2020 Silverado 1500 Duramax - 1st Check Engine Light (Part 2 of ??)

2020 Chevrolet Silverado with 3.0l Duramax Diesel threw it's first check engine light just over a week ago. I'm continuing to understand why this happened and how to get home safety if it happens on a long trip... As some of you may know the DEF system is not something that should be cracked open unless you are really sure there is a problem. Any contamination of the system will cause really big long term issues so I don't take having the truck service by someone else very lightly. I go over the fact that the CEL is now gone after clearing the code and even the history code is gone after at least 8 restarts.
This is going to be a series of videos now. I expect to have 1 more when the fault is captured and 1 more "IF" I take it to the service center.

My 2020 at 41,000 recently threw at Service Exhaust 175 miles warning 500 miles from home in St George Utah. I pulled into the dealer and they plugged it in and ended up re flashing the ECM. I continued onto Moab and it threw the code again (ambient temp 70 deg F) Started it again the following morning and CEL cleared until later in the day going into Denver. Took it to the dealer and they found a bad NoX sensor, a bad EGR valve and a faulty connector. In all I was stranded for five days waiting for the parts and labor. These sensors are very difficult to access at the back of the motor under the dash. All covered under warranty but I have the same concerns about it happening when I am not lucky enough to be close to a dealer. Great vids Chad

Had this same issue with our 2020 LM2 last April. Got it into the dealership and was told that there had been a recall on the DEF tank heater system. Unfortunately the entire DEF tank system had to be replaced and those were in short supply at the time so it was a lengthy wait. Best of luck to you.

looking forward to additional monitoring of this issue. i am leaning towards a software glitch vs sensor failure this soon. As these vehicles continue to become so computerized it seems to be the direction we are heading is reboot will fix many problems like your actual computer. That isn’t my preference I prefer diagnosing and fixing like you obviously do.

I might agree with your idea that it's a bandwidth issue. I was playing with Torque Pro and the MXlink two days ago then happened to log into the "MyGMC" app and noticed it was giving me a warning under the "diagnostic" tab. It said "an attached device may be preventing your vehicles diagnostic test from completing". I think this lends legitimacy to your thoughts. Also, I don't leave the MXlink plugged in unless I'm in the vehicle. Do you leave yours connected all the time? I do enjoy the Torque Pro app....but am seriously considering the Banks iDash.

Hi Chad, last week the dealer replaced the nox sensor and re-set the engine light. I was good for about a week. Today, not only did the engine light return but I was unable to start the engine, wouldn't turn over. Full battery. The situation seems to be that the truck was parked on a very steep driveway incline (very steep). I wondered if the engine wasn't getting fuel because of the steep incline. I turned on the ignition, rolled the truck (in neutral) down to level ground and tried again, the egine started! Come to think of it, last week or two weeks ago when the engine light came on the first time, I was on a very steep incline too. Is this a thing? Do steep hills cause a fuel sensor malfunction or a fuel starvation problem? (fyi, both times had a full tank of fuel). Any wisdom would be welcome, thanks.....Ken

Not sure on this new engine but on the 6.6 dura Max there are 3 heather elements in the tank! Bottom line dealers will just replace the wholes unit , I did a few used to work at gmc If you try to adapt your heather elements with the scanner. If all the element don’t complete the cycle , that check engine light will not go away

If I was to bet you have an intermittent electrical issue due to the corrosive nature of def fluid. Eventually I'd bet you have to replace the pump that houses the def heater. Until it completely fails, a dealer probably won't replace anything.

Hello, I'm thinkin of buying this same Chevy Silverado Duramax 3.0. I'm new diesel. I do 75% city driving and 25% highway, can I expect 20mpg with stop and go/traffic? Or is it much less given all the city driving? Also, If i drive back from work (35 miles) and the engine goes into "Regen" mode, do I need to just stay in vehicle while "regen" -ing? Or keep driving it? Also, I visit customers and can idle my vehicle a fair bit. Is idling bad for this engine? Thanks.

