Kyle takes the 2020 64kWh Kona EV on a range test. Luckily he had a 2020 Bolt EV 66kWh to compare to this week and had similar conditions to run a near identical range test between the two.

Kyle this is yet another super test you have documented with the Kona. It’s the best road test with a Kona since yes guess what ... you’re very own long distance Kona video last year. Hey my man thank you for all the videos it’s great entertainment always a thumbs up for me. I just bought a Kia Niro E and have not bought a level two cord yet. I have a 14-50 at home and I charge my model three on it and I would love your opinion on what kind of charge cord I need to go from the 1450 into my Niro with the J1772?

I noticed what I think may be a slight difference between the 2 tests. The Bolt had 2 occupants for part of the ride (more weight), and if I am not wrong, the Bolt did 70 all the way, rather than reducing to 56 mph for a time while traveling back to the track. Thanks for the compare.

My 2019 Kona over this past NE winter never got less than 240 cumulative, normal mode and normal heat setting. I do about 75% highway, 70 mph. With the warmer weather we're getting 290 with AC, I know owners in Florida and AZ who are getting close to 320. Your test weather was relatively mild and ECO only got you 228? Something's different, think you could explain it?

Awesome range test! So this shows Bolt EV and Kona Electric about even in range.. Now I'd like to see Kia Niro EV and see how it compares.. hopefully it can do about same range, even though it's got about 30km less EPA-range than either car...

Just recently leased a 2020 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid and so far I’m very happy with it. I’ve had the car more than a week now and I’m getting about 52MPG around town. The vehicle has about 425 miles on the odometer and has about 150 miles left on the tank. I hope it gets better mileage as I drive it more.

I bought a Kia Niro specifically for the long range for low cost, and I wanted the extra room in the rear seat. I routinely get 3.5-4 miles /kw on my daily commute in good weather. Almost always use the cruse at 70 mph.

In the Kona/Nero comparisons the Nero is said to have the nicer interior, but one thing this video drove home for me is that I MUCH prefer the touchscreen position on the Kona. It looks just perfectly placed for ease of use. At the end of the day that would be a bigger factor for me than how nice the plastic is.

I like your range tests: You are one of the few testers to do the entire test at 70 mph cruise on Interstate highways. I would like to suggest the following cars to test: Kia Niro EV - Only rated at 239 mi EPA however some testers have gotten much more. Also, apparently it is more refined than the Kona, does not spin the wheels as easily and has more rear seat leg room. Audi Etron - This highly anticipated car disappointed with an EPA range of only 204 mi with a 95kwh battery, nearly as big as the 391 mi Tesla S Raven. But some testers have gotten close to the 204 mi range at highways speeds. But all I have seen were not constant high speed tests. Tesla Model S Raven - Tesla says new EPA rating will be over 400 mi. I would expect a real world range of 350 mi+ which would be a US record. Suggestion: Note the range at which the cars revert to "turtle mode". I think this would be a better more realistic point of comparison than the "dead point" since most people are not going to plan a trip around driving the last few miles at 45 mph on the Interstate!

Since the Kona under reports the speed (reporting 69mph while going 70mph), would it also not under report the distance travelled? Meaning the Kona actually went 232 miles?

Kyle, wonder if the Kia Niro is on your horizon for a test drive. It has a tad more weight, but also has a heat pump for winter driving, which might even out its range.

No, a lot depends on line voltage. Since I’m at 208v it will be a bit slower than 240v at 32amps at home

Can you try running the tests with normal mode and regen level 1, I found the car drives just like and ICE car with very little loss on the range, which makes it more comfortable to drive. Eco mode feels like something is choking the engine and feels like it is trying too hard to go

I like the look of the Kona but the DC fast charging times are long.....100kw max to 80% is an estimated 54 minutes....WOW. But other than that...I like it.

The Bolt is better because it actually exists and you can buy one. Kind of like in the former Soviet Union - used cars were worth more than new ones, because used ones had actually been built; whereas new ones were just a gleam in some factory managers eye and might never arrive.

Can you charge that Kona just with a cord that goes from a 1450 outlet to the 1772? Or does it need an actual charger of some sort that is not built into the Kona?

