(2020) The Best Way to Play MGS2 on PC 

Quick update: the latest dev builds of PCSX2 have corrected the skin texture and water reflection issues. For the former, you have to set blending accuracy to high, but both effects are now fully fixed. Personally, this is the way to play MGS2 on PC now. The PS2 version was how it was meant to be played and now you can upscale it to 1080p and beyond but retain all of the original effects.

We need a MGS saga HD Remastered pack for PC on Steam with all the MGS games up to V. If Konami lost the genious that was Kojima to make new titles then remaster the old ones and re-sell them in consoles they never been in! for crying out loud the 3DS had a MGS 3 port before PC!

Thanks for the video man, I played MGS2 on PSV, it surprisingly runs at 60fps most of the time but the control still suck a bit. Probably gonna check out the PCSX2 version, since it's the original!

Usually pc versions have better wall textures due to slightly cleaner upscaling however Sprite and object upscaling is where emulation truly shines. Just finished a replay on pcsx2 a few months ago at max internal res but what really makes the sprites pop out is going into the hacks and making both "skip draw" and "texture offsets" 0 - 0. When using those settings its like your watching a 3d glasses movie flick without the glasses the character models and sprites pop out soo much.

I just finished mgs2 on rpcs3 and it was really good. I wasn't aware it was on ps3 until I saw this video. Only a few minor slowdowns, but overall I think the graphical improvements make up for it. It wasnt on gog due to licensing issues or something. Thanks for the breakdown of the different versions.

Not to mention that in the HD Edition, the M9's Laser Sight's front is messed-up, the Mine Detector doesn't work if you don't enable the Radar which us weird because the older gen Version did that and the Images in the Mission Mode are blurred.

I used the PC version as it ran on my i5-8250U without any problems at 1080p while I would get 20fps on PCSX2. Not even bothering with RPCS3 as it's CPU intensive.

Great analysis! My biggest issue with these games on PC is the lack of the pressure sensitive buttons from the Dualshock 3 (same with the 3D GTA games). I've been looking for a way to replay MGS2 and I'm thinking I'll use Xenia to emulate the HD 360 version. I don't feel like going through the nightmare of getting the Dualshock 3 to work properly on PC.

Totally agree with the PC version. The HD version looks great in comparison, though, in my opinion. Wish it would come to PC sooner rather than later. They've kept us waiting, huh?

For the lights on the NVGs being dimmer I see that as an absolute win, looks cooler imo

This video brings up quite a accurate summery of my problems with running MGS2S on PCSX2, there was a thing you left out though, transparent textures like the Harrier 1's cockpit and Otacon's glasses are fully opaque unfortunately, I did come here to ask a question though, would you possibly know how do to fix the shadowing appears around Raiden in some areas like Strut B? sorry if I come off rude.

There is a 16:9 patch btw for PCSX2, as there is for most games.

I played Metal Gear Solid 2 on PS2 and PC about two decades ago. For PC, I had a Pentium III 700 MHz with Windows 2000 and 256 mb ram and Nvidia GeForce MX 400 64 mb video ram card and a DVD drive and Metal Gear Solid 2 barely worked on that computer and this was on lowest settings (12-15 fps). The graphics and sound were choppy, and it crashed from time to time. Of course, the original Metal Gear Solid 2 PC requirements technically require a Pentium III 800 MHz processor. However, it is possible for lower Pentium III processors like mine to play that game because of the optimization. Just make sure you have at least 256 mb RAM and at least a NVIDIA GeForce MX 400 64 mb video ram card or better and have a DVD drive and put the settings on low and it will barely play. Heck, Metal Gear Solid 1 Integral worked like a charm (even on high settings) except for the Psycho Mantis boss fight. That being said, I prefer playing Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 on PS1 and PS2, respectively. These two games were the best Metal Gear Solid games ever.

The reason why MGS2 on RPCS3 didn't work as well is because of its compatibility, Sons of Liberty HD & Snake Eater HD are in the "In-game" category on the compatibility which basically means performance issues, serious glitches or the game is unable to be finished. As for Peace walker, that seems to be listed in the "playable" category

GOG version with that V dude's mod works for me. I don't remember much of the original and never played Substance version but it works. I honestly never got past tanker as a kid anyways. So none of the little missing graphical effects don't matter, never noticed them until you pointed them out haha. Plug and play with PS4 controller, can boost graphics a tiny bit, play at modern resolutions, cloud saves of GOG, V's fix launches a window before game with all the options etc. I liked the PS3 version too, but sold my PS3 years ago. I've just never got into emulation, I know it's not much work to set it up, not really, just never done it. Don't feel like hunting down ISO files or whatever. Though I'm sure that's super easy too. I'd like to play MGS emulated, it's pretty hardcore on original Playstation. Have to be in nostalgia mood to get through it.

I play 2 and 3 on series X 1 on Duckstation, and first time playing twine snakes on dolphin. I have to still crack out the ps3 just for 4 tho lol, crazy as its the most modern mainline game bar V.

Ever tried MGS2 for PC with ReShade? Might not fix the bugs, but it might gain beauty by utilizing some modern gpu post-processing.

Been playing MG Solid 2 on my M1 Mac with both AetherSX2 and RPCS3. So far I prefer running the game under AetherSX2 with the widescreen hack turned on. Get a solid 60fps under both.

Hey if you go on archive.org you can find the pc version than add the patch and your set you get to experience this great game free of charge

For me the PC version with fixes is fine for the most part, a few graphical issues here in there but that's it. PCX2 is kind of intensive for my poor cpu so I can't play that version.

ps2 version with pcsx2 with quick save feature is the best ! I can speedrun the game with that feature

I love all the games but I miss mgs4 the most cause the game was very demanding on PS3. I'd gladly pay to have mgs collection for pc and consoles (prev and current gen)!!

keep in mind for mgs2 on rpcs3, the game does crash at the credits (this happened for the actual ps3 version as well). I have been searching for a fix, but cant find it if you are looking to play NG+, be warned of this!

Hey man, I have a problem with the RPCS3 version. I've been emulating all the games and loving them so far. But when I got to the big shell in Mgs2 theres been this visual bug. Its this kind of black box that follows the character around. It happens outside mostly but can happen inside too. It happened briefly in the tanker but barely noticeable. But now it happens all the time and it's really bugging me. I didn't see the glitch in your footage, so any help?

Cool. Please let us know when the PS2 emulation version is fixed. I hope it will be eventually. PS3 emulation is too slow on my PC. PS2 works great but just has those transparency issues.

Has anybody in the community invesitgated injecting the HD Collection textures into the pc version somehow? I’d probably consider that the way to play MGS2 if somebody managed that, but until then the Xbox One port remains king.

PCSX2 is generally not a great emulator, we just tolerate it because there's no viable alternatives currently.

Im trying to play it in rpcs3 but i cant shoot. o matter what i do there is a problem qith the squere button and ir isnt my controller, my controller is fine.

i have played the ps2 emulator for a while. the issue i have is that i feel a bit of input lag playing in it. Does the ps3 one have this problem too? :( (i also have psp and some nintendo emulators and i dont have that kind of trouble so IDK what to do)

Currently playing through MGS2 on RPCS3 and there are some issues to note, during loading screens after cutscenes or when entering new areas the game will hang frequently, it can be reduced dramatically by disabling TSX instructions, setting sleep timers to "all timers" and using ASMJIT for the SPU, but it still happens, i've lost progress multiple times because of it but with regular saves it's possible to have a decent playthrough of the game. I can't believe they haven't re-released the HD Collection, they're sitting on brilliant remasters of MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker and doing absolutely nothing with it, what a waste.
