After driving the 2021 Kia Sorento for a week now, I have a question for you: How do the premium German brands differentiate themselves, into the next decade?

If you are an actual car-buyer … someone with cash and the need for seven seats, the new Sorento is good. Not perfect, but really good. Certainly far better than the notion you might have in your head when someone says ‘flagship Kia’. If you last looked at Kia in about 2010 (or even earlier) it’s time for you to re-calibrate.
In this report I’m going to lay out exactly what I like about the new Sorento - and there is a lot to like about this vehicle. But there are imperfections too, and some things it does poorly - right at the end of this report I’ll address those shortcomings.
This review is independent. Everything I say here is my honest personal opinion about the vehicle, and the company selling it.
This is the fourth generation Sorento - and all-new platform, updated diesel, all new transmission for the diesel, new interior and exterior, new infotainment OS, etc.
The diesel is a 2.2-litre turbo - an evolution of the predecessor. It’s got an aluminium block now, which shaves almost 20 kilos off the bathroom scales, and delivers hybrid-like fuel economy - 6.1 litres per 100km on the official combined cycle test, and 5.3 on the highway.
You really should consider the diesel, but if you’re a ‘petrol-only’ kind of dude or dudette, there’s a V6 petrol in the range as well.
If you’re an average sort of driver looking for a versatile SUV with five seats and a large cargo bay, or seven seats and modest cargo capacity, then Sorento V6 is a definite starter.
The diesel is definitely better - it’s smoother and more composed thanks in part to the all-wheel-drive powertrain, and also because the diesel just makes more mid- and low-rpm power. It’s also a lot more fuel efficient, but more expensive.
Sorento diesel AWD is compatible with dirt roads and easy fire trails and driving of that nature - but if you throw properly difficult terrain its way, you’ll probably break something. It’s just not designed for that.
All-wheel drive is a real plus for family camping. Like, if it rains overnight and the dirt road you drove in on turns to mush, you stand a far better chance of fronting up for work Monday morning, with AWD. If that’s you, buy the diesel.
There are four specification grades. Starting at the bottom is the ‘S’, then the ‘Sport’, ‘Sport+’ and (topping out the range) the GT-Line. And there’s an $18,000 gap between the V6 front drive ‘S’ poverty pack at about $47k drive-away, and the range topping diesel AWD GT-Line at about $65k. So, how do you make sense of that?
I’d suggest it’s like this: Bottom of the range is there to appeal to beancounters - specifically the kind of beancounters who buy vehicles by the dozen for corporate fleets. They strip out almost everything they can to get the price low.
If you’re buying for yourself, on a tight budget, take one step up because Sport is a lot better than S - and it’s only $3000 more.
Sport+ is the smart choice on value - it’s a $4500 step up. You get a proximity key with pushbutton start, power tailgate for juggling the groceries, leather, remote start, heated seats and USBs in the back.
GT-Line is the works burger - also diesel only - and it’s going to cost you about $6500 more than Sport+. It’s got everything - premium instrument cluster, blind view monitor, you can park it remotely, you get a 360 camera, and premium sound. This stuff is all nice, but can you live without it in Sport+? Yeah. Absolutely.

The wife swapped her vw alltrack for a Sorento Platinum, and I swapped my BMW for a Optima GT, best decision we have ever made, cheap to service and really surprised me with the comfort and tech. Very underated brand.

@@saauuzza Actually, I bought the Optima GT when the warranty ran out on the BMW, during the time I had the BMW, it spent a total of 46 days in the dealership getting repairs to a plethora of problems. The GT comes with a full 7 year warranty, and after 86000 km, it has only been in the dealer for routine servicing, and new tires. The same with my wifes Sorento which has 98000 km has given us zero problems, except a electronic handbrake replacement, and also has a 7 year warranty. So we are both very happy with our purchases.

I have been watching your car reviews since 2015 with interest, and I am happy to say you haven't been bought out by any car maker(s). I like how you point out the weaknesses and the imperfections in every car, not just those you don't like. A sensible, unbiased, and independent appraisal test drive by a reputable independent reviewer, gives me some idea what to look for, and what to expect prior to a test drive. Obviously, my perception maybe different in various aspects of any particular vehicle, but greatly appreciate your honest personal opinion, and independent assessment of the cars you review, and recommend.

