Every time I have talked with an Ibis owner, they have always had great things to say about their bikes. Being a fan of DW-linked bikes for a long time, I was rather stoked to get this Ripmo AF in my hands for a long-term review. When I found out I was getting the coil sprung version I was already planning some rowdy rides in my head to really put it to the test.
Ibis sent out a 2020 spec’d model as inventory was low for 2021, and there are some key updates to the 2021 model on the parts list that are explained below. I got this bike in late September and rode it in the PNW and down in Phoenix Arizona, offering a great range of conditions from greasy root fests through to scary dry days on completely blown out trails.
THE DIRT
I was lucky enough to get a variety of riding terrain and weather conditions during this long-term review. Up in Washington I rode some super rough cut single track with big rolling compressions, and down in Arizona I got my fill of undulating trails littered with loose rocks and unforgiving rock gardens. The Ripmo AF handled the different terrain in both zones well, allowing me to push the bike and my limits to the max, and I enjoyed the heck out of every lap.
During the time I had on the Ripmo AF, I logged around 30,000 feet of descent with next to no mechanical issues. I checked frame bolts around every 5th ride and not a single bolt wiggled loose throughout the test period. The burly clevis link on this bike does add some weight but the amount of stiffness and long-term durability is well worth a few extra grams in my eyes. If I were to purchase this bike, I would invest in some foam cable housing for the down tube as there is a fair amount of noise from the internally routed cabling. It is a cheap upgrade I do on my personal bikes, and one that would do a great job of quietening the Ibis down.
After an initial acclimatizing period, I found myself able to relax a bit behind the bars in the chunky rock of Arizona and let the bike really work through rough sections of trail. I found it easy to pick my line and stay committed to the end, even with loads of golf ball to softball sized rocks littered across nearly every trail. Even with this bike being larger than I am used to riding it still sported a playful feel when I wanted to get airborne or change direction to avoid a rattle snake - yes that really happened - managing to maintain a level of agility that reminds you it’s not a purebred enduro race machine. The 495mm reach sounded too long on paper but when riding the bike, it felt nearly perfect. I would have liked to have had a 35mm stem instead of the stock 50mm for riding in Washington, but in Arizona the longer stem helped keep more weight on the front wheel both when climbing and descending, aiding traction in the loose flat turns...

I picked this up the day it released. It has been the do everything bike it promised. I've done 30 mile xc epics, 40 ft jumps, road gaps, you name it. Ibis is a pleasure to work with as well. For the price, for us non-doctors, it just slays everything so well. Negatives? I don't think it's very pretty and the regressive curve at the end of travel finds bottom out pretty easy for an aggressive rider. Your recap is perfect really.

That's pretty much my take too. The weight can be an issue on longer climbs. I would also STRONGLY suggest going to 170 cranks if your bike doesn't come with them (mine did, despite the spec sheet saying 175s), that BB is LOW. the Topaz does bottom out fairly easily, but I've rarely had a hard bottom out on it, despite being 250lbs and being a fairly aggressive rider, the Topaz definitely has a supple feel and the rear wheel tracks really well, but still has enough pop to jump really well. The Ripmo is also very stable in the air.

Got myself a slx build a couple of weeks ago. I've got to say I'm really impressed! The dvo suspension and overall package is incredible. The only thing I'll change are the bars. Their a bit flexi! Apart from that I can't fault it .

Hi Great thanks for the great review of the bicycle. The other You Tubers reviewers do an infomercial on all the components and they don't describe or talk about how it rides. You did a great job at that, describing how the bike rides up, down, flat. the suspension and cornering,,,, the pros and cons. Thanks

The slx build is great! Never worry about the gears, it’s rock solid and I have never touched the wheel the s35$ are bomb proof.

Riding a carbon Ripley and I love it. Looking for a second bike for the more gnarly downhills and smashing rocks. At the price point this bike may be it. Stoked to see all the awesome reviews.

