The All New 2021 Stumpjumper EVO : bit.ly/3E8MYuM
This new EVO is an absolute MUST RIDE if you're looking for a longer travel TRAIL BIKE. A 29er trail bike with 160mm fork and 150mm Horst-Link rear suspension.... it was incredibly fun! With a 65.5-63.5 degree HTA and 77 degree STA, it has excellent geometry for both climbing and descending. The EVO gives an emphasis on descending... and this bike goes down hill as well as any trail bike available right now!
Thanks again to, The Pros Closet for making videos like this possible.

Yum Yum, i dont know what you’ve experienced but i appreciate a good climbing bike as well. I own this bike and I have to say that it climbs great. Im one of the faster riders in my area, Northeast technical chunky trails. And I have reset all my PRs up and down on this bike. I agree that while it may not give you the “feeling” of being efficient, it’s deceiving because it produces a ton of grip allowing for all your power to be used effectively and thus no rear wheel skipping as is the case with some dual link bikes (yeti/ibis/pivot). For those watching this, the bike climbs very well. Get some carbon hoops snd faster rolling tires and watch what happens. Also, its not a small bike, sometimes a smaller rider doesn’t put out as much power to push it hard. At 185-190 riding weight I have no issues lushing this bike on ANY trail fast. Up and down, tame trails to rough. This is probably the lost adjustable and adaptable bike Ive ever owned. And Ive owned them all. Easy to ride fast bc Spesh does their homework on what works. Dont be deterred by the climbing dig this video takes, it climbs great 😉.

Totally agree. I'll say I think yumyum is a bit misguided on this one. I live in CO where we have a few hills here... and have owned dw-link bikes and Yeti's (SI). This bike climbs really well, especially tech. I'll take it over the Ripley I used to own for climbing if that says anything.

I've had my 2021 Evo for almost a year now, absolutely shreds, best bike I've owned. Swapped out the shock for an Ohlins tx22 coil, night and day difference, thing is am absolute beast! I don't know, I think it climbs just pretty damn well, barely a notch below the Ripmo, but damn does it blow it out on the decent. Of course I'm coming from a 35lb Commencal Meta, so anything climbs better after that! So many damn killer bikes out there today, can't really go wrong with any of them.

Jason that is also the discontinued Evo Limited which is a mullet out of the box! Looks like the owner set it up as a 29 with the beefier bike park set up(zeb), much better with the 36. I have the Evo pro which is my favorite bike I’ve ever owned. Good climber but an even better descender. It is also much lighter than that limited at 31.2 pounds on an S3! I just came off the switchblade and I’d say that climbing is the place it takes the cake over this but that’s about it!Love the content man

@mtbyumyum the bike you have is the LTD spec, which would have come as a mullet Setup from factory. I recommend you verify you have the correct suspension link to be running full 29er. Probably is but makes one wonder as that’s how the bike would have started it’s life. I purchased the 2021 Sworks evo and it came with the DPX2 and fox 36 . I am wondering if you had reviewed the evo in this spec if you would have found it to be more efficient. However, if I had to guess probably negligible. Regardless I love you reviews and appreciate the amount time and energy you put into them for us to enjoy.

Interesting, would the 29er wheel/tire fit in the back with the mullet link installed? I guess I just thought it wouldn't work with a bigger wheel back there... Soooo will you tell us after raving about how great the latest Pivot Trail 429 is, why you went with the Ripley? Is it because you are a lighter guy and like the flex you get from it vs the strong stiff 429? Do you get a better price from Ibis vs Pivot? Could it be you do not want the extra bottom bracket/pedal/Crankset clearance? Just trying to figure out how your words do not match your actions. Had a chance or care to experience and comment on the Trail 429 Enduro? Thank you for your experience and thoughtful videos and replies!!

Great review. I came from the previous firebird 29 to the MY21 evo and found the steeper seat tube on the evo huge improvement. Especially when climbing. Depending, the firebird feels a bit more stable and stiffer. The few things to notice with the evo is that it has exceptionally high leverage ratio that calls for the specific tune specialized did on the stock shock. I wonder how it will last over time when you have to pump the shock to 300 plus PSI. The other thing to notice is comp build with the crappy spec. Especially the harsh rythem 36 fox upfront and the heavy wheels

Great review as always. I suspect your climbing might have been better if the bike was spec'd with the Fox36/DPX2. The tune they have on the DPX2 for this bike is very nice and sporty. That ZEB is going to jack up the front end a bit and add some weight as well vs the Fox36. Secondly, the headset cups make small changes in the HT angle, but they make big changes in the wheelbase which I think might be more noticeable than the HT angle. For those willing to take a few minutes to adjust, the geo range on this bike is massive.

Great video Jason! Sooooo ultimate question this or standard new stumpjumper as a one only bike? How did you think it compared to standard stumpy downhill on the same JL descent?
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum 2 года назад
Good question. I actually think the Rocky Mountain Instinct would make an excellent 1 bike for my terrain if I were to only own 1 bike at a time. I would likely be looking at, Yeti SB130, RM Instinct, Trail 429 with Pike/Fox 36, SC Tallboy or Stumpy with Pike/Fox 36 or maybe.... just maybe, an Ibis Ripley with a 140mm Pike... maybe. As for JL descent... having a bigger fork is the key there... the fox 34 gets pushed to hard at those speeds and starts to feel a little scary. A longer bike at those speeds is really nice too... T429 and Ripley get pushed a bit on that trail but a bigger fork could make up the difference... in the end, the Instinct, SB130 and Stumpjumper are better get everything done sort of bikes.... but they're maybe not as much fun as the Ripley's of the world on all the other trails I ride each week

I’ve owned both. Last season I started out on a 21 Stumpjumper Comp Carbon. Although the EVO was my first choice, it’s what was available and ended up being a killer bike and there are many things I miss about it. I picked up a 22 SJ EVO S-Works frame, built it up, and only have 25 miles on it so far. I for sure needed the extra travel of the EVO and am stoked on the bike, but it’s definitely more of a tank and is not nearly as nimble and playful. If I could have built up the EVO without having to sell my reg SJ to cover it, I totally would have. Completely different bikes, in my opinion.

