This looks like Yamaha's interpretation of a Ducati. Not that it's an ungly bike, but it's certainly not the gorgeous machine that the old ones were.

The lack of a trellis frame definitely doesn’t look as cool, but it’s lighter and handles better with the new frame

I kinda feel that way as well. It does feel good when sitting on the bike. It’s really light weight much like the Aprilia tuono 660. It’s still a really nice bike in the flesh.
@laurenmartinez55

It's lighter and faster. It's better in every way that matters. If you hold on to the past just for the sake of holding on to the way something looks, you become Harley. Do you want Ducati to become Harley with their inefficient pushrods and stone age cradled engines? Maybe it's because I'm an engineer but screw that. If you want a trellis frame go buy an SV650. The Ducati badge means speed, and you don't get speed with an overweight trellis frame, not when KTM are putting their best engineers on making a mockery of you

Great first ride, great review! A LOT of upgrades, very nice. With a 414 lb curb weight, NOT a heavy bike. The departure from the trellis frame is not a big factor in my book. They've improved the engineering for weight savings, rider center of mass and improved performance. A very sweet package. Thanks again!

that sound you're loving is the intake "honk" that most Monsters and related Duc's have... it only comes out during high load, so you don't hear it when just revving in neutral, etc - only on the road (or on a dyno, etc) - my Supersport S does the same thing (basically the same engine as this new monster, the 939 Testastretta 11degree engine, and the older monster's frame under the fairings).

I’m at 1k miles on my 2021 monster +. The Termi full exhaust opened it up and let it breath/scream. I love every second of riding this beast. I 100% disagree that this is a starter bike. Over 100hp at 400 lbs shouldn’t be a 1st bike. It is easy to ride but not at all a 1st bike.

I LOVE the trellis frame and at first I wouldn't even look at this 'monstered up' wanna-b. But after watching some videos and listening to professionals review some of the mods, I'm starting to realize there's a tradeoff. Maybe it really is time to let go the old. The same company that maintained the classic look of the Monster for decades now decided the old design was holding back performance improvements. I LOVE the water cooled option (the Monster is a "monster" to ride in stop and go traffic). The new dash/display is incredible. The bike is what, like.. 20kg lighter than the previous 797 (which I LOVED). So while the look may have changed a bit, this bike still rides, sounds and feels every bit the Monster. I'm gonna keep an open mind.

I'm in the same position. The thing about Ducati is how fun they are to ride. While the MT series which I have the CP2 in the Tenere, are great engines, but I have more fun on my Icon. The MT's are the Japanese version of Ducati, but they don't have the same gutteral feeling. They Whine, the don't rumble.

@@sleeper.simulant7327 Yeah I'm not sure how you measure a lot worse, and Ducati is cheaper on their suspensions in comparison to Yamaha. The Monster demonstrates this in their cost cutting. @sleeper.simulant7327
@sleeper.simulant7327 2 года назад
@@ericwilliams626 Ducati most certainly isn’t cheaper in terms of chassis lol. MT’s, aside from the MT09 SP, are running unadjustable cheapo KYB’s that are tuned like pogo sticks from the factory, and the MT09 SP is still running a KYB, it’s just got compression and rebound adjustments on it, and a base Ohlins rear shock… Go charge a corner hard in a MT07 or a MT09 and let me know how unsettled they get, it’s pretty sketchy… but that goes beyond just the suspension, the frames flex waaay to much on the MT. One of the content creators on here did full suspension mods to a MT09 and it still couldn’t outrun a bone stock Street Triple RS on a track. If it can’t outrun a Street Triple, it’s not outrunning a new Monster, which is on par with a Street Triple in nearly every way in terms of how the chassis’s are tuned…

I know this is almost a year old video but anyone wondering about the "Ducati Service Cost" has to consider a couple things: Ducati has way more confidence in their metallurgy now than a decade ago, and oil/chemical quality has gotten way better than a decade ago. The oil service is recommended every 9000 miles. Yes, nine-thousand. Desmo service (valve inspection and belt change) is due every 18000 miles. I daily a 2019 821 and with the amount of riding I do I only have to change the oil once a year and I do Desmo about every other year. For comparison, a Kawasaki Z900 calls for oil every about 7500 miles and valve adjustment every 15k. So the Ducati actually requires LESS service than a comparable Japanese motorcycle. That being said, Desmo service does involve belts and the valve system is kinda whacky so there is slightly more labor and materials involved, but when I had it done it lined up with my annual so the dealership did all the fluids and chain maintenance and etc at the same time and put it all on the same bill. They had my bike for about a business day doing all that, and it cost me just about $800 out the door, parts and labor included. Not too bad. Gone are the days of checking valves every oil change and changing the oil every 5000 miles, gone are the $1000+ "maintenance" bills. And ever since VW took over ordering parts has become much quicker. Ducati is premium but not overpriced.

