Look at the April 2019 issue of Consumer Reports magazine at a library- the Wrangler gets poor test drive scores, and low estimated reliability scores based on the last 10 years for similar Wranglers, and it still gets high owner satisfaction scores. In addition, worldwide crash test scores are poor, while US crash testing is being slow-walked so Motor Trend can give it an annual award and say it has not been crash tested in the US yet. Style over substance. Probably the same for this Gladiator (good movie). One problem is the better a vehicle is off road, the more it sucks on pavement. Maybe it will turn out to be more reliable than the Wrangler - buying the first model year is a gamble.

Jeff Ruebens see that’s your first issue is reading about “estimated” reliability. I’ve seen cars that get high reliability scores and always have issues. A lot of my family are mechanics and see the vehicles that need to be repaired and what years they are. Yes jeeps have reliability issues and so does every other car manufacturer. I don’t care if Honda and Toyota get high reliability scores because wit means nothing. When Honda engines were cracking or have had family with a civic that had 50,000 miles on it and engines blew or friends who work at Honda tell me the amount of transmissions they have to replace because they are not reliable or even with Toyota having a lot of issues with their hybrids and even electronics failing. I don’t follow estimated reliability crap I live in the world and what I experience and others I talk to such as people I know who work at dealerships that what I believe not what JD power says who in the U.S surveys people after 90 days unlike the UK where it after 2 years of actually owning the vehicle.

@@jeffruebens8355 : Sure I remember Consumer Report favored the Rav4 AWD over the Jeep Wrangler. Yeah that was a laugh. BTW, if you want to burn your money buy the Rav4.

That’s a great way to look at the Gladiator. It’s a Wrangler and a truck. Lots of overlanders want this because the Wrangler has always had limited space.

The interior is no better than a Wrangler.

Access to these events is no given right and it's not even that important to reviewers - getting a car for a full review on the other hand is.. and who do you think provides the cars for most reviewers? There's also a little thing called judgement - if you have a little of it, you should be able to tell, if somebody is shilling for a product... and then you can just make up your own mind.

You're outta luck. I had a Wrangler. Either stuff the bits inside where they'll get damaged/stolen, or leave them at home and freeze/get wet/etc. Still glad they gave the option, though I wish they would have made it look more properly proportioned.

They make some of the coolest cars right now, period. Hellcat, Demon, Abarth, Pacifica and now the Gladiator

A regular Tacoma/Colorado/Ranger 4x4 will have difficulties with that trail (especially, if you look at the entire trail, not just the segment you highlighted). And the base versions will have no chance at all. Of course, the dedicated offroad versions of those trucks will indeed do this without too much trouble.

Offroad commentary and knowledge is not the SG specialty. I suppose he gets a little better with every chance he gives it, though.

@@dsugioaga They're driving the Rubicon though. If you compare that to the TRD Pro or ZR2 they would all be able to manage that trail with no problem. Even the base versions could handle it with proper tires and skill. The Gladiator is a beast for sure but it's not like Jeep re-invented the off-road pickup truck here.

​@Your Mums HITACHI Are you one of those people who post "hurr durr, my Civic can do that!" in Rubicon trail videos? It's always easy to judge offroad terrain from a video - when you're there, in person, it's much different. Besides, pickups suck offroad. Even the dedicated offroad versions are generally worse than dedicated offroad SUVs. @Rotchild: In general, I agree. That's what I wrote. Dedicated offroad pickups will get through this without much trouble. I also agree that skill has a great impact - but that's irrelevant for the evaluation of the offroad capabilities of a vehicle, because it's a variable that is solely based on the driver. The base Gladiator is more offroad-capable than a base Tacoma/Colorado/Ranger - in their respective offroad-trims the vehicles are probably closer together but I would assume the Rubicon still has a slight edge over the others. But of course that doesn't mean it's the better truck overall. But whatever, I don't really have a bone in this fight anyway, since I'm not interested in any of these trucks.

@Your Mums HITACHI That's a stretch. These trails are harder than they look on your screen. And I've seen Crosstrek reviews where the Crosstrek's X-Mode couldn't find traction, or couldn't use the engine's torque properly, to move forward over the rocks and/or up the inclines on trails like this. This is Forerunner/Raptor/Wrangler territory.

Indeed it would! Unfortunately though it will most likely be a 3000 plus dollar option, and will only be available on higher trim levels like the Rubicon. But we shall see right?

The only trouble, emissions regs have ruined diesels, they are just not as reliable as they were. I've always loved diesels but with all the crazy emissions systems and the failures that go with the complexity, took diesels off the map for me.

Better yet, put in the 5.7L Hemi. :)

@@andyw_ Me, for one. It's disfigured and ill-proportioned from the B-pillar back. I like the idea, but the execution a bit wonky (breakover angle, anyone?) and the looks are horrid.

Billy Hughes I agree. The Tacoma TRD Pro and the Colorado ZR2 wouldn’t have any trouble with that course.

That was my bad on my end. What the gladiator touts is “best in class, clearance, approach and departure angles. It also has the most armor underneath. The reason I prefer it to the Colorado is the airbags won’t deploy randomly while off roading and the taco while potentially more reliable. feels dated, gets worse Milage, tows less and honestly is less fun.
