2022 Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Alloy Review - Is This Bike Worth It?

The Loam Wolf recently tested out the 2022 Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Alloy. Designed to be ridden hard and offer top-shelf performance at a more affordable price point, the Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Alloy is a bike that doesn't short on quality. Featuring very adjustable geometry, creature comforts like SWAT Box, and more. The Specialized Stumpjumper Evo is an aluminum shredder that we've thoroughly enjoyed testing!
It's a fun and playful 150/160mm 29er that can also be run as a mullet bike with a 27.5 rear end, but for our terrain and riding style, we opted to keep it in full 29 for full speed! The Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Alloy has many features that contribute to its overall ride quality, and our test bike was nothing short of this.
We're huge fans of aluminum mountain bikes and believe having good geo, quality suspension spec and all-around capabilities on the trail are far more important than carbon fiber.

I've ridden and owned a ton of bikes (pivots, evil, GG, ibis, yeti, SC, trek, etc) and I've always gone back and forth between 29 for roll over and 27.5 for agility and cornering. My SJ EVO is the only bike I've ridden that combines both attributes so perfectly, it's literally mind bending how this bike corners like a 27.5 bike but can straight line and roll over chunk with it's 29" wheels. It doesn't feel as peppy as a dw link pedaling under power but it's still super efficient once you get it moving (pinkbikes efficiency tests proves this). Crazy for a bike that feels as supple and fast as it is on the descents.

The value of the frame and shock is unmatched. Float X, threaded BB, internal routing, full headset, adjustable geo, and SWAT?! No brainer. Built one up with GX, hunt wheels and a Lyrik for under 4k. Still can’t believe how well the thing rides.

I don't know if I'd be over my head by contemplating building one up from a frame. Spesh has these frames for $1200 pre-tax which is reallly tempting. I would want to go with a GX drivetrain too but have no clue what wheelset, fork, etc.

I bought the 2021 EVO comp carbon with full SLX build 13 months ago now for the full retail price at the time of $4100. What a bargain that was in hindsight. The comp alloy is only $100 less now and the current carbon comp is $5100. A $1000 increase in one year.

I don’t care for Specialized, but here are my thoughts. The original MSRP of their bikes last year was too low. There were bargains to be found in the 3-5k market. Now they repriced more in line with the market. They might be a bit ahead of everyone else-I expect everyone to have stupid pricing by late summer.

I am an aluminium fan, But I am not sure what to buy. I have to make a decision between the stumpjumper evo comp alloy and the specialized enduro. I am really struggeling with that decision. The enduro is in carbon but has the better components, The stumpy is a bit more flexibel for the daily trail rides. When it gets on worse terrain i think the enduro gives more stability and safety. But I saw a few videos about broken carbon frames of the enduro, that didn´t sound good. What do you think? Is the stumpy the better deal?

Bought my first "real" bike in 2016 for $600. Now $3800 is considered affordable and budget. It's almost like something happened along the way.
@conman1395
@conman1395 Год назад
600 dollar bikes back then are just as good as 7-800 dollar bikes today. You're just echoing a trope that's been echoed for well over a decade. A bike with actual Fox suspension for 3800 is a great deal. It's also a bike that you can literally take from the store to a double black trail immediately and ride it just as well as the S-Works bike that's 10k. You absolutely cannot do that with a sub-1000 bike without multiple compromises somewhere. There are zero compromises on this bike. A little critical thinking goes a long way.

I really dislike the brake-jack of SC. The suspension isnt active when you brake. Know all those braking bumps on the trails? Those are cause by SC type suspension, and hard tails. Active suspension (specialized) floats even while braking. Look at the superior rear suspension pivot at the time stamp 3:35 if you dont know what I'm talking about.
@piciu256
@piciu256 2 года назад
Aspecially with specialized, that "larger company should make better bikes" somehow doesn't work in reality, most bikes today are pretty damn good, so it does more often than not come down to what parts are hanging off the frame.

@@MPurs09 personal preference. It is a big bike, I’m relatively lean/trim long arms/legs, size large jersey, 33” waist, 172 lbs (just for body type context). I’m very happy with the size however and I don’t feel cramped, the bike is very comfortable and lets me stretch out a little. Tight, Hairpin turns require a little more thought/speed control but this is my first 29’r so some learning curve. Other consideration, S4 will probably have broader appeal down the road it you decide to sell for next upgrade.

Is it worth doing a frame up build with an alloy frame but putting much higher quality components on it that you would find on a much more expensive bike? Seeing that alloy vs carbon is about $800 difference? Ex: Fox factory 36, Fox float x2, carbon bars, GX and up drivetrain, possibly carbon wheels?
@TheLoamWolf

As a roadie having moved to the mountains, I tend to avoid any aluminum framed bike (steel serotta). Usually aluminum is harsh for a road bike. Does that same unfortunate harshness transfer to a MTN bike with suspension or no?
@blangeleven
@blangeleven 2 года назад
No, it usually doesn't. I ride road and MTB. The suspension makes way more of a difference in the feel and ride quality. Plus, you can always design a bike of a given material to be more stiff or compliant just based on the thickness and shaping of the tubes.
@alext4124
@alext4124 2 года назад
Brice Lang is spot on. Plus coming from the road bike world where traction is never an issue, I'd be more than apt to recommend and good alloy bike seeing as you'll probably end up on your bum more than once. It's all part of the learning curve, and I'd cringe to see my carbon framed MTB go sliding or even tumbling down the trail. Welcome to MTB!

@JoshTaylor 2 года назад
What did you guys notice most between the SJ Evo and SJ?
@joelwenzel6044
@joelwenzel6044 2 года назад
They are very different bikes. The SJ is 140/130 and built around being a light, well rounded trail bike than can climb especially well with the carbon flex stays. The SJ Evo is for someone who favors aggressive riding and descending. It's 160/150, has way more geo positions, 6 vs 2, and beefier components. Fox 36 vs 34, codes vs g2 etc. Most riders will be very happy with the regular SJ, it's gonna be great on 90% of what most mountain bikers ride. But if you seek out steep, fast, chunky trails, and love to drop, jump and send it, the EVO is probably the bike for you
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf 2 года назад
This is a more planted, composed and harder charging bike on the downhills and when sending it big. The SJ is a bit more trail bike oriented. It's faster handling, more nimble, by a bit, and is generally a great option for riders on mellower trails more consistently. Or looking for efficiency, climbing and techy, flat trails. If you prioritize shredding DH, this is the call.
