How to startup and conduct the first 2 hours of break-in on the 2020 Suzuki DF2.5s portable outboard motor. In my case I'm using a make shift engine stand made from 1/2 inch metal pipe, and a small garbage can sitting on top of an empty kitty litter bucket. In this video I will quickly walk through the engine's starting procedure, including a quick refueling, and how to put the motor into forward gear.

Just going through the same process with mine. A couple of things I noted - lots of smoke on initial start up as I guess there is a lot of oil in the cylinder from when it was manufactured. Also, I found it very difficult to tilt - this was due to the bolt being over tightened which the motor pivots on. I slackened it off a bit and it was fine.

Check to see if there is a fuel filter, if there isn't, add an inline filter!

Important, please note: it’s not as clearly stated as it should be, but if you read the manual carefully Suzuki says to idle out of gear for 5 minutes to warm up the engine, then run 15 minutes in gear at idle or lowest in gear speed possible. You seem to be idling the engine for 20 minutes, which is incorrect according to the July 2020 version of the DF2.5 manual.

Most people don’t put on there stop lanyard when your on the water you should always have it attached to you

correct, it is known as a kill cord and it cuts the engine if you go overboard (if its attached to you), as a powerboat instructor I strongly recommend people use the kill cord.

Run it in a lake with some very short full throttle runs if you want the ring to seat properly.

Thanks Mike, I have a new inflatable tender on the way, I'll give that a try.

Gospel ! Worst thing you can do is let it idle away for hours on end

You definitely need load on a motor for proper break in and to seat the rings. When running in a smallish tub you will never get any load because the water cavitates and removes load from the gears and motor itself. If as here you don't even have the motor in gear for most of the time, how are you breaking in the drive gears? that also part of the process. This doesn't remotely equate to an engine break in.

Yup, warm up good and load her up with short wot pulls.

Good morning, I recently purchased a new DF2.5 Suzuki outboard motor. My (break-in) has been going well, the only problem I,m having is getiing the motor to tilt, it's in the (unlocked/forward position) won't budge. If you can provide any feedback I'd be grateful,Thanks.
@SebastianOats
@SebastianOats 3 года назад
If by unlocked forward position, does that mean your propeller would hypothetically be in the water and ready to propel the boat forward? Or do you mean the motor has been tilted with the propeller blades up out of the water? If it won't budge from the propeller in the water position, my guess is that the urethane holster that the mid-section snaps into is ungreased and the friction is preventing you from tilting up. In which case I would think you should be able to pop it free with a firm sharp tug on the mid-section (make sure you have the motor firmly mounted to a stand or boat before attempting to perform the tilt). If your motor won't budge from the upward position, then the tilt lock is likely engaged, and to remedy this you should be able to pull it (the motor) further up and then use a spare hand to disengage the tilt lock, so that you can lower the motor back into operating position. Hope this helps.

What happens if the oil indicator shows oil to the top?
@SebastianOats
@SebastianOats Год назад
You would have to ask Suzuki that question, they would have ran all kinds product testing that hit on these types of scenarios. In general machines have tolerances that need to be followed, like not under-filling or over-filling the oil, maximum performance and longevity of the machine would require following such tolerances. So if it was me, I'd aim to be very close to the target fill indicator.

You didn't have any break in time ahead of this vid? You ran in choke mode about 5 seconds. My konks out when I disengage choke, even after 45 seconds in choke mode
@SebastianOats
@SebastianOats 3 года назад
Hello Paul, If I recall correct, I had ran once or twice prior to this video (probably 10 - 15 minutes in each session), but even so my situation with the choke was consistent. The engine only needed it for 10 seconds or less and had no issues smoothly transitioning to zero choke. Any chance you might be using older gasoline?

How long does the fuel last on the water?
@SebastianOats
@SebastianOats 2 года назад
Hello Alex, I want to say I've gotten two hours of drive time (most of that at lower RPM), but I'll try to see if I can get you a more precise figure next time I go out (planning on September). Subjectively speaking, using this motor with my Dinghy, the motor seems very fuel efficient.

You have to unscrew the nut for the tilt a bit, its a common problem with this motor

Not a good idea recycling warm water from the engine . I think you should have a fresh cool water into your bucket. Do let me know if I am wrong.

This motor does feature a tilt option, yes. It can be locked all the way up with a simple adjustable lock / bracket
