2020 Subaru Legacy Takes an Upscale Turn | MotorWeek Road Test

If Subaru were to have a legacy, other than this 2020 Legacy sedan of course; it would be, making all-wheel-drive standard in the late 1990s. And for many years, the Legacy was your only mass-market choice if you wanted a 4- door with all-wheel-drive.
That's no longer the case and this new Legacy needs to offer a lot more than just 4-wheel traction to stay competitive.

Super comfortable ride with decent power. Update now allows you to turn off start stop feature on main screen. You get so much for your money and is very affordable.

Subarus are always criticized for their bland styling , but as the years go by they still look good , as other more " modern " looking cars look outdated .

I think theres a difference between bold styling that might not hold up over time and bland styling that remains bland. A lot of Subarus look straight out of 2011. They're good cars but theyll never be head turners.

I miss the 03'-09' Legacies. It was still a family sedan, but if you were lucky enough to get a 2.5GT spec.B it felt like a proper sports car.

I laughed when this dumb yank said that legacys were never known for their handling. The spec B is planted af. The 6 speed out of the STI is something I doubt we'll see again too

Actually, the 2.4L turbo-4 in the current Legacy and Outback makes more torque than the older Legacy GT, horsepower is similar. Unfortunately, they only come in the CVT that driver enthusiasts dread.

Ironically when they go electric, they will have fewer electronic systems. Engine management has electronics in the cooling system, oiling system, fuel delivery, ignition, emissions system, intake air and exhaust. All of these have to work or the engine doesnt run. Electric cars just have to send power to the motor and maybe run a small cooling system. They will also just have 1 fixed gear and get rid of that awful and unreliable CVT, which is run by yet another electronic system.

Agree. Must be a marketing buzz word. They seem to say that all the time with each new generation. They are now in the hundreds of % stiffer.

Should mean less rattles, and test show that it does have fewer rattles off of the assembly line. It is the simpler way to understand it (although it does mean more).

Lots to dislike here. Auto start/stop, mandatory CVT, mandatory eyesight, electronic parking brake, and touchscreen based HVAC controls. I’ll keep my 1999 Legacy GT thank you.

I work at a Subaru dealership and the new Legacy is selling....slowly. I really think Subaru should've gone a bit less conservative with this redesign. The redesign of the Outback works because it's an Outback. People like the fact that it didn't change much. For the Legacy, they needed to do more. The XT trim will chop off 2 seconds from that 0-60, FYI, if that matters to the buyer. It's a punchy engine.

I have a 2012 Legacy 2.5i Premium w/6MT. Have had a new Legacy as a loaner when mine was in for recalls. I will say, the new interior is A LOT nicer. The materials, fit, and finish are noticeably better. But the CVT does, and always will, suck.

I was looking for a car. My Mom cannot get into or out of my Jeep. I looked at many cars, but none really caught my eye. I never even gave any thought to a Subaru. A friend suggested we check out where she bought her Crosstrek. I test-drove a Crosstrek, Forester, Outback, and lastly the Legacy. I admit that none of the vehicles interested me. I walked past the Legacy three times. I finally asked for the key so I can give that a test drive and a fair shake since I gave the others a chance. We went to my friend's parent's house and I had them try getting into and out of the car. They did so with ease, and the father is 6 feet tall and he was like this is very roomy, very comfortable, and the trunk fits a transport chair, a walker, and the rolling walker with a seat. On the drive back I decided to research this vehicle and I decided to buy it. After some negotiating, I have the car and I love it. The touch screen is nice, but there are way too many things that can cause driver distraction. I am used to most of the functions now and it is no big deal.

I had a previous generation legacy. Nice smooth riding car but totally boring. The turbo makes this more interesting but starting at 35k with that option is too expensive.

@@petermello55 i know several of my friends who have a family with kids. They had to do away with their "sports cars" because such is life. They go for these bigger fast cars because they're subtle incognito (to the wife/gf), practical (for groceries and hauling the family around) and more importantly, fast when they want it too. When the kids are not around this is the father's toy.

8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 speed automatic transmisions are expensive to develop especially for small cars that have no profit. Enter the CVT. 1 unit that can be adjusted and revised electronically across different products. Cheaper. The Japanese and Asian car brands have been using CVTs in their home markets for well over 2 decades, so moving to CVTs across the board helps reduce how many versions of 1 car the automaker manufactures. Cheaper. That's the theme, cheaper.

