2020 Mazda6 Signature | Still One of the BEST in Class?

The 2020 Mazda6 Signature enters this year with minimal changes even though the midsize sedan class continues to improve. The newest models are the Hyundai Sonata redesign, Kia K5 entering. the class, AWD given to the Camry and refreshments for 2021, Nissan's updated Altima for 2019, and the Honda Accord continues to be a well rounded option. Despite everything these other cars have to offer, the Mazda6 Signature still is a very premium offering that. has aged well in most regards. Although it may not be the most practical in the class, it still pleases in most areas that people will look for.

I just picked up a 2020 Mazda 6 Signature as a daily driver that would last me at least 10 years. I am very impressed with its vehicle. It is not perfect however it is perfect for me. The infotainment is a big downer for most however, I admire the simplicity and functionality of the design. The drive experience is outstanding. the engine and transmission is a perfect combination. I am a more mature driver and I appreciate the consistent allocation of torque and boost all throughout the powerband. the car being built and shipped from Japan sealed the deal for me. this car is not the fastest in 0-60 nor has the biggest interior among its competitors. However, this vehicle mitigates the turbo lag meaning there is power all throughout the range and not just on startup. Again, this vehicle is not perfect and not for anyone who spends a lot of time on tech and just floors the pedals until it redlines. This car is perfect for me and for anyone who appreciates simplicity, functionality, and minimalistic style.

I love my 'N/A 17.5 Mazda6 and my daughter just picked up the '19 Mazda CX-5 GTR with the turbo that suits her needs and wants right on the nose. My Mazda6 is the last year that the Touring Trim was available with the manual so I get some additional fun factor in my daily commute as well as family duties. For me, it has the looks, proven reliability, manual transmission, mpgs and most importantly handling that I was targeting with the Accord and a few Subarus as competitors. The Rear space and trunk are very usable and no trouble handling family and friends or extra cargo with a wide pass-through for larger boxes for home depot runs. Nice review and definitely recommend checking out a Mazda when competitively shopping.

Maybe not great in every aspect, but I think it’s at the top of the class. Easily the best looking midsize sedan. The Accord is ugly, the Altima looks like a cheap rental car, the Legacy and Passat are on the bland side, and the Camry maybe a bit overdone. On the inside it is definitely the nicest in class. Power is good, reliability is good, and value for the money is high. If I were in the market, it would be a toss between this and another Legacy. I think this is a much better looking car and has a nicer interior, but the Legacy wins in overall space, visibility, and maybe value.

The Mazda6 remains an appealing vehicle. Beautiful design inside and out. And while its performance doesn't match what might be expected from the specs (not as quick as the Accord 2.0L or the Camry V6) it's still peppy. Unfortunately, sales of almost the entire Mazda vehicle lineup are DISMAL and unlikely to improve in the near (or even midterm) future. The CX-9 is the slowest selling mainstream midsize 3 row crossover on the market, a place it has held since the current generation debuted in 2018. And the margin between the CX-9 and the next lowest selling vehicle has only gotten worse over time. (CX-9 sales for the first half of 2020 amounted to 13,000. The next slowest selling rival, the VW Atlas, registered nearly twice as many sales (25,000.) 2020 sales of the new generation Mazda3 (sedan plus hatch) are an unmitigated disaster, amounting to 16,00 units. Despite strong reviews, that's down 43% (!) compared to the first half of 2019. And the 2019 total annual sales were down to 51,000 units, 21% less than 2018. If Mazda can match the first half of 2020 figures for the rest of the year (highly doubtful given the economic climate), the annual sales of 32,000 will represent a 32% drop in sales for the entire year from the previous low. The new CX-30 is doing comparatively well with nearly 17,000 sales in the first half of 2020 but that's balanced to some extent by the virtual collapse of demand for the CX-3 to 4700 sales. Even the bright spot in the Mazda sales picture, the best selling CX-5, is down to 65,000 sales in 2020 compared to 74,000 in the first half of 2019. If Mazda can manage to match its performance in the second half of this year, a 17% decline in sales in the midst of COVID-19 and a near economic depression could arguably be a cause for celebration. Then there's the Mazda6. In the first half of 2020, Mazda managed a total 8085 sales in the US, a drop of 38% compared to the first half of 2019. And for the full 2019 calendar year the total was 21,424 down 30% from the 2018 sales of 31,000. Sales of all midsize sedans have been dropping for some years and no one should expect the Mazda6 to rival sales of the Camry, the Accord, or even the Altima but the Mazda6 has typically outsold the slow selling VW Passat. Not so far this year when the VW has sold over 10,000 Passats. KIA sold nearly five times as many Optimas and Hyundai nearly four times as many Sonatas as "6's." And each of those models is at least as long-in-the-tooth as the Mazda6. Mazda is in serious trouble in terms of sales. The brand remains popular with reviewers and internet fans, and is promising a slew of new generation models including the Mazda6. But while Mazda has a well deserved reputation for excellent, innovative engineering it has also earned a reputation for over-promising and under-delivering in terms of their production plans. (How many years did Mazda promise a diesel CX-5 before delivering it?) Bottom line? If you're a Mazda fan, and especially if you're a fan of the Mazd6, Mazda needs you to buy one! Simply sticking up for Mazda on the internet and voicing the virtues of the Mazda6 won't help. And while you're at it, you might want to take home a Mazda3 or a CX-9.

