2021 Sienna Hybrid Oil Change (Full Tutorial) 

Was hoping you were also doing the transmission oil change. I'm shocked at how we have almost exactly the same tools, oil, oil drain tray and even the same coveralls for oil changes! Good job!

Thanks for posting. Nothing wrong with Fram filters. I use them on my Toyotas and Hondas. I just use the more expensive type that can go at least 10k or 15k miles. But I oil change every 5k miles. These engines are bulletproof.

I do not recommend Fram oil filters, problems with them in the past. Also, I recommend adding 4 quarts - running the engine for 1 minute, then adding more oil as needed to reach the proper level on the oil dip stick. I've seen my friends overfill their oil by doing the replace what you removed method (not an accurate method). Also, oil pan bolt torque is important. I've experienced over torquing (stripping out threads) on oil pans - not a fun fix. Otherwise, GREAT video! Thanks!

As a general rule, Never refill oil back to the amount removed. Fill it to the spec then verify on the dipstick. You have no way of knowing if it was overfilled before unless you changed it.

Hybrids can collect a lot of moisture in the oil, it’s a good idea to put only 4.5 quarts back in, not whatever you take out, since what you took out includes significant amounts of water and fuel.

Nice video, however: Easier oil change in vehicles like caravan I believe 2011 up with filter located on the top. How about checking oil level with dipstick. In older vehicles drained oil volume not always equal oil that supposed to go in either way.

Thank you for making this oil change look easy! I have a 2024 Sienna Limited and have wanted to change the oil prior to the 10K miles but have heard conflicting information on whether to do it or not. Some say the manufacturer uses break in oil for the first oil change so leave it alone, and others say just do what the manufacture requires which is 10k, and then again , others say, you should change the first oil after 1000 miles. I have 6.9K after 5 months of use of mostly highway miles from 2 long trips of 2.8K each. Well, I’m over the 1 K, but still less than the 10k. I suppose it would help to just replace the oil now. Thanks for demonstrating how to reset the maintenance reminder. That’s a bit annoying.

My Toyota dealership recommended 6000 mile oil changes and tire rotations. So that’s what I got for the first two years.

Change your oil every 5000 miles to prevent oil burning in the long run. The 10K interval comes with many exceptions.

Good video. I'd say the same comment as someone previously about the dealership possibly overfilling the oil. I have the same engine (A25A-FXS) in my 2022 Toyota Camry hybrid and I double-checked the oil dipstick the other day and it was over the second dot/max fill line after the engine was cooled off for 15-30 min of driving. Double-checked the dipstick after letting it sit overnight and still over the full line. Kinda pissed me off so I just drained it and put exactly 4.5 qts in it. Now the oil level is on the upper end of the two dots but not over the max fill line after letting the engine cool off.

Those oil filter pliers...The other guy in the other video used a socket oil filter wrench and made it look sooo easy....and then when I go to do it I can't get the God damned 1/2 ratchet in there.

Wonderful. Only thing is…some gorilla at the Toyota Stealership probably just dumped in 5 qts. Check the dipstick rather than what the last guy did, or risk fouling your plugs. Toyota says 4.5 for a reason. Great video. You seem like a great guy.

Dude, tks for the quik steps on the oil change BUT you are missing the accuracy and the fine points, including Lexus/Toyota instructions (I did not say 'dealers' because some personnel can be wrong ). Your way of determining proper oil fill level is not error proof, proper or reliable instructions. Per info I know: On cold engine with new oil on this 2.5L, just fill to halfway mark on the dip stick is a good starting point before u start to check and top off. Reminders: Prior to oil change, drive vehicle till oil is warm to circulate sediment so that you can drain them out. Proper way for oil level check on the 2.5L is: (If oil change is involved, underfilled to 1/2 qt below oil capacity specs. Add the step of starting up the car for a few minutes after an oil change to ensure oil filter has been filled. Let car sit for 30 min. Then check the oil level for level at 1/2 way market. Top off to that 1/2: way level as needed. Double check the next day after driving to hot/warm engine temperature. Shut off and let the car sit for 15 min. to let extra oil drain down, check the level of the warm/hot oil. If it hits the top mark, you are perfectly full. Above that is overfilling) 1. Park on level ground. The engine should be warm/hot up(the warm oil expands by about 1/2 quart) 2. Pop the hood and locate the dipstick. 3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and clean it off with a cloth. 4. Place the dipstick back into its tube, then pull it out. 5. Look at both sides to see where the oil level falls. 6. If the oil streak reaches either the cross-hatched area(or the indicator lines), you’re done. (The blank area between the 2 marks is 1 quart) 7. If the oil streak falls below the recommended level, add more oil with a funnel. Do not overfill. 8. This 2.5L engine is very sensitive to overfilling which can cause various issues/damages. If it is below 1/2 way mark and very close to the low mark, you have to be very careful. Either top off or if you are close to oil change interval, check weekly. DIYers, it sounds complicated but it is not once you understand that hot oil expands and that is when they want you to check that the oil level is somewhere in the blank area. When it is close to the low mark, you be very careful and do not let it drop below, if you are stretching it to an upcoming oil change. On this 2.5, it is sensitive to overfilling.

Great videos! I have been wanting to start changing my own oil as I used to do it all the time. Other than the oil and filter supplies, what ramps are you using to elevate the vehicle and are you doing just the front end or all 4 wheels? I need to invest in a set to start.

What about the gasket on the drain plug? I see that it's stuck to the oil pan in my case (I have it off now, I'm mid-change). Is it the kind you're supposed to replace every change? I've had those before.

Does it matter if I use mobil one synthetic 0-20w (verses the 0-16w) 2024 Toyota sienna hybrid engine oil?

I recently changed the oil on my 2022 Sienna. Two observations. First, the drain plug washer did not fall with the drain plug when I removed the drain plug. Watch out for that. Second, the oil filter was on super freakin' tight. Be ready to do some battle. You're not going to get it off by hand.

Also it would be better for you if you changed the oil more than 10 thousand because the fuel injection system dilutes the oil.

Dude you lost me at FRAM. Only Toyota filter's please everybody they cost the same but have a check valve that keep motor oil in the filter to avoid dry starts.

We came from owning a volvo xc 60 new to buying a toyota sienna for hauling around the kids. Toyota's maintenance and warranty is terrible! Volvo has an excellent service program. It covered our brakes,oil, even the windshield wipers! You get 2 oil changes from toyota. Something to consider when purchasing a vehicle. This will be our last toyota
