We wanted to see how well our 2021 Ford F150 Propower onboard generator would work in a real world boondocking situation, so we plugged in our Airstream to test it for 24+ hours! We started the day at 11 am with a hot Airstream. We put the A/C on high and the fridge/freezer to "coolest." Check out the video to see how the truck performed!

Finally, a video with real people testing the power boost F-150 Hybrid. Thanks 🙏. Could you do another video but out in a campground for a few days and use everything in your airstream as we would normally do at a campground??? Thanks guys. Nice to see the wife involved on this type of videos and not just us hubbies.

Nice video but I noticed that you have your truck on Normal mode and cool seats running in your truck. The best results come when when you turn off your accessories and put the truck in Eco Mode. This will extend the use of the battery is what I’ve noticed with my PowerBoost.

You should turn off the hvac, displays and other interior items when running in generator mode. For starters people won't know truck is on and running (when it does idle) and it'll help save onboard vehicle power so less idle time as focus is on generator and not truck. I use my powerboost to power our trailer every other weekend camping. Works great.

very interesting video. I just purchased a 2022 F150 Powerboost with the 7.2 Kwh generator. Got the truck with only about 20,000 miles. on it. Chap that had it was getting a bigger trailer and upgraded to a 2500 diesel. Looking forward to some boondocking now. Have been towing with a 2015 F150 Ecoboost, so I know the truck handles my trailer very well, so now with a much newer and lower mileage truck I should be good to go for years to come. thanks for the excellent review....and continued safe travels.

Absolutely appreciate this video. Real World real Folks. I trade our GMC half-ton in 12 mths. I have my eye on this truck; more so boondocking over night on my way to a destination. And when warmer weather kicks in we need A/C even on a low setting to sleep for 6 hrs and then allow us to quickly make coffee. And we would run our 12v on eco mode at sleep time anyway. So worse case i may burn 2 gallons .. Worth every penny. Will be installing a Soft Start for A/C.. Looking a the XLT 4x4 Hybrid. We travel small and wish Ford would put out a 2.7L Hybrid version. I feel it would get even better fuel e-commerce in city when not towing. Being a realtor I do allot of city driving.

@@GoranandJen Thanks but I believe that is the engine/truck stripped payload without any features. I find the payload to be the most fleeting of all specs on trucks and yet critical to towing. I have a 2017 Platinum 3.5L and the payload sticker "Tire and Loading Capacity" (Yellow/red/white sticker inside driver door) says my max cargo is 1548 lbs for payload. The Ford website advertised figure for 2017 was 2250-3230 lbs. depending on the configuration. The dealer said that was normal as accessories add weight and mine was loaded. The 2018 Limited I looked at had a 12ish payload. Look at your Cargo figure on the door "tire and loading" where is says maximum cargo no more than xxx. That is where Ford puts it. I was told the 4wd Powerboost was about 1200lbs and the 2wd no one seems to know. I have a 1000# tongue weight on my Airstream so whatever minus 1000 and you see why I am curious on the hybrid model. Is the 7.2kWh "generator" an actual generator running somewhere on the truck, or is the power coming from the truck motor/hybrid battery via an inverter? In other words, is the only sound when using the "generator" the sound of the truck running intermittently?

I love the idea of the onboard generator but my concern would be having enough payload to tow an airstream or similar RV. I already have a 2018 F150 with about 1500lbs of payload. Between the tongue weight of the trailer (~800 lbs) plus 4 people and a dog, there is not much left for any gear in the bed. I would have assumed that the batteries in the hybrid would eat into payload even more. Is that true or does the truck have the same payload as a normal F150? Would love to see them put this hybrid system into an F250 Diesel.

Our payload is 1289, we tow a 25 ft Airstream Excella and she tows like a dream. As far as how the hybrid payload compares to a regular F150, I don’t know the answer to that. It’s so hard to find the “true” payload online, so I’m depending on the sticker inside the door. Hope this helps!

