This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Acura RDX compact premium SUV. The Acura RDX offers a lot in the luxury utility market with above average power, space and features. The RDX has a sporty design with long sculpted and bold lines, a low stance and LED Jewel Eye headlights. The A-Spec trim ups the game with an A-Spec front and rear fascia, dual oval exhaust finishers and 20” shark grey wheels. All other trims come with 19” wheels. We have the TECH trim in Platinum White Pearl and I am so glad we got this model to review; it is the trim, one up from the base model.
Some standard features on the RDX include, LED headlights and LED taillights, a panoramic sunroof and a power tailgate, a hands-free power tailgate is standard on the top two trims. This TECH trim comes standard with blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert, as well as, body coloured front and rear parking sensors. These features are not available on the base model. The RDX has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It has 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque with standard AWD in Canada. In the US, you get standard FWD with optional AWD. Premium fuel is recommended. For fuel economy, this Acura gets 11L/100km, 21 MPG city and 8.6L/100km, 27 MPG highway. It can tow up to 1500 pounds. Our test model, Tech trim, one up from the base comes with plenty of standard features all for $47,805 CAD/$43,300 USD. It has a full leatherette interior, there is very little hard plastic in the cabin except in places you would expect it, like the bottom of the doors. It feels quite luxurious for leatherette. The RDX base model comes with a 10.2” centre display with the True Touchpad interface, a 7” multi-information display, heated front seats, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, power driver and passenger seats, a panoramic sunroof and a power tailgate. Some differences between the Tech and base trim are features like blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert plus the ELS stereo system. These features are not available on the base model. The top trim comes with a head-up display, perforated leather seats with contrast stitching and piping, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats and a hands-free power liftgate. The top two trims get perforated leather, the A-Spec trim gets an Alcantara interior and the base model leatherette. The heated steering wheel is standard on the top 3 trims and heated rear seats standard on the top two trims. There is no wireless charger available on any model. The RDX has been tuned for greater power and acceleration; it reaches peak torque at only 1600 RPM, which is quite low. The adaptive damper system only available on the top trim allows the RDX to remain soft and comfortable when driving on the highway, but firm when the road requires high performance handling and will adjust to these driving conditions. It would be nice to see this available on all trims. The RDX has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission, 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque with standard AWD in Canada. In the US, you get standard FWD with optional AWD. Premium fuel is recommended.

Had the RDX A Spec for 2 years... "upgraded" to Volvo XC60 R Design. The RDX was better! It's Roomier, drove better on the Highway and much bigger cargo area... less expensive than the Volvo as well! Definitely recommend the RDX!

Bought 2021 RDX Platinum Elite after watching your videos of prior year model. Also test drove Q5, X3 and several others. Being previous owner of Audi S4, I thought I would miss the power and handling. But having RDX for 3 months now, not regretting my decision one bit. Will definitely buy again. We just traded "down" from 2019 MDX to 2021 RDX as we don't need the third row any more. Love everything about it. Deceptively roomy inside. Only problem is the gas mileage... it's too much fun and I'm into the turbo all the time :) On long highway trips, mid-20's if you can keep it under 80 mph.

A month ago I traded in my Golf R for an RDX A-spec and I love it. Like the R, I can cruise and get great gas mileage or it has plenty of power for spirited driving. The touchpad is second nature after a couple of days and you dont need a touch screen, plus it’s easier/safer because you don’t take your eyes off the road as much. Touch screens just collect fingerprints anyways. Love the 16 speaker sound system as well. I’m very happy with my choice and coming from a car guy this SUV handles very well. Great review as always!

