Thank you for the great videos, they definitely helped me in deciding on the purchase of my new John Deere. I ended up going with the S180, and have zero regrets!
This was one of the best reviews videos I've seen, very complete and informative + some tips.Would have liked to see deck installed.Just looked at this model, thats what brought me to the video.
My first and only John Deere to date was a new 318 bought in 1987. Today the engine finally gave up the ghost. After a brief mourning period, I've been searching for a replacement and I think you have showed me the way with this video! Liked and subscribed! One question left, what's involved in installing and removing the deck? It had become something of a pain for the 318. Great video. Glad I found you!
Sad to hear your 318 kicked the bucket. Those were GREAT mowers! I'm glad I could help you with your decision on a replacement though. I have videos on this channel should have to remove a few different models of decks that should help to guide you. It is a pretty simple process. Thanks for the subscribe and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment Now I find the challenge here in upstate NY is that the s180 is nowhere to be had. Checked all Lowe's and JD dealers within reach but all are out of stock with no idea about timeframes for getting more. I really want/need the larger deck, but not for thousands more to get a higher series. And the grass is growing fast! Maybe I should get sheep? Are you hearing anything about a general lack of availability for these machines?
I have a john deere S170 quick change oil. My understanding is the engine holds 2 qt and the oil filter only holds one. So you're really only changing half the oil with the quick change system.
Question regarding the transaxle…… is this transaxle stronger than the k46? Bc i know that having the k46 with the bigger tires like on the old L120 and L130’s that just having the bigger tires makes that transaxle work harder just to make it move, therefore There were a ton of failures, which led to a K58 retrofit…. Similar to trying to start pedalling on a bicycle on a higher speed than in the low speed.
I misspoke in this video, this is the K46 transaxle. I can say that I have not heard of any failures recently on these transaxles though. I completely understand your concern though. Thanks for watching!
Hi I'm new but I don't my john deere tractor it was missing the hod and its has a 21hp with 48 inch deck its a la100 series do you know witch machine is it
I haven't bought a new mower in a LONG time. I currently have an LX288. Can you tell me whether or not the S180 would be a worthly successor to it or should I be looking at something else. The LX288 has the B&S Vanguard engine. While the rest of the mower is showing its age, that engine is going strong. Will the S180 last?
Do I really need a zero-turn mower? Does it save that much time over the tractor style? I'd rather save the $2000 difference. I have about 3-4 acres. Property is virtually flat with a very small grade. Mostly open.... but may be planting trees in future.
Not purely cosmetic, the hand hold can be used if trying to move the equipment by hand or to help sturdy yourself on a hill. Good question and thanks for watching!
Yes, if you want to keep your blades engaged. You only have to push it to start going in reverse and then you can let off. But any time you want to go in reverse and keep your blades on you do have to push the button. Good question and thanks for watching!
I've been looking at a John Deere rider mower that has a 20 hp Kawasaki engine on it was a radiator could you give me any kind of a suggestion on what size are model number it is
The deck has grease Zirks. However aren’t they using seal bearings. So there for the grease zirks are there to make you think your greasing it. In all out reality you can grease all you want and your not actually greasing the deck hub bearings.
This is true but check out this video. I explain why you still want to grease these spindles. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l1fr_ebsXDc.html
I always enjoy your videos Brent. I was wondering if you could get a hold of a x394 mower for a review. There's very few videos with that mower. I'm looking to buy one and my local dealers don't keep that model on hand. Lots of x350, x380, and x390s seem to be the most popular models kept on hand. Thanks!
I would not recommend it. I would be looking into something larger with a heavier frame and transmission. Probably up into the X500 or X700 series for this kind of work.
@@WesternEquipment I gotcha. But made me laugh and start to think. "Am I not seeing something here?" Great video though. I'm in the market and these videos of the S100/200 and X series have been a big help. Have an LT150 or 153 and it's pretty worn. Time to upgrade.
I have a S240, is there a upgrade to replace the mechanical fuel float to that digital one? Would that mess up your current hour meter? I like that feature
How is it on hills? Do both rear wheels get power (locking axle) or just a one wheel spin? I have a slope on the side of my house and when the up hill tire gets lite it just spins. So my next tractor NEEDS to at least have a locking rear axle option
great video! Confused here a tad, you state that this S 180 has the very lightweight T200 hydrostat transaxle, the John Deere website specifications for the S 170 and S180 have the slightly stronger K46, however that is still a very lightweight transaxle itself, but much better than the T200. I am a little disappointed at John Deere carrying that lightweight K46 even on several X300 series , with a few of them having the K57 and K58 series which is still a fairly lightweight transaxle! I was researching to buy a replacement mower for my 20 year old John Deere LX188, which has a much stronger K61 transaxle,, seems like John Deere has succumb to the lower quality trend to reach a lower price point. in mid duty mowers,, Apparently the only way to get a good strong transaxle in John Deere is to buy the X500 or X 700 series,, very pricy machines just to use as a designated grass cutter machine.
The T200 and the K46 are basically the same exact thing, if you look at them side by side you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. The 170 and 180 have a lower final drive ratio because of the larger wheels but otherwise everything else is the same as the smaller models. Yes, transmissions are a major cost cutting area for manufacturers, they are just strong enough to get the job done and last the 120 hour warranty period. I change the fluid in mine every 100 hours since they are being worked hard.
I just got an S180 at home depot they delivered it it was hard to find In Canada 🇨🇦 the local john deere dealer said if you can get one buy it so happy I got it 👍
Hopefully soon! Inventory is hard to get ahold of right now so I have been limited on mowers I can do. Keep checking back and hopefully I can get one out soon. Thanks for watching!