About 4.5 years ago we bought a Kia carnival premium which was just over $60k. I remember my wife saying at the dealers that she didn’t want to spend $60k on a Kia. But 4+ years down the track and she lives her car. We have had no issues with it and it is so versatile. The quality is great and equipment levels are awesome. Like many things in life, the price is forgotten long before the experience. If you asked us exactly how much we paid, I couldn’t tell you. Sow as it too much “for a Kia”? No. It was a good price for a that meets our needs without paying a premium just for a different brand name.

@@AutoExpertJC sure is. I speak to heaps of people about their cars and what they have encountered as an owner. Everybody in my family own Kias or Hyundais bar myself. I purchased a 2005 Getz and traded it for a pile of junk mazda in 2016. I will never take my car to a mazda dealership and will only consider Kia or Hyundai as a highly recommended car with great service to others and warn everyone not to be fooled that mazda make a great car these days. All the Kias and Hyundais in my family are far superior in most areas and heaps better at customer support.

Four years ago my wife bought a V6 Sorento at the same time as my sister bought an Audi Q7. The Audi cost over twice as much but it was better in every way, until after 2 1/2 years it started breaking down- regularly. It kept running out of blue liquid nonsense and it had intermittent electrical faults. Turned out the plastic tank for the liquid wasn't even up to tupperware quality and had a crack. They never found the reason for the electrical fault so she sold it and now it is someone else's problem. My wife is still going strong in the Kia.

These sorts of stories scare me. After 19 years and 300,000 km of happy Magna motoring, I needed a replacement. Ended up with another Magna in great condition and with 150,000 km done. So far, so good! The few chimes it has (overspeed, break timer) are easy to disable.

Thanks for sharing your sisters experience with the Q7 it's unfortunate that those issues are very common on euros as they age but what is uncommon that issues arise during warranty so it's Audi's problem .they have a habbit of arising after warranty has conveniently expired..As Scotty would say endless money pits S

Great review! We took your advice and bought a Seltos Sport+ AWD late last year for my wife. Ripper of a car, very torquey little turbo engine. I’m leaning towards the Sport+ Sorento AWD diesel for myself now. Don’t really need a large SUV but the car looks like a winner. I think KIA’s next step needs to be a few performance SUVs. They’ve certainly got the engines in the Hyundai/KIA family to do it.

Agreed on those annoying bells and chimes in modern cars. I drive a 2019 Subaru Forester and its almost a delight to get back into my 2014 Hyundai i40 and it doesnt tick me off for exiting a lane without indicating. The “when it feels like it” stop start engine activates, The sensors going mad when another car gets within x of your car, the bloody radio turning on every time you start which takes a sarcastic amount of time to mute or turn down...i could keep going but as you said when you inevitably turn the lot off its that one time you really need these features will present.

I got over the Kimchi squirm some years ago when I purchased a Sportage CRDi. It has been in my growing family since the end of 2011 and any sense of trepidation about ‘made in South Korea’ disappeared within weeks of ownership. We love our Kia. However, the growing family dynamic meant that at some point we needed more room - 2 kiddies in carseats plus one a bit older meant we went searching and in spite of loving Kia - we could have gone with Soreent, we couldn’t ignore the value and slightly bigger boot space of the Skoda Kodiaq. One of its selling features was the fact that the Czechs managed to provide more room, more personality (neat little extras like umbrellas in the doors) than their German cousins on the same platform. We think both marques provide great value but overall the Kia has my wife’s heart, the Skoda has our trust.

Well, my son bought a used 2012 Sorento and was happy with it until the engine failed last year. Poor kid was distraught as he didn’t have the money to fix it, so I called Kia Cust Svc, and it turned out that the engine had a lifetime warranty, so he got a new engine for free. Best customer service I’ve ever had from a car compny, so when it’s time to trade mine in, I’m leaning toward the Sorento or the Sportage.

I swapped to the Korean's about 5 years ago from the Germans, best move I ever made. I now own 2 Genesis. I did provide Benz an opportunity last time around when I was in the market for a four wheel drive with mid level capability and was stunned when I asked if I could order the 'off road package' and if it would be warranty'd if I went off road and informally told no. Wow, just wow. Sell a car that claims to be four wheel drive capable but if you use it there is no warranty. Meanwhile my Santa Fe went everwhere (very offroad in fact, the footage is on RU-vid) and it had a diff issue 3 years in. No biggie, diagnosed on the service, replaced 2 weeks later. The Germans are slowly moving into history I'm afraid, only those who feel the need to distinguish themselves through brand choice see them as relevant anymore methinks.