Of all the bikes thant I had, It is the only one that serve me well going to work, comute on the weekends and a long trip ones a year. And yes, at least optional cruise control would be lovely but....I loooove this model ! The thing that I do not like on this 2021 model, the design is too close to the Yamaha MT, I prefer the "old style Monsters" PS: The "bikini" fairing does something ! It pulls away the wind on your arms. I tried without it an the wind tries to "separate both arms away" PS2: You CAN select the layout design on each screen en the setup menu ! ;)

I have a previous generation 821 that I ride daily, I just rolled over 20k and loved every mile of it. They're pricy but one thing I've found is overlooked in comparisons to other bikes is the quality of the factory equipment. You get steel braided brake lines, BREMBO brakes, actually good suspension (in some cases adjustable), a quick shifter, that electronics package, and a lively feeling engine and chassis. An SV650 might be Monster-like but you'll spend more trying to make it into a Monster than just getting a Monster. I'm actually tempted to trade mine in right now, though. I've had it for 3 years and I'm feeling it's time for something new. But my only two considerations are ANOTHER Monster or going balls to the walls and getting a Streetfighter.

@@johnreggie7797 if you’re alright with the $12k price tag then yes. I went from a RC390 to this bike after three years of riding. The Urban mode this Monster has limits the engine to 75hp. It’s still plenty of power to reach dumb speeds or pass people on the interstate. But you can really grow into the bike and I’m sure after a year or so the aftermarket will catch up and we could start putting higher end suspension on it for an even sportier feel or make the bike feel more planted on track days.

Trelis frame adds weight to the bike. I'm okay with itnot having it. Frankly, this bike is so tempting to me. I have CB1000R Black, and if this bike had cruise control, I wouldn't think about it, since my HOnda doesn't have it, but Not sure it has it. SP version is nice, though. The sound is great. I"ve been riding bikes for over 25 years, and frankly, I would buy this bike fo me. Plenty of power, confortable bike, and good looking. THe SP model really temps me, but I have to go with the black paint (I think its matte black?) Thing is, you compare it to my HOnda CB100R Black Edition, and, while the HOnda is a bit more expensive, (not much) that bike is built SO WELL and oes not look cheap. Bingeing your 1st rides. Just bought a 2022 MT-09 SP. It's amazing. Going to talk a bit of smack real quick :) It seems like wind is constantly brought up. I just don't get it. Maybe because my first bike is a DR650 with no shield. My snowmobiles have high windshields, but it is usually below 15 degrees so it is justified. I use earplugs and I love the wind. I consider it just part of the sport...being out in the elements. Try riding a DR650 in 45 degree rain at night. Wind on a nice warm Georgia day is just fantastic in comparison. I get you have to let people know about the wind for bikes. At the same time, boo hoo :) Ok I'm done. Love the vids man. Yea you should get your weight down. Calories in calories out. The bikes will be even faster :)

I am that older guy that rode some dirt bikes and a few street bikes many years ago that decided to hop back on. In January I began researching and by March I was set on this bike but there were none to be found. I bought a Triumph Trident and it has been an excellent bike. The ECU flash (at 1st service) helped the squishy off-idle throttle but it is still there. The only thing missing, for me, are those extra 30 ponies from 3rd gear up. I have a feeling that if I get to experience that extra torque and get to feel those Brembos it will be tough to go home without it. One thing you didn't mention, with the new Monster, is the desmo service interval. Up to 18k miles from 7.5k. That's pretty substantial. Great video. Thanks Chase.

Thank you, Chase, for this awesome video and all the other videos! Your idea to do a "First ride on track" is brilliant. I will watch all of them from start to end. I am 55 YO and live in NH USA. The 2022 Ducati Monster is my FIRST motorcycle and I love it. All electronic aid kept and continue to keep me from trouble. The gauge cluster was overwhelming for only 30-45 min then it becomes making more sense, and after 2 days of riding, I saw it as a very useful, complete, and simple source of information. Here in NH, we have very good roads, so I feel that the front suspension could be stiffer. However, when I drive to Boston (the roads are not so good) the front is very as it should be. Right on the money. After riding the bike for 1,500 miles (~2,400 Km) from new, I feel my decision on starting with the Monster is most appropriate. It is only heavier by 10-15 lb (5-8 Kg) than true "Entry Bikes" like R3 or Ninja400, however, it can be a bike to enjoy for years to come. Highly recommended as a "First Bike" even it is almost a liter engine (937CC).