@jlokanis 2 года назад
@@GoranandJen Thanks! Do you know what the tongue weight of your Airstream is? We looked at a 27' FB with 790 lbs of tongue weight dry. With gear and water I would expect it to be 900-1000 lbs. If we add in 4 people plus a dog, that is another ~600 lbs and we are now over the capacity of our current F150. No room left for anything in the bed, like bikes, firewood, camp chairs, etc. I guess I will need to wait for them to bring the hybrid to the 3/4 ton trucks or just get a separate generator. I do love the idea of having it integrated though and not having to carry a gas can.

I was thinking about this test on the way home the other day. For the person familiar with generators, and you as I can well imagine, this fuel consumption is fairly predictable. An interesting question is : why does a two cylinder generator consume very close to the same amount of fuel as that V8 under the same conditions . A very interesting video would be a deep dive into KW/HP hours vs BTUs and BTUs in fuel (Gasoline). As I have said before "Don't fear the inner "Geek". There are PLENTY of people out here whos minds hunger to have this question answered, feed them!

Great question! I think a huge gain in the efficiency of the V-6 over the 2 cylinder generator is the battery pack on the Ford - since it's a hybrid, it's ensuring as much generated energy as possible is actually being put to use instead of shed. While the v-6 is on, it's powering everything and charging the battery - when the battery is full, the v-6 cuts and power is pulled from the battery. If power consumption drops, the v-6 is off longer. Conversely a 2 cylinder gene has to be on a least in it's lowest idle all the time, so it's not as efficient as it could be. A holy grail would be a hybrid generator :)

@@the_average_backpacker Sorry, not even close. I can't come close to explaining it here, but there is no "hocus pocus" or any other magic in converting KW/hours to horsepower to BTUs to gallons of gas burned. The bigger engine has a little more overhead, but that too can be factored in. With Respect, this is why engineers design things and wishful tinkerers don't. This is the preview of science and math. For the record, it IS fun.

@kettch42
@kettch42 Год назад
@@the_average_backpacker I agree with you. Because of the battery pack, the engine doesn't have to run at low capacity. When the battery runs low, the engine turns on and can run at 50% power, or whatever the efficient load is, to charge the battery and then shut off again. It's not hocus pocus like Dana thinks... that says more about his/her understanding than it says about your take.

So I’ve read recent articles on how idling a gas engine is hard on the engine because of low oil pressure at idle, supposedly it’s hard on bearings etc..? I wonder if there’s any truth to this? Will running the onboard power that causes the engine to idle off and on periodically shorten the engine life? I don’t know one way or the other but it’s something to think about

Definitely something to think about. I wouldn’t recommend powering your home or RV for an extended period of time using the system but it’s nice to have the option if there’s an emergency situation. They aren't going to get far, because as soon as they turn it off they'll need the fob to restart it, but I could still see this as a potential problem. The powerboost in generator mode seems to be a bigger problem because the motor turns itself on and off as needed anyway... Example, someone smashing out your windows and driving off in your truck. As long as they don't shut it off and keep the fuel tanks full, the hybrid motor will kill the engine automatically while parked and that could be days or weeks as long as they don't let the hybrid battery run dry or forget to turn leave the truck in the on position, someone could get away with your brand new vehicle.

I really don’t think one could honestly say that the 3.0 diesel would outlive a properly maintained 3.5EB. Imagine the diesel having to regen it’s DPF (and running 20 minutes to do it, using an additional 1 gallon of fuel to do it. Plus the strain on the EGR system, cooling system, not to mention DEF consumption the whole time. It’s safe to say that a 3.5 can go 250,000 miles easily with good maintenance. And you get none of the baggage with it that the 3.0 Lion would bring. (For reference; I own a 22 f250 6.7 Powerstroke and a 21 f150 3.5 standard ecoboost. I’ve owned three 3.5EB f150s and now on my 2nd 6.7 Powerstroke) For a generator, you want a 3.5. Ford knew what they were doing. Oh, one more thing...the truck is sitting stationary... and regen would create incredible tailpipe exhaust temps (700F) ....and it’s fire/burn hazard while camping.