In a recent interview to MotorTrend, Acura boss Jon Ikeda re-confirmed the architecture in question is not related to the Honda CR-V, something we heard for the first time in Detroit earlier this year, when the brand revealed the RDX prototype. “It’s its own platform,” Ikeda told the publication. “We always think of efficiencies, but in the end, it’s about building the right product. It’s not on the CR-V platform. It’s the first on a new platform. It’s the lead vehicle

Thanks for the follow up review. Based on your last RDX review I test drove it and shifted from deciding between an X3 or GLB and bought the Acura. The RDX feels absolutely luxurious compared to the much smaller BMW / MB interiors, and none of the hard black plastic. One point worth highlighting, my wife is not a car person and doesn’t care to drive if she can avoid it, but she loves the RDX! She finds it very easy and confident inspiring. I agree a touch screen would be great, but I picked up the touch pad in about 3 days. My only wish would be more towing capacity, it’s low for this segment.

Yes, the towing capacity is low for this segment. Thanks for sharing, happy to hear your wife is comfortable in the RDX. I am surprised by the fit and finish of this interior, many German brands are using much more hard plastic throughout.

I actually always owned BMWs for the love of driving but I always had Acuras as a second family car because of the balance of driving enjoyment and family use. The special thing about Acura that you are always able to maintain economically compared to German cars. I mostly had MDXs because of the size but I personally love this one and might get it next as the kids are a bit older and the third row is not being used anymore.

I just purchased a CPO 2021 RDX Advanced with 37,500 miles. Very solid power, handling and comfort. No complaints. I was able to familiarize myself with the touchpad controls over the weekend while setting it up. Not difficult at all to work with after the initial learning curve. I highly recommend the HUD option. You can add various apps (SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Phone, etc) so they can be controlled from the steering wheel if you're not comfortable with the touchpad just yet to minimize distracted driving.

The Acura RDX is the BEST car in this class for the value. It has a very high crash safety rating for IHHS. The headlights have one of the best ratings as well. Has automatic high beams too. The space is incredible & the under cargo floor space is a bonus. This platform is so unique to Acura that the Acura engineers consider this to have a sporty platform with little commonality to the Honda CR-V. The ELS Studio 3D sound system is a must have for any body who loves to hear music. 16 speakers & 710 watts of power is incredible. Panasonic & Elliot Scheiner the Grammy award winning producer engineered this sound system with 4 of the speakers in the roof to create a 3D sound! The A-Spec version is the best value. Hopefully, Acura will include the RDX with an S Type version to play with the German SUV’s. The steering mounted controls for the driver means you don’t have to use the track pad while driving for some controls. The K20 engine is an incredible engine with a version in the Honda Civic Type R. Acura is back to its roots for great handling cars. The SH-AWD is off the charts in how it helps oversteer the back wheels on each side in a turn. It feels like the back wheels are steering you thru the corner. The value & quality for this price is are hard to beat. German rivals are much more expensive. The A-Spec rims are actually dark grey. The pano roof is amazing & is standard. I also own a 2005 Acura TSX, is one of the best handling & reliable cars. The RDX is like a TSX grown up with SH-AWD & a turbo engine. Acura is bringing back the Integra name plate & really is building high quality products. I test drove the RDX & within 2 blocks, I was so amazed at the handling, that I bought a 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec last year. No reliability issues, has been awesome. So, we are an Acura household.

● The system is confusing to use even when the RDX is parked, and it’s very distracting for drivers when the car is moving. For example, they’re forced to look at the screen to execute common audio tasks, and some adjustments are buried deep in submenus. We think it requires too much concentration, multiple steps and extended time with eyes off the road and hand off the wheel. It’s one of the worst systems that we’ve encountered recently. ●Braking performance is strong but the brake pedal has a spongy feel. The suspension quashes most bumps, but we found the ride to be rather firm and choppy. The cabin is quiet, barring a somewhat grainy engine noise. ●We got 22 mpg overall in our tests, which is average for the category, and no better than what we measured with the V6 in the previous-generation RDX. This figure also trails the performance from competitors’ small turbo engines, such as Audi, BMW, and Lexus. ●posting 52 mph through the course. Acura makes a big deal about its Super Handling AWD, which only comes into play when drivers accelerate through a corner. ●Most bumps are absorbed well, but the RDX has a jittery feel over rougher roads and on long drives. ●Most of the time the cabin is very quiet, but a coarse engine hum punches through under acceleration. It’s acceptable when driving aggressively, but annoying in everyday driving ●The brake pedal feels as if it isn’t responding at first, and it requires a bit of effort, which can make the driver feel less-than-confident. ●Although it’s nicely finished, the materials and build quality don’t quite match the best SUVs in this class. For example, the storage cubbies aren’t lined, there were some uneven panel gaps on the center console, and one of the dash vents didn’t move as freely as the others. Finally, there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin, but the material on the upper dash and window sill is quite thin. ●The RDX’s controls are among the worst we’ve experienced. There is a steep learning curve to use the infotainment system, but it is still distracting and confusing to execute common audio functions even after drivers have some familiarity. The system is slow to load after the initial start up. Consumer Reports

