So essentially you’re just using 1 hot leg instead of both. If you broke that plug open you’d see the one leg goes nowhere

Nope, you are correct. You in essence using up to 30 amps, yet only 110v. Just like your average house plug in. The amps aren't sending all that amperage, the camper draws up to 30 amps. Easy peasy. Nice chat last night-for those that aren't watching those live streams, they missing out.

Lol, on the trucks dash in your previous video it showed you only drawing power through circuit B. You have 2 circuits at 120v each, A and B. Each circuit can draw 30 amps at 120v. The "Dryer plug" on the truck combines circuits A and B. The Amazon adapter just happens to use circuit B only for 120v 30 amps. Theoretically you could draw 60 amps at 120v split between the circuits, (like running 2 campers) which is the same as 240v at 30 amps. As long as the voltage multiplied by amperage equals less than 7200 (Watts) you are good to go.
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 3 года назад
That's a really interesting thought on what the truck shows for power. Theoretically then, you could only use a welder and not have, say, a cordless drill battery charging on the 110v since you are using both circuits to run the welder. I haven't done a test like that. Hmm...

Take a Volt/Ohm meter and check the continuity of the prongs on one side to those on the other side of the plug adapter. That will tell you what is connected to what. The "extra" prong on the twist lock side is either going to go nowhere or it is ganged together with one of the female inlets on the other side. i.e. two of the male prongs may be continuous to a single inlet prong on the female side. If my memory serves me right, I believe to use two 115V supplies to create a 230V supply you have to have the 115V supplies either in or out of phase with each other. Can't remember which... I've had countless discussions on this adapter stuff with my son, who is an EE PE... i.e professional electrical engineer. I wanted to use two 115V outlets in my kitchen to create a 230V outlet for a commercial toaster. My electrician said you could do that as long as they both on a different circuit. I got a 115V toaster instead... They do a lot of strange things with electrical adapters including making suicide cords... i.e. male plugs on both ends... for backfeeding power to your breaker box from an external power source. Just because it works doesn't mean its safe. Your Pro Power outlets are not a "generator" output, they are simply output from an inverter that is creating AC power form the hybrid DC battery. A generator power source is a LOT different.

To clarify… Voltage is not equivalent to flow… it’s more equivalent to pressure. Amperage is more similar to flow… albeit not a perfect comparison in any way. The inverter onboard is there to take the DC power from the battery (can only store DC power, not AC) to AC for the plug not to power the electronics onboard. There IS another inverter that allows the high voltage generator /batter to also supply the 12v system charge and amperage but this is a DC to DC voltage regulator more than an inverter I suppose.

Your adapter used the voltage across one of the phases and neutral (120VAC), and not across both phases (which would be 240VAC). The power that comes to your house has the same setup! In your house some of your circuits are on one phase and the others are on the other one. Each phase comes as a sine wave perfectly out of phase with one another (180° to be all nerdy about it).

The 220 v 30amp will draw 24 amps at 80% load, only exception if it’s a resistive load ie. heater can draw and rate at 100%, this is for buildings. Code rule should apply to the truck. In your test of the rv plugged in 120v at 30amps, will draw 24amps at 80% load. I suggest plug in a heater put a clamp amp probe to the cord and see what the heater draws. Same for the rv.
@paulbram2
@paulbram2 2 года назад
The amps are not a useful measurement in this situation. The 30 amps is available on each of two hot legs on your 240v output. So basically, you are just dropping one of the hot legs which turns it into a standard 120v 30a plug. Technically your truck supports two 30 amp outputs at 120v each. Or, one 30a output at 240v. Long story short, watts are a more useful measurement of power than amps IMO since you don't have to mess around with math. :)

Normally it would be 15 amps per leg 120VAC @15amps times two; 240/30 amps. But the plug basically cuts one leg and only delivers voltage on one leg, but the amperage potential draw is 30 AMPS. I'm wondering if the truck output can deliver the additional potential 15 AMPS without suffering sme damage?

Thanks for the video Tim. I have done the same test on my truck. I do understand the 120v vs the 240v with the adapter only using one leg of the 240v plug and only getting the 120v out. With myself not knowing how the Amps work, my big question was if we still get the 30 amps while only using the one leg of the 240v plug? Or does it drop down to 20 amps like the two 120v plugs? Another question for the electricians, should I install a "Soft Start" on my camper AC unit? It's a single ac unit camper with 30 Amp service.
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 3 года назад
Those are good questions to be honest. You could try hooking things up and seeing how many amps you can draw using the onboard watts screen. I’ve heard of lots of guys saying soft start is the way to go on a/c.
@Duane14
@Duane14 3 года назад
30 amps just refers to fuse or breaker on that circuit. Whether you pulling 240v or 120v you'll get 30amps out of that outlet before it fries the fuse or trips the breaker. (I'm guessing ford put in a breaker) 120v will just produce half the wattage of power as opposed to the 240v. Volts x Amps = Watts(actual amount of electrical power)

I was hoping to learn how often the engine started while using your camper with the air conditioning running. One of the problems I see is that you're potentially using about 3500 Watts on one leg of 120 volts, which leads me to believe we don't know which of the other 120 volt sockets are available for the other 3500 watts available of the 240 volt system. The inverter/generator cannot produce 7000 watts at 120 volts. It can only produce 3500 watts on one leg and 3500 watts on the other. That I see as a potential problem, that no one has addressed.
@Pickuptrucktalk

I addressed the engine starting in the other video. I’m a bit confused by your other question. Once you plug into the 240v with the adapter, there is no other leg available. It goes away and grounds out in the plug.

That is pretty lucky. 4 prong to 3 prong adapters typically drop the neutral lead not a hot lead, because 240v stuff doesn't use a neutral. 3 prong 240v plugs are 2 hot leads and a ground, no neutral. Pretty lucky that that thing dropped a hot lead and not a neutral wire. I'd probably check it with a volt meter anyway, because some appliances do run on anything a/c between 110v-250v... so there's a chance you were running 240 and your stuff was just able to handle it anyway, it would've just used half the amps then.
