2020 Toyota highlander headlight adjustment
~make sure your vehicle is on level ground!
~make sure your tire air pressure is set correctly
~sometimes it helps to rough up the front suspension before starting to make sure its settled.
Toyotas have always had a issue with their headlights aimed too high. I see it often while driving around from Tacoma's to tundras. the highlander is no exception. In this video I show how I do Drive way adjustments to the low beam headlights, which on this trim level highlander also adjusts the high beams at the same time.

I thought I was the only one having this problem. I felt dumb actually thinking my high beams were on. I get flashed everyday! I will be calling my Toyota services for an adjustment!

Yes! You’re not alone. Just be nice about it and express your saftey concerns. They should help if it’s under manufacture warranty

Your timing was perfect. You posted this video 16 hours ago and I just came in from trying to adjust my 2022 Highlanders XLE (gas engine) headlights down lower. My first night trip I made in this car I had no fewer than 6 drivers flash their headlights at me in 5 miles of travel, and yes I was in low beam mode and the automatic high beam control was definitely turned off. I spent way too much time outside just now TRYING to find the 3 adjustments that the manual talks about. The manual says that there are 2 adjustments for up/down and 1 adjustment for right/left and there is even a guide on the plastic trim under the hood telling you which adjustments perform which function. I only found the one adjustment that you changed and successfully lowered the driver's side headlight about 1 1/2 inches measured about 25 feet from my car. I am leaving the passenger side unchanged at this point as things I have read say that should be a bit higher than the driver's side. They were even across when I started. It was good to hear another opinion saying that there is 1 adjustment and not 3 adjustments. Thank you so much!

Thanks! I appreciate the comment. My recommendation would be to keep both headlights even with each other. Also remember that smallest of adjustment can make huge difference. An inch and a half sounds like a big adjustment but if you can still safely see the road then you may be ok. But I’m glad the video helped you!

@@HandsOnDismantler I will continue to fine tune it but that is an inch and a half difference from a distance of 25 or more feet making it a rather insignificant change I would think. I took it for a quick drive and nobody flashed me.

Thanks for showing me where the adjuster was. I was able to turn the star adjuster easily by hand with no screw driver.

😳 really??? I mean it shouldn’t be hard to turn but it shouldn’t be easy. It should be ok but I would inspect it and make sure it’s not going to turn while hitting bumps and stuff.

Yes we are out of town and got brighted the whole drive at night fully loaded…again. Was about to go out and buy a screw driver but instead adjusted both sides easily in seconds by hand. Lowered both about 6 inches so will have to see how it goes.

Thank you for this, really appreciate it! I have a 2021 Highlander hybrid, and I’m constantly getting flashed by oncoming drivers, while I have my low beams on. I called the dealership and they said there was nothing they can do about it. Service advisor just said to try lower powered bulbs. Are you saying there is an adjustment in the 2021 Highlander? I feel like I’m going to get into a road rage incident with somebody that is mad about me blinding them!
@HandsOnDismantler

You’re welcome! Thanks for the comment. Some vehicles have bulbs but most are LEDS and it’s not as easy to swap to a lower powered led as he said.

Dealer did nothing for me. Said they can’t go lower or it would reduce the distance I can see. Ended up driving with just my running lights at night and I found it to be more than enough. I’m mostly rural so it’s pitch black out there at night anyways. In the city I do click on full headlights but by then we’re on leveled roads and street lights help even out our ridiculously bright lights.

Hello, I have a couple of questions. First of all, looking at the "whiteness" of the light I am guessing these low beams are LED bulbs? Secondly, I have a 2017 XLE non hybrid and my low beams are Projector style halogen and the amount of light is pretty pathetic ( I have newer Toyota bought bulbs that are less than a year old ) On a very dark night with a little to a lot of rain the light appears to not even be on, without rain on a "non cloudy night" they are adequate. I am wondering if the LED low beams stock on your Highlander are what is causing people to flash their high beams at you? If so, is there adjustment "for "side to side"? I still think a lot of people will flash their high beams even if the light is adjusted though as many consider LEDs a scourge of humanity. On my 2017 like I said the low beams suck and are pretty much dangerous even with new bulbs ( the light was noticeably better when I put in the new Toyota bought low beams halogens but still inadequate and now les than a year later they are just as bad as the 4 year old original bulbs I replaced. I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to an LED bulb for low beam. I have noticed that the light pattern of my current low beams has a fairly large amount of the stronger light about 3-4 feet into the opposing lane. I know that when using LEDs in a 2017 projector low beam headlight you must get a LED bulb that doesn't have a fairly large heat sink on the end as the hole for the bulb is off center inside the dust cover and that won't fit back on with a "larger heat sink". I believe that the current adjustment of the low beam pattern will put a stronger "whiter" light beam into the first 3 feet of so of the opposing lane, so I would need to adjust the beam side to side about 2 feet at 50 feet distance.

Hey! So this video was done on a 2020 and the 2017 is a different body style. But it should have the same principles. Switching to LED Is good but you need to purchase quality led bulbs. Low end bulbs will not give you striaght shot pattern. They will be more scattered and not work for what you need. Just do some Research on it and you’ll see what I’m talking about. But on this 2020 it did not have side to side adjustments. Or if it did, I missed it. It was dark and I was doing this quickly for a friend. Almost all cars do have side to side adjustments as well. But like always, you should be careful when adjusting headlights because you could make it harder to see for others or yourself if you’re not sure how to properly adjust them!

@@HandsOnDismantler Just a heads up in case anyone lese askes. I just finished washing down the engine area from a dusty winter. I took a look around on the 2017 Highlander XLE and on theblack plastic that covers the top of the radiator and goes along both sides I noticed a plastic "cover" marked "up and down" on each side just above the headlight housing. Right beside that if a hole marked L-R so I assume that's the side to side adjustment I asked about. On another site someone said there was no side to side adjustment screw but it's definitely there. I have done headlight adjustment on several vehicles before. A 79 Camaro that I had lowered a couple inches and a truck that had gone up. I used a system similar to yours on a garage door at about 25 feet away. I actually sat on a chair at about sedan height and off to the side about 10 feet to see if my adjustment had put light into the other driver's eyes, I know I knw not exactly scientific. I also agree with your comment about doing research. I want a low beam that is not so pathetic as the stock halogens but I don't want to be that person who annoys and blinds other drivers. I think I found the ones that might work for me. They are Sealight Scoparc S2s ( H11) and what I like about them is the "bases" are built to almost look like a OEM H11 Halogen, they have a fan and should fit in the weird spot that the hole for the bulb is under the dust cover ( the mounting hole is at about 11:00 position not centered so the LEDs with larger heat sinks won't allow the dust cover to go on and some don't even fit because they hit the side of the housing. Reviews say they improved the lighting quite a bit, have the same pattern as the stock bulbs but aren't "super bright" basically high beam amounts of brightness.

I’m always afraid I’d get pulled over because my highlanders headlight literally looks like high beam when it’s not. I was following behind my brother-in-law and he thought I was on high beam(which I’m not). But like, it’s the default setting from Toyota, I didn’t make any adjustment so I honestly don’t have anything to do with this 😂