Cheap to manufacturer and cannot be service so have to buy a brand new one after the CVT is damage, $5K+. Gas mileage is improved 1-2 mpg too.

I was considering purchasing a new Subaru Impreza. The reason it is no longer considered, is because of the weak 2.0 engine. I own a 2018 Impreza 5 door. My only complaint, is the weak engine. I wish Subaru would discontinue the 2.0. Replace it with the 2.5. The 2.5 gives,another 30 horses and same mpg. Now, we are considering the Legacy. I will stay true to Subaru. I also own a,2020 Forester Premium level. It is a great vehicle. I just need another new car. Looks like I need to settle on the legacy.

I own an 06 Legacy GT (my 3rd) . This 2020 with the available XT model fails by offering only a CVT and no performance styling cues (other than exhaust pipes) to indicate it's anything but a mundane version. At LEAST put a functional hood scoop to give it some sporting looks.

They aren't going to do that on the Touring or Limited Luxury trims... If they would just do that with the Sport (they don't even have to call it a GT), drop the turbo in it, and some better bumpers it would be fine. Unfortunately, I don't see how anything but a regular lip spoiler would do anything for this car, proportions just wouldn't work. 05-09 were the best looking Legacy years, and had the proportions/style to pull off a deck spoiler. They're going to have to do something, Toyota now has a performance Camry TRD for crying out loud. I had an 09 Legacy 2.5 Special Edition that I loved, but wasn't putting 5 grand into maintenance into it 18 months in from things the previous owner hadn't done. I just traded out of a 16 2.5 Limited into a 19 Forester Sport now that I'm leasing and I like it, the seats are more comfortable instead of being too wide and laterally unsupportive compared to the Legacy, I actually feel the bolstering, and I loved that with my 15 Fusion and the 09 Legacy.

That 8.3 seconds 0-60 mph is pretty optimistic. Other testers have shown it takes between 8.6 and 9.0 seconds for that speed, the slowest in the segment (Camry can do it in 7.9 seconds with the standard four). For short ramps on the Merritt Parkway in CT that won't work - you are stuck with the turbo.

@@johnmpifer Still own my 2013 Legacy with the H6 engine and 0-60 about 7.5 seconds - enough to merge on the Merritt Parkway which is like a drag strip with the short ramps.

@@johnmpifer I am not sure what you looking for. A 2013 V6 Camry makes 268 hp. The 2013 Legacy makes 257 hp. That is only 11 hp difference. It is not a performance car - neither is the Toyota. It is for people like me who need enough acceleration to merge onto a crowded road with a short on ramp - and it does that well. If you are looking for more in an old 2013 model get a Camaro V6 that makes 320 hp.

I can't believe this is the same car that kicked off Subaru's rallying career, what a snooze fest. Manufacturers should really create new makes rather than ruining the cars we've grown to love and respect, in the name of sales taking a dump on what the car stood for. I would rather a car die off that's how you make a future classic unlike watering it down to utter nothingness😤😤😤😡😡😡😡😡

@@bwxmoto Actually, in many respects, he's not wrong... Not only are CVT's sluggish off the line, prone to drone when cruising, and generally soul-sucking to drive. But they're also proving to be very failure prone (with even Toyota suffering widespread faults), and quite expensive to fix... Seems an awful lot to sacrifice for a couple extra MPG's.

That’s with the base engine. If you had the 2.4 turbo-4 XT, 0-60 acceleration would be at the low to mid six second range.

Subaru owner here. This puppy looks bland. 2015-19 actually looks better.

@@worrywart1311 what an asshole thing to say. Unfortunately CVTs are necessary to eek out the few mpg of diminishing returns required by government mandates. Otherwise they are absolute pieces of shit. They are unreliable, can't handle excess loads and are expensive to fix. If they would offer a manual and conventional automatic transmissions for people who care about reliability, they could still offer the CVT for the people dumb enough to buy them when given other options.

The inside is very nice. The outside is ugly. They put some ugly ass wheels on that car. There is too much competition in this segment now. Look at the new styling of the Korean cars. Very modern. The CVT's are warrantied till 100k. So keep it till then and sell it.

The Koreans are very modern, but also very faddish. In ten years they'll be out of style while the more plain Legacy will still look fine.
