I prefer to have a ton of buttons than having all the options buried in the infotainment system. I hate having through dig through menus while I’m driving!
@@ponrixI’ve lived with multiple cars that had touch screen HVAC controls. If it “crashes” you reset the screen. Problem solved. It’s literally not even a problem
I just bought the 2018 Macan GTS Twin Turbo not only does it rock 0-60 less then 4.7 it drives like a dream cloud in "Granny Mode" It is so smooth like it drives like a super smooth Baby butts. I mean you end up wanting to drive further just to get a relaxing ride. Put it in Sport mode or Sport Plus and it purrrsss and burps and spits out serious belches from the rear exhaust!!! Hands down its Porsche there is no substitute!!!
I can confirm the front and rear control arms are directly off the Audi Q5. I just rebuilt a Q5 on my channel, and the rear lower control arm I bought used off a Macan S. As long as you match suspension options from both vehicles, they are identical other then spring stiffness.
Not correct, the Macan does not share a single spring and damping component that is relevant to driving performance with a Q5. Everything is unique. The axle components are the same though as explained in the video
@@computercrack Could it be a generational thing? When I was looking up the replacement parts for my 2015 Q5 the information I was given was that they were swappable. Unless I misunderstood what the parts guy meant by interchangeable or he was also mistaken 🤷♂️.
@@sbscars depends on what specific part you are talking about. All control arms should be swappable @front and rear axle and some of the suspension components like the damper fork. Damper, steel springs and air suspension are unique for sure (1. Gen Q5 didn't even have air suspension this was developed by Porsche first for this kind of middle size SUV). Also Macan offered a continually controlled damper (same like in the air spring) together with steel spring setup which the Q5 didn't have (and still doesn't have today I believe but I'm too lazy to look it up).

If I were in the market for a CRV/SUV this review would have made my decision for me. The technical, mechanical and emotional assessment culminating in his conclusions (along with 99.9% of all Mark's reviews) have no peers.
I definitely like your style. You're blunt, honest, and still keep it light. And putting cars on a lift for a different perspective is great. It's not something anyone else is really doing. Keep up the excellent reviews.

Um... that’s not really true. Despite people claiming things such as: “Manufactures only make SUVs to fund their sports/supercars” is untrue. Firstly, the margins Porsche makes on their supercars/sports cars is crazy. You spend $80,000+ on a base level Porsche car with nothing in it. They incentivize you to equip your car with options. Alright, now back to the main point. While the SUVs saved the Porsche company itself, they don’t dump most of their money into supercars/sports cars with revenue collected from SUVs. They put it back into the SUV’s research and development for their next generation. Companies aren’t stupid. They know SUVs sell. If they dump most of their RND budget building supercars/sports cars, sure, they’ll boost their reputation-but they’ll take a huge hit in sales when the competition starts coming out with nicer SUV’s and Porsche would have nothing to compete with in that market segment.

Originally wasn’t necessarily a fan of your channel, I passed over your videos although sometimes skipping through your videos. I did however recently give your Ford Explorer a full watch and was very impressed because it mimicked my impressions I got from multiple ford products recently yet in a much more in depth way. Definitely a channel for people who truly care about more than just 0-60 and basic driving dynamics. Keep up the good work

@@aiGeis Agree on leasing being expensive. It makes sense for a couple of scenarios: (i) you are willing - and can afford - to pay extra to drive a new car constantly; (ii) you are thinking of a BMW/Merc/VW or (iii) you are planning to die in 3 years. So yes, sometimes leasing is a good option.
I bought a 2018 CPO for $40k with 3800 miles. CPO gives you a total of 7 years warranty with the last two years unlimited mileage. It’s better warranty and cheaper than leasing one.
aiGeis leasing is actually quite cheap, my mom Is driving a 60k Mercedes suv for $630 for 30 months. She gets to swap the car 6 months earlier for no charge and doesn’t have to worry about anything. Oil changes included, tires , rotations, etc etc. we’ve had a great experience with the service so far too. Of course the cars are never yours but it makes sense if you just like having the newest vehicle for a lot less.
Just try this one day: Find a 20-year-old Toyota or Lexus, and drive it around for the next 5 years with a maintenance budget of no more than what you PAID for that car (you do all of the 'fluid' changes yourself). You will find that to be no problem. Now try doing the same with an Audi, Mercedes, or BMW. After 2 to 3 years, your maintenance/repair budget will be gone.
I have a 2020 Macan S without the chrono package and air suspension, but well equipped otherwise. Your review is spot on per my own experiences after 5000 miles of ownership. It is a joy to drive and the quality of assembly and attention to detail is worth the additional cost if you are the type of driver/owner that can appreciate those differences. Keep up the great work, your reviews are among the best in my opinion.
The engine isn't unique to this car. It's the EA839 found in the S4/S5/SQ5 (and also in the base Cayenne/Panamera but detuned). Last gen's TT V6 was unique to the Macan. At 14:33 you can see that the right side of the under-hood air outlet is blocked off - that's because this engine only has 1 intake, whereas the old TT unit had 2. Also, it's always had a coasting mode.

