In which I give an update on life with the Kona Electric EV after 9 days of ownership. It's difficult to get my hands on it but I snuck out this morning for a drive. Items I discuss are:
Acceleration
Drive Modes
Regenerative Braking
Rear Vents, or lack thereof
Charging
Electrify America
Dealership Experience
BlueLink / Google Assistant
Ride / Seats
Sport Mode
Torque
Navigation
I mention in the video there is a known issue with Electrify America charging stations not talking to the Kona EV properly. Make sure you get the code for the Hyundai Select premium plan from your dealer or from Electrify America to avoid paying the highest charging rate on their DC chargers.
If you are frustrated about not being able to successfully link BlueLink with your Google Assistant, go to the BlueLink Agent page and make sure you are signed into your Google account for the link button to appear on the page: Here is the Hyundai page with the details on Google home integration - follow the link on this page to set up (link to Google Assistant page is down at the time of posting for some reason) owners.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/r....
Hope you find the video useful. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more videos.

Thanks for doing some actual user-experience review and sharing your opinion. A lot of reviews are just people having the car on loan for a day, doing walk-arounds and rattling off the features and specs, so it's nice to actually hear about actual owner's experiences.

My pleasure - I figured there was no point just going through the features, as there are so many videos out there that do that. I will be doing a video this week providing a real-world update on range.

Thanks - we live in North scottsdale at the top of Troon Mountain with a preserve at the back of us - we love it, but it is a little toasty at the moment!

Also - just had the 10,000 mile service. Front pads at 10mm rear pads at 9mm. So basically bugger all to zero wear in 10000 miles!

Good to hear - pretty much what I was expecting, given the majority of the braking is done with the regen system!

Manual braking with paddels, is the best way to go. I have a Hyundai Kona Electric 64kwh.

One thing you might want to try is using the regen paddles instead of auto. I usually keep in in regen 1 and then go down the paddles (2-3) and hold when I need to slow down. It’s the closest thing to dropping down the cogs on a manual ICE. It adds to the driver interaction and means I rarely use the brakes.
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 3 года назад
I use the left paddle to do most of the braking, so rarely use the brakes either. I have the default setting at 3 for each drive mode, so not sure how that works with the auto regen. Your approach is interesting, and I am sure adds to the level of driver involvement.
@ojoimages
@ojoimages 3 года назад
You can de-select auto regen in the user settings. That will leave you free to use the paddles whatever drive mode you are in. I tend to leave it in ‘normal’ and just use sport when I overtake. It’s quite an overtaking weapon. Love the utterly anonymous looks and the faces on people when you blast past😜

Hey Steve, great review! how would you rate the suspension? I'm seriously considering the Kona electric but I wonder how well will it handle the bumpy roads in Montreal
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 3 года назад
Thanks. The suspension is fine - the roads out here are way smoother than they are in Montreal (I lived there for 20 years, so my sympathies on the potholes), so it is difficult to tell you how it will do there - that said, it doesn't crash over bumps and absorbs imperfections well. Bear in mind the Electric has an uprated multilink suspension in the rear because of the packaging constraints for the battery, so that is a definite plus. Also, it is on the lighter side for an EV (around 3,800 lb/1,700 kg), so it has that going for it.

I don’t know about the US spec. but in many markets, the VESS can be switched off, via a button near your left knee. The VESS auto sets to being on, each time the vehicle is powered-up. If you bring the Kona to a complete halt via the left hand paddle, the ‘creep’ function will not activate, even if ‘creep’ has been set. Allowing station-keeping without needing application of the foot brake. If you use the foot brake to bring the Kona to a complete halt. If set to being on, creep will be activated, necessitating the application of the foot brake, if station-keeping is desired. The famed and in some cases infamous charging update. Can be both a blessing and a curse. Some owners have found after the update, that public charger incompatibility issues are resolved. But many have had an undesired glitch, which has reduced all public charging to a maximum of 33kW. It’s a hit ‘n’ miss thing, some Konas are affected and some are not. If yours gets the glitch, there is not an available backward update reset. And unfortunately Hyundai still haven’t sorted a patch. Hyundai changed the BlueLink app sometime late in 2020. So they ended up with two partially incompatible software versions.
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 3 года назад
I have heard mixed reviews about the update, so am in no rush to have it done - I am not sure what the circumstances were of the cars that caught fire, but they seem to be the exception rather than the rule. VESS can only be switched off in the US spec car by unplugging it (or pulling a fuse probably) - to be honest, it's not a big deal and we got used to it pretty quickly. Yup, station- keeping, or auto hold here, only works once you have put your foot on the brake. I much prefer that rather than the creep function which aims to replicate the behaviour of a traditional slush box.