Thinking about buying either GT Sorento or Palisade Highlander. Amazing Guide John. I have watched quite a lot of reviews for Sorento GT Line and I can confidently say, your is by far the best. 43 mins of sensible and usable information. I think I can easily educate the salesman on some of the feature now. Keep up the good work. I would love to see Sorent GT Line vs Palisade Highlander detailed guide (not just review) from you. Sadly I recently lost my left leg (lost the right one about three years ago) and am no longer able to drive my 2017 Sorento Platinum. I held off putting her on the market in the hope I'd be able to become mobile enough to drive again but it looks like that may no longer be possible. All I can say is whoever buys her is going to get the bargain of the century as she's had all of her scheduled services done yet only has about 2,500 km on the clock. I'm hoping to get about $40,000 for her (she was over 60k new) so we'll see. I shifted jobs in 2007 and worked selling parts for Kias since then so I have become pretty familiar with the marque and I can honestly say that if they were as crappy as some of the bogans would have you believe I wouldn't have shelled out the cash to buy two (my first Kia was a 2011 Sorento). Oh well, looks like I'm not going to get the chance to drive one of these.

You need to get the hand twist accelerator/brake package that pushes down on the brake pedal that comes up from the floor like an old stick shift, at comfort level to your dominant Hand. You are right on about the false warnings and not thinking about what people really want. I have a 2017 Sorento all good there and a 2020 KIA Proceed GT. Just starting the engine in the Proceed without you safety belt on gets you the first warning. The LKA needs to be deactivated after ever new start (not so on the Sorento) and the auto hold needs reactivating after every restart. Good video John, keep up the good work.

Great review as always! (Long time viewer, first time commenter) To be honest I had never really thought about Kia previously until I saw the New Sorento (I like this design over the previous model, I also like this interior compared to current Santa Fe ). I've seen a lot of overseas reviews on this (and have been waiting for your review as you always tell it like it is... ) It is a shame we wont get the 2.5L Turbo version here though. That would of been a winner. As I will be in the market shortly for a new 7 seater I think I'll be tossing up between this and the Skoda Kodiaq (possibly RS).. what are your thoughts? (I know its part of the company that shall remain nameless) But I'd like to hear what you think about Skoda or even see you review the Kodiaq RS

We purchased a new KIA Telluride S model which is a mid optioned model in the Dark Moss exterior and what I call an ebony and ivory interior as we have raised our family and it’s just us two again so we went for the contrast without fear of crayons, markers etc. lol. We have never owned a Kia this is our first and I must say the ride is very smooth and quiet, lots of room with true 3 row seating ( yes I’ve actually ridden back there and at 5’10” and 200ibs it was easy in-easy out and I had plenty of head and knee room. I was surprised at the positive comments I got from strangers and notably present and former Kia owners satisfied with the reliability of there Kias . While we were initially drawn to this vehicle by its looks and I must admit I am not the SUV type, a fella parked next to me one day nailed it with his comment, he said that is a Handsome vehicle and I’d have to agree. I enjoy your content and the way you poetically assault the English language lol! Thanks again !

I will never understand why people still have this misguided belief that because its from a German brand (VW, Audi, Skoda, BMW, Merc etc) its somehow superior to the Japanese and Korean options? That said, there are still industries where appearance matters to people. If some rich guy was paying thousands of dollars to a high-flying lawyer and that lawyer showed up in a Toyota Corolla or a Kia Sorrento, that rich guy might think less of them than if they showed up in a nice BMW or Merc or Audi. Same as if they showed up wearing jeans and a T-shirt instead of a fancy suit.

"Take your diesel out on the highway for an hour about once a fortnight to do a range of things." Well excuse me, for years petrol heads have whined about electric cars because of all the new and different things a driver has to do in an electric. Now if I get a diesel I have to exercise the beast one a fortnight on a highway. That includes cleaning out the DPF at high temperature so it doesn't decided to immolate itself if I park it in long grass. And you petrol heads complain about electrics being different. I call BS.
