Budget-minded riders that want to have urban fun, without breaking the bank will appreciate Suzuki’s DR-Z400SM. Built around Suzuki’s tried-and-true DR-Z dual-sport bike, the SM version trades its dual-purpose off-road setup for a road going configuration for those who want to slice through traffic and carve corners on the weekends. In this episode of MC Commute we swing a leg over Suzuki’s purposely retro street-legal supermoto. Tune-in and see what it’s like to ride.

A terrific review of the bike! The information is usable and purposeful. These are really enjoyable bikes to ride all over the town/city. Great Suzuki styling and the price is affordable for a great bike! Thanks for this review, I do like this style for the price and reliability, as you have mentioned. I enjoyed the ride, the review and the posting of the video!

It was good but I turned off cos I can’t stand hearing all his mouth noises, slapping up his lips and sucking his teeth, gross Also air induction into the exhaust isn’t new or ground breaking, CCM cxr230s have it and are basic af, and you’re not making the bike more eco, you’re diluting the exhaust with fresh air...

First hand experience : Got a new 2015sm road it hard every time I got on it. Burnt many sets of tires off and few sets of break pads, I Jumped it , Dumped it dropped it and knocked it over. Road it on the highway at 80 mph for hours . Took it off road where a SM shouldn't go, learned to drift it in a circle on grass then pavement . Learned how to go through the gears ridding a wheelie. Been over the handle bars bringing the back wheel up to high at the stop light. I put 44,000 miles on that bike in five years. I had one hell of a fun time every single mile. The ONLY thing ever done to maintain the bike besides tires and break pads was just oil change . The valves were never even adjusted. It run strong the day I sold it. (I almost cried) . Sold it for 4k got it new for 7,200.00 .... So I paid 3,200.00 for 5 years of riding that bike That means 640$ a year or just 53 dollars a month. To ride that bike. That's a pretty good deal in my book.

I have friends with DRZ400SM's. Once I got to ride them around for a day I was hooked! I ended up trading my MT-07 for the SM life. Something about a Thumper just made me excited. I've owned many Carbureted vehicles and have grown to really enjoy them and honestly enjoy how minimalist the DRZ is. It's extremely enjoyable and at the same time relaxing to ride quickly becoming my favorite motorcycle. It is heavy compared to other dual sports but if you're coming from heavier sport bikes it feels like a bicycle!

If it aint broke, don't fix it. Now I wouldn't complain if Suzuki upgraded this thing, but I have a 2016 model that is all tricked out. Spent about $2500 in upgrades, and it's arguably the most fun bike I have. It's not the fastest, but you can really ring it's neck and not be going insane illegal speeds, which I like. Very fun even at lower speeds. And it handles great with a sticky set of tires. If you can get one of these used for $3-4K, and then put another grand or two in mods, you'll have one of the more fun bikes out there.

I believe that the way the emission regulations work is that existing designs were somewhat grandfathered in. That is, they are only held to the emission requirements that were in place at the time the bike was introduced. The flipside of these regulations is that any upgrades will negate the grandfather status. Hence, this bike still has only 5 speeds and a carburetor.

Have you thought about getting and FCR and 15/39 gearing? It makes the DR.Z way more highway friendly but with no loss of power and torque cause of the new power bump. They have bunch of Chinese clone 39mm FCR carbs on Ebay for like $100. Some food for thought. Cheers!

Just got a 2022. Ive had many other bikes. My last two were GSXR600 and a GSXR1000. I had a ton of fun on the sport bikes, but have to say that the DRZ is the most fun I’ve had out of the 5 bikes I’ve owned in my life time. I love the torquey engine, and it’s just a blast to ride on twisty back roads. Wish I had explored the super moto world a long time ago. I find myself trying to stay out of trouble from the desire to avoid traffic by hoping curbs, burning across a field and back out onto the road in the suburbs. This bike brings out inner kid. I don’t have any issues with it not being fuel injected or having a 6th gear. Ride it as it was intended to be ridden and you can have more fun than you can imagine. It’s a great bike!

Thanks for the review. That's some crazy street laws where you are from. Just making your own lane, I could see people getting upset with that. I have really been waiting for some manufacturer to step up with more displacement/power for this type of SM. Kaw comes out with a 300cc? And regarding brakes. Why put rotor on the left side? Put on right side with shorter stainless brake line and easy much better braking.

It's a great bike, and I don't mind the carburetor and the five speed. It is, however, too tall for an old guy with a 29-in leg seam. Why they went to the trouble of changing the fork but retaining 10 inches of travel I don't know. My gs650 has 7 inches of travel and is a fine bumpy road bike. I'm going to get the suspension lowered 3 inches and I will love this bike a lot more! It's fine while I'm moving but I'm getting tired of having to reach for the ground when there's a dip under my foot.

I find it funny when everyone complains that it isn't fast enough. I have the 400s and it gets to 70km/h in second gear and 100km/h at the top of third. Takes no more than 5 seconds to get to 100km/h which by car standards is faster than many V8 cars.