I've been beating the shit out of my 2020 ripmo AF since November. No real issues with the bike. It does everything well. I mostly ride chunky trail 100 by dreamy draw and Pyramid hitting the jump lines. I recently switched to a one up components handle bar and it really livened up the front end in a positive way to get up the more technical climbs on birthday hill. The biggest negative on the bike for me is the amount of play on the brake lever on the guide brakes. They stop well, but there is a ton of slop before you get to the initial bite while braking. This bike definitely rips though!

My Ripmo AF rattled bad. It was the internal routed cables. I pulled tension where they come out and put double zip ties on cables. No more internal rattle.

I recently got the Ripmo V2 with fox 36 and float X2 suspension and the air shock really does make the bike feel really poppy, which is great for jumps and not so much for chunky trails. I was going back and forth on either an air or coil for this bike and found trying to dial in the air for a really planted feel has been a little hard. But it could be my inexperience with the X2 shock as it is my first time using one. But the Ripmo has been a great bike for me and I love it. Like you I am always fiddling with setups trying to dial it in for certain trails.

Interesting, I've heard the X2 is supposed to have a very coil-like feel, where it's almost hard to get it poppy, maybe Ibis just uses a really light tune on it. The Topaz has a nice balance between poppy and planted, though without the extensive adjustments of the X2.

@@mrvwbug4423 Ibis does run a really light tune on it and I have been trying to dial it in where I prefer it. But since it’s my first time using one it’s just taking some time to get used to it. With all the individual adjustments it’s easy to get lost in weeds of adjustments if you aren’t writing things down and adjusting one thing at a time.

Having a hard time deciding between the 2023 Ripmo v2s or the 2023 Ripley v4s... this will be my first full suspension mountain bike (i've always ridden hardtails, I'll be coming off a 2021 Salsa Timberjack w/ a 130mm front fork). I mainly ride undulating flow trails with chunky tree roots in Alaska, but do a big big trip every year towards the moab/colorado/northwest area. The big factor is I broke my back and neck 3 years ago whitewater kayaking, so I'm looking to soften the hard ride of the softtail up. I would love to have a lighter bike like the Ripley, but the extra cush of the Ripmo would probably feel better on my back. Any suggestions?

Did they change to an Onyx D1 for 2021? I got mine and was surprised to find out I had Onyx not Diamond based off of the youtube videos I'd seen.

Big difference in stiffness between GX and NX rear Mech for only $10 more. Immediately dump the assagai tires. Heavy and slow rolling.

Thanks for that great video. It is maybe not up to date, but I currently can get the bike for 1800eur/Dollar in nearly new condition . I think about getting it and putting -1deg head set into. I even talked recently with its creator (Ibis head engineer ) and he is curious as well about how this will ride. What would you think. I am only confused about size: 5f8“ and it felt better in L which might be a little oversized and only allow 180mm dropper for me. But M felt a little cramped on the other side, especially while climbing . What would you say to that?

They're not speccing Codes. SRAM build has G2 Rs on the 2021 build. The base build that most people buy has Deore 12 speed drivetrain and Deore 4 pots which are better than Guides, but you will want to upgrade if you plan on park days. Also the fork for 2021 is the DVO Onyx SC which is their burly enduro fork, and is supposed to feel more like the DH fork it's based on. I have the 2021 Deore build, it was pretty much good to go out of the box, I upgraded the brakes to XTs because the Deores felt marginal on steeps, they lose modulation when hot like the MT-520s they are based on. I demoed a 2020 last year so have ridden both forks, but I didn't have enough time on the demo bike to really form an opinion on the Diamond, the Onyx SC is the best fork I've ever ridden, it's supportive without having to mess with volume spacers and also very smooth off the top.

I think they were speccing codes a few months back but they have now changed as the gx build is a mix of gx and nx, accompanied with the g2s.

