100% agree. 18 months and 13000 miles in and I still get very excited every time I open that garage door. I’m 57, I’ve had a lot of bikes. This is my first ever KTM and it is by far the best machine I have ever owned or ridden.

Well I’m 59 and its the first KTM for me as well. I have had many bikes but honestly this one is the most enjoyable, comfortable, powerful, rideable of them all. Why I waited so long to get a bike like this I will never know. It’s amazing!
Having copied you in getting a Tracer 700 as my first big bike I’m not sure I could follow in your footsteps again and go KTM, but I love how much you love your bike - seems to really put a smile on your face!

I have rented both SAS and V4S for one day and rode them back to back in Warsaw, when i was working there. Ridden in that totally flat landscape (apart from its premium feel and incredibly beautiful design, that you pay for) Ducati was years ahead in terms of comfort, smoothnes, great acceleration, great engine brake, etc, etc. A true gentleman`s bike imo. Was so blown away with it that I almost bought the V4s with the enduro package that winter. Then, next season, i went again to Austria, for my fourth time in Landeck, at High Bikes (great rental center in W Austria) and rented them again, each for one day. Here, things took a radical turn, with the SAS obliterating the V4s in the alpine hairpins. I was hanging around with guys in race leathers, it was that much of a confidence inspiring bike. I held myself back as I was (1) on a rental bike that (2) had the original Mitas tyres on it (not a big fan of them even if they were far safer than the Pirelli Scorpion Trails on the V4s). There was no situation in which the V4s gave me the confidence of the Ktm. Exactly the opposite. Serious inertia, huge front weight, not as torquey as the SAS, not as light, not as nimble. Yes, far more elegant, confortable and with a better elements protection. A tourer for 2 people, with adv design. It accelerates faster but I will never choose light acceleration over torque (that`s why Im no Africa Twin 1100 fan either). In the Alps, the SAS was behaving like a MagLev. It is, imo, 100% a supermoto tourer. Closest to it? Maybe the 1260 V2 Multistrada. Or, the 1st gen 1290 SAS ? 😊😁
Very good run down! I thought very similar things. The ducati feels more premium and would probably be a better long distance bike but.. id rather save myself £10k and have a slightly less premium feel, but have a massive smile on my face haha!
I'm a former recent 1290 SAS MY21 owner. Full disclosure, I absolutely loved the bike itself, the thumping torque, the engine character, the handling, genuinely really loved it. However, my overall experience of being a KTM customer left a lot to be desired. First issue was a major coolant leak that took 3 separate attempts\trips, an argument with the dealer and a recovery truck for them to acknowledge it, find it and fix at just 2k miles on the bike. Half the cooling system had to be replaced. Next issue was the indicator button pinged off from the switchgear whilst I was joining an A road, they had to replace the entire switchgear cluster on the left and remove all the tank to access the wiring. Costly job for such a small problem thankfully covered under warranty. My local dealer (whose reputation wasn’t great anyway) then went bust and closed its doors for good so my new nearest local dealer was then and still is 40 miles away… -_- Final problem occurred at 4.5k miles where the clutch began to slip under full throttle at around 70mph ish. Phoned my new KTM dealer who said “That’s funny, another customer has just phoned this morning with the same problem, same bike, year and mileage…. And we had another one a few weeks ago..” What a coincidence lol..!! A clutch might be a wear & tear part, but they should not be failing after 4.5k miles of normal road use. That was the last straw for me as I had a 2000 mile tour coming up and had lost all faith in the bike to get me through that trip without ruining it. I thought I was about to be rid of this headache but selling the bike then became an issue in itself… Spoke to 2 main KTM dealers and they wouldn’t even give me a price for the bike, just said “not interested in used stock.” Bear in mind this is in April, a time when most dealers want to stock up for the summer buying rush… The one KTM dealer gave some me friendly advice and said, “try speaking to Jordan Bikes Leeds, they are currently on a buying spree to stock up for summer and should give you a good price.” Phew, I thought... Phoned them, spoke to the sales manager, he said “it’s true, we are interested in used bikes… BUT NOT KTM’s…” (holy s**t ?!?! Was my next thought..) When I asked why, his reply was “we don’t know what is happening with KTM’s parts manufacturing at the moment, but they are just having too many issues” So even with 6 months warranty left on my bike, 3 dealers wouldn’t even give me a price on it in the run up to summer… I was genuinely blown away. Luckily BMW gave me a ‘reasonable price’ in part-ex against a nearly new well known adventure bike so managed to wash my hands of it, ready for my trip. Issues with bike’s and cars happen, it’s just part of life and owning them but it’s how those issues are handled which makes the difference. When buying brand new, and at a premium for a European brand, that sort of experience just isn’t good enough. Cannot see myself ever owning another KTM road bike anytime soon with their current dealer setup coupled with their reputation for electrical\mechanical faults and thus poor residuals, which is a real shame because the bikes they make are awesome in their design and character and I would love to have owned more in the future. Not intended to be a moan, just sharing an honest timeline of my experience as an owner.
Hey! Thanks for the breakdown and sorry to hear you've had such a crap time of KTM dealers. I've never known a dealer down this way to not even give a price on a used bike. Even at the end of summer when they are wanting to get rid of stock, they are still at least giving a price. The KTM dealer network is so hit and miss for their quality and some just don't seem to care at all. I do hope that there are bigger brands that buy dealers as a network similar to how BMW, Triumph, HD etc do it. Did they do anything about the clutch out of interest? I agree that it shouldn't be happening but I do see both sides of the story, but having said that, I don't think that nothing should be done. An effort to meet somewhere in the middle if KTM UK won't honour the warranty on it. Glad to hear most of your issues were replaced under warranty even if it took some fight!
@@SamVBikes The dealer was prepared to do the clutch under warranty on the basis that multiple customers have come in, all with very early clutch failures (circa 5k miles) which makes a solid case that points to a poor quality\faulty part. That's the other thing I noticed about KTM dealers Vs KTM head office, whenever I had these problems the dealers would always say things along the lines of "I'll see what KTM says" as if they had to do battle with KTM in a court room with barristers and make a highly compelling case for a warranty claim to the jury lol. Never seen this type of charade from any other bike or car dealer before, even jap bike dealers. I'm sat there thinking "see what they say?!?" the bike is pissing coolant down the side of the engine, don't worry about 'what they say', it's clearly a defect, please fix it and send them the bill lol. A good manufacturer in such a niche industry should bend over backwards to look after and keep their customers, not penny pinch over warranty claims on 1 or 2 year old bikes with their dealers. I really did it find it comical at times... Anyhow, I wish the experience was different and I wish could either have kept my bike or even brought myself to buy another new KTM but the whole thing left me feeling totally disillusioned with them as brand and pushed my tolerance too far considering how much money I spent. Your dealers down south must be a better bunch especially with you managing 30k miles. I'd have hyper tension and no hair after 30k miles if things carried on the way they were going... 😂
Harper - I’m experiencing the same with my clutch at 6k miles 2021 model. KTM do not want to know. Very disappointed. Their attitude is appalling. Not the first time I’ve heard of their shite customer service
I have had KTM Adventures from there first carb 950 Adventure I have had every Generation to the current model None of them have let me down A few trips around Morocco no like no issues 👏👏👏
After 45000 miles on two super duke GT's in 4 years. I have absolutely loved them. totally reliable. With the state of the UK roads, this is my next bike.
Just say no to shaft drive. Chains and sprockets last 20k miles or more and cost $200 to replace (and is usually an easy DIY). Shaft drives are heavy, still require maintenance, and when they fail (they do fail) they cost thousands.
Shaft drives are very Easy to mantain and chainging the oil Is super Easy and cheap. And there's no need to lubricate the Chaín every 500 kms, so you save a Lot of money in Chain lubricants too. With the correct mantainance and proactive services Shaft drives are very reliable and long lasting options.
Just finished watching this right through in one hit. Excellent review thanks for putting this out. I pretty much agree with everything you've said about the bike and ownership of the bike. I've had a couple of niggles you didn't mention on my bike but they've been sorted out under warranty without issue. The right dealer can make the difference between a good and bad ownership experience, fortunately I use a really good KTM dealer. The main problem I have, is getting enough time to ride the bike but when I do it puts a smile on my face every time.

