Mitsubishi has restyled and updated the 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. It's now longer and ditches the split tailgate design of the previous version. There's an edgy design up front, along with a new infotainment system. Paul Maric tests out the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross to see if it's worth spending your hard earned cash on.

We just bought one...absolutely amazing car! Got all of the features you'd ever want/need, seats and comfort are excellent, and a 10yr warranty with 10yrs fixed price servicing is a no brainer...nothing comes near it regarding value for money.

Picked up my 2021 Eclipse Cross Aspire on Tuesday after trading in my 2011 ASX Aspire. (BTW after nearly 10 years my ASX was still running like a dream), Main observations. Engine and steering are fantastic. Plenty of power and very responsive. Seats are comfortable but I am 190cms tall and mid console can be a little restrictive compared to the ASX which was much lower. Getting used to it though. Much more rear room compared to ASX though. Safety tech is great. Infotainment system is OK. If you change audio mode it kicks you out of Google maps and its two or three steps get back. I agree the tray for the phone is quite small. As for styling, I love both interior and exterior styling. The orange of the halogen headlights looks a bit dull though compared to the LED running and fog lights. The fact it uses 91 petrol as opposed to premium which many of its competitors need, has a 10 year warranty and fixed price servicing (with my dealer coming to me to service it) are all bonuses. I looked at all the competitors before I chose this one. All in all though I think this hits the sweet spot for me. Great car and for the price better than the competitors looking at it cumulatively

@@jaywilliams3625 yeah u would buy if the choice was between the 2... but if your shopping for suv u wouldn't... almost everyone who had an issue with older model just didn't like Mitsubishi's period. There's same or worst issue with another brand yet reviewers skip over. Yet makes stupid arguments. 1 was that the split window has less visibility when all along the lower half of the split was an additional view. Many other brand in the cross price range n higher has cheaper material... (this newer design has way more cheaper part). The larger screen as requested by none mitsubishi fans n reviewers makes no dam sense as it only increase in height n not width.. 16:9 way better than the now aspect ratio plus it was a way cleaner look without the knobs... 1 knob should be most place on an entertainment display. Complain about trunk space n I am yet to use a 1/4 of space in older model. ( if i need space i just buy a dam truck) Simply put the unique stand out characteristic that the original designer had is now taken away.... it has now becaomes the average suv on the road (especially the rear end) Only positive is the new front dimension are on parr n looks better yet still not by far. These changes though requested will not cause anybody who follow negative stigma of mitsubishi to purchase the cross ... mitsubishi should stick to its course as the cross was beginning to grow on people. Instead many present owners are disappointed with new design

Great review! Agree on all of the points you've tackled but for me, I wouldn't be too bummed about the tech not being too advanced as the brand has always focused on keeping everything balanced and being on the functional side. Having this simpler tech would make a lot of people have a better time dealing with it and that for me is quite an advantage for most people. Hoping Mitsubishi Motors PH will also bring this in our market, the lack of a crossover is kind of a bummer given that they've focused more on the Xpander & Xpander Cross and the Montero(Pajero) Sport.

Hello Paul, just subbed you. I have the eclipse cross for 2 years now. Love the car. Absolutly no problem untill now. This is the second most powerfull 1.5l in the martek (after Honda) . Very punchy and reletivly economical. It has direct and indiret injection. Because of this, there is no carbon acumulation (indirect). The oil is 0w20, very expensive, but the best for this kind of "small" turbo engine. I have the 6 speed manual with hand manual break. I like the tail gate of mine better because it is unique and has the back wipper hidden on top. The visibility is a little limited (but not to much). The interior is the best mitsubishi has to offer. Like i said, me and expecially the wife, love the car.

It was between the Seltos Sport and the Eclipse for me and honestly the Eclipse is so much sleeker. Although the Seltos drove very smoothly, the Eclipse was just punchier. I also found with the Seltos that although the ‘tech’ side had more to offer, it was almost too much.. too many things yelling at me and there was too much happening on the screen. The interior was also very boring. I think the GT line is probably nicer in the Seltos range, but even the base model for the Eclipse is beautiful and it’s 10k cheaper. End of the day, depends what you want but the new Eclipse is super nice in both affordability, style and drive.

For us it is also between Seltos and Eclipse Cross. We want it for my dad. In the place we live, we have only one version in the saloon (2.0 engine, 2WD, without front row heating/cooling). I told my dad that "it doesn't have heated/cooled seats + no 2 zone climate + no panoramic roof as well, and he simply replied "so what ?" )) I agree with his points such as, today every car offers so much that we think we need them. He likes this car's view, comfort, ride experience and safety. What else is needed ?

Your faults outlined are valid but overall its a great city car. I did my research and test drives on other cars in this range and found this one was the best for the following points: value for money, looks, ride,safety features and 10 year capped price servicing and warranty. The tech stuff you can get passed with the Android Auto which does what is supposed to.

