As a Tacoma TRD Offroad owner this review is pretty accurate. Also you sir deserve a lot more subs for that video quality. Loving the 4k content too. You got yourself a new sub!
This is actually a VERY honest video!!! I have a 2019 (bought it new in Jan 0f 2019) Tacoma Off Road Double Cab...I've put 61,XXX miles on it so far! I own a horse farm on a river so a LOT of those miles are in 4x4 in mud and muck and hills. A friend asked me yesterday about how I liked it - she is considering buying either a Ranger or Tacoma - as their 3rd vehicle (needing a truck for going camping , kayaking, etc). I started mentioning a lot of the things you talk about - Ok seats, non refinements, etc. At one point she said, it seems as if it has a lot of bad things...I said actually I think it is the best vehicle I've ever owned - anf the only small truck I would consider. We own Shutzhund German Shepherds - they are not the best at anything, but they are probably in the top 5 of most everything and IMO the best animal on the planet. The Tacoma has a lot of fanboys - who ruffle at any critiques...there is no need to be thin skinned about the Tacoma, it isn't - it is tough as nails. SPOT ON REVIEW!
I just test drove a Tacoma, Gladiator, and Ranger yesterday. I’m going to get a new Tacoma TRD Off-road late may/early June. If I can remember I’ll come back and provide my thoughts on it!
Dude...this has to be the best and funniest taco truck review! I laughed all the way through...why? Your sense of humour. Because I don't know what your vocation is. You should be a stand up comic, period :))). And if a Nissan Ninja pops up at your home...well, you are fucked.Thank you!
I'm getting a new tacoma monday....I use to have an f150 xl single cab. One cup holder, ONE!!! I love that this thing has so many cup holders. Drive around in a 5spd picking up fast food for you and your spouse and only one cup holder, you appreciate the little things. Like a lot of cup holders. BRUH, I CAN GET DRINKS FOR A SMALL TOWN!!!
@@jax1079 be prepared, isn't that the boy scout motto? "No mister drive thru employee I dont need a carrier, I have a tacoma. I have enough remaining cup holders to take the next five cars behind me too." Seriously though, trying to juggle turning, shifting, and a styrofoam cup between your legs is a challenge that requires expert precision.
Love the Taco but I'm 6'1". Will the new adjustable front seat make a difference for a taller rider? BTW..great video. Love your sense of humor.Thanks.
Man you’re being hard on the Frontier lol! I have heard you say you aren’t a truck guy. For someone using their truck as a truck the frontier is GREAT. Have you driven a 4.0 Frontier? It’s much torquier and more satisfying than that Tacoma 3.5. I get the frontier is a dated truck but it’s still a solid platform with a reliable engine and trans. I have had 7 Nissan trucks ranging from Hardbodies to 1st and 2nd gen Frontiers. Current daily driver is a 13 Titan. As someone who tows boats, cars and more I can tell you Nissan makes a great truck.
Haha! Some of it is because of its age, and some of it is for entertainment value since it's kind of an easy punching bag. My brother in law had a Titan and loved it, and I'd certainly like to get behind the wheel of the updated Frontier (if they'll let me, 😜)
I like the new Toyota.? Why the 6 speed transmission. The new look is different from all the others it makes it stand out from the tundra. I'm glad you made this video Jax. Keep making awesome reviews.? Do you think you can get your hands on the new Kia sorento to do a review on it ?
@@dannyawesome1149 I tired out the 2020 Soul GT, and it resolved almost all my complaints from the 2018 model. It's still under-powered (and will be until they put a V6 in it), and the interior could use some updating, but otherwise I really liked it and I hope Jax gets to take a look at it. I'd like to watch his review. The Soul really impressed me with how much stuff you could put in it. The one I had came with a dinky little 1.4L and had trouble climbing normal hills unloaded. The 2.0L can do that with ease, but still lacks the power I'm expecting. I might need to adjust my expectations, but I had no problems recommending the 2018 version, even with my complaints.
Good review funny too. . I'm actually planning to replace my Jeep Liberty CRD with a Tacoma but probably going for SR5 trim depends on $$. I have to agree the Frontier is way out of date. Ranger had an excellent feeling engine and seat but the whole dash lay out and materials were trash. Rangers ride was harsher too. It probably won't be as relaible as the Toyota and that's important cuz I want to keep it maybe 10 +years. I don't think I care for the GM trucks at all or trust they will hold up same with the newer Jeep's. For my camping trips, trips to Lowe's and daily driving I think Tacoma is the best truck for me.
@@jax1079 thanks man. I know you talked a little bad about the Tacoma's climate controls but I like the simple dials to get things done over the Ford's button or doing it on the sync3 screen.