I am an ex KTM Service Manager. I would never own one as I had to deal with the irate customers who had broken down or had warranty issues. KTM need to up their game to compete with the Japanese and BMW, regardless of what you say 😮😮It seems you’ve been lucky!
I don't disagree that KTM UK need to up their game when it comes to customer service and warranty issues. The thing that bugs me is there still is a mentality that the reason something has gone wrong is because it's a KTM. Case in point being the huge numbers of BMW 1300GS starter motors getting wet and catching fire whilst the bike is parked... all the BMW customers are pretty quiet about it and it's being labelled as teething issues on a new model.. if that was a KTM, owners would be livid, screaming how sh*t the entire brand was from the rooftops. Side note - the way a few of my followers with Hondas have been treated, I don't think it's all sunshine and roses everywhere else. We are all buying heavily technologically advanced bikes with a lot of electronics... things will go wrong. My dealer have been brilliant and are brilliant. If you have a dealer who don't want to help, that's the issue which seems less common with BMW granted. Over 40k miles now and still no issues 👍🏼
My KTM was a nightmare. Water hit the elecotronics on the handlebars. Light goes on and off, blinkers going on and off as they like, very dangerous. My bosch luggage system has faild. My Serivce garage tried to scam my insurance and me, by ordering a new case and installing my old lock on it. Now i can take out the keys without closeing it, and that should not be possible. My quick shifter jumps to neutral if i try to go from firhst to second gear on 7000 RPM+. They say its normal, so what is it for, for cruse relax mode? My bike turned the electronics on and of due to water... And dont talk about the KTM App, wtf is going on... The navigation system whants you to uturn on highways. Sends you on the wrong way on a highway. And there is no way to contact KTM without your officel service garage to get real help. Dont even try to ask your garage for something they will never call you back for any solutions.
And there was more, after a crash my tank fits not exactly in the center, they gave it back to me and said they cant fix it, even after ive said, but as i bought it, it was centered??? And i am not trying to exaggerate it, i dont mention the broken seat lock and the o ring that leaked oil, becaus for me this are minor problems and i dont care. Ah yes, and the keys are garbage. The plastic case always opens itself over time. And the next edit lol... I forgot that this system that should open the handles for the cases is not working at all after a short period of time. And my new case on the right side is deforming and looking like its about to falling apart, i would show fotos of everything but i cant link shit on youtube. To be fair I got the 2020 version of it, and this version was never well centered my bike is leaning to the right side, and not by less. Oh yeah, the standard exhaust is totally rusty lol. WTF Is going on, this bike costs 25k.
France resident and 7K km on the clock. Agree, concur and YES! The screen is too low, but like you I have added a deflector. Don't use the rally mode much - can't see the need; love the pre-load for handling (jack up to 78/80% for front-end feel); dash / GUI is awesome, but the dip / shortcut button are easy to hit with big gloves. Standard (Mitas) tryes are not the best - Conti Roadattack are awesome. Chain slap relates to noise - had a load of bikes with chains (and shaft) and the 1290 chain slap is not really an issue I feel. After owning loads of bikes (last 3 were 1200 Tigers) and with IAM advanced qual, lots of riding and blood running, this is the most complete bike that I have owned. It is a very competent, engaging and exciting bike, which I am very much enjoying! Great advice on the side stand and your other niggles - my fuel cap did not open a few times but I think that was me. Thank you Sam, you are a rockstar.
Thank you! I agree! The Rally Mode for me essentially lets me to set up the bike in the way I want and leave it like that! I had the 1190 for 6 years, I only had to replace the battery, I have the 2021 1290 Adventure S from new, no problems, just back from France 1200 miles two up with luggage, fantastic bike and always get people coming up to talk about the bike… great video btw keep it up
I got a 2018 12980 SAS really love the bike I have had it for 30.00 km started at 28.000 km on the bike now 50k+. Went to Italy Rome with it from The Netherlands had no issues what so ever. Went for a trip to Germany quite a while later and blew the engine on the front cylinder out of no where on the highway while getting on the highway: Cost 3.500 euro, on of the valve holder broke of and went into the cylinder... Repaired the bike went on another trip worked fine again even beter. Sadly a few months later the back spring started leaking. Even though I love KTM and the raw power this kind of quality makes me want to switch brands..
Really nice review Sam! I have a 2019 SAS and I was “warned” about the “issues” I would face. So far nothing apart from battery and that was on me because I was a knob and left it rust throughout last winter because of reasons. Runs like brand new and I am keeping it for the long run.

