It's been quite some time since I've uploaded a new video so lets get things going again with a long term review of my beloved 2021 Specialized Stumpjumper Evo comp. In this video I glaze through most of the components on the bike and explain how well it's performed after about 600 miles of rowdy trail riding.

Good, honest review. I have this bike in the UK. Only swap is the grips. I thought I’d swap the saddle too, as I’m a sucker for a Charge Spoon, but this stock saddle is even nicer than that! I’m also just one crash in. That’s what you get when you’re not looking ahead. Great channel. Love the content. Looking forward to keeping up with your next instalments. Thank you

I’m looking at upgrading my base stumpy alloy for an evo comp or expert. Might be more bike than I need. Love your attitude though man. Very matter of fact. Not over hyping stuff. Also, my buddy had a similar tire issue. He emailed spesh directly and they requested one photo and sent him a new tire. Rock on.

I've got this bike. My impressions on the suspension were reversed. 0 problems on the shock, but the fork kept having problems with getting stuck down. Took it to the shop and Fox recommended pumping it up to 120 psi and working it until it blew the grease out of the port between the air chambers. It works, but I'd already ordered a nicer fork, so I stuck that on and didn't look back. I got two punctures on the Eliminator, then a cut big enough it wouldn't seal even with 3 tire plugs. Not super happy with the Eliminator tire quality. Personal preference, but I also didn't like the grips or saddle and changed them out very quickly. Other than that, it runs like a dream. The SLX drivetrain works great even with hits to the derailleur that left sizable scratches. The brakes are also great, love the metallic pads. Just did my first chain replacement after doing a 25 mile race through some nasty mud.

Came back just to thank you for reviewing NOT the top end only stuff. Great to see an advanced rider on the comp and rolling with what it offers! That being said, would you go comp all over again if you were buying this year? I think I would but I HATE the comp colors for this year! I like black or exposed carbon matte type looks. So torn!
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
Hey Kenny. 100% would comp again! For some reason it’s easier for me to buy higher spec stuff when I’m replacing broken parts than it is for me to chuck all the money at once at a top spec bike. For this bike specifically I think the comp hits a real sweet spot in cost/quality. This spec is STRONG and relatively affordable. Run it till something breaks! Odds are, whatever breaks the mid-spec parts would’ve broken the top spec too. And performance gains are minimal. Can’t help you with the color options though 🤣

Hey dude, I’m loving the channel! I recently got lucky and found a new 2021 expert build. Because of an injury, I haven’t been able to ride at all for the last two months so I’ve just been staring at it in my garage and filling my time reading through the evo thread on the pinkbike forum. Turns out that last bit was a mistake: all the stories of cracked down tubes from run-of the-mill rock strikes has me a bit freaked out. I live in SoCal too and random rocks kick up somewhat regularly where I tend to ride, but I’ve always had alloy frames and haven’t given any thought to it. What has your experience with that been like? Any damage to the down tube underneath the guard?
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
Hey Jason! Thanks for the good vibes! Congrats on the sick bike! What a find in these times! I haven’t had any issues with rocks damaging the downtube. I think the factory protection is pretty solid. I’ve heard some big knocks on my downtube several times and haven’t incurred any damage beyond a bit of a bite out of the rubber guard by the bottom bracket and a couple small scratches from the same instance. I’ve also heard that spesh is pretty great about warranty and crash-replacement issues so there’s always that. Remember, the bike is a “tool, not a jewel” and it was designed to mash down a trail. Heal up and ride the shit out of it!

'Preciate the feedback on your experience with the Evo. It recently popped up on my radar as maybe a scoot I want to test out. Been checkin' reviews, and yours came up. That was some burly trail sections you threw at that bike, and on their own, were an impressive testament to the Stumps' ability. The terrain has a very 'out west' feel (Nevada, Cali., or Arizona maybe??). I'd be interested to know what bike you previously rode, and weather you did any comparison vids. Also, have you done any garage 'design' vids. The little bit shown, looks pretty squared away. I'm always looking for cool ideas on garage set up.