I have a Volvo XC60 and had I known how quirky it is before I bought it, I would not have bought it. I would have rather had the RDX Advance. A lot of people probably think I am crazy but hear me out. The RDX has fully automated heated and ventilated seats. The XC60? No. My Jeep had auto seats, not this. They will apparently come on automatically in the winter, but not in the summer. And when they do come on in the winter, it isn't based on the temperature, it starts on low and stays there. That's what I like, set it and forget it seats. The engine in the RDX is more powerful too, 272 hp vs 250 in the Volvo. Rant over.

This Summer I have driven at least eight new vehicles and been a passenger in another half dozen. The latest CRV was one of these vehicles, albeit not an RDX, I was only moderately impressed. Within a few days, I was handed the keys to an Audi Q5 (+50 km road test). The Acura may be a step up from the Honda, but I cannot believe that either of these vehicles (CRV/RDX) are any way on the same league as the Audi. 2 things I make sure is switched OFF in my RDX are the "Lane keeping assist" and the Auto-start-stop feature. Both are just utterly useless in my opinion, with the "Lane keeping assist" just an annoying feature. The auto-start-stop simply cannot be turned OFF permanently, and everytime we start up the car, we have to turn it off manually, which is doubly annoying.

Had the previous gen RDX with the V6. Nothing really stood out on that vehicle but it transported everyone comfortably and in 84k of driving it only needed regular maintenance and a set of pads/rotors in the front so it did it's job where it counted the most. This newer one seems to bring back the fun factor.

The RDX with the A-spec package is the trim that I would like even though its not much more than a an appearance package. I like all of the soft materials used around the dash and lower portions, even though its leatherette. The 10 spd transmission is a great unit that I'm familiar with. My 2019 Accord has the same 2.0t engine as well. I find that the 10spd transmission can at times run up and down gears when going up small grades on the road. I find if I leave it out of economy mode the transmission doesn't do it as much. The other great quality about the Acura RDX, is Honda reliability. That alone is reason enough for many loyal customers to keep coming back for a new generation. Not too much to complain about with a vehicle that offers great value and Honda ingenuity.

Dan D 7 months ago If you buy a Hyundai be prepared to spend minimum of $175-$500 every month on BS problems you will never experience in a quality car like an Acura. Every other month you will have to replace 1 0f 6 to 8 catalytic converters that go out for no reason like clock work one after the other. One day your CD player will stop working for no reason, you'll need to replace it. Your gas line will need replacing too when your car starts sputtering, then your gas tank that rotted from the inside for no apparent reason. Your check engine light will be on more than it is off. When you finally replace the entire engine and decide you've had enough, and sell it for next to nothing, you'll buy yourself an Acura and realize that it never needs maintenance, that it isn't normal to be without your car every other month because it's in the shop again, and you'll swear like I did to NEVER buy another Hyundai again!!!