I have had some weird battery issues with my 2022 1290 SAS but I swapped it out almost a year ago for a Lithium battery. No issues and no problems even when I don't ride it for a few weeks.
I've literally just replaced my battery too as I started getting slow starts and the odd preload warning. Didn't go lithium as I saw about 50/50 on if they were better in the cold UK weather! Glad yours is sorted!
I have a 2019 SAS second hand, 30000 miles a year ago when I bought it. I had it full serviced with everything checked which cost £1500. London dealership lol. The suspension light then came on permanently. KTM had updated their central computer and the mechanic Fabio at KTM Vauxhall got them to give me a new suspension electric box and fitted it for free. Excellent. This winter the start button went wonky. Brilliant RU-vid videos available but in fact it worked again with a bit of WD40 sprayed into the button. Otherwise totally brilliant. I am 70 years old and this is by far the best bike I have ever owned in 45 years of riding.
Haha that London dealership fun! Great to hear that you're loving it. Amazing that they replaced the suspension box! The KTM's seem to be getting better and better with each generation on the reliability front so hopefully it continues! I've still got this and adore the thing!
I have a 19 1290 Adventure s , 26000 trouble free miles. Just basic maintenance and 18000 mile major service. On second chain and sprockets . Lots of tires and oil changes. Had a 15 KTM 1190 r and put 44000 trouble free , traded it in for the 19 S . Just replaced my first battery, 6-13-23
40.000 kms on my 2021 SAS, I find my KTM a relatively reliable daily commuter for weaving through Antwerp traffic and highway driving. Have had some issues though, each time after a maintenance overhaul: software flash failed (took 2 weeks to fix), fuel injection tube came off while overtaking a truck, and just recently the preload adjuster pump failed electronically. Mind you I’m riding this beast in any weather all year round. Can’t complain with that.
@@SamVBikes All were fixed under warranty but took time. Now my warranty’s expired, I’m in the same dilemma as you whether to sell it now, as long as it still holds any value, or keep it forever. Been testing the Multistrada V4S Rally lately, a refined gentleman compared to the raw beast that is the SAS.
Nice! Yeah it's definitely an difficult one to decide. A lot of people have had parts replaced even out of warranty which is positive. I do like the look of the Ducati but I can't bring myself to spend the stupid price tag!!
@@SamVBikes V4Rally sure has a steep price tag. However if you ride it, it oddly starts making sense. Comes with default 4y warranty and resale value should be better than a KTM. Also, fuel consumption seems to have improved, I found it not to be higher then my SAS'es in real world situations (6 l/100km). As I rely on my motorbike as primary means of transport, the extra money starts to make sense.
I'll have to get my leg over one! I do think they are great middle ground between a GS and SAS. The one I spec'd up even without luggage was over £30k which seems crazy, but then I guess most of the market seems to be slowly going that way!
Used to have an 1190S. Loved it, but drank the kook-aid and bought a 2018 1200 GSA. Again, I love the bike, but I just miss my KTM. The power is so animalistic compared to my Beamer. So I'm picking up my new 2022 1290 R this weekend and the Beamer is for sale.
Haha that power is addictive isn't it? Even though the GS isn't much slower, there's something about how the KTM delivers the power! Congrats on the new bike!!

