Recently we published an epic 75 minutes towing comparison video featuring 4 different powertrains from 4 different manufacturers. Some people found 75 minutes of Tim just a bit too much to digest at one time, so we've split that video up in to 4 bite size pieces, each focusing on one truck.
In the first video of this series, see how the 2021 Ford F-150 King Ranch with PowerBoost Hybrid engine performed in our tow test, towing a travel trailer over Wildcat Hills in Nebraska.

It doesn’t seem to matter what kind of gas engine you have, V6 N/A, V6 turbo, gas/hybrid’s, or V8, ect, they all get similar mileage while towing. Half tons are designed for occasional towing, so the mileage you get while not towing is what sets them apart. Some might have much more power for towing, but the mileage will still suck while towing. Wind will be one of the biggest factors while towing a travel trailer. You can’t beat a diesel if you do enough towing to make it worthwhile.

best of the best. Best towing experience. Best combined gas mpg's. Best half ton truck. Ok, FORD has built a fantastic truck!!

I have the 2021 xlt version f150 hybrid. Bought in Jan 2022 with 7000 miles on it. Replaced a 2004 Suburban 5.3L. Monster difference in power and hopefully towing. Have not towed my 34 ft coachman 293RLDS YET. Looking forward to doing that tow. I do average 24 mpg or better around town and 26+ doing 65mph on the highway using cruise/autonomous mode. Faster than that drops mpg quickly.

Ford needs to build an answer to the new Ramcharger that is coming out. That concept is superior IMO.

If you get the chance a Canadian rv dealer shows towing with a Tesla, they are called Can Am RV. I have a 2022 King Ranch F150 with the powerboost and it’s capable of towing a Airstream Flying cloud bunk model the key is it has to be set up properly. All of these factory numbers are confusing to say the least it’s no wonder people don’t tow proper set up vehicles. Great video I appreciate you.

Not as daunting as the Ike Gauntlet, but more reflective of the type of towing I do. Thanks for the content and I look forward to the other truck tests for comparison. It would be good to know the weight of the trucks, also, and I know the King Ranch Powerboost will likely be the heaviest.

Interesting comment about the tow mirrors Tim, thanks. My Lariat Powerboost was built last week. I was going to sell the optional tow mirrors on one of my existing F150s I'm trading in. Now, I may keep these mirrors and just re-install the stock mirrors on the truck to be traded in and install my high tow mirrors on the upcoming Powerboost. Not sure what the "tow mirrors" on the new Powerboost will be like.... The more I watch these F150 videos and drive other trucks, the more I understand why the F150 is used as the benchmark by others. Ford really did nail it on the F150. For 40+ years we've always included a mix of Ford and Chevs in our fleet. We'll continue to do that but am now also looking at including one Ram. The new Tundra does not interest me at all, both from a mechanical trust standpoint and certainly a design/appeal standpoint.

TFL truck tested the power boost on the Ike gauntlet and it got hot and went into limp mode. Apparently tow ratings are reduced at higher elevations for that truck.
@biz4twobiz463
@biz4twobiz463 2 года назад
absolutely. actually most truck manufacturers reduce MAX towing at 11,000 plus ft in elevation. Plus, only using the 91 octane do you get FULL HP and TORQUE figures. Running at 87...you get reduced performance.

Honestly the only real safe way to tow a trailer is in the slow lane with cruise control set that you don't have to pass anything. Overall, the gas milage will be better, driving will be safer. You will save on braking because your vehicle will gear down on hills. Of course, you do need to pass an occasional vehicle that may be going super slow but not so much. It's funny how many people really do the speed limit to the max and even speed with trailers attached. It's just not safe. Owner's manuals will tell you to reduce speeds as much as 20%. It's a bit much and some lower speed roads the speed limit is fine, but not when you are in 75 MPH highways out west.

@@Pickuptrucktalk Thanks! Was really looking into the 2022 F150 but hearing about the underbody rust issue and some removals from the 2021 model year (no more cupholder ambient lighting, removal of the ratcheting headrest and removal of digital temp readouts on the dials) are kind of a bummer.