Stephen you obviously have excellent. knowledge about cars. What would your advice be regarding a purchase of the 2021 Mazda 6 or waiting for next years anticipated redesign? I am considering the 6, the CX5 or the Accord 2.0 touring as my next vehicle purchase. Any thoughts sir?
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 3 года назад
@@ewenmacdonald115 I suspect that 2022 will bring either a redesign or an abandonment of the Mazda6. Unfortunately, while Mazda has a well earned reputation for innovation and engineering they also have an equally well earned reputation for missing their promised schedules and over-promising and under-delivering. The Skyactiv-X engines released in some international markets in 2019 and promised for the summer of 2020 in the US are still without a firm release date with rumors pushing it out to 2022 or 2023. Then there's last year's introduction of the diesel CX-5. A model that had been promised for years and now discontinued in the US due to terrible sales. Given the ongoing softness of the midsize sedan marketplace I'm somewhat skeptical that Mazda is prepared to radically redesign the "6" for 2022 or 2023. Remember, they're the smallest mainstream automaker on the planet and don't have the option of spending vast sums on developing vehicles for market categories that are dwindling. The rumors I've seen suggest the replacement of the current engine with an inline six cylinder version but details (afaik) are sparse. Given the overall dismal sales of almost the entire Mazda lineup I wouldn't bet the farm on a new model. As for the current Mazda6, it's undeniably dated especially in terms of bells and whistles like the infotainment system. But "dated" doesn't necessarily equal substandard. Cars shouldn't be judged like women's fashions (imo). When I considered the Mazda6 (Signature) in late 2018 I liked it a lot though I ranked the Honda Accord Touring 2.0L somewhat above it on my personal checklist. Given the abysmal sales figures there may be some good deals to be had if you can find an upper trim "6" on a dealer lot. Needless to say, the Accord 2.0L Touring is a strong contender. When I compared it to the Mazda6 and current V6 Camry it topped each on my list. The engine is a detuned (and slightly modified) version of the awesome mill in the Civic Type R and it's quicker than the Mazda6 with what I felt was equally good handling. (YMMV). And while the Signature trim of "6" continues to generate accolades, I felt the Honda was about equal to it in terms of materials, fit, and finish and likely to be significantly more durable. I keep vehicles for 5-7 years so resale value isn't especially important to me, especially if I save money on an initial purchase. But if you replace your vehicle every 3 years or so the resale value of the Honda will dwarf the Mazda6. If the "6" goes away altogether the difference will be even greater. You might have to wait until the "6" becomes a collector's item to come close to making up the difference. The CX-5 literally the only vehicle in Mazda's lineup with anything approaching strong sales. Compared to other compact crossovers (but not to sedans) it handles well and with the same turbo 4 and transmission as the CX-9 and the Mazda6 it's a strong performer in its category. Its weaknesses are mainly in the interior space compared to other compact SUV's. Overall cargo space is 59.6 cubic ft. Honda claims the CR-V offers up to 75.8 cf. That is a MASSIVE difference. If you're considering a crossover for its utility and versatility there are several better choices than the CX-5. But if your needs don't bump up against the limited space of Mazda and you like its performance advantages, the CX-5 may be a good choice. If I were in the market today I'd be looking closely at the KIA K5 or the Hyundai Sonata, though I'd wait for the performance versions with the 2.5L turbo engine that's also the base engine of the new Genesis GV80 and the G80 as well as the optional engine in the new Sorento.

@@stephenhendricks103 thank you so much! The details and information you have given me is super helpful. As you suggest, there are quite a few factors to consider along with personal preferences. I will wait to see if, and to what degree, Honda refreshes the 2021 Accord before making a decision. I have seen absolutely nothing about it yet although I have heard it should be out before year end. I did test drive a CX 5 Signature last year. You are right about the cargo space. I liked most everything about it but it felt kinda claustrophobic in the cabin. I will also likely test drive a 2021 Mazda 6 and maybe even in the new Kuro edition (Canadian name) as it looks "cool" with the paint, red leather and some other details. Your points on this car are also well taken. A tough call all the way around for me. I am coming out of a 2014 Kia Forte SX so I may also check out the up-level engine of the K 5 when it comes to Canada. I have been pretty happy with the Forte, although coming previously from a Camry, I will say the durability and reliability has been so so in comparison. Thanks again for helping me and for sharing your time and expertise!

The current 6 is an outstanding choice and my pick over the competition. If you're willing to spend another $10k and wait 2 years the next 6 will be incredible but its going to take a while and the current car is already so good. The CX5 is the best choice imo if you're looking for this size of SUV so it really depends on what you're looking for. Im considering the exact same thing as well as Audi and Volvo and im going current Mazda 6 GTR/Sig. Wife might get a CX5 or Q5 to complement the 6 when we need to move stuff but I prefer sedans.

Accord 2.0t. is a bit faster and handles a bit better but is definitely not more reliable than a Mazda 6...read consumer reports. Accord has a better infotainment system/screen but not enough to matter for me. The 6 is FAR better looking though, has a very linear throttle response for smooth driving and is overall smoother to drive. Interior is better too with the exception of the infotainment/screen. Both are great choices and coming from a 13 Accord Sport ill take the current Mazda 6.

@@g__e__o Korean brands have all come a long way, but Mazda still builds a better overall package. Unquestionably gorgeous inside and outside. But unfortunately that’s the only pros I noticed because this has more cons than I thought - the touchscreen locks out when in drive. - small trunk and less rear seat space - the 360 camera overall is subpar. - I was expecting the Mazda6 to wow me in handling but it really didn’t. It felt just the same as other mid sizers I’ve driven.