I knew exactly what I was buying, and your review just confirmed I did not the right, but the ONLY choice for me 😊! So far, the bike has meet all my expectations and even surprised me on some 😊! 1 month old, and already with 4.000 kms😂! You did forget one of the cons people complain about: the turn indicator switch odd feeling 😂. However, I am happy to say that the issue has been resolved for 2023 models! The turn switch now has a normal proper feeling 😊! Enjoy life 😊!

I have enjoyed your videos since you got he SAS. And that has increased my interest. Finally gave in and sold my 1250GS last week and picked up a new ( 2022) 12090SAS yesterday. So many differences. Some good, some less good. But i have only done the 300 km. back form the dealer and i know this the beginning of a fun adventure. Busted my eye this morning and had to spend all day on bloody surgery ( double bugger when you are busy and self employed ). But it should be good when the weekend arrives and i can´t wait to get back on it. Thanks for your effort. Looking forward to the next ones.
Ahh congratulations on the new bike! The GS is definitely better in some areas, I'll give it that. But for an all round bike that also has the hooligan factor, I can't think of anything I'd rather have! Sorry to hear about the eye! Hope you're not out of action too long!
After 17 years on a (much modded) Beemer 1100R, I've now owned my 2013 KTM 1190 for 18 months and it's fabulous - stone reliable, and total fun. The bike will do 50 mpg when you're touring with full luggage and pillion. Last year from Yorkshire to Tuscany, this year we're off to the Pyrenees. 👍
If it's not too late, from one who's spent nearly 30 years hammering between the UK and Spain, here's a healthy tip. France is bloody big and bloody expensive. Unless you're going to back-road it and camp through the French countryside, take the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao, and hit the Pyrenees from there. If you want to get more miles in, then do your riding in Spain. From either side of the Pyrenees you've got amazing roads - down to Teruel and Albarracín, or the other side to the Picos de Europa and Galicia. Enjoy your trip and let us know how it goes.

I'll be 67 this year and made my first Euro trip in 1978 on my faithful Triumph TR6R - to 'massive' France. 🙂 We're travelling from Yorks to Plymouth via mid-Wales and sailing to Santander, as we've done before on previous Spain/Portugal trips. We generally travel without hammering huge distances in one 'sitting', but sometimes, thanks to iffy distance estimates over minor routes, that plan can go awry, as I'm sure you know. 😗 After zigzagging through the Pyrenees, we'll visit an old French pal in Toulouse and then wind our way north-ish via the (beautiful) Lot, Limoges, Poitiers and maybe dip into Brittany - we'll see.
I have a 2018 25000 mile SAS which I’ve tailored to suit me over the years. Bar end mirrors, handlebar risers, Givi screen and an Air Hawk seat pad. I’ve been looking for my next bike for a few months and come away from test rides realising that the bike I really want is the one I already own. The bike has been faulty free, but I stretched the chain at 18,000 miles after which the low speed chatter was unpleasant, and the battery comments in this video are bang on. I stupidly fitted a smaller battery which resulted in starting issues and electronics warnings. If the bike does a lot of short journeys a trickle charger is essential, but then it’s a big V twin that takes a fair bit of cranking. My problem is that I’d like a lighter bike with a bit more off-road usability but which does highways well too. The KTM does the rough stuff, but it’s a big old beast and hard work in some situations. I guess it will have to be be two bikes rather than a change.
I only have 9000 miles on my '22 SAS, but I've already completed two trips from the Arkansas Ozarks to the Colorado Rockies. Completed the San Juan Skyway a few weeks ago. On the way back I rode through 200 miles of drenching rain across Oklahoma. So far I have had zero issues. Love it.
Superb long term review. I bought my ‘23 model last July and have done 2000 miles (I’m fortunate to have another bike too), I’m going to Switzerland with my wife as pillion later this year and your video has filled me with confidence for the trip. I have a set of Bumot panniers 40/36 litres and a 65 litre top box. I traded in a 20 plate Multistrada 950s that developed a fault with the instrument cluster and my GS before that needed a new central control unit.

Hi Sam, My 1290 SAS has now 17‘000km and it’s a lot of fun. The negative details you mentioned I have seen these, too, but after getting used to it, who really cares? The important things are the outstanding engine, the excellent suspension, the very comfortable ACC, etc. I only once had an issue and it was my fault: very first ride out in spring, the battery was super weak, and unfortunately I switched the engine off shortly after leaving home. But I had a charger in the top case, and after 40‘ charging at a local shop, it started again, and later that day I fully charged the battery for a few hours No issues at all sice then! Very reliable bike in my view. I can’t speak for others, but some of my BMW friends (we are crossing the Alps, doing long tours together) seem to have more technical issues than I. All the best 😀
Hey! You're 1000% correct! Enjoy the bike and don't worry about it! Seems like some people forget that though! A weak battery is the killer of a lot of these new bikes so not surprised that was an issue. I've stopped using chargers and that helped but when you need to charge it, a good charger goes a long way! Ride safe and thanks for watching!