I was thinking about buying a diesel and driving it for 2 years then getting then getting the Hybrid F150. I never had a truck before so wanted to get the full experience but this concerns me. And maybe I should try a different diesel or avoid it all together? HD trucks are too big for my needs... maybe a midsize Canyon/Colorado Diesel?
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 3 года назад
Aaron, Owning a diesel does come with a set of different opportunities. The emissions systems on all diesel engines are very similar so it won't matter if you go with a GM/Ford/Ram they all could have similar issues. Depending on if you live in the north or farther to the south some of these items might not ever show up. My testing has shown that if the temperature is always above 36F then this heater will never come on and you would never see this message. I had a Colorado 2.8 Duramax and really enjoyed it, great MPG and can tow... As for the Hybrid F150, I don't see the point of that combination, not very good MPG on the highway and only a little better in the City if you can get it. Towing the MPG is going to suck. I would suggest you get the Chevrolet with the Duramax, awesome MPG on the Highway, good city MPG and really good MPG while towing too... Thanks for the questions and for watching, stay tuned...

Hi Chad, FYI, after I emailed you my repair order for my new truck CEL I found this GM TECHLINK article dated Feb. 10, 2021 that sounds like my truck's issue. The title is "Faulty Emission Reduction Fluid Tank Heater" hope this may help you as well as others with the LM2! Ralph Reynolds
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 3 года назад
Ralph, Thank you so much for the information on the TECHLINK article. My DEF heater has not failed again since this video was shot but in the TECHLINK it stated that the tank needed to be more than 50% full, EFILive says it's ~54% full... I'm going to go and fill up the tank today and see if my problem is the leaking/short or if there is something else going on. Thanks again for the heads up and for watching. I really appreciate it.

I have had DEF related CEL(s) since new, I now have ~4K miles and have had at least 4 CEL at the dealership, they just replaced the following parts: 84914535 tank, 84620945 harness, 84714454 controller, and 3 1/2 gallons of DEF fluid. My issues began when new from the factory when the same dealer said that the DEF pump connector pins were wired wrong! I hope this resolves my DEF problems as I plan on some long road trips this summer and I really want to enjoy the truck but I'm losing all hope of it being repaired correctly, which is a shame because I love the drivetrain of this truck.

Ralph, thanks for the information. The more I think about this critical emissions system I would be willing to pay an extra $500 to have some redundant parts so that if one fails a 2nd one can take over till you get time to get it fixed. Things like the heater, pump and even the injector.. If you don't mind, keep me posted if that did fix your issues.

Ken, sorry to hear about your check engine light. I really can't say why it might be coming on, there are probably 1000 or more reasons why. Mine never came back. I still haven't found the PID values for those 2 heaters in the tank but I did buy some more tools to evaluate the CAN bus and now that my truck is almost out of the 36k warranty it's going to open season on debugging these things. Did you have the message when the fluid temperature was over 45F? If so then it sounds like a wiring issue. My heaters don't come on unless we are kinda cold so all spring/summer it has been good and the fall has been pretty warm so far.

@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 2 года назад
@Kenn A. Sorry to hear about your check engine light on such a new vehicle. The dealership should be able to get you fixed up but if it were my truck I would try to put a few more miles on it before I would take it in. Get it out on the highway and up to temperature for at least 15-20 minutes to see if the NOx #2 sensor is really working or not. The whole system must be in perfect condition or the EPA, under the current rules, requires that we get it fixed within 175miles or so.... That is way too aggressive in my opinion but the OEMs are required to follow the rules and we as truck owners need to push back on the EPA to make the rules more reasonable. I've had a couple of issues lately and all I wanted to do was just finish my trip without having to rent a truck and go back 2 weeks later to pick it up...... More on that to come. Please keep me posted on what you find out.

Sorry to hear about that code. A couple of questions, has it been below freezing lately? How full is you DEF tank? One simple thing to do would be to fill up the DEF tank so it is 100% full and drive the truck for 8-10 miles to see if the light goes away. The EPA has really limited our use of the truck/engine if there is even a slight chance the engine won't be 100% clean. It's really been bugging me lately. Way too much interference from our government, IMO

It was about 17 degrees down here in Ohio when this light came one. The def tank was filled about 100-200 miles ago, still showing full on the indicator. @CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 2 года назад
I hate to say that they probably won't be able to find a problem when you bring it in. There is a really good chance that there was just a small disruption in the flow of DEF to the injector, possibly frozen. DEF isn't supposed to freeze till 11F but that is if it's well mixed. Where do you buy your DEF? Old DEF is more likely to cause issues. DEF in the 2.5 gal jugs have date codes on them and you want to make sure it's as new as possible, 1 year is the oldest you would ever want to buy. I use a lot towing and buy it from a truck stop pump so it never very old. Let me know how it goes if you don't mind.