It’s the Battery Monitoring System (BMS). I’m not sure what it entails, but there is a report of a case in South Korea and another in Canada of Kona’s catching fire while charging. Here is Hyundai’s release: “Investigations in Canada and South Korea into the matter are ongoing. Customer safety is our highest priority at Hyundai and we are constantly looking to improve our products. Hyundai Motor Company has since released an update to the vehicle’s Battery Monitoring System. While increasing the battery’s performance and longevity, the update also contains additional diagnostic health monitoring of the high voltage battery and cells to ensure continued quality performance of the vehicle. This service campaign is available globally (including Canada and the U.S.), for all 2019 and certain 2020 model-year Kona Electrics at no charge to the customer. These enhancements have already been applied into new vehicle production.”

My thoughts is where are the electric recharging stations? Sometimes gas is hard to find too.
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 4 года назад
Don Jones The PlugShare app is great for route planning and finding charges. So is the Electrify America app. More and more charging stations are coming on line every day and at the moment they are mostly empty. Hopefully as more people by non-Teslas, the charging infrastructure can keep up.

You mentioned the lack of rear vents. Does it have vents under the front seats? If so, do they do just heat of both AC and heat?
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 4 года назад
I took a quick look under the seats when I did this video and I couldn't see any - I will have to experiment and see if there is airflow in the back. It does appear there are vents in the cargo area
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 4 года назад
I just went and checked. There are small vents under the front seats that blow either hot or cold air into the back. They are small though, so I am not sure how good they will be - I will have to sit in the back one day and test it. The vents in the cargo area appear to be non-functional though. Bear in mind this is a small car and the system in the front has a very strong blower, so it does cool the whole car down relatively quickly.
@daveopen8793
@daveopen8793 4 года назад
@@trackrekord Thank you so much for checking. Well having some under the seats is better than none. I can't remember if the Bolt of the Leaf only had rear vents on the top model. I'm very seriously considering the Kona and your videos have helped a lot.

Been thinking about the efficiency of the level 1 charger (which quite a few people depend on). The efficiency of charging using level 1 is less than a 50kW charger I think. I guess if there is a difference between what reaches the battery, and the amount of electricity drawn from the house, then that would affect the charging cost (and indeed the CO2 efficiency marginally).
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 4 года назад
Absolutely, but I think the losses are relatively low, especially if you don't use an extension cord. I have seen videos where people have actually measured what the transmission losses are.

@ojoimages
@ojoimages 3 года назад
Have you got your 7kw charger yet?(apologies not sure what voltage this is) I say this as I keep the SOC at around 50%. Not sure hovering around at 20% long term is optimal for battery health. Hyundai also say do a 100% charge monthly. Btw - sounds like the dealership hate EV’s!!! They probably see them as an unnecessary cost of the franchise as they get zip out of you in the future- disgraceful!!
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 3 года назад
Yes, I cover the charger in another video - I got a simple 32 amp 240v “level 2” charger, which will do a 100% charge in around 10 hours. As we are not doing a lot of driving at the moment, a once-a-week full charge is enough to keep us going. I think as long as you doing over use DC chargers, the battery will be pretty resilient, but I agree they should be fully charged at least once a month. The sales manager from the dealership basically told me there is no interest in EVs for them - they make very little on the sale of the car (he actually showed me their invoice and the markup was negligible), and where they usually make their money is on servicing. One of the great attractions of EVs is that they need very little maintenance, so no profit for the dealership there either. Ours came with 3 years of maintenance included, but I’m really not sure what it will need - we will see.

Track Rekord - thanks for the replies. My first service cost £72. That involved a sat nav upgrade (I only use google via Apple car play) however the local speed limit indicator needs to be current so an important update. They also updated the BMS. Apart from that it’s just a vehicle check. So a bloody rip off! Oh and they scratched my steering wheel and I have a surprise dink on the door! I thought stuff the service, however a day after it was done an email comes from Hyundai saying that the next 12 months warranty and breakdown cover has renewed!!! Cheeky!

Jonathan Gibson Waiting to get my hands on a Mach-E to review and compare. I’m not expecting the dynamics of the two cars to be comparable - the Ford will be more expensive too. Price and range were two big factors on our choice of the Kona - there is not much else on the US market that comes close at the moment.
@trackrekord
@trackrekord 3 года назад
Jonathan Gibson its a shame they cant upgrade the sat nav OTH, like Tesla do. I am also somewhat perplexed that there is no WiFi connection option on the menu screen, even though it is mentioned in the BlueLink manual - and they say that the system may not be supported once 3G is discontinued . . . I was annoyed that as soon as our subscription to BlueLink was activated, we got a message saying the BMS needed updating - they should have done that before I took delivery of the car - I am thinking the “service” work is unnecessary but I read somewhere you have to do it to maintain the warranty - but I have a feeling that is not legal here.