I bought a prime last spring and I'm switching out to (most likely) an Evo. I found the prime climbed poorly and the reach/TT lengths are just too short. I would have gone XL but the seat tube is too long. For comparison, I have a 180 one up v2 dropper in the large and it is as far in as it can go and the saddle is at the perfect hight. I have a 2014 rune XL and I have a 180 one up dropper on that and it isn't slammed. So really don't the changes they made to the V3 frames and seat tubes but they didn't build the frames to accommodate long droppers. I'm 6' with bike shoes for reference which puts me at the shorter side of their L sizing. BB to saddle height is 750mm. Also, they have a progressive linkage that is coil compatible but then ship the OE DPX2 shock with 0.8 volume spacer (IIRC). This is max for the shock making it as progressive as it possibly could be. At my sag I could not get anything beyond about 75% travel. And even with this, I couldn't get it to be good while climbing. Again, the 2014 rune was an excellent climber and better than the v3 prime. Im really not sure what they were going for but I do not recommend. Maybe someone else milage will vary. Edit: also, it's a little bit of a porky. I didn't think this would matter but at 36lbs with carbon rims, fox 36, slx 12 speed drive train I'm not sure I understand the frame weight reasoning. In addition, the bottom of the shock is almost impossible to get to. I have to use a multi tool to adjust the rebound adjusters on the shock I have. Edit 2: don't know why I came back to look at your post. But I just realize you said "technical climber". The prime is 100% that. Mountain goat like climbing. I rode up thinks that I shouldn't have been able to. The long rear end really get you that planted and stable feeling. If that's what you do, the prime is the bike for you.

In my opinion Fox is better for these longer travels because when you hit the climb switch, it actually comes close to locking out. Jason I love your reviews but I feel like you missed the mark on this one. It doesn’t seem like you played around with the headset or the seat stay adjustments at all. If it was just this bike without all of its adjustments it wouldn’t have won pinkbike bike of the year. The stay adjustments not only raise/lower the bb but they also lengthen/shorten the stays which is important. With all the adjustments it allows the bike to because a super snappy fun trail bike in the high/steep position and a super stable and planted enduro machine in the long/low. If you didn’t get to test at least half of the setting available, you didn’t truly ride this bike. I have owned a lot of bikes in this class (ripmo, lá sal peak, 2018 enduro, evil wreckoning v1) and there are bikes that climb better for sure. The ripmo puts the evo in a corner when climbing. But there is nothing with less travel and nothing the same class that descends as well as this bike in the low/long setting. Heck, it gives a lot of true enduro bikes a run for the money. I mean it can become slacker than the new enduro. And the ability to make it into a more sporty trail oriented bike for my every day rides is so nice. It’s not perfect but as a serial bike buyer/seller I’ve had a hard time finding a reason to get something else.

I hear you! And totally wish I had more time to spend on this bike... and this channel. I had no idea this was "pinkbike bike of the year" and you have to understand, they can spend a lot of time on a bike for a review... it's their job. You can't even begin to imagine the hurdles in the way of me doing this channel... first, if I was the pinkbike guy doing reviews I'd have the bike for a 2 months or more just to noodle around on before even having to get out the camera gear to start filming and writing a script. All the while getting paid... I make like $2 an hour here lol, have a full time job and family along with other obligations and hobbies. Second, there are no bike companies sending me bikes to demo... I spend a lot of time trying to get bikes to ride and film. I don't have 80+ hours to dedicate to a video once I get a bike so, you get what I had time to do and that's the best I can do. In all reality, I gave people a look at the bike, and was able to compare it with other bikes I've ridden in the category... and that's more than what most other reviewers do... pinkbike, bikemag and many others area complete jokes in my opinion.... they likely didn't even dog the bike for not climbing all that well... because then they would get the ever important BIG S marketing money spent on their website... They say what they're paid to say.... basically reading from a script regurgitating bike jargin bs.... To your point, you're right... I didn't get a chance to discuss the depth of the bike geo and offerings..... I'll bet ya 80% of the people that buy this bike never change it from the configuration I rode it in anyway. And last of all, if I was on the payroll of most other reviewers making a promising living and able to provide for my family doing this, I would have delivered... but this channel isn't anywhere close to paying the bills so I give it the amount of time and attention I can and try not to beat myself up for not doing as well as the other deep pocketed legit bike reviewer channels or websites.

@@tonybasoni8443 I really liked the la sal. I think it's one of the better climbers for that travel range. My buddy and I switched bikes the other day so he could ride my evo. The seat angle of his la sal was very apparent next to my evo. If you're only taking pedaling platform into account then it's definitely not quite the rocket ship that the ripmo is. But the very steep seat angle and minimal pedal bob for a Horst link bike put it just below the ripmo on fire road climbs. On a technical climb I think the seat angle and increased grip of the Horst link give it the edge. I haven't ridden the Delano. My understanding is that it has all the goods of the la sal in a shorter travel package. Either way the Fezzari is such a great price it's sometimes hard to justify much else in it's class.

My Switchblade climbs well, but its the technical climbing that I feel could be better. So up the fireroads etc, when I mash the pedal the bike moves forward with authority. No bob, very efficient, but up rocky technical stuff the rear seems a bit stiff and I tend to deflect and spin out. As opposed to a glued to the ground bike like some of the plush Enduros.