Thank you for watching David! There are lots of reports of people running over 150-200k kms. Look after it and maintain it and I don't see any reason why not!

Great video man, you covered everything in thorough detail. It’s helping anyone considering one of these or one of the competitors. I own a Street Triple RS and I completely agree with the issues and servicing cost your friend who owns a Tiger 1200. At the end of the day all of the bikes are machines, there’s no guarantee that every single product off the assembly line is going to work without any faults. All of these bikes have become so good in their own way, really it just comes down to what makes you most happy. Thanks to your video, I’m considering getting 1290SAS as it offers hooliganism/touring/city suitability.

Just watched your video and was happy with what I heard. I bought a new 2021 1290 SAS and a 2021 890R. Unfortunately I had the 1290 replaced after 600kms due an electrical gremlin. KTM and the dealer were excellent to deal with regarding this and it took about 3 weeks. Since then both bikes have been awesome and reliable.
So glad to hear you've had a decent dealer experience. That's really the big thing! All of these new bikes are prone to electrical issues so when the dealer looks after you, you're safe! Safe riding!
Great video Sam, I am on a 2018 1260 multistrada and find my knees are bent up when on longer trips but only getting 250KMs means i do get a stretch every 2-3 hours. I follow you and Tim Rodie as you ride this machine. We dont see too many 1290 adventure S here in New Zealand as the R and the GS is dominant. I am 6 foot 3 and think this will probably be my next bike for the hip/knee / handlebar triangle. Keep up the great videos, I really enjoy the tours and tech tips!!

I really agree with you on the initial installation of all of the options, I'm sure it helps to actually bring the price down overall a little bit by making them all the same. Funny thing about mine a 2023 none of the extras were turned on when I received mine with 0 mi. Good thing I did not try to quick shift😂
Haha yeah it definitely saved me a chunk of money! I've heard a few things like that before. My dealer just enabled everything for me after I had my first service 😂
I find it absolutely amusing how KTM owner/complainers are. I grew up on Harley’s my whole life, owned, built from the frame up, and ridden Harley’s across entire continents over the past 20 years, and as much as I love my Heritage, my 2017 KTM SAS is by far the most fun I’ve ever had on a motorcycle in my life. I’ve owned and ridden many bikes-Guzzi, Honda, Ducati, BMW, Triumph, etc.-and they ALL have problems and encounter issues. Hell, the MoCo (Harley) is world famous for their horrible past under previous ownership of producing a garbage product and screwing over owners! And don’t get me started on their pricing… But that doesn’t stop the masses from loving and buying the bikes. You love it for what it is, and ride it for what it was designed for. I’ve had many issues over the years with my home built, Dyna, and Heritage, and have YET (knocks on wood) to have an issue with my KTM. But even if an issue cropped up, as you said, “it happens”. Nothing is perfect, so ride it like it was intended, and enjoy it. I will say, I much prefer the 2017 style over the newer 2021 and up style, and I live the buttons on my 2017 far better than the newer models too. 😂
Haha it's hilarious isn't it?! I don't understand the lack of thought process. You're buying a man-made machine which has been designed by a team of people.. there is ALWAYS going to be some design flaws, manufacturing imperfections, and oversights. Those seem to be less of an issue with most brands until you get to KTM!

On the Harley side, there was a time that if your HD wasn’t leaking, it was empty. 😂 My ‘06 HD TC88 has over 60k mi, has ridden across Europe, across the states, across Canada, and is here in Japan, and is still a champ. Has it had its issues? YES! Sometimes expensive ones. But I do 99% of all maintenance myself, so to complain would be a bit hypocritical. Same can be said for my ‘09 TC96. That aside… Everyone I know who rides an HD has had problems at some point, and the thing is, they “expect” it. If your HD hasn’t ever had an issue, you’re either lucky or lying. And do you see anyone complaining in the same fashion as KTM owners do?! NOPE!!! Instead, we HD owners have entire communities built on literally step-by-step helping other owners solve and fix those issues themselves. Now that I’m a KTM owner, I can confidently say I LOVE my 1290 SAS! And have already started learning the systems to prepare for the eventuality of any commonly known issues. So when I went looking for a similar supportive community, what do I find? Idiots complaining about the product they made a willing decision to buy. Seriously, exactly how unGodly privileged are these people? How arrogant can they be to honestly believe they should never experience any issues with a vehicle, let alone one made with such a purpose as to destroy off-road or on-road miles with 160hp?! I’d say, just my only opinion here… There’s only a few negatives I don’t like, but the benefits far outweigh them, so why complain? And yeah… The idea of a ridiculously over-powered ADV bike can only be the product of a genius or an idiot. And the people who are attracted to this are either feral or a special breed of adventurous, but moronic nonetheless. 😆
Haha I read through that comment just nodding my head and thinking "exactly"! The biggest thing for me is when people complain about the fit/finish of the bike... that doesn't change when you buy one so you know exactly what you are getting when you hand over your bank card! I do wonder what's going to happen in the coming months/years with all of these stupid power bikes on the horizon. BMW M1000XR, the whispers of the 210bhp 1390 KTM SuperDuke which the engine will end up in the Super Adv at some point. Ducati will follow with their 205bhp V4!

