While we were driving without the camera rolling JB made a u-turn and there was a guy in a mid 90s Ford dually in the traffic right behind us and his jaw literally dropped when he saw how tight we turned!

I find it a little bit funny that everyone talks about how great the F-450 wide track front axle is when it comes to turning radius when the curb to curb turning diameter for the 2017-2022 MY F-450 is 50.4 feet and the 2013-2018 Ram 3500 Crew cab Long Box has a curb to curb turning diameter of 49.2 feet. The F-350 is just a joke when it comes to turning. F-350 CCLB is 57.8 feet and a short box is 53.0 feet. The F-450 couldn't turn around on one of the jobsites without a 3 point turn where the the 2014 Ram 3500 CCLB could do it but just barely. The 2020 F-450 also has a longer nose which makes the wall to wall turning diameter even worse than the Ram. I'm in no way knocking the F-450. Just pointing out that the turning diameter is not best in class.

@aaronolsen8787 I wonder if the 450 with the adaptive steering option turns tighter. Justin and I did a turning circle with my 450 and his Ram Short Bed 3500 SRW and the 450 came within 3 inches of turning completely inside the Ram. We have that on video but never released it but if I can find the footage I'll put out a video. Also I had a 22 F-450 Platinum last week with the adaptive steering and drove it near my house and towed one of my trailers in a tight area and was amazed again how much easier it was to maneuver than my Silverado 3500.
@aaronolsen8787
@aaronolsen8787 Год назад
@@hitchedtohorsepower The adaptive steering makes no difference in turning radius. They are both limited to a max steering angle of 45° due to the steering geometry of the axle setup. The F-250/350 have a steering angle of 38° I believe which is why the F-450 turns so much better with its ~6" wider axle. The GM CCLB has a curb to curb turning diameter of 56.1 feet which is just a bit better than an F-350 but no where near an F-450. So I'm not suprised at that. The 4th gen (2013-2018) 3500's have a better turning circle if they are 4x4 trucks, the 4x2 are 4 feet worse in the CCLB variety. The 4.5 gen (2019-2023) are also worse but now the 4x2 and 4x4 versions have the same turning circle. A 4.5 gen CCLB has a curb to curb turning diameter of 53.5 feet. So an F-450 will turn sharper now against a newer Ram. These are all based on stock offset wheels and tire (width). If the CCSB Ram you tested the F-450 against had a 0 or even worse a negative offset it would probably turn worse than an F-450. Especially if it had wider tires. So if the F-450 turned sharper that would be my guess as to why. Either that or he didn't have the steering cranked on the Ram. I had installed 0 offset wheels and tires as a summer set and couldn't turn around in places that I was used to turning around no problem. My stock offset is +44 IIRC. Those didn't last long, as it just made maneuvering so much more difficult. I couldn't believe it. That was with the same 275 stock width tire on there as well. The wheels were an 18x9 vs the factory 18x8 I believe. I can tell you for a fact though that my 2014 Ram 3500 CCLB 4x4 with stock wheels and tires turns sharper than a 2017+ F-450. Not by much though. I'm definitely not knocking the F-450, they are an amazing truck. They just won't turn as good as a 2013-2018 Ram 2500 or 3500. They'll turn sharper than GM or Ford CCSB 3500's/350's though which is pretty amazing.

F450 is king of the heavy duty trucks, plain and simple. 6.7, wide track front axle, 4.30 gears is just an unstoppable pulling force. The stability you get with a dually is incredible. F450 was more truck than I needed, I am truly enjoying the 21 F-350 Tremor 6.7. Ram has a great platform, and I'd say this again, Ram 6.7 cummins is stiff competition for Ford, but the F-450 is just the king of the jungle! Thanks for the videos!

Not really. Be ready to spend about $12k to $15k when the fuel system gives out after the warranty period is up. Or, something else. I'm a Ford fan and worked as a tech at a couple dealerships but all the newer diesels just have too many problems. WAYYYYYYYY too many. It's not just brand dependent. It's ALL of them. Don't get so caught up in the high power numbers. Sure, the power is nice to have but is it worth it if you have to shell out around $15k for a repair or possibly more if the engine goes? If you're prepared for these high repair bills, then buy one and be happy. But if you think you're going to have 200k repair free miles or even 100k repair free miles, you will be lucky to get 100k or more without something major happening.