I recently traded in my 2021 Acura RDX (SH-AWD + Technology) after 3 months of ownership. The reason being the shallow hatch height of 30”, which prevented me from putting in a full-size dog crate that’s 31” tall, and could not fit even my medium-sized mountain bike within the hatch area. These are just regular use cases and Acura’s design team need to be fired for not considering these. The 2022 MDX, a much larger vehicle, also has the same 30” hatch height problem. For comparison, the Honda CRV’s hatch is 36” tall (a sheer marvel in packaging) and the Honda Pilot and Honda Passport have 33-34” of hatch height. I now own a 2021 Honda Passport Touring, which meets all of my utility vehicle needs……can easily fit the dog crate, can easily swallow up the mountain bike. Having said that, Acura is not the only culprit here…….the Subaru Ascent, the Subaru Forester, the Subaru Crosstrek, the Toyota RAV4 are all in the unusably shallow hatch height category and it is a shame to call these utility vehicles, if they cannot cater to such mundane use cases.

I have the 2019 RDX ASpec, great car and no hesitation recommending. The only issues I have with it is the slow infotainment, i'm fine with the track pad. The auto start stop is extremely annoying and no way to permanently disable it. You need to toggle it off every time you get in the car. Beyond that, fast enough, great size, comfortable and beautiful.

I just bought a 2021 Acura RDX base, just like the one in this video, but American specs. I have been driving mustangs for the past 5 years, and I needed an SUV, this one had the power and space that I needed, plus the sunroof is amazing! I am getting all the trim blacked out and the wheels painted and powder coated in gloss black, I think the chrome is hideous. They only had the A spec in black, and I refuse to ever own a black car again, they are to hard to keep clean. I am happy with the base model, I still have my Shelby GT350 for when I want to scream down the road and it has all the bells and whistles. I see myself in this RDX for a lot of years to come! Thanks for the review.

The benefits of premium gas for the engine & power out way the cost. Like I say, premium gas is for premium cars. All premium cars take premium gas. Better quality gas, more cleaners for the engine, more power & better fuel mileage. My Acura products only get premium. My lawn mover stopped working & the guy said my fuel line was plugged up from using regular gas. Only premium fuel for my lawnmower & snowblower. You pay for what you get, don’t skimp on the fuel. Using a lower grade of gas will mean less power. I noticed better fuel mileage & better power for passing with premium fuel in turbocharged cars on long trips.

Also, wanted to highlight the fact that the current generation RDX (2019+) is *not* based on the current Honda CRV. The prior generation was. This generation RDX (2019+) is a bespoke platform. Acura officials were particularly highlighting this aspect when the new RDX was introduced in 2018. I am guessing the *next* CRV might base itself on the current-generation RDX, since it makes sense to consolidate platforms.

The center console though... Honda/Acura went through a phase where they threw out everything that was great about the late 90's cars and started throwing stuff to the wall to see what would stick, leading to a lot of questionable design choices. That center stack is like a throwback to 2010 that just won't die.

I have the RDX SH-AWD and the Tech package, with the beige interior. I did not want the A-spec, since it does not come with the Beige interior. I really wanted the Advance version (with Beige interior), but not a single Advance package with the Beige interior, was available in a 500 mile radius of where I lived. Not a SINGLE one. So finally settled for the Tech-package version. Does handle well, relative to its size and weight and is reasonably spacious inside, even though tall boxy items (an Extra-large Dog crate) cannot be fitted in well, due to its shallow roof (looks great but loses out on practicality), even when the rear seats are folded down.......a CRV or a Pilot (or even a tiny Honda Fit) can easily swallow them up, of course, due to their well-designed, boxy interior.

There is a a lawsuit against Acura because their navigations were going blank and the customers said they had to pull over turn the car off and then restart the the car and it would fix the problem until the next time it happen. And Acura could not fix the problem. That was enough for me to keep looking for another car. Thats the problem when new vehicles come out it';s best to wait until they figure out the problems before you buy.

I love Acura products and recently bought a used 2018 RDX Elite. We chose it over the newer RDX design because of the noisy 4 cylinder engine, turbo lag, and lousy trackpad, of the newer generation. The V6 has far better drivability in that the engine response is very linear, there is no trackpad, and the console doesn’t look like a child designed it for a video game. Although not ideal, the older school two screen infotainment system is very good.