It’s already hard enough to justify off-roading with 160hp, and even that puckers me up a bit, and I’ve spent a career for 23 years doing crazy stuff… Im not sure at this point in my life I could find it in me to desire anything more. And you know KTM… They’ll take the exact same engine and throw it in the ADV frame and say “go wild!” 😂😅 Im only 16k km into my 2017 1290 now… Im sure I’ll keep it till it falls apart and then make up my mind by then. Hopefully with good maintenance that won’t be till well-beyond 100k and then some. 😂
Oh it definitely needs a re-calibration of your throttle hand to make sure you don't over do it! Surprisingly I don't find the SA too much off road, even in full power Rally Mode! It's an insane amount of power, but its a lot of fun! I'd love to think it will last! I'm keep to keep this now as it's just so much fun even a few years in
Hi Sam, Just watched this and totally agree with everything you covered. Had mine 15 months and 10K miles, I had a coolant leak from new which turned out to be the water pump housing but was covered under warranty without issue. Balance of the chassis for two up u-turns is incredible, the power for one up off the throttle fun and games is all of the awesome, I love it. I'm off to France, Germany, Austria, Dolomites and back over the French Alps in August and cannot wait. My only two niggles (neither of which are deal breakers) is that with a 34" inside leg I do find it a bit cramped, even with the taller Ergo seat and plating on the fasteners is cheaper than cheap. She's a keeper!
Thank you bud! Yeah its a cracking bit of kit isn't it. I'm surprised that I still love it this far in. The Tracer had me contemplating other bikes a year in, but I just have no real desire to have anything else in that sector on the market. Maybe a Tuono V4 but that's an addition to the garage haha! @@SamVBikes that's what my Interceptor is for but, crazily, insurance is proving awkward. It seems to be that because my other 2 bikes are old and the interceptor is newer, it's good reason to charge an extra £200+ which is crazy!
Hi Sam, Thanks a lot for an excellent video. After a five months wait, I got my 2023 grey SAS in April. Weather has been terrible so far here in Istanbul and I could only put 2500 km so far. I had the side stand nuts coming loose as well :) Loctite solved it. Other than that, no issues as of yet. But one thing is sure, it puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Definitely the hooligan of the big adventure lot. Can't wait to go on a couple of trips with my better half. Also, definitely planning a track day at Istanbul Park in late September. Very nice review, thank you. Many reviewers aren't very technical because they're just your average rider that aren't mechanically educated. Like you said, I wish there was a shaft drive version. Maybe something primarily suited for road use and secondary off road, with a much lower seat height. I'm mostly a street rider who wants to occasionally get on the unpaved roads. The KTM power for the price is what I find attractive.
Thank you! That seems like a big market which a lot of brands are only just starting to cover. So a shaft drive for on road, and chain for the off road version would work well I'd say! It's definitely a huge amount of bike for the money, especially if you get it on a deal!

My 2020 1290 just got stolen, so thinking about a small upgrade to a 2021/2022. Do you have experience with the previous model? Don't really agree with your comments on parts being the same for multiple brands and models. Installation can make a lot of difference. Temperature, vibrations, but also the stability of the electronics can have huge impact on reliability.
Sorry to hear that! I'd ridden the previous model a few times but never pulled the trigger as I felt something was missing. Could never put my finger on it! Totally agree with the install and location makes a difference. I'd say if a Multi V4 has the same IMU for example, they produce similar temps, GS engines can be equally as vibey, as can something like an XR. The components are built to be capable of withstanding every option on the market
Great Video Sam, I’m just back from Spain riding over 2500kms through the Pico’s and both sides of the Pyrenees and the SAS didn’t miss a beat and was sublime hitting tight bents and gunning it to the next bend. I can only say I am glad I changed the shit Mitas tyres KTM insist using on new bikes for the Michelin Road 6 tyres which are awesome on the SAS in all conditions and road surfaces. There seems to be a general group of constant whiners about KTM. I have had my 2019 1290 Super Adventure R now for almost 4 years. Done 34500km with it and only had one problem with it. My water pump shaft seal went. And that was it. I am now thinking of getting a 2023 model, which is why I am watching this video. And yes, the chain slap and shaking with low refs in high gears are my only pet peeve with this bike. My wife has the Tiger 900 Rally Pro, which is why it is that much more noticeable to me.