Hey Mr T. Thanks for the kind words! My previous bike was/is a Commencal meta HT (hardtail) I rode that exclusively for a few years. Prior to that I had a 2017 Giant Trance Advanced 2. Also great bike but nowhere near the 2021-22 stumpy evo. I didn’t make any comparison videos to these bikes tho, unfortunately. As for my garage, it IS DIALED. It was one of my covid-projects during lockdown and I’m proud of it. I’ve wanted to do a “garage tour” on the channel for some time so check back in periodically because I’ll get around to it eventually!

Local shredder ... right on! ... those trails look familiar :) I've had the expert evo for a bit over a year now. Fantastic bike! Only issue I've had is a creaking sound thats coming from the BB area (probably the BB) ... I've had it since day one but too lazy to investigate and/or take it back to the LBS and have them deal with it (since I bought it new). Other than that, flawless. BTW, how well did your offset spacer sit in the headset? I tried to go with the -1 degree setup but there was a slight wobble to the spacer (the 0 degree was a perfect fit in comparison) so I just left it alone and still using the 0 degree. Did you have any inconsistencies with the fitment between the two spacers? I've been meaning to reach out to specialized and have them send me another spacer. Lastly, I've had a few friends warranty their spec tires that had the knobs peeling right off. I think it depends on who you talk to over at S or LBS.
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
Yo! I’ve used both headset spacers that came with the bike and I haven’t had any fitment issues. I’d definitely check with a spesh dealer about it. Bummer to hear about the BB creak too. That would drive me nuts. As for the tires, I don’t even care anymore. Maxxis tires are much better anyway (in my opinion) Sure I don’t really feel like I got my monies-worth out of the spesh ones but I’m not looking back.

Great review, really digging the channel I think those tires were from a bad batch, I work at a shop that deals Specialized and had a customer with the exact same bike purchased around the same time. His tires starting coming apart in a similar manner, so I took some pictures and sent them to Specialized's warranty guys. They issued the shop credit for the tires so he could get any other set of tires (Specialized or not) for free. To be fair to the dealer you visited, I don't know of any other company that will warranty tires once they've been ridden so they probably figured it would be a waste of time to try.

Good question! It’s really hard to say what you’d like better but a gentle rule of thumb is: Do you feel like you’re the type of rider that weaves through trails finding the clean lines, strapping turns and boosting off whatever bumps and jumps you can find? Then size down. (S3) Or do you like to plow through the chunk a little more? Seeking more stability than nimble-ness? Size up (S4 in your case) With all that in mind, I have no idea what ride you’re coming off of so I don’t know what you’d be comparing to. I’m 5’10” and ride an S3. I like a ride that feels playful and nimble. Having said that, my S3 still plows when I need it to. Plus with the adjustable geo you can make the shorter bike longer and the longer bike shorter. Hope that helps.

I never had an issue necessarily with BB clearance. I just got more pedal strikes which one CAN get used to. The bike definitely descended more like a sled 🛷 with the BB low and it was more planted in the corners but I’ve been mostly running it Slack/High for the last year. Quick question. Do you have chainstay clearance issues when shifted down to your smallest cog? I just built up a Stumpjumper EVO frame and used a Shimano XT 12spd group set with a 30T chainring and the chain is almost sitting on the peak of the chainstay guard. Great review. Love my 21 evo comp. Only real complaint is maybe the high speed compression on the fork is harsh. Feels great jumping, climbing, turning but chattery high speed roots and rocks seems jarring. Another guy at the lift park with same build randomly asked me the same thing so maybe its not just me. I'm considering switching to coil or maybe grip 2 upgrade. I definitely need to check out the specialized calculator.
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 3 года назад
Most of what I ride is high speed chatter. There are times when I do think it’s a little harsh off the top of the stroke in the fork but in all fairness, I got this bike after riding nothing but an aggro hardtail for 2 years so this bike is already exponentially easier to hold on to comparatively. I’ve looked at doing a grip 2 upgrade myself as well. Still not sure what I’m gonna do