@@jleeh76 what made you decide to go with Porsche? I'm trying to decide between the RSQ3, X3 m40i and the Macan GTS. The Porsche is ~$30-40k AUD more than the competition, is slower, is less practical (e.g. smaller boot), no android auto, no wireless charging, no reclining rear seats and have to pay extra for sports chrono (seriously!?). And the list goes on. Besides being able to say I drive a Porsche, I'm struggling to understand how they're justifying the huge price difference with their competition.
I've been waiting so long for your review of the Macan. Agree on all points. Have gotten Macan, Macan S or Cayenne loaners whenever my car needs a service. What stood out for me vs. other S/CUVs are 1) steering 2) brakes 3) suspension control, 4) quiet. Surprised to find that the base 4 cyl, despite being slow and sounding like aToyota Corolla, was more fun to drive around town. The lightness helped steering and playfulness. But either was superior to the previous Cayenne. Would love to hear your thoughts on the current Cayenne.
I find it disappointing that they basically gave the same 4 cylinder as from the Q5, but you might be right. I have a X5 40i but the X3 30i I test drove was definitely more engaging in town, despite being slower. I think Porsche is the only brand that beats BMW in terms of driving dynamics in their SUV line up. Q5's are not impressive at all. It's not as quiet as a GLC, and doesn't have the combination of fineness and performance from the X3. Macan however is almost universally agreed as the best handling small SUV, and is obvious that Porsche did a lot of work on this car.
Ive had the 2015 Macan S for 3 years now. It's hands down my favorite car I've ever owned. Because of how simple the button become and the easy steering wheel controls. I bought this car firstly because the seat coolers worked so well! No other car that had seat cooler came close to the macan. It's just really well put together and I will miss her because I had to put her up for sale recently due to a baby coming. But I loved how this car did everything so well. But I do believe porsche did not push the bar forward with the new generation. It looks worse than previous gen and not enough was done to interior to call it a new model. This was the facelift it needed in 2018, not the new model.

The back seats are not very big. You need space to fit the baby seat. Also going to be hard on your back lifting the kid into that back seat. So traded for a mercedes e450 wagon.

Once again a superb review guys TY. I have a 2018 Macan Turbo and you captured it. The Turbo's extra power is transformational btw versus the S. Feels more like a GT car or very high end sports sedan. Great for long trips. Back seat is fine as long as you are not LARGE. You feel the Porsche DNA in how it puts the power down coming out of a turn. It squats and shoots forward like my 993. Porsche style great brakes and steering, but very quiet and relaxing at high speeds. BTW.. on the 2018 I think if u got Burmeister sound system you lost the collapsible spare tire and got a can of goo.
@@lethalpenguin61 Actually, if you go with a CPO, its quite a value. Less than the Discover Sport I traded, and even lower insurance. This review is pretty spot on, and the vehicle is a pretty fantastic compliment to my Boxster S. Different strokes.

Porsche did a superb job of integrating the infotainment screen into the dashboard on this, instead of having one that sticks out like a sore thumb like in most other recent cars.
Ive driven this exact spec of the Macan with the Chronopack and for the power and type of vechile it is, it drives insanely good. It does comfort, sport and practicallity better than 95% of the competition.
Sergey No, like a properly sorted RWD car. Golf R is nose-heavy and runs a FWD Haldex system so it's really just a faster RAV4. Go drive a Macan, Porsche actually made it into something special.