I'm a Dodge and Ford guy, with my top truck being a 2015 Dodge dually with Cumming HO and Assin R69 trans at 277k, and great exhaust brake. The benefits of the F450 is the wide heavier duty front end on heavier hubs ,10 bolt, bigger rear end, plus 14 ply tires on 19 5 inch rims plus bigger brakes, with better turning radius. One disadvantage is the superior exhaust brake by Dodge, so both are very impressive trucks and pick the one which best performed tasks at hand

Still no replacement for being able to back a trailer up but it might be a nice example of helpful tech!

Not apples to apples in terms of performance, stability, etc but in terms of price the MSRPs are darn close. When I was shopping lots of the Rams were right there in the high 80s to even low 90s even with a single rear wheel! To be fair I think Ram will deal a bit where the F-450s are so hard to find rn that the dealers are saying you want it you pay sticker or even a bit more. Thankfully through some connections I got Ford Executive pricing but don't think that played into my choice of Ford because I can get that pricing for almost any manufacturer (it's good to have powerful automotive industry friends 😁)!

Love the 450, always have. The 250/350 still suffers from the death wobble so I would go 450. One negative thing is the interior is cheap plastic and outdated but that will change soon to match the new 150 interior. But that equals significant higher cost making this 90k truck a 100k truck. Great job as usual, JB.

Damn, he made such a brilliant argument. I don’t need a 450 but why not? Lol better to have the overkill. I totally agree with that. The pricing on the 450 is so competitive as well if you’re looking at entry level with the stx or xlt.you can get them for 65ish-67k. That’s nice. I need to see if I could live with a vinyl interior vs cloth vs leather. All I need is comfortable seats since I’ll be driving a ton. Cabin comfort will be important. I would definitely keep the wheels and just make the tires more beefy. I love the 450 stock rims. No one can touch rams exhaust brake though. But this was such a beautiful and honest head to head. What’s even more impressive about Ford is their engine and transmission are designed and built in house. That might be why Ford trucks perform so well, everything is designed to work together.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 3 года назад
Ford uses this as a advantage but I think it’s a good thing to collaborate with outside companies especially ones known for its history in the diesel business. I remember when Lexus collaborated with Yamaha to build the V10 in the LFA and that’s hands down the best sounding most respected engine ever built. I do agree that the Fords powertrain work hand and hand better then RAM’s currently 👍🏾
@khakiswag
@khakiswag 3 года назад
@@JB_WhoWork Ford is like Apple, where their devices are optimized because the software and hardware are designed to work together. In Ford’s case the engine, transmission and powertrain computers are all optimized to work together since they’re exclusively used in Ford trucks. Whereas Ram has a Cummins engine mated to a Toyota transmission. It works but they were never designed to work together. Also, Yamaha has been making engines for Toyota since the ‘60’s. They have also made engines for Ford, the original Taurus SHO.

You say that until you drive 600 to 700 miles a day. I'll be honest, I wanted my friends 2002 F-350 7.3 with the 6-speed manual but after hauling a few times with my 2002 F-350 with the 6.8 V-10 with 4-speed auto, I think I would get tired of having to change gears with my hands so much. I know that being able to control the RPM range or power seems like a great thing with a manual but I think you would have to admit that it would get old changing gears all the time if you were towing something every day or even once a week. I bought a 2007 F-250 with the 6.8 with the newer Torqushift 5-speed auto and I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in power from the older 6.8 (2-valve in my 2002) to the newer 3-valve version in the 2007 and the additional gear in the transmission. I think both of those things together will make my desire to have a 6-speed manual go out the window. I'm just commenting because I am really a fan of the 6-speed in my friend's 2002 F-350 but I think I would get tired of changing gears all the time.

Awesome review. You guys are dead on with the dually towing impressions. I’ve said it for years. The 3/4 and 1 ton SRW trucks are superior to 1/2 tons but at the end of the day they are still just pickups. A dually is made for this and it really makes towing feel like nothing is back there. I also think you are selling your trailer a little short on how much a load it truly is. Pushing 10,000 pounds with that much tongue weight is a load. Bumper pulls tongue weight is worse than a fivers hitch weight because it’s so far behind the axle. Plus your trailer is pushing 35’ counting the tongue. Now my observation about the Fords performance is i couldn’t really see a major difference in acceleration which I wasn’t truly expecting too. However I will say based off my truck I think mine downshifts more and gives more rpm to boot. However I think that might be due to gearing and that’s something people don’t think about. That 4.30:1 don’t have room to downshift too much or it would redline the truck. I think a 3.55:1 or 3.73:1 would actually perform better at that task. Great video. I subbed his channel. Looking forward to seeing some videos from him. He seems like a cool knowledgeable guy about towing and trucks. Also I’m interested in what other horsepower he has lol.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 3 года назад
Yup and you are spot on, nothing comes close to a dually and this video showed this! I’m looking forward to towing heavier (a lot heavier) with his and my truck! Interesting point, Chevy went with the 3.42 with their 10 speed and I honestly think with the high gear ratio, a higher axle may not be necessary. I’m sure he appreciates the support 👍🏾👍🏾
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 3 года назад
I think that was their reasoning and they are doing that across the board too. Even the half tons they went with a 3.23:1 for normal trucks and maybe 3.42:1 for the max tow trucks with 10 speeds. Like my truck even just driving it empty with the exhaust brake on if I tip the brakes it almost instantly downshifts and then I end up having to give it gas because it gets too slow. Sometimes I just leave the exhaust brake off because of that.