I would try pulling the fork apart first and checking the air shaft to make sure its clogged up with excess grease. @ShreddingSpree

S3 is a good size for your height. You could do S4 too depending on your riding preferences. I don’t think Mullet-ing the Evo is going to bring the rear end lower to the ground to make it easier to reach with your feet. My understanding is that the mullet link alters the angle of the rear triangle so the geometry isn’t changed by running the smaller wheel. HTA, BB height, STA, etc should all be the same. (Which is good) I’ve seen that Bronson. SICK bike. I haven’t ridden one though so I can’t comment further than saying it looks nice.

@@ShreddingSpree short legged riders prefer mullets to avoid the "butt buzz" of 29er on steep descents, not to mention snappy feeling of the bike. And I agree that S3 would be good for my size. @@radidoc4832 also true about the dropper post. I have the oneup 210mm dropper inserted as far as it’ll go and it sticks out 2 3/4”. But I also think the seat tube on that frame is rather low. Have the same on the front tire but does it really have any impact with cracked rubber ? no issues with sidewall rips or anything like that
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree Год назад
I think it does. When the rubber is cracked I feel like that’s an indication that it’s hardened which would obviously reduce traction. Also, the internal threading of the tire carcass isn’t meant to be directly exposed to air/dirt/water either so overall I’d say the integrity of the tire is compromised.

@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 3 года назад
Adam, I just peeped your channel to see what you mean by “street.” You’ve got some trials skills my dude. Pretty dope. Keep shredding! I don’t have a really informed answer for you here because I’ve never ridden trials and the last time I was riding street I was probably 15 years old on a 20” bmx. BUT… When I think “street jibs” I definitely don’t think 29er carbon Mtb. And when you’re doing a lot of bunny hops onto ledges, staircases, etc I don’t really think 150mm of rear travel is a great fit either. Honestly If it were me, I’d be getting a smaller bike for all that. Probably a dj or a trials bike based on what I just saw in the few clips on your feed. If you’re looking for something that’s a good trail bike AND something you can street-jam on I’d look at a shorter travel alloy trail bike like the nukeproof reactor because it’ll be a bit lighter, more responsive on the street stuff, and alloy stands a better chance of standing up to the occasional frame-case on the concrete.

It's somewhat of an oddity to see a RU-vidr keep a "rig"... of any sort... mostly stock for so long. Refreshing tbh... most channels I see on the tube include useless upgrades for content, to attract clicks and net likes. For the record, I mostly follow MTBr's and Tacoma channels... lol

"Lack of engagement in rear hubs", when you say illogical stuff like that, explain it. All have have full engagement none of them "spin freely" for any period of time, so you have to explain what you mean if you expect us to follow the point you are making.
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
Lol. “Illogical.” Sorry to confuse you. I felt like it was clear in context. By “lack of engagement” I didn’t mean “complete lack of engagement.” What I meant is “low engagement” as opposed to “high engagement.” While referring to low engagement, when you transition from coasting (or ratcheting the cranks) to pedaling there is a dead spot in the initial pedal stroke where the cranks actually DO “spin feely” before the freehub engages to propel you forward. This sometimes delays acceleration enough that it causes an issue when timing your pedal strokes over obstacles which could result in pedal strikes and power output mismanagement. On the “low speed/heavy landings” I noted in the video, that ping-sound is caused by the rear wheel actually rolling backwards slightly before the pawls in the freehub catch the grooves in the hub body. This quick and high-torque action makes a loud “ping!” And I imagine could cause increased wear on the system over time. These scenarios are virtually non-existent in high engagement systems because there is no dead spot in the initial pedal stroke. I hope that cleared some things up for you! Let me know if anything else needs more clarification! Have a great day and thanks for watching!