Kyle, does the charger in your show show you how many kwh's you put in each car after you ran them down to 0 back up to 100% ? My JuiceBox 40 put in 71.5 kwh's after running my Kona down to 2% & 6 kms. There will be loss in the AC to DC conversion done by the onboard charger. Thanks for doing the test. I could be wrong but when Bjorn Nyland tested the Kona he found it had more than 64kwh capacity when new, he speculated that perhaps Hyundai understated the capacity so as to allow for some initial degradation. Who manufacturers the battery in the Bolt? Is it the same as the Kona?

The Kona has 64 kwh usable, total size with buffer is 67.2 The Bolt battery is 66 kwh but probably 62-63 Usable. I asked at the LA car show to GM tech personel and they wouldn't comment on what the usable size was but did state they advertise total battery like most manufacturers do. Only KIa and Hyundai list Usable. I prefer this method as I calculate KMs per KW or in US Miles per KW as used in this test.

@@djscandela Check his Bolt range test. He was able to pull 66 kWh out of the Bolt battery. This Kona test was able to pull about 64 kWh out of the pack (kWh = miles driven / miles/kWh).

Jack W Yes I just reviewed the Bolt review but he mentioned that regen could have added to the number. That’s why I am interested in finding how much was replenished in kWh to bring both back to 100% to compare their numbers. And LG makes the battery for Bolt, Hyundai & Kia

Thank you for the nail-biting conclusion. There is "Soul EV Spy" (android app) to read the OBD2 for the all KIA and Hyundai EV's. (Torque Pro could be setup to do it too) It gives the actual SOC battery % vs the car display, battery cell voltages and temperatures. It would have been interesting to see what the 'almost dead' readings would be. The NIRO EV is heavier and less efficient than the Kona so likely the Bolt could best it on your range test.

I believe that the Kona EV is still only a Carb state vehicle and is not available across the entire U.S.. Is it available in your state or was it driven down from a Carb state?

@@OutofSpecMotoring Well, point is the the Kona does not really compete head to head with the Bolt as the Bolt is available across the entire U.S. and Canada where the Kona is only available in the seven or so Carb states. Not really sure when Hyundai plans on changing their business model for the Kona. Kind of disappointing, don't you think? U.S. vehicle efficiency standards or lack thereof are really derailing EV adoption in the U.S. except for Tesla as they offer EV's as their bread and butter. Bolt and Leaf with Tesla and BMW are only marketing and selling in all states. GM has always had a poor EV and PHEV business model. I'm thinking the Volt would have still been production today if it were not for the change in U.S. vehicle efficient standards by the current administration who is more interested in keeping big oil as a primary energy source. I do give GM credit for putting money on the hood of the Bolt in order to make it truly affordable without the $7,500 U.S. tax credit. Tesla does this to some extent but, their prices seem to fluctuate quite a bit. All non Tesla EV adoption is really targeted for China and Europe due to the vehicle efficiency standards set in those places. Think the EV community needs to be more vocal about this.

I have a 2017 Bolt on lease and 2 adult sized children who sit in the rear seat. (5'9" and 5'11") I'm looking at purchasing a new 2020 Bolt. In Massachusetts, I can get a new Bolt for $22,000. $29,000 for the Kona How does the rear leg room of the Kona compare to the Bolt?

Out of Spec Motoring I agree, but that still doesn’t make up for it not being available nationwide. I’m in Michigan and couldn’t get one without great effort and my local dealer wouldn’t help. I ended up getting the Bolt instead.

@@OutofSpecMotoring I don't know where they sell this car in the world but as far as US buyers are concerned this is a compliance car. If its not a compliance car then why don't they sell it in all the states. I live in Ohio and called the hyundai dealer to go look at this car. They said they do not and will not offer it in Ohio. I could buy one sight unseen from one of the states they do sell it in (which just so happens to be the compliance states, lol) and they would ship it to me but that was it. They also said if it ever needs serviced their mechanics here in Ohio dont have the specialized training in EV's so I would have to take it to one of the compliance states where it is sold on the lots for any repairs. The bolt, nissan leaf and the prius are the only (new) electric cars on the car lots in Ohio.