I have a 2018 SA/R. The LED headlight is crap; the color, throw, and quality of light are weak. My original headlight went out at 7k miles (headlight failure warning). An Ebay replacement from a wrecked bike cost $400, but a new one from KTM is $1k! Old fashioned halogen bulbs are much better and cheaper. I also had to replace a front brake switch for $85. The air filter also needs to be upgraded, but I think that was fixed on the newer models. There is also some instability over 85 mph. Thicker oil in the steering damper helps. The chain slider was totally worn out at 14k miles and I replaced it for $30. I fixed the key out of range issue by wearing the key around my neck on a lanyard. Those issues aside, the bike has been great and has never stranded me.
Those first few iterations of LED lights were rubbish across the board. A family friend of ours had a Mercedes E-Class with the upgraded premium LED lights around... the worst lights I've ever come across in my life! Barely looked like they were turned on! The newer ones seem way better though! I'd assume that was because it was the first time they had properly integrated them! Glad the bike has been great other than those issues!
Hi Sam, great video and love your channel! I have owned 3 BMW GS' over the last 10 years, never had any issues. Your channel (and some other) eventually convinced me and end march this year I bought a 2021 1290 SAS like yours and have loved every second of it! Washed the bike on Saturday and now it won't even switch the screen on!! with ABR festival right around the corner I now have a very expensive bike in my garage that doesn't work. If only they were reliable! Starting to quickly fall out of love with this thing!!
Hey! Thank you! Have you spoken to KTM about it? They will normally arrange to collect the bike if it's not ride-able. Check your key battery, make sure you have pressed the button on the key (in case you have the key-safe mode on), and if not, get the spare and hold it up to the backup key area on the bike to see if that's the issue. Hopefully its just that - I assume you didnt get too happy with the jetwasher! A mate of mine has a GSA and had a huge amount of ESA problems and all sorts since washing it literally over the last few weeks!
Nice review, love the tip about the pads, but as awesome as this bike is if you want one..... Be patient and wait for the KTM crazy sale they do every few years.... Brand new 2020 sas for me was 3500 pounds off and was the same price as the 890 i costed up
Hi there, congrats for your 30k of pleasure ! I’ve just bought a brand new 2022 SAS. So far i love that bike, really love every part of it (maybe not the blinker switch) I just had the service on it and the dealer told me that the bike is even better with an 16 (17 oem)tooth pinion and I can really confirm that. Only issues I had so far was the shifter (was a bit harsh) but this is solved now and sometimes the bike doesn’t link to the key… (just need to turn the kill switch and then turn back off)

No problems so far, so I started to focus more on the enjoying side of my KTM not the negative online comments. And when I do read some, I just remember having fun on the bike and not behind a keyboard 👍😁

Hi, Sam. Great video, thanks for your honest experience. I own a 2022 KTM 1290 SAR and, previously, I had a 2010 KTM 990 Adv. No mayor issues so far and a lot of good trips and moments in my 13 years of ownership of KTMs. I like the philosophy of the brand and the power and the versatility of the bikes, great on the road and offroad. If you listen to the people, there are always complains of all bikes and brands, I normally check them more for any trip to take into account rather than listening the complains. At the end, if you a have a bike of this level of performance and versatility, you must take care of it, if don’t then, get ready for the issues… Greetings from Spain, and ride safe.

Just getting to the end of the running in period on my 890 Adventure. Absolutely love it. It does less than 5 litres per 100 Km, and I can chuck it through the bends like a complete animal. To be brutally honest, I'm not sure the extra power of the 1290 is worth the expense in worn tyres, fuel consumption and so on. At the ripe old age of 52 I reckon I could hang on to the 890 until I'm too old to ride, may that be many years hence!
Congrats on the new bike! Yeah I agree, the 890 is such an incredibly capable bike that it does make you think if you need the extra grunt. I do like having the extra on the 1290 like radar cruise but it's definitely not a necessity!
Just stepped down from 2021 1290 SAS to the husqvarna norden expedition which has same engine as your new bike. Went to Scotland just after running in service for a week and I certainly didn't see a massive difference in bottom end acceleration and like you said it sips the fuel. All I all glad I moved it on. 👍
I have the older version 2020 model, it had a rear shock failure 2 mths out of warranty at 9K miles, fortunately, the KTM picked up the entire cost, as soon as I could prove that the services had been done by a franchised dealer. I have just done almost 2000miles in Germany 2-up with full luggage, the bike never missed a beat, I love it 😄
Thank you for what I can only describe as an amazing video. Truly informative. Saturday just gone, I was knocked off my bright red GSA (yeah.... SMIDSY.... Go figure). It's likely to be written off, and I have a soft spot for these with concern that the bike is my only mode of transport currently. So it's needs to work. Thank you.
Mine is a 2021 too. I really only have two gripes. First is the vibration. I've ridden Japanese fours for over forty years and going to a twin just isn't as comfortable to me. The second gripe is that the high beam switch is too easy to bump and turn on when wearing thicker gloves. Beyond that yes there are some glitches like the tendency for the bars to want to osculate around 70 kph and the suspension electronics glitch but I can live with them. I get a tiny bit of weepage around one of the fork seals too. I put a 40t rear sprocket on mine. It lets the motor run a little easier on the motorway. I currently have Anakee Adventures on but they tend to spin under power which turns the traction control on. After seeing what you paid I'll probably just turn my own wrenches for the valve adjustment.
I could definitely understand why it feels vibey coming from those years of riding inline-4's for so long! High beam switch can be annoying too! Glad you're happy with it overall - I've been tempted with changing up the gearing but the remap I had done really helped with the motorway vibes etc too
Put on some $20 Grip Puppies and you'll see a lot of difference. This coming from a GTR1400 & EXC500 (where the grip puppies are currently installed) rider.