I have driven a Lancer SX for the past 12 years & just clicked over to 335,000 km's. During this time she has never skipped a beat. Yes the tech is not over the top but I love that. It is easy to use & integrate & I know how to use the phone book function Paul was finding difficult, it is similar to my lancer now which couldn't be simpler. Since making the decision to upgrade, I have test drove a mixed bag of cars including a Skoda Karoq sportline, Mercedes Benz GLC 250, Kia Seltos GTLine, Hyundai Tuscon, Kia Sportage, a BMW X1 & of course my pick. Although I was tempted to purchase a "luxury" car, they are just too expensive to run & are often problematic, rendering my decision a no brainer. The eclipse cross drove beautifully & quiet & had plenty of grunt & get up ,& boogie when I needed it AND it looks great. In the end it was a no brainer for me & I absolutely CANNOT wait to pick up my special order Exceed. The 10 10 was just unbeatable & I know first hand just how good & reliable a car they are.

I bought a 2020 in July. In the US, Mitsubishi is trying to rebuild their brand and get out of a sales slump. As such, they are selling them much cheaper than the msrp. I mean my car payment is less than 300 a month for a brand new, well equipped SUV. Can't beat it when holding up against the competition, in that regard The warranty, the style, and the price make it a winner for me. I love my EC!

I know on the redesign (restyled) Eclipse Cross in the USA they re tuned the springs and shocks and added larger parts to rear suspension and am curious if this new one rides better than the 2018-2020 Eclipse Cross over large bumps. I do like the rear of my 2019 better as it was the main selling point for me and the reason I bought the car. But Americans people do not like the split rear style apparently and we know how picky us Americans are. So they got rid of it which sucks.

Here in Kuwait, Mitsubishi is the number 1 brand between cheap labor people. It's so reliable but it's a hidden gem between fellow Kuwaitis. Most of Kuwaitis prefer Toyota. I'm glad I chose mitsubishi

It is funny, because of Kuwait's economy it is "number 1 brand between cheap labor people". In most of countries I've been, these segment is totally not for labor people. At least mid-up range.

Hi Paul. Can you please do a review on the 2021 Updated Toyota Fortuner :)
@Handlesplus

I’ve got to say Paul that although I generally like the car, I absolutely hate the CVT. Constantly Variable Transmissions are just so uninspiring and it feels like you are wasting power. I actually have a Pajero Sport but that has an eight speed auto transmission which is very nice. Having said all that I am looking forward to the new 2022 Outlander which looks absolutely amazing!
@CarExpertAus

The gearbox in the Paj Sport is nice. A CVT won't be for everybody, but it works well with this engine.

My Lancer had a CVT and given how poorly insulated the cabin was it was very loud and thrashy (yet not very fast). I think I’m happier now with a car with a standard 6sp auto.

If you press and hold the voice key it activates Siri or Google Assist for voice calls so setting up voice tags is not required.
@stuartmunto4755
@stuartmunto4755 3 года назад
Paul was saying without a smart phone connected, you have to set up voice tags - the car has a very outdated and lackluster voice control system. Not everyone connects their smart phone to their car all the time, so a new car not being able to simply dial contacts is well behind. Even a 2012 commodore could do it

@largelampard3721 3 года назад
@@tajminurrahman7381 The test seems odd to me that it got 15km/l at mid speed cruising and 11km/l at hight speed. But anyway, accelerate while going downhill and maintain speed while going uphill, if the momentum is enough to get over the hill I will let the speed drop. I seldom use brake, use gear to regulate the speed before corner and in traffic. Unless terrain requires or in a hurry, I don't get rpm over 1500, although it's cvt it still helps if you keep rpm low. I get better fuel efficiency than tested result in most cars. Also, be really gently while pushing the pedal whether it's throttle or brake.

Nice review , the redesign looks much better, all that's missing is rear ac vents , the eclipse cross is very sound mechanically and simple to repair. It uses multi port injection and does not suffer from carbon build up like mazda skysctiv (gdi) and Kia Gamma (gdi ) engine While the interior of those vehicles are better, mitsu has much better mechanical design and very similar to toyota in reliability.

I had a nearly new rental this week in the Pilbara (4000Km on odo). Drove it from Karratha to Port Hedland and back. The ride felt harsh on bumps. Acceleration was sufficient to overtake road trains - pity there is no manual. Fuel economy and ride weren't as good as my 10yo Civic.

It would be nice if you could possibly start saying where the speakers are located. Rather than just saying it's an 8 speaker stereo, you could say it's an 8 speaker stereo with one being a subwoofer, or three of which are in the dashboard, something like that. Could also be interesting to try and find them all in expensive cars with 12, 14 speaker stereos.

It is interesting, I see that most people (including myself) tries to choose one of these 2 :) I would say that, listen to your heart. Any of them maybe better than other one in any particular term (since they are very close). Just drive whichever you feel fits you better. What can happen in worst case ? - after using for 1-3 years, if you think you are not comfy with it, I guess you can always change it (considering you won't loose that much - at least this is case in my country). Good luck with your choice.