I don't use Love for things, only people and family. The RDX was a little too tight for me, and thought it would uncomftable on longer trips. I have spinal issues, so room and comfort is important. However, the RDX is an outstanding SUV, handles like a Sports Sedan. There is no lack of power IMO. I would definitely opt for the Advance model. I did for my 2022 MDX, So glad I did. This RDX and the MDX are the best values in the respective SUV categories. I am a shopper, taking Sy Sym's advice...."an educated Consumer, is my best customer" ( he was talking about men's suits). "Honda invested $54 million at East Liberty to build the RDX, where it also builds the larger MDX and the similar Honda CR-V....It took Ruhl and teams of other employees throughout the plant about four years to figure out how to make the RDX while still producing the MDX and the popular CR-V on the same line." What about the GV70 as a competitor? You mentioned that is more powerful, but, it seems to me that the Genesis has a nicer interior, more power and more character, so what do you guys think?

super nice car ... I traded in my 2014 RDX and with 2020 RDX last year ... the new generation is much better than its previous generation in term of luxury, though my 2014 RDX is a V6 ... it is so popular for this car ... again, one suggestion(same for MDX): get rid of touch pad with a true touch screen.

Thanks for a great review Zack and Andrea! We crossed shopped the RDX against the Audi Q5. I preferred the RDX as it was a great value and had a sportier feel, in addition the dealer was offering a heavy discount! The wife however liked the refinement of the Audi... so take a guess what we bought? 😁

@@nica080910 that's a bit of a myth and overblown on the internet... I've owned several VAG products over the the last 23years and 13 of those with some version of their 2.0T the worst thing that has happened are a cam follower(GLI)and coil packs(Golf), it's all about maintenance and who services the vehicle. Our current batch of Audi's(B9 A4 and 2nd gen Q5) have had zero issues over 3+ years. One area Audi cannot be matched are interior design, quality, and teutonic driving feel ...we'll probably buy another Audi or move up to a Porsche with our next vehicles.

What’s really interesting to me is the leatherette on the Tech. package. We bought a ‘19 Tech. SH-AWD, and in the US it comes with real leather. That’s not a change I expected them to make for Canada.

Great guys, we have a 2006 Acura TSX which we set on cuz the driving feel way better than 2005, something Acura made it better You will never find another such refine car that is Made in Japan, the seat is the best, way better than all Odysseys from 95, 99, 02, 05, 08, etc long drives i wonder if RDX as good ?

I got a rdx in the driveway and i gotta say it fills most of the checklist. The 1 problem is its performance, good luxury vehicle for cruising but if you want it to be a sport suv for spirited driving this is the wrong vehicle. I raced it against my ilx and it lost with +70hp, +100 torque and awd. For all that extra money its slower and i specifically blame the car's factory tuning for that.

The GV80 has faster with similar handling as RDX. Consumer Reports Emergency Lane Change Test, braking from 60 mph. Buick Envision 55.5 mph, 128 ft CX-5(187hp) 54 mph, 133 ft Q5 52.2 mph, 130 ft RDX 52.5, 127 ft X3 53.0 mph, 130 ft Macan 51.5 mph, 130 ft MDX 52.5 mph, 135 ft NX 50 mph, 132 ft QX50 56 mph, 129 ft Stelvio 53 mph, 132 ft C&D has the Envision braking from 70 mph at a segment topping 158 ft. You want to compare Buick to the Acura in reliability? Out of possible 5 Envision- 4 RDX- 1 Q5- 2 X3- 2 Macan- 3 MDX- 4 NX- 5 QX50- 3 Stelvio- 3

Great vehicle, however, I'm having a major issue. We have a 2020 Acura RDX with a fuel pump recall to which there are no corrective parts available. We were told that by October they should be contacting us. What's infuriating despite their "very serious accident possible" warning letter, they won't give us a loaner nor pay for a lease. I'm supposed to either park the car or keep driving and pray nothing happens on the highway. This is a sick joke. Very disappointing the NHTSA allows this to happen and Acura-Honda's approach to problem resolution. Anyone else with this problem?