Man…I’m 35 and am planning on getting my first bike. Have ridden scooters so I’m definitely comfortable on 2 wheels (not say they are anywhere close to this) but with all the driver aids I’m thinking this would be a great bike. Question …with a quick shifter you don’t have to let off the throttle like when using the clutch?
@cospics
@cospics Год назад
I will stay well away! My suggestion is Honda cb500f brilliant smooth machine, with no frills and very well priced. Learn the clutch and practice. I just purchased the monster+ because my twenty year old Ninja is not that good for my back, spending money for an expensive Italian vibrator is not a good idea especially if your ego will tempt you to put it in sport mode and have to be a ballerina to find the rear brake! The answer to your question about the quick shifter is yes changes up with throttle on. Enjoy your riding.

When I first saw the release of the new Monster I knew I wanted one. Went to a Ducati dealership to check them out and for a little under $15k otd ($14,738) with no adjustable front suspension I said nope. That’s the only drawback for me at that price is no adjustable front suspension. Good review though Chase!

[OC] Ah yes, a 100+hp $10k bike is totally one to recommend for beginners…you had me until then. I think your vast experience might be blinding you to the beginner perspective. I was wondering why you wouldn’t recommend a 390 or such because they HAVE the electronics to boot…Doing an intro-to-riding series on an R7 kinda tells the tale though. I have a monster and the potential is far too high for a beginner (mine doesn’t even have 100whp). It’s fair to call this new iteration a good daily rider but you need to consider that to you have years of experience and have ridden much faster motorcycles, so to say it’s safe for a beginner is so irresponsible bro.
@ario7965
@ario7965 3 года назад
Well, it depends. There are different kind of beginners. I think it largely depends on the person. My wife is a beginner and she knows what she should get and what is not good for her. Obviously, we all love a nice looking, powerful motorcycle. But a little riding experience, like an NSF course, can tell you what you can do, and what you should get as a beginner. The 2021 Monster is a good beginner bike if you are a responsible rider and start with the Urban mode and do not try dangerous maneuvers. I mean a beginner should let the skills build.
@grant0208
@grant0208 3 года назад
@@ario7965 no it’s not. It’s way expensive and it’s potential is too high - that’s the issue. There’s no justifying anything with 100+bhp as a beginner friendly bike. You’re simply lying to yourself and I’m sorry you can’t see that. Best of luck to your wife…but man you’re making a worse rider if people have to “hold on and grow into it” There’s plenty of non-RU-vid reviewers or salespeople (chaise is both technically) who will parrot what I say. But the “helmet and gloves and you’re good” crowd will probably love your POV. Small displacement is the way.

OC:I think the Monster/Monster+ would be not just a great commuter bike, but a great starter bike for anyone like you said, the settings could be turned down to their lowest. The price point at $12K sounds expensive, but in the long run could be cheaper. Example: Let’s say a new rider buys a Ninja 400 for $5k, then when he gets a second bike, he buys a Yamaha R7 for $8999.00 that’s about $14K all together, and you have to almost relearn to ride because the R7 has more aggressive positioning and everything. So in the long run the Monster is still the same ride, you can just turn the power, and everything up etc. so yeah the Monster really doesn’t sound like too far fetched of a starting point, should you grow out of the Monster (At 900 CC I don’t see how) but if you really want something else later just get the Monster 1200 at that point, or if you have the money, get the Street Fighter V4, I don’t know how different the two are, but you might as well give the Hyper Naked a go.

Yaaaas! I’m that guy - rode bikes my whole life, dirt bikes, old 750 cruisers, even the Venture, now I am comparing picking up this to something more retro and off road capable like the Ducati Desert Sled for a daily. The honest answer is I want to daily this, all day! I get the Scrambler appeal but isn’t it more of a cafe / bar bike?? Just saying, the new Monster is the future of a daily naked. it's a great bike, an awesome fun bike in every way, even probably better than all other monsters before it performance wise. Just don't call it a Monster, cus it's not. It's not just the red frame that is missing, it's the single sided swing arm, the engine is covered with plastic, tank is just weird, headlight too not a fan. Nothing about this bike screams muscle, looks like a MT07 with a red tank. The Monster 1200 S and R are going to be the last reminder of an iconic bike Design and Performance, they will be the last real Monsters. In my opinion.