I'm kind of torn between two sides right now. I want an EV mainly for the fed tax credit as I have a large tax liability and also for redundancy incase it becomes harder to buy gasoline in the future, but the range is a bit weak and I do alot of long distance driving + Uber. I could limit the long distance driving to my ICE vehicles but another issue is, these cars arent exactly affordable. The base Kona EV is about $34k but a decently optioned Kona EV is going to be in the ball park of $42 - $45k after dealer markups, taxes, options... I could afford it yes but I'm also trying to keep my debt as low as possible. The one positive of an EV is, I can focus all my local drives on it so I don't need to worry about gas shortages or complete lack of supply of gasoline should that come to past.. ..Not sure what to do though, buy a used ICE Hybrid or just bite the bullet and pay the premium for an EV with significantly less range than a Hybrid and take the tax credit.

Only thing is you may want to mention particularly for any noobs to the EV world that they really shouldn't drive the battery down to 0% why I prefer Bjorn Nyland's range tests as he typically only goes to 5% before plugging in to a Fast/Ultra charger. Personally where I live GM don't sell the Bolt, RHD country, so only Kona is available of the two you tested. Though weather, battery temp, driving style, topology, tires, all make a difference as to range any individual will get obviously. :)

Hi, I have a Kona Electric with 64kWh battery. I am a little confused that you were able to drive only 229.1 miles, normally it says 285 miles with 100% battery and I easily can drive 250 miles and have about 30 miles left. I also drove at about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. I live in Sweden where we use km so I converted using 1 miles = 1.60934 km. Great video

It’s frustrating that none of the local (Raleigh, NC or even any in the entire state) Hyundai or Kia dealers have any Kona or Niro EVs in stock. When I looked at Hyundai’s website 6-9 months ago the nearest dealerships to have either vehicle was in Georgia or Maryland. I’m sure this is an issue around the country outside of major cities which means much fewer people will ever buy one of these. I hate so called compliance cars that are only sold in select markets. Also, it looks like Hyundai was too cheap to redesign the IP. They just changed the digital portion to display a battery when in the ICE versions it would be coolant temperature (thus the H and L markings). Also, I would argue that even though you started out when ambient temps were 60°F, you never really did anything that would cause the pack to generate much heat. A cruise at 70mph likely doesn’t cause much heat, and as such as temps fell in the evening the pack likely did cool some causing at least some change to efficiency. If I remember correctly the Bolt was tested in ambient temps closer to 70-75°F.

It may be a redesign and changed from the ICE version but it’s better than the bolt which is a ground up EV therefore I have no problem with it

Out of Spec Motoring the Bolt to me is a hodgepodge of GM parts. I know GM considers the Bolt “ground up” but to me the Bolt is so full of compromises, namely it being FWD, having no frunk, the weird way they mounted the HV parts on what’s almost like a repurposed engine mount amongst other things. The Kona EV could be really good if it was offered with AWD, the interior was nicer considering the price and it had more power and could charge at higher rates. The Bolt would be probably my last pick of currently available EVs.

Bear in mind that it was 112 kmh. 90 kmh will give you around 500 km of range.

Now, let’s do that in the middle of a Canadian winter. You will not be getting anything close that kind of mileage. Real world mileage tests need to be done in all seasons to get the real, true average range.

Sigh... All the momentum and opportunity lost for legacy automobile industry. Bolt was / is the EV made for carbon credit and (hopefully) slow down Tesla, rather than to create a good EV. Kona is the first EV made to get into the market in hurry. Kona still beat EV? Yes. There is no brain / expertise / passion behind Bolt by design. What GM could've enjoyed if they were ran by the people who are passionate about the future & EV, rather than bunch of financier and ladder climbers.

nice video! Pathetic battery range at only 70 mph and the air con not blasting! Wow what commuter cars only! Progress in EV range on small frames is not happening! I live in LA and would not even make it to Vegas without a charge. I''ll buy the Kona 2021 with the 1.6 turbo engine and not have to deal with charging every 3hrs+ on a road trip! Telsa are plain UGLY and USA way behind China! The MG EV4 is a far better EV than these models!

TLDR: about 280 watt-hours per mile at highway speeds. More than a Tesla Model 3, probably mostly due to higher drag. Longer answer: Tesla Model 3 is a far better car at a similar price. Tesla value is far better because Tesla invested billions of dollars in battery production at Gigafactory in order to drive down battery costs with massive economies of scale. Hyundai/Kia, not so much.