The cable rub, especially on the drive side by the bottom bracket is a bummer. Some tape fixes that, but there's a few rub points on that bike that go through the paint pretty quick if you're not aware or paying attention to it. Wish they would have given the linkage some rock protection like they do on the carbon frame. Again not the biggest deal in the world as it's aluminum. But having rocks get stuck in there can be a pain, and it's another place the paint gets damaged quick.

Been in a dilemma of choosing the ripley af or ripmo af for out here in Vegas. Finally moving up to my first full suspension after using an entry level hardtail and decided to go for the ripmo af once I heard they had one available at a local bike shop. Extremely excited to hear that this is an all around bike as I was nervous this would be too much bike for me. Can’t wait for my bike to appear in the next few days!

For Vegas I'd go Ripmo, someday you will probably ride Bootleg canyon, and the Ripley is definitely not the bike for there.

The Ripmo has better suspension. The Meta's single pivot is fine for descending, but isn't going to climb nearly as well

How tall are you and what did you end up with? I’m 6’1 1/2 and demos the L and Xl today. I feel slightly too big for the L and slightly too small on the XL. I have long legs and arms and a shorter torso. Leaving toward an XL with a shorter stem but I’m really having a hard time with size up or down. I wish the large was just a tad bit bigger!!

No clutch.... not on my NX. I don't like it. I wish I would have gotten the Shimano drivetrain

NX and SX have a clutch, SRAM clutches don't have a switch like Shimano clutches, they also aren't a tight as Shimano clutches. SRAM does have the very convenient button to lock the derailleur in the loose position to make wheel removal easier.

They have one, but after a month, mine didn't work at all. Maybe that's what he noticed, no clutch switch + non-functional clutch = no clutch...

yea, it would be interesting to see how good the tolerances are, how aligned everything is, like if BB threads are aligned, if BB shell is aligned, if welds are good, if head tube and other holes are completely round and up to spec. another thing most don't mention is flex, tyre clearance, but this bike will probably be stiff enough for most. many big brands might have issues with the quality, but I haven't seen much of this type of info on Ibis bikes. But if you want to try Trek, I say don't, I've had some of these issues I mentioned and more, now I own Nicolai/Geometron G1, no issues, stiff enough , robust and great quality.

I ordered a Ripmo AF Deore, in Lisbon. It should arrive next month. I was between those two, also. But I chose the Ripmo mainly because of the LBS support, much better suspension and Commencal was out of stock indefinitely.

I would not go for Mera, as they have issues with the bearings getting pushed out at the rocker link, if going for Commencal I would go for Commencal Clash, cus it has proper pivots, so this can't happen, seems robust and stiff, I have chatted with a owner, and he is a big fat guy, and it's stiff enough and did not snap. So looks promising, I think he had it for a year now.

So you talk about wanting an L rather than XL. I’m curious if you ended up getting an L and how you like it? I’m 6’1 1/2 with long legs and arms but short torso. I demo’d both sizes today and truly feel like I’m perfectly in between sizes. L felt a tad small and XL felt a tad big. Debating on having the smaller/less stable L and making it feel a little bigger, or the XL with a 35 mm stem. Damn analysis paralysis!

I don’t think their specing code rsc. Maybe G2s. If they are specing the codes, that’s an awesome upgrade. I have them on my ripmo AF and a big upgrade over stock.

Ibis has been shipping bikes with off spec parts due to supply issues. My Deore build AF came with the Bike Yoke dropper instead of the KS dropper (huge upgrade :) ), and 170 cranks instead of 175 cranks (also a good change, the Ripmo should use 170 cranks). I also know of some Deore builds that shipped with SLX brakes.

The build specs changed quite a few times during the time of our testing, when I made my notes their site was spacing Codes. And it changed again of course, good eye!

at 6'2" you'll probably want the XL. I'm 5'10" and my size L Ripmo AF is a perfect fit

Yeah for me I do not need a bigger bike even though I have very long arms for 6' 1". I prefer 775mm - 780mm reach. My riding zones are pretty tight and do not have a ton of ultra high speed sections so stability is not an issue. I did like the XL but I did feel it held me back a touch. - Cole
