I could slip down to my forearms if need be. I look forward to the recap video to see if how to dress for the weather is one of the lessons. I'm running my first marathon this year and I truly appreciate your efforts in these races and videos. Thank you!

Hey Mike just keep going, even though you didn't hit your target. Your race videos are the things that keep me going on periods where I just want to stop training. You'll get there in Boston, I believe in you. Your dedication is second to none. I can't think of many people who would do 2 hr runs on a treadmill at 4 in the morning! I think the weather was quite a big factor in your race. But I'll hear your thoughts on the race recap video.

It's cool to see some of the course and the crowds along the way from a runner's perspective. A lot of us were following the race online via the webstream here on RU-vid and the official race app, but we didn't really get a sense of what the race was actually like. The "kofuzi fan club" seemed to have the largest presence in the comments and chat during the race, so I am sure many other people feel the same as I do. Thanks for posting the video and for sharing the journey!

Congrats on a good race. You and I had similar problems at Chicago this year (although your times were much faster than mine and it was my first marathon). My next marathon is in Austin in a couple of weeks. I continued with the training program I used for Chicago while incorporating leg exercises to strengthen my legs more. I’m aiming for a 3:40 - 3:50 time. That would be a 15 -25 minute decrease from my Chicago time. Keep pressing on. It’s all learning experiences. Still enjoying the channel.

DUDE!! Another marathon complete and another amazing race. I know it wasnt the time you wanted but you ground that one out really really well. A couple of things I noticed....1) how were the carbon rockets? 2) There looked to be less packs for you to run with to keep motivation up, did that affect things? Either way, proud of you for smashing another marathon out of the park! Onto the next!!
@kofuzi

there were plenty of packs and mini packs to run with. i just kept thinking that i didn't need them. i ran nervous for a lot of the race. paid too much attention to time and not the race plan.