Well yeah because the F450 is such a beast that's why. Even though GM and Ram doesn't have to make anything like the F450 dually they have plenty of hauling power especially the ram with the high output cummins that one's still impressive even though it comes close but yeah ford just keeps going hard af and I guess they got sick and tired of hearing "Found On the Road Dead" or "Fixed Or Repaired Daily" and the engineers stepped their game up big time. And look how powerful they haul with a horse trailer that sucker still hauls like it's nothing with a horse trailer and passes people up easily like that F450 is a machine. Ford is really getting reliable when it comes to simple power. But I'm also a ram guy too I'm both Ford and Ram and maybe Toyota for full size trucks.

@@matthewr3986 EGTs are a good example of overall health. The cluster will give you engine oil temp but usually not coolant temp, the position of the vanes in the variable turbos if you start noticing that it's slow to change under throttle that can give you a hint that there's some sticking which if you catch that early you might be able to save the turbo. Fuel in the rail temp for driving in extremely cold weather will let you know if you need to be adding anti-gel or is the fuel system doing its job. Also just the trans fluid, engine oil, and coolant temp right in front of you at all times no matter what you're using the cluster for might give you a few minutes warning of a problem an that could save a motor or transmission. The CTS3 also allows you to manually regenerate the diesel exhaust filter which is the biggest reliability problem with all newer diesel. The computer should keep up on it but sometimes it doesn't. We know how we've driven our trucks and more importantly might know what we're about to do so if we know we are about coming into a city at rush hour but have 30 minutes of highway driving regen the filter so it never gets to full because they are ridiculously expensive if they fail. On my Jeep Ecodiesel mine went out at 90k miles and the dealer said it's not covered by warranty and it was $5,000 to replace if nothing broke while it was being done and they said most likely something would break!

Do you have a CDL? Im guessing your trailer GVWR is over 12K and the F-450 is 14K (puts you over 26K GCWR pretty fast). That is the biggest problem with a dually for me.
@hitchedtohorsepower
@hitchedtohorsepower 3 года назад
Most trailers manufacturers like this rate the GVWR at 9,900 or so to avoid several problems. It also helps people that want to park their trailers at their homes. HOAs of course make their own rules but in most areas that have laws about parking in residential areas if the trailer is rated at 10k or more it's commercial and can't be parked but under 10k your free to do what you want. My trailer has 2 5200lb axles so it's only rated slightly under but I've seen ones with 2 7k axles that the manufacturer will let you option a sub 10k GVWR. Also if DOT pulls you over and suspect your over 26k they have to stick it on the scales, if you're not over 26k you are fine without a CDL. Another thing to keep in mind is a 1 ton single rear wheel is actually rated to tow slightly more than a DRW because the truck weights less and the suspension is basically the same. The duals don't add towing capacity just stability, which is huge if you're towing a lot.

Big thing is replace the fuel filter often, every 10k or so. Better yet but an aftermarket larger fuel filter on. I haven't put any aftermarket parts on this truck yet except for the Edge Products CTS3 and that only monitors the truck it doesn't alter anything. On my 06 Silverado 3500 Duramax a huge Cat fuel filter was one of the first things I did and I think it helped a lot. Right know I think that I'm siding with the RAM and the CP3. Even though I love the turning radius of the F 450.

It also pays to have a great relationship with a time shop that will take the tires off the wheels to rotate them every 10k miles and they should go 120k miles 🤞. Most of the Rams I priced out were within a couple grand for 3500. The GMs are quite a bit cheaper and while I was tempted to save the ten grand I figured I tend to keep trucks for 10 to 15 years so over that the extra wasn't as much of a factor. Plus if I do decide to get rid of it the 450s take the amazing resale of all diesel trucks and does even better.