Check this video out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OabpKHomjuM.html and yes it should be fine for that amount of cutting. Thanks for watching
Thank you, I'm glad I could help. I haven't used the S140 specifically but I have used 100 series models with the 48" deck and I think they do a great job. Here is a video of me mowing with one with a 48" deck ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QSkGdjTL0jM.html. Maybe this will help you out as well. Thanks for watching!
This is a good question. I have yet to get to use a snowblower. Being that we are in Oklahoma, we usually only see snow a couple of times a year and it's usually not around for very long. I will see what I can find out though. Thanks for watching!
The new filter comes with .8 qts. So that does leave 1.2 qts. in the engine but if service is done timely then this has proven to not be an issue so far. The filter is also larger than your standard filter so it is able to collect more contaminants. At any rate this system can always be converted back to a normal drain and filter system.
Great job, I bought the rear bagger for my S180 and all the direction for putting it on came on a 8x10 single piece of paper, I tried my best to get it on and had to add an extension pulley to make it work. It's been sitting in my garage for over a year I'm sure I biffed it trying to put it together but there was a lot of info that just wasn't on the sheet of paper. I now have a unused $1000.00 paper weight sitting in my garage. Just wondering if anyone has gotten this 2 bag rear bagger to work? or did I burn a grand? Blessings
Darn, I wish I had an install video for the bagger on the S180 so I could help you out. Maybe I can make this happen so it is not just taking up space. What was the part number on the bagger kit you bought? Can you email it to me so maybe I can find you better instructions? M email is brent@west-equip.com. Thanks!
It does not change all of the oil but the filter is much larger than the normal filter and if you stay within the recommended oil change intervals you should not have issues. But if you want to change back to a normal oil filter and drain system then that is available. Thanks for watching!
Man, that 54" deck is getting old! Its evolved a little bit but looks 85% the same as it did on the G110 and even further back like on the GT, GX, LX and 425/455 tractors. Still the same stamping design. Its a shame though that a G110 type tractor didn't continue on with the 100 series over the years. G110s were sweet as they were more or less a GT275 frame underneath it which made for an overbuilt entry level heavy duty tractor.
I would bet that in the near future these decks will get a re-design but you know how the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" haha. Thanks for watching!
Hi Sir do you know if i can put the gator blades on the s130,im purchasing soon, and need the mulching blades, thanks and can i get some stickers i like your western equipment logo, thanks
As long as the gator blades have the same dimensions as your original blades then they will work just fine. We are working on getting some stickers so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
Great question. I have never actually ran a snow blower on a 100 series, but from everything that I have read and have been told is the 300 series is the way to go for snow removal equipment.
I have the E180 (last years model) which is the same as the 170 just with a larger belly mower. It has been thru its first snow season in Michigan and handled it fine. I throw four residential driveways for myself and neighbors. Not a real snow heavy season so maybe sixteen total driveway cleanings, 100' each. I don't go out unless it's five or six inches of snow fall. Had a good one in January, 10"+ of dry snow. Struggled with the road commission plow that was dry packed 20+" but got it done. I feel it's worth it. Had the 2000 model with the single stage thrower and while time marches on and they do not built um like they used to I think it will be solid for maybe just as long.
@@WesternEquipment I have the E170 with the blower and it's a beast. The blower itself is just as good at the X300 one (basically it's the same core design). Traction is the only issue with the lighter mower, but I put on snowblower tires and weights and it works great. Also get the electric lift kit, makes it super easy to use. The 160+ models are also slightly more powerful than the X300 engines which is another benefit for blowing snow. Not sure why so many dealers think you need a X300+ to blow snow, the 100's do it just fine for less money.
@@Gokywildcats11 That's not true, It doesn't matter where you buy the S180, it is the same mower whether it comes from Lowes, Home Depot or your local John Deere dealer. It's just that the "S" series JD mowers are available at the big box stores, and the higher end JD's are not.
That is a good question! I am thinking John Deere figured out that the 24HP would work just as well with the 54" deck as the 25 HP would so to save customers money they went to the 24HP since prices on everything are going up.
No, these machines are really designed for mowing only 1-2 acres at a time. You'd be mowing for 6+ hours and would have to stop for fuel several times. You'd want something with a 60+ inch deck for that.
It can definitely be a tough choice. I have a video comparing the S-Series and X-Series lawnmowers. Here is the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gvAGwbO8PjI.html . Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment I seen that also.. my understanding is the x series has more comfort options but as far as he job that needs to be done the S180 will do the trick?
Haha it does look that way. There was no issue with the throttle we just use jump cuts to go from scene to scene so I left the throttle in that position when we changed scenes. Thanks for watching and good eyes lol!
Come on everyone knows the lights are for when your one your way home from your buddies down the street half drunk at 3am. You don’t want to go thru your garage ppl 😂
When you change that oil filter, your changing just the filter and a little bit of oil!! Most of the oil in the engine isNOT being changed. So no, you have not done a oil change. Please let your viewers know that! That mower needs a conversion kit to actually drain the oil out.
@@WesternEquipment yeah - I've been torturing myself for over a week here by visiting local Deere dealer - my toro WAS good - but I don't fancy replacing transaxles every 5 yrs
The big oil filter is a very bad idea , engine holds over 60 oz of oil ,,but the oil filter holds about a little over 20'oz ,,that leaves a lot of dirty oil left in the engine ,,,!!
Yes the Filter comes with .8 qts. So that does leave 1.2 qts. in the engine but if service is done timely then this has proven to not be an issue so far. The filter is also larger than your standard filter so it is able to collect more contaminants. At any rate this system can always be converted back to a normal drain and filter system.
No, it works just fine, I've been using it for several years. If you change it on time the oil never gets dark or dirty because of the larger volume of oil and the superior filtration capacity. The oil always looks brand new in my engine.