The Toyota reliability is what pushed me towards Toyota. I'm still looking at either a new Tacoma or CPO Tundra. I was looking at a Ram 1500 Laramie before, but me and Chrysler have some really bad history, and after reading about MDS engines, I want nothing to do with them. Even though Ram is supposed to be its own thing, I'm deeply suspicious of anything that Chrysler touched. My last Jeep Wrangler, a 2012, was so horrific that I swore off anything Chrysler, so although Ram trucks are the better value proposition, I think I'm better off passing them up for a brand that doesn't bring up such bad memories. I've owned two Toyotas (both early-90's Camrys) and been extremely happy with each. I can live with cloth over leather interior so long as I can get the seat into a comfortable spot. Actually, cloth would probably be best, since I like to take my dog to the park and he likes to shed everywhere. He also likes to roll around in the dirt, so a cloth interior with rubber floor mats and hard plastics will be easier to keep clean. The Toyota name goes a long way towards reassuring people like me, as long as they continue to make quality products. They're about the only brand of used car I'll even consider. I know the Top Gear episode where they tried to destroy a Hylix was satire, but the point remains salient. For those of us who rely on a vehicle that absolutely must start every day, it's hard to beat a Toyota, and we're willing to pay the price premium and forgo features to get it. EDIT: grammar is a thing.
@@Dirtyboxer1 I'm definitely going to be giving up a little creature comforts with a new truck. I have never owned brand new always got used. My current Jeep is a Limited with all the options, leather, power heated seats and roof. I can't afford that in anything reliable that's new with all that stuff. But can live without. Cloth seats are ok. I don't need a sun roof that will eventually leak either. I really only need what comes with the SR5 v6 Tacoma. Willing to give up some things to get new and a reliable vehicle. I've had the Jeep nearly 11 years and replaced a transmission even though it's all well maintained. I want a good long ownership experience that is why I'm going to go with Toyota. A few months more of saving up like mad I'll have my big down payment to pull the deal off.
I just bought one yesterday and it sucks, the ride is super rough on the road. I'm going to take it back and get me a tacoma limited. Maybe much smoother
@@jax1079 I think Tacoma is much better than Hilux in terms of Body style, Quality & Options. The differences are quite a few including Hilux comes with Diesel.
Depends... The GM twins are more modern with nicer interiors and as many or more features, but for "real" truck use, especially off-road, the Tacoma is superior. Plus it'll last forever.
It's ok. Looks are subjective, but I like the squarish look of the Tacoma more than the Hilux. Over here, the Hilux's front end looks like the last gen Toyota Highlander, which is a family SUV.
LOOK UP TACOMA FRAME RUST------ These Toyota trucks have long Historys of weak frames...My buddys 2020 was rear-ended in a 5 mph impact and it bent the frame. Then theres the Tacomas literally breaking in Half.....from rust
The rust situations seem to have been addressed on two separate occasions and affected trucks more in certain regions. I would also note that the big three have not been free from stupid recalls, either, some of which were more serious than others.
Well I am secretly an architect, so my garage is full of Saabs. I have one for each day of the week, but I was unable to make heads or tails of this strange contraption known as the pickup truck because I’m clearly not manly enough to own one.
Larry Vang I would call it adequate in both regards. As I said in the video, the transmission is one of the biggest letdowns. It's a little hunty at slower speeds and it neuters some of the engine's power making it slower than it should be.
Totally agree with the transmission. Just test drove one, and it made my 14 year old FJ Cruiser feel like a sports car. It’s like it had no idea what to do. Can’t do it.
@@jax1079 meh tbh, the Tacoma is one of the last trucks to look like an actual truck, the ranger looks like a cross between the honda ridgeline, and a Chrysler minivan. It does not scream truck to me.
Great review! Bought the 2020 off-road model a couple months back and what you had to say pretty well aligns with my thoughts on it. Anyone need a cup holder? I got a few to spare....
I had the 04 Tahoe 4x4 with the 3rd row and that had all the space I needed ... With my Tacoma all I care about is me being comfortable lol... But the only thing I do not like and heavily agreed with you is the transmission.... too sluggish...
JAX thank you for the reply. I heard there is a setting where the truck will hold onto gears a little longer and that helps. But that may just be for the pro.
Awesome! Yeah, Toyota radar cruise isn't quite as good as some other offerings, especially from Honda. But I bet having that 6 speed is a lot better than the auto trans, which kinda sucks. Thanks for watching!
I went and sat in the Tacoma during my daughters soccer practice. The rear site room instantly kills it for me. I need a useable rear seat behind the driver. (only 6'2")
@@Steven-xj2rf Probably be fine in most anything, but the Taco would be the most limited, I bet. Frontier is best all around in my opinion, although I have a soft spot for the Taco TRD Pro... not that I could ever afford one these days.