The best review of Macan I've seen. The important is to spec the car to your needs. The basic 2 litre riding on the steel suspension is a very different car to S or even the new GTS on the air suspension.
Coming from a 2018 Macan GTS I can safely say it is a very good all around car. Fun when you want it to be but extremely refined and comfortable for the commute. It’s very apparent to me why Porsche sells so many of these. Thanks for the review!
I owned a 17 Macan S and without the air suspension and would constantly tell people it was easily the best suspension on a car under $100k. I'm pretty much a sports car guy, but I have to also begrudgingly admit that the Macan was actually a pretty special car. I'm not gonna trade my 964 for it anytime soon, because I am fortunate enough to have a more comfortable car for family stuff and road trips. But, if I had to have one car to do it all... the Macan is just about unmatched.
Any road faring car is a bad place to start if you're building a true sports car. Ok let's get that out of the way. That being said, the only true advantage a sedan/coupe/hatch back... basically anything that is lower to the ground, has over a crossover/sav/suv is the fact that it has a lower center mass. I'm tired of people bashing crossovers as if some how we have defiled the true nature of an automobile. Cars are man made. They're not some rare form of raw material found in nature. The purest form factor of a car is not the sedan. Rather, it's anything you can build to provide for the needs of the people. Simple. If people want to bemoan the fact that crossovers are taking over the car market, think about what I just said. If you want to buy a sports car, go buy a Ferrari or something that competes with it. But if you want to buy a "sports" sedan, you ought to be more open minded about crossovers too because for most driving situations, you're not going to be coming around a corner so fast that a sedan will have a marked advantage over a crossover. You just won't. Never. You'll never be driving like that on the roads. If you are the type of person to ACTUALLY track your car, then go buy a kit car. If your idea of a sports car is to be able to go fast on occasion, MAYBE track your car once in a while, and still retain all the creature comforts of a modern vehicle? Then your so called "sports" sedan is not much better of a sports vehicle than a sport suv. It's just not. Crossovers have not defiled anything. It's made the modern car better with few compromises that does not affect the end user's experience.
Dam...you sold me on the 2019 Acura RDX. We chose the RDX over the Macan at the time (it was...uh..complicated lol). I’ve always loved the Macan since it first came out. And my wife and I are perfectly happy with the RDX. But here you go again SG, turning my automotive lust upside down.
Ignoring money, I think it's a beautiful crossover. I would never buy one unless I had heaps of money to throw away. But we're car enthusiasts. We want cars that make us feel a certain way, and this ain't it. That's okay. It allows Porsche to make the cars we like.
I know it's a PITA for Turbowski to make it to Shoppee 2.0 these days but I miss seeing him shit on everything. Gotta get something Ultra Premium in there to coax him down.
I like Porsche cars and SUVs. For the reasons you mentioned in your video, Quality. They focus on giving their buyers a quality product. A quick story. I remember the first time I saw a Macan was at a gas station. The person driving it was a young man in High School. Of course I thought his parents bought it for him but I was wrong. Turns out he had a successful online store and was able to buy the Macan for himself. Very cool what can happen if someone is given a good example by their family. (:
In all the Porsche reviews I am surprised by the complaint that the steering wheel heat button is “hidden” on the steering wheel. Once you know it’s there, it’s always easy to find. Many other car’s steering wheel heat button is in plain sight somewhere on the dash among a forest of other buttons, forcing you to take your eye off the road to find it. I always can find my hidden button because it’s in the most convenient location ever.
It will be a hybrid at most. Porsche just came out with the Taycan and i think Porsche want to see how the sales are on that before they commit to a full EV on Macan. They just put a hybrid motor on the 2020 Cayenne.
These are so popular nowadays, at least around me, that they just don't make an impression on me anymore. They just blend among the sea of premium crossovers. I really have to take a moment to think, that's a Porsche. And yet, when I see a cayman or a 911, I'm always snapping my neck. It's so weird to see how even a brand like Porsche can be overlooked if they are making the same thing everyone else does (obviously in terms of quality and driving dynamics, they're in the upper echelon but you get the point).
Would the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio be a fair competitor to the Macan S or maybe even the GTS? I see no comparisons between these two models and yet they are both touted as the best Sports CUV's on the market. With the Stelvio usually edging out the Macan in regards to the purist driving dynamics. Stay classy my friends.
Stelvio QV goes against Macan turbo. QV is faster but more tiring as daily. Macan will be more comfortable and luxurious plus best looks imo. X3 M40i is easiest to modify well over 400hp and most reliable. The m40i uses a much simpler inline 6 single turbo vs Macan stelvio having v6 and 2 turbo == more maintenance.
I have a Cayenne S that is used and licensed as an emergency vehicle, and in the winter with studded tires, it gets to emergencies on steep hills that other vehicles more commonly used (fire trucks, Tahoe's, pickups, etc) can't get to, even with tire chains. Precisely one of the reasons why I bought that car, the four-wheel-drive system is excellent.
Very well thought out review... I would buy it for my wife and I. Size is just right for an almost empty nesters like us. It would be a very good replacement for my wife's 2004 Honda Odyssey! Gotta have winter tires for the winter. That's for sure! Keep doing what you're doing, Guys!..
Slammed my Macan S down low w a KW coilover and $1,200 cobb tune. Now it's a 4 second little street hot hatch Eater. Love my Macan. Our Boxster S is my weekend car and love love love them both. Thank you Porsche 🎉
Until the plastic pumps and other stuff start to chip off and break after a few years, or the electronics start to fail - reliability of german cars isn't rated very high, and the parts are expensive. Then when it fails the german over-engineering starts to show since fixing a minor leak sometimes means you need to get the whole engine out (so it costs even more to repair), and you need special tools to repair them, to boot. Sometimes the engines have bulit-in flaws, like the timing chain problems in BMW's N20 in 2012-2015 320i & 328i (i was looking to buy one, but eventually I figured it's not worth the hassle). It's no coincidence that a BMW will lose 50% of its value in the first 2 years, Audis and Mercedeses depreciate a lot, too (you'll even save a lot of money on leasing them). Porsches hold their value well, but sharing the architecture with the other VW brands doesn't bode well for reliability. Macan seems like a great car, but i personally don't regard german cars as 'most solid cars'. Luxury? sure. Performance? sure. Best automatic gearboxes? sure. Attention to detail? sure. But solid/realiable? not so much.