You use 87 octane at 3400 ft elevation which is 91 in Myrtle Beach, SC at sea level. 85 octane at ur equal to my 87. The truck is made for 85 at your elevation. Just saying. Pretty sure that is how the octane and thinner air work.

Getting 10.5 MPG's @ 64 MPH with 2.7T 4 Cylinder GMC crew cab 2020 (2 WH drive) Towing 6,047 lbs Travel trailer 8ft wide 10ft tall. Appreciate these vids with real world use by towing a Travel Trailer with fuel 87 octane. I have the new TT (Travel Trailer.) Imagine XLS 22mle Dry Weight 5,287 7lbs our total passenger & gear 6,047Lbs our GMC Elevation 2.7T 4cyc crew cab 2 wheel drive; actually managed better in the Tennessee hills @ 55- 60 MPH getting 11.8 MPG'S perhaps due to it's low end torque and the down hills We had our friends on this trip they're towing with a Chevy 2021 crew cab V8 towing similar TT slightly lighter by 400lbs and both TT's are 8ft wide and we were both using 87th octane which is popular here on the East Cost; Yet we were astonished at my fuel MPG's the V8 was getting in the hills 8.5 mpg's @ roughly same speeds staying behind me at a distance and overall avg at 64 mph entire 940 miles at 10.2 mpg's; But much lower in the Tennessee Hills. My lease is up in 12 mts and have my eyes on the F150'Hybrid due to its Lithium generation of 7.2 KlLW for dry camping two nights to crank A/C at night if needed on low settings. And as a daily driver here in Miami when not towing allot of city driving; would like to see 21-23 where as i'm getting now 17-18 on avg with the A/C always on.

Tim, Just finished the F-150 video. What a great idea. The TFL Truck guys can be a little tough to take, and they simply aren't as knowledgeable as you. Plus, they are obviously partisan with certain models which I find irritating. I much prefer your vlogs, and the data is more reliable and way less woke than TFL (the fat bald guy thinks he's Hunter S. Thompson). Going to watch the other 3 videos now.

So a brand new hybrid f150 that cost over 70k doesn't get significantly better gas mileage than my 08 6" lift Tundra on 35 toyo tires when towing ? I get 7.6 mpg towing my 8k enclosed trailer from Tucson to Glamis and back (700 plus miles). Of course I am towing that load at 70 mph because the speed limited is 75 mph. So the new Tundra hybrid and f150 would be worst than my v8 truck under real life towing conditions? My son's f250 6.7 desiel tows that trailer and get 12 mpg at those speeds. I guess when you tow in real world conditions with actual heavy trailers the new half trucks are not really any better. Btw I drive a bmw that gets 30 to 35 mpg when running errands around town so I don't need my truck to become a Pruis in the city just great mpg when towing is all I need in a truck.
@stang-rv4pb

Half tons are often used as everyday vehicles, that do occasional towing. I get anywhere between 7, and 12 mpg with my 2014 F150 ecoboost while towing my 8000 lb travel trailer, wind conditions being the biggest factor. The rest of the time, while not towing, I enjoy a decent ride, with decent fuel mileage. If I towed everyday, I would probably get a 3/4 ton diesel, and own a second commuter car.
@michaelr1760
@michaelr1760 2 года назад
@@stang-rv4pb I don't need to upgrade to a 70k EcoBoost because when towing they clearly don't get significantly better fuel economy than my old 08 Tundra. When I don't tow I drive 1 of my other vehicles that ride much better, are faster , and get far better fuel economy. I will evidently keep my old truck and spend 70k+ on something else based on these piss poor numbers.
@stang-rv4pb
@stang-rv4pb 2 года назад
Whatever works for you. Some people only have room for one vehicle, most new half tons offer luxurious interior’s, good mileage while not towing, comfortable rides, are very practical, and in the case of the F150, ecoboost, it can sprint to 60 mpg in the low 5 second range and pull off a 1/4 mile time under 14 seconds, with a trap speed of almost 100 mph, that is with a 4x4 crew cab non hybrid model. Not to shabby for a vehicle that can also tow a good sized trailer. Talk about a good all purpose vehicle.