Love mine. Wiring in power to the Garmin was unnecessarily difficult. Even had to remove the crash bars. Dealership in Abbingdon are brilliant so shout out to them. Everything else is as you said. Great review 👏.
Great video, thanks for the upload. I used to own a 990 SM for a couple of years - by far the most reliable bike I have ever had but I looked after it meticulously too. I ride the GS now and it has been pretty solid as well so I think a lot depends on the owner.

@@SamVBikes Newish I think, I specified it on mine tail end of 22. I reckon it is BMW trying to reign in excessive charging by (some) dealers. Yes, good to know the individual costs too as that is the way most people are buying them at the moment. My 20K miles valve service on my Tiger 1200 was ~£1260, that was painful! That is why I dug deep into the service offerings from BMW.

Ive left most of the FB groups due to the moaning and worst of all the billy big balls out there which is a real shame I’ve had mine for nearly 2 years only 17k but the bike is the best bike I’ve had and I’ve had a few 😂. Sam I have a 2013 1190S originally part of the world wide dealer launch. My local dealer Barry Wellings of Valley Motosport in Kelowna BC Canada rode it in Austria. I have now 130,000 kms have done the maintenance also had the oil temp sensor as it was giving reading errors. I ride likely 60 40 road dirt latley leaning much more to offroad logging roads and some interesting 2 track also alot of that is 2 up and not slow. Great bike reliable fast and absolutley a blast to ride everytime you start it up. 9nly problem I have ever had is old weather starting does not like it. Enjoy it ride it hard smkle your ass off....
For this video you'll get a brand new 1290 off KTM FREE 😊, I'll stick with my Kawasaki SX 6 years old the only thing I've had to replace was front discs and pads , average service £160 annual 26,000 mile service shims and a service approximate £500
The XR1000 is a totally different bike than the GS and SAS or SAR. It needs to be ridden at very high rpms otherwise nothing exciting happens. It lacks the torque down low. It's more of a track day machine than anything else and thus, not practical at all.
omg, the part about the KTM owners is SPOT ON!!! i've had a couple of issues on my 2016 1290...i dont give a damn. its something that can happen to any bike. thank you for your long term review, its actually very useful for me, since i am planning on getting one of these amazing 2023 white 1290, to replace my old white 1290 lol what can i say, i am a fan of white KTM's lol!!!
I’m from the states and have often wondered about the 13:15 complaining about KTMs in the UK. Why there. Why not here? I think the US is steeped in off road racing with lots of room to do it. I was a racer for many years myself, and if you showed up on a Kawasaki on race day, you were like a cucumber in the pumpkin patch. It’s a sea of orange. With that said, racers are wrenchers. We need to have machines ready to race each weekend. We’re used to tinkering, and understand that with new tech, it will take several years to get the bugs ironed out. Because so many US woods and dirt racers transitioned into KTM advs and street bikes, maybe they were better prepared to tackle the challenges with a hands on approach. I think with the limited greenways available in the UK, the folks picking up KTMs may have more road experience, whereas they aren’t as accustomed to beating on a bike, breaking it, and fixing it themselves. In the US, KTM is a staple of performance, power, and longevity, with an outstanding national reputation. This is just my opinion/guess. Not used to seeing KTM slammed. Sam, nice job bringing it to light.

Yeah definitely! Plus the benefit of two bikes is completely different riding experience, spliiting mileage, plus if one is being serviced or having work done, the other is still in the garage!
I just downsized to a 690 enduro r. Put 32000 on my SAS, i will miss the speed, but it was too big for offroad shenanigans, with my skillset anyway. Only issue i had was the Front brake switch came on periodically. This resolved after a new switch and a reset.
I dont blame you with a lot of off road! She is a big thing to haul around in the mud. Still a lot of fun though! Love a 690R! Been thinking of something similar for the byways and trails!
@SamVBikes If you do pick up a 690, get a new seat straight up. Picked mine up yesterday, like sitting on a knife blade. Ordering a seat concepts asap.
Nice and complete 30.000 video review of your KTM. And obviously you recommend the machine. I had a SDGT and it was fun and lively a real fulfilling ride…till it wasn’t. But I had dealership poor support issues, it was my first bike with them and I felt they wouldn’t care enough for my claims. So I sold it. But at least I had one KTM and besides what I mentioned, the bike itself was very good in deed. You mentioned that the GS is heavy and lacks power…can’t agree to that. The engine 1250cc has loads of torque, so, the bike feels light and responsive. For me, it’s an incredible well balanced machine. Top end speed wise, if it were a requirement KTM has the SDGT and BMW has the S1000RR or the XR. Having all things at the same time on one bike off-road capabilities included, seems a little too much to aspire. And the best should be having two bikes, of course ( or more…If I could I would have several, because every brand have their strong points and very interesting products as a whole that a bike is). I don’t trash the name of the brand, never did, and never will. I don’t see the value in that. What’s important is that each one finds the machine that satisfies their needs and Brands preferences aside, there are a lot of options on the Market to accomplish that goal. People sometimes want impossible things and naturally they’re never satisfied. But that has nothing to do with bikes. Thanks for sharing the experience but I already knew that KTM bikes are worth it, for sure. The myths, are a human thing, a natural tendency that people love to feed on, and knowing that everything is somehow imperfect, you are able to choose by your own and by personal experience, avoiding a lot of misleading presumptions, what you really believe is the best for you.