@@charlesdr1981 Ok, you were talking about build quality, which is definitely something that the german cars can boast. That said, I've driven in a less than 8 y.o. E class of my boss recently, and the paint from the buttons on the steering wheel has almost completely peeled off, so it's not worlds apart from other manufacturers. I've heard complaints about rattles and squeaks in a 3 y.o. BMW 3 series, as well. Porsche is a luxury brand, and as such it's been known for top notch quality and excellent handling/performance, but someone really cheapened out on this macan's interior. Specking a porsche like this should be considered a crime.
I've been in macans a few times and while it absolutely drives great in every way, there's no getting around the fact that the back seat head room is not designed to accommodate people 5'11 and taller. This is an empty nest mobile.
That is totally fine as long as people understand what they're getting. I have a macan s.. No kids, rarely need to bring a third or fourth person anywhere. I took the all leather interior and it's absolutely perfect for me. It gives me more storage than my cayman and it drives like a good sports car and better than 90% of cars out there. It makes an enthusiast that loves driving actually want to drive a crossover/SUV.. Which very few vehicles in that category do.

Great Review. I never took this car seriously, (I had my mind set on Cayenne) Until I bought one. Driven it for a month now and have totally changed my mind. This car is not trying to be like anything else on the market. It's not blistering fast, (But definitely fast enough) it's not a super car, but it is practical, and an absolutely wonderful car to drive daily. It is beautifully Porsche if you give it a chance.
Hood will cost you $1,700 plus a paint job (in case you’re still interested). Plus you’d have to wait for delivery)) I learned it the hard way, ha-ha, i.e. that’s what the dealer charged me to replace it after a fender-bender))
I was trying to buy a used Macan, but the maintenance costs scared me away. 40k services is over $2000, 60k service is $4000-5000. Thesr are not normal cars.

Which is 25 percent higher, proportionately, Than the Macan’s oil-change cost. 🤔)
Coco Jumbo - Yes- it Can Be That Complicated. Porsche has been known to require complete Engine removal in order to reach and change a fan belt or alternator!! (Because they crammed those parts into a corner and behind the engine but underneath the battery 🔋 etc)
As much as I am not a big fan of crossover/SUVs, I really like the Macan especially the GTS and Turbo It makes a good family car for Porsche enthusiasts
I was considering one of these but the back seat is tiny, rear hatch space is lacking and the $500 dollar oil change at dealerships is ridiculous. Great video as always mr. geeseman
MixingGBP exactly if I was to get a Porsche it would specifically be a sports car...cayman/boxster or hopefully one day an 911. I’m okay with a comfortable Toyota suv that could do most of what this can do without the performance aspect. Guess this is aiming for a persons that wants both somewhat practical with some sporty driving. I rather have them separated with two different vehicles.
